Elsie then accepts Maurice Brunel's offer to make her the main attraction of his new follies. Elsie soon becomes famous and is showered with gifts and attention, but she does not submit to Brunel's advances, the price he demands for making her a star. Tom returns to France and meets La Pierre, who confesses that his "one year to live" warning to Elsie was an unsuccessful attempt at seduction. La Pierre also tells Tom of Brunel's desire for Elsie, and Tom finds her just in time to prevent Brunel's unwelcome advances. Elsie and Tom are happily reunited.

Gulian returns to his family in the United States and becomes engaged to Lael, a girl he had known before the war. During this time, Vida has also come to the United States and has become the companion of Gulian's mother. Gulian does not recognize Vida, whom he has never seen; in any event, she had told him that she was terribly disfigured in order to make him believe that she did not pity him. Gulian's wedding to Lael is halted when his brother-in-law kills himself after squandering the Eyre fortune. Lael soon breaks her engagement to the impoverished Gulian, who declares his love to Vida. Vida involuntarily reveals her identity, and Gulian's happiness is complete.

The troupe has a poor season, and Keene is stranded in a mining town in Placer Valley. He meets Sal Flood there, and they are soon engaged, bringing west Keene's young son, Benny, for the wedding. Sal leaves the operation of her saloon to Keene, devoting herself to winning Benny's love and affection. Keene soon resumes his heavy drinking and is constantly cheated at cards by a professional gambler named Osner. Despite the interference of Steve McGregor, a mining superintendent, Keene continues to lose heavily to Osner; and, eventually, in order to pay off his IOU's, Keene is forced by the gambler to help him rob the saloon safe of McGregor's mining payroll. Benny sees his father steal the money and is injured by the blast from the dynamite used by Osner to blow the safe; but Benny still has faith in his father and, the following day, lies to the sheriff rather than implicate Keene. Keene is overcome with remorse for Benny's injuries and sets out to bring back the stolen gold. He tracks down Osner, and the two fight in the car of an aerial tramway. Osner falls to his death, Keene returns the gold, and he is pardoned and happily reunited with his family.

The shock kills David, and Carol sets out in search of Laurence, has many adventures, and finally finds him with the friendly native king who saved him.

While sailing to his home in New York, Quaigg treats Tiare roughly and throws Captain Croft overboard when he comes to her defense. Quaigg attempts to tame Tiare by exploiting her superstitions and threatening her with the same whip he uses on his pet leopard. Later, Tiare awaits her husband's return from a hunting trip with a gun and fires as a man enters, only to discover that it is Captain Croft, who was saved from drowning. Quaigg finds them together and releases the leopard. However, the beast kills its master before being shot by Croft. Afterward, Tiare and Croft return to the South Seas together.

Some years later, Nathan prospers on a small California ranch, which adjoins the larger ranch of John Comstock. Comstock makes no secret of his dislike for Jews, yet he unknowingly approves when his daughter, Helen, falls in love with the Danvers' adopted son, Jimmy, whom Nathan secretly recognizes as David. Nathan loses everything in a fire, goes to San Francisco to begin anew, and is reunited with a contrite Esther. Jimmy learns the truth about his parentage and goes to San Francisco to search for Nathan; Helen and Comstock follow, and Helen disappears. Nathan saves Helen from disgrace at the hands of Max Levy, and gratitude prompts Comstock to sanction Helen's marriage to Jimmy.

Months later, Esther, bearing a child, returns. Cameron and Bisson also show up unexpectedly, and Joan claims the child as her own to save Esther from Cameron's wrath. In pursuit of Esther (who he believes murdered Perrault), O'Neil chases Joan, unaware that she is his "Colleen," when she flees with the child in a canoe during a raging forest fire, assisted by Jerry-Jo, the half-breed. Bisson, enraged, also gives chase, kills Jerry-Jo, and then dies when the half-breed's dog attacks him. Joan and O'Neil return to the post to find Perrault, still alive, planning to marry Esther.

When he is unable to pay for a diamond necklace, Garry is threatened with arrest and is betrayed by Veronica; he is convicted of grand larceny and sentenced to ten years' imprisonment. To assuage the broken heart of Garry's mother, Lorna sends her letters ostensibly written by him. In prison, Garry saves the warden from an attack by one of the prisoners, but when a wholesale break is perpetrated, Garry follows the prisoners aboard a speeding locomotive and rescues the warden just as a freight train is sighted coming in the opposite direction. As a result, the grateful warden secures a pardon for Garry, who returns home to his mother and sweetheart.

Claire Bodai, the financier's girl, jealous of the young wife, goes to Dick, informing him that his wife has been unfaithful. But the contrite financier reassures Dick that his wife not only is faithful but has made him, Holcomb, see the foolishness of his ways. Dick then receives financial backing.

An interested friend, however, visits the governor, who intervenes in Clifford's behalf, and following their mutual recognition as childhood friends, Clifford is pardoned by Governor Talbot and wins Helen's love.

On the point of suicide, she meets young composer Tom Clemons in Central Park, and their friendship ripens into love. In a restaurant, Lily is discovered by Antonio Marvelli, a vocal instructor, who recognizes her talent and offers to teach her for nothing. After a year of hard work, Lily is fitted for an operatic career and makes her debut in Thaïs. At the same time, she is freed from her husband by his death in a railroad accident and finds happiness and success with Tom.
