When Rear Admiral Bancroft discovers the plans missing for his new battleship, suspicion falls on Lt. Clifford Bruce, his daughter Madeline's suitor, who was seen climbing out of the Admiral's window. In reality, Bruce, attempting to keep his courtship with Madeline a secret, was retrieving a love letter that he had written the Admiral's daughter. Madeline, suspecting Ito, the house servant, of stealing the plans, takes advantage of the fact that the servant is in love with her and visits his room that night. He shows her the plans which he boasts will bring him a fortune so that the two can elope. Madeline then attempts to gain possession of the papers, and in the ensuing struggle, Ito is stabbed to death. The supposition that he has committed "hari kari" avoids any further investigation, the plans are returned, and the lieutenant wins the consent of the admiral to marry Madeline.

A humble fisherman's girlfriend is kidnapped by an egotistical prince tricked into believing he has powers. The two lookalikes swap lives until reverting roles to marry.

Happy-go-lucky cowboy Bob Fleming exhibits such prowess with his pistol, that he wins the three gold coins offered by millionaire Luther Reed to test his marksmanship. Bob also makes an impression on Reed's pretty daughter Betty. The cowboy is so admired by the local citizenry that when crooks J. M. Ballinger and Rufus Berry arrive in town, they decide to make Bob their patsy. After planting oil on Bob's land, they sell stock to the townfolk and the cowboy, who has been innocently drawn into the scheme, turns it over to the crooks for safekeeping. For his efforts, Bob is arrested and found guilty of defrauding the stock holders, and also charged with being notorious outlaw Pat Duncan. After several adventures, Bob succeeds in capturing the real Duncan, vindicates himself of the charges and wins Betty for his bride.

Nance Pelot is bravely trying to support herself and her father Joe, the town drunk, by playing piano in an unsavory roadside inn owned by Larry Shayne. Chet Todd, the son of a shop owner, is in love with her, but her reputation has been sullied by her profession, so Chet's mother disapproves of her. Nance inherits a small farm from her mother, and when Shayne discovers that the property is valuable, he plots to cheat her out of her inheritance. After a series of misadventures, including a revival meeting and a blinding snowstorm, Joe stops drinking and Chet rescues the farm from Shayne. When Nance sells the property, she gains a respectable income, as well as the respect of the community and her future mother-in-law.

In Germany, young Marie Louise's foster parents commit suicide rather than face charges of treason. Marie emigrates to the US, but when she gets there she is met with contempt and suspicion because of her German nationality. She meets Davidge, who owns a shipbuilding company, and persuades him to get her a job in his shipyards, so she can prove her dedication to the war effort. One day at work she is approached by a man named Verrinder, who is in actuality a German spy. He and some fellow spies are planning to sabotage the shipyards and want Marie to help them.

When Pinto reaches her eighteenth birthday, the five wealthy Arizonans who adopted her upon the death of her parents decide that ranch life will never make a lady of her. Their old friend Pop Audry, formerly of Arizona and now a member of New York society, agrees to provide Pinto with the necessary education. Accordingly, Pinto and her cowboy nursemaid Looey are dispatched to New York where they lose Audry's address. They are aided in locating the estate by Bob De Witt, a young neighbor. Audry's haughty wife objects to the cowgirl's presence and moves out of the house. Soon Pinto discovers that her detractor is carrying on an affair with another man and informs Pop Audry of his wife's deception during a Wild West show that Pinto has staged for Pop's friends. Pop decides to deed the house to his fortune-hunting wife and returns to Arizona with Pinto, who, still a cowgirl, is accompanied by Bob De Witt.

An orphan boy from the Kentucky hills joins the Union Army and rescues his adopted family from Morgan's raiders. He learns his real identity when he returns after the war.

Bubbles is a tomboy who resists her Aunt Amelia's attempts to transform her into a lady. One day, while dressed in masculine attire, she meets Jack Corrigan and they become friends. Jack takes her to his social club where she pretends to be "one of the boys," but his friends realize her true sex. Soon after, Bubbles becomes exasperated by her aunt's efforts, and in final defiance leaves home to work as a nursemaid. When her employer Mrs. Dorrence is caught in a compromising situation, she turns to Jack for help. He then convinces her to give up the tomboyish ways and marry him.

Young Bill Reid is given a position at the bank of William Stuyvesant, whose daughter Ruth he loves. The banker's son Ralph Stuyvesant is in love with vamp Grace Andrews and supporting her in luxury. To meet Grace's extravagant demands, Ralph forges his father's name to a check, but suspicion for the crime is thrown on Reid by Tom Burnett, who wants to marry Ruth for her money. At a ball thrown by Stuyvesant, the banker is murdered by Burnett when the former accuses him of theft. Burnett and Ralph again contrive to throw the blame on Reid, who is convicted of the murder on circumstantial evidence and sentenced to death. Through Ruth's tireless efforts and the assistance of the chief of detectives, Reid escapes and the real criminals are brought to justice.

Upon discovering that his sister has been driven to suicide by the betrayal of Enrico Colonna, young mountaineer Dabney Morgan swears to avenge her death. Setting out to find Colonna, Dabney becomes enmeshed in quicksand and is rescued from certain death by a stranger who turns out to be the man he is pursuing. In gratitude Dabney gives the culprit a chance to make his getaway, but in his plight, Colonna is fatally wounded by a shot from Dabney's rifle. At this moment, the victim's sister Elenore arrives and at gunpoint impels Dabney to remove her brother to a nearby cabin. Obliging her, Dabney soon finds himself falling in love with his captor, thus presenting a conflict between his duty to his dead sister and his love for Elenore. This dilemma is resolved when Colonna finally dies from his wounds, freeing the couple to begin a new life in the valley of tomorrow.

Rancher Joe Cumberland finds "Whistling Dan" in the desert and gives the boy a home, rearing him with his daughter Kate. Dan, grown to manhood, remains untamed, possessing a hot temper which ignites his eyes into a yellow glow when he is angered. Dan's eyes glow and he vows revenge when outlaw Jim Silent tries to kill him in a saloon brawl. Kate goes to the outlaw camp to prevent Dan from killing Silent, but is taken prisoner. The confrontation between the two men escalates when Dan captures Lee Haines, one of Silent's men, and Silent retaliates by imprisoning Kate's father. After a trade of prisoners, Dan trails the outlaws and exterminates the entire gang except for Silent. The two adversaries then slug it out, with Dan strangling his tormentor. His revenge accomplished, Dan is somewhat tamed and settles down with Kate.

Firebrand Trevison owns the Diamond K Ranch, which the railroad is anxious to acquire. To execute the purchase, Rosalind Benham, the railroad president's daughter, her aunt and Benham's representative Jefferson Corrigan, who is in love with Rosalind, travel to Arizona. Corrigan and Firebrand take an instant dislike to each other, and a fistfight develops between the two men. When Firebrand becomes friendly with Rosalind, Corrigan determines to ruin his rival. He conspires with a crooked judge to challenge Firebrand's title to the ranch and attempts to subvert the rancher's budding relationship with Rosalind by inducing Hester Keys to pretend that she is involved with him. After a series of misadventures, Firebrand surmounts these challenges to retain both his land and Rosalind.

Although she is the mastermind of a gang of crooks, Kate Westhanger's talents are unknown to those outside her circle, thus enabling her to infiltrate George Flanbaugh's gold syndicate. While ostensibly working for Flanbaugh, Kate actually is compiling information on a large gold shipment. One day, while working, Kate meets young criminologist Michael Pretherson, and although finding herself attracted to the sleuth, she laughs at his detective work and challenges him to stop her. He fails, and after successfully robbing the gold shipment Kate is enraged when she learns that the gang has decided to disband. Her actions inflame the crooks, who capture both Kate and Michael and are about to kill their prisoners when the police arrive, igniting a fight in which all the criminals except Kate are killed. Realizing that her love for Michael has extinguished her desire for crime, Kate returns the gold, is exonerated and weds Michael.

The Allen spinsters adopt Bradley Nickerson, who grows up with Gussie Baker, the little girl next door. Fifteen years later he is first mate of the Thomas Doane, owned by Granny Baker. A plot to sink the ship is averted by Bradley and a sailor, but ultimately the ship is sabotaged. The insurance company hires Bradley to investigate the wreck, but Sam Hammond, a deep sea diver, also in love with Gussie, is tampering with Bradley's diving gear at the moment a fire breaks out. Rowing to the burning ship, Bradley rescues Hammond, who then leaves him stranded, but Gussie rows out to save him, realizing at last the depth of her love.

Billy Barton a bank teller, shoulders the blame for a cash shortage for which Fred Kingston, a fellow employee, is responsible and is sentenced to prison. On his way there, the train is wrecked and he escapes. In the town of Culterton, he meets and falls in love with Mary Spivins, the bank president's daughter, and charms the populace by playing the mouth organ. He obtains work as a farmhand with Silas Harkins, taking the farm mule as wages. When Spivins orders Harkins arrested for assault, Billy learns it was a kick from the mule that laid out Spivins. At the bank he finds Spivins bound while Fred and the clerk are robbing the safe; Billy is locked in the safe, and all efforts to save him prove futile until the wall is kicked out by the mule. Through the efforts of Willie Spivins, the bank is dynamited, but all ends happily.

She takes part in a pageant for which Jerry designs the costumes and attracts the attention of Christiansen, a young playwright with whom she works secretly on a play. After their baby is born, Jerry and Jane become closer, but he is violently jealous of her accompanying Christiansen to the successful opening of his play and offers her a divorce. However, their child's illness brings them back together.

To escape a loathsome marriage to the king of a neighboring principality, Princess Isabel flees her kingdom for England, where she is rescued by Lord Anthony Conway. His friends are distressed by his gay escapades, and they rebel when he encourages them to entertain the princess, assuming her to be an actress whom she strongly resembles. Returning to her country with the Englishman, she realizes that she must marry the neighboring king to save her country, in spite of her love for Lord Anthony; but she finds that the king has been seduced by the charms of actress, Molly Moncke, whom he marries, leaving the princess happy with Anthony.

Ann Annington, book reviewer for a metropolitan newspaper, is assigned to interview author Harold Hargrave. Knowing that Hargrave has resisted previous attempts, Ann obtains a position in his apartment as a maid and resolves to break up his engagement to Evangeline, a girl chosen for him by his mother. She plants ladies' garments about his room and hairpins in the bed, and Evangeline is indignant. Discovering he has been tricked, Hargrave dismisses Ann. That evening they realize their mutual love, with the result that she does not report the details of his private life to the press.

A white child is adopted and raised by a Chinese citizen and brought to San Francisco, where no one surmises that she is actually not Chinese.

The adventures of Bob Hampton out West bring him into association with General George Custer, who has plans for a raiding party on the Sioux camp near the Little Bighorn River.
