A young couple's future is put in jeopardy by both the past and present actions of their parents.

Elsie Duchanier, the maid of the star dancer in Brunel's Follies, falls in love with Capt. Tom Kendrick, an American soldier stationed in France. Kendrick is reassigned to the United States, and Dr. La Pierre, who is also in love with Elsie, tells her that she has only one year to live. Elsie then accepts Maurice Brunel's offer to make her the main attraction of his new follies. Elsie soon becomes famous and is showered with gifts and attention, but she does not submit to Brunel's advances, the price he demands for making her a star. Tom returns to France and meets La Pierre, who confesses that his "one year to live" warning to Elsie was an unsuccessful attempt at seduction. La Pierre also tells Tom of Brunel's desire for Elsie, and Tom finds her just in time to prevent Brunel's unwelcome advances. Elsie and Tom are happily reunited.

Young Marian hooks up with Arthur, a boy who loves nothing more than drinking and fast music. He takes Marian to a string of wild parties, and she falls for him. She marries him on his promise to settle down from his wild life. It isn't long before he becomes restless, though, and takes up with a flashy dancer. Feeling neglected, Marian meets up with a former boyfriend, Bob. Complications ensue.

Gulian Eyre, an American soldier blinded in action during the World War, remains in France after the cessation of hostilities and marries his nurse, Vida. Gulian is later operated on by a skilled French surgeon and recovers his sight, only to find that Vida has left him and obtained a divorce. Gulian returns to his family in the United States and becomes engaged to Lael, a girl he had known before the war. During this time, Vida has also come to the United States and has become the companion of Gulian's mother. Gulian does not recognize Vida, whom he has never seen; in any event, she had told him that she was terribly disfigured in order to make him believe that she did not pity him. Gulian's wedding to Lael is halted when his brother-in-law kills himself after squandering the Eyre fortune. Lael soon breaks her engagement to the impoverished Gulian, who declares his love to Vida. Vida involuntarily reveals her identity, and Gulian's happiness is complete.

A young girl in Monte Carlo is engaged to a nobleman, but is really in love with someone else. A jewel thief named "The Black Spider" has been robbing the wealthy of Monte Carlo, and as a joke the girl steals her aunt's jewels. Unfortunately, a detective finds out and suspects her of being the real "The Black Spider".

After his wife dies, Roland Keene finds work as an actor with a road company, provided that he give up cards and liquor. The troupe has a poor season, and Keene is stranded in a mining town in Placer Valley. He meets Sal Flood there, and they are soon engaged, bringing west Keene's young son, Benny, for the wedding. Sal leaves the operation of her saloon to Keene, devoting herself to winning Benny's love and affection. Keene soon resumes his heavy drinking and is constantly cheated at cards by a professional gambler named Osner. Despite the interference of Steve McGregor, a mining superintendent, Keene continues to lose heavily to Osner; and, eventually, in order to pay off his IOU's, Keene is forced by the gambler to help him rob the saloon safe of McGregor's mining payroll. Benny sees his father steal the money and is injured by the blast from the dynamite used by Osner to blow the safe; but Benny still has faith in his father and, the following day, lies to the sheriff rather than implicate Keene. Keene is overcome with remorse for Benny's injuries and sets out to bring back the stolen gold. He tracks down Osner, and the two fight in the car of an aerial tramway. Osner falls to his death, Keene returns the gold, and he is pardoned and happily reunited with his family.

Believing her husband, Laurence Teck, (Maurice B. Flynn) to be dead in the African jungle, Carol (Mary Miles Minter) marries musician David Verne (Casson Ferguson). Laurence does come home, but, thinking it best for Carol, he returns to the jungle. The shock kills David, and Carol sets out in search of Laurence, has many adventures, and finally finds him with the friendly native king who saved him.

A demonstration by Emile Coue, by means of titles and illustrations of his points, of the theory of auto-suggestion. Coue is shown lecturing before a group of people, and you get the impression that you yourself are listening. The well-known phrase "Day by Day" is stressed a great many times in the closing sequence and finally the audience is made to say it with M. Coue.

On a South Sea island, wealthy hunter Scott Quaigg meets Tiare, the daughter of a drunken Scotsman and a native woman, who happily give permission to marry her. While sailing to his home in New York, Quaigg treats Tiare roughly and throws Captain Croft overboard when he comes to her defense. Quaigg attempts to tame Tiare by exploiting her superstitions and threatening her with the same whip he uses on his pet leopard. Later, Tiare awaits her husband's return from a hunting trip with a gun and fires as a man enters, only to discover that it is Captain Croft, who was saved from drowning. Quaigg finds them together and releases the leopard. However, the beast kills its master before being shot by Croft. Afterward, Tiare and Croft return to the South Seas together.

The boss has Torchy break in new shoes for him.

Suffering persecution, Russian Jews Nathan Levinsky, his wife, Esther, and his son, David, escape their homeland for the U.S., where Nathan ekes out a feeble existence as a peddler. Esther despairs of her life and leaves Nathan for Max Levy, but reverses cause her to allow David to be adopted by the wealthy Danvers family. Some years later, Nathan prospers on a small California ranch, which adjoins the larger ranch of John Comstock. Comstock makes no secret of his dislike for Jews, yet he unknowingly approves when his daughter, Helen, falls in love with the Danvers' adopted son, Jimmy, whom Nathan secretly recognizes as David. Nathan loses everything in a fire, goes to San Francisco to begin anew, and is reunited with a contrite Esther. Jimmy learns the truth about his parentage and goes to San Francisco to search for Nathan; Helen and Comstock follow, and Helen disappears. Nathan saves Helen from disgrace at the hands of Max Levy, and gratitude prompts Comstock to sanction Helen's marriage to Jimmy.

Joan Cameron is engaged against her will to Paul Bisson, the trading post factor. While her father and Bisson are away, Joan's sister, Esther, elopes with trapper Jules Perrault, and Joan meets Barry O'Neil, a dashing Northwest Mounted Police officer who falls in love with her and departs, promising to return. Months later, Esther, bearing a child, returns. Cameron and Bisson also show up unexpectedly, and Joan claims the child as her own to save Esther from Cameron's wrath. In pursuit of Esther (who he believes murdered Perrault), O'Neil chases Joan, unaware that she is his "Colleen," when she flees with the child in a canoe during a raging forest fire, assisted by Jerry-Jo, the half-breed. Bisson, enraged, also gives chase, kills Jerry-Jo, and then dies when the half-breed's dog attacks him. Joan and O'Neil return to the post to find Perrault, still alive, planning to marry Esther.

The oldest son of a San Francisco Policeman is accused of theft. The officer's wife, brother, and step-sister attempt to help repay the money. The family goes through various misfortunes and takes a nasty turn when officer O'Hare shoots his second oldest son Johnny during a bank robbery. Johnny must go on trial. A spectacular trial ensues followed by a happy ending.

To gain enough money for his sweetheart's diamond ring, Lige undertakes to spend a night among the wax figures, a prize of $100 having been offered the man daring enough to do it. Thieves enter and begin removing the figures and the whole museum assumes a ghostly atmosphere.

Garry Beecher, forgetting his mother and sweetheart, Lorna, falls in love with Veronica, a chorus girl, and heads for the city; finding her with a millionaire, he returns home and robs his former employer, then returns to Veronica and begins a career of reckless spending. When he is unable to pay for a diamond necklace, Garry is threatened with arrest and is betrayed by Veronica; he is convicted of grand larceny and sentenced to ten years' imprisonment. To assuage the broken heart of Garry's mother, Lorna sends her letters ostensibly written by him. In prison, Garry saves the warden from an attack by one of the prisoners, but when a wholesale break is perpetrated, Garry follows the prisoners aboard a speeding locomotive and rescues the warden just as a freight train is sighted coming in the opposite direction. As a result, the grateful warden secures a pardon for Garry, who returns home to his mother and sweetheart.

After a harsh childhood, orphan Jane Eyre is hired by Edward Rochester, the brooding lord of a mysterious manor house, to care for his young daughter.

Margot Hastings, the lovely wife of a handsome but needy inventor, Dick, is the latest prey of Lothario financier, Slater T. Holcomb who may be persuaded to produce some of her husband's inventions. Holcomb promises Margot jewels and riches if she will be agreeable. She manages to keep her distance until he invites her aboard his yacht, where she makes him realize how contemptible she regards his behavior. Claire Bodai, the financier's girl, jealous of the young wife, goes to Dick, informing him that his wife has been unfaithful. But the contrite financier reassures Dick that his wife not only is faithful but has made him, Holcomb, see the foolishness of his ways. Dick then receives financial backing.

Billy Clifford, who has served a sentence in reform school for devoted friend Talbot, later in life becomes a successful gambler. He meets and falls in love with Helen Morely, daughter of the mayor. His partner, advised that the mayor intends to raid his establishment, kidnaps Helen and holds her prisoner as security against the raid. Clifford rescues her as the police arrive but is forced to shoot his partner. Helen's reputation is saved, but Clifford is arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment on a murder charge. An interested friend, however, visits the governor, who intervenes in Clifford's behalf, and following their mutual recognition as childhood friends, Clifford is pardoned by Governor Talbot and wins Helen's love.

Michael Cardigan is an American patriot in the months before the American Revolution. He fights to broker a peace deal between settlers and the Cayuga tribe and almost loses his life in the process. Despite the fact that he loves Silver Heels, the ward of the British governor, Michael joins with the famed Minute Men to plot revolution and, he hopes, a free American nation.

Soon to become a mother, Beatrix Franklin (Lois Wilson) persuades her husband Pelham (Holmes Herbert) to go on a cruise. He becomes acquainted with May Beamish (Flora Le Breton), who tries, unsuccessfully, to capture him. Upon hearing of the attentions paid to her husband, Beatrix provokes a quarrel and separation by staying out with Alec Greenwood (Allan Simpson), a former admirer. The vamp seeks to force Pelham to divorce, but she is triumphantly outsmarted by Beatrix.

Lily Becker, daughter of middle-class parents in Iowa, has always aspired to be a musician but receives little sympathy from her environment. She is forced into an unhappy marriage with Albert Penny, son of wealthy parents, whose brutality proves unbearable; fleeing to New York, she is saved from starvation by a friendly chorus girl and gives birth to a child, which dies. On the point of suicide, she meets young composer Tom Clemons in Central Park, and their friendship ripens into love. In a restaurant, Lily is discovered by Antonio Marvelli, a vocal instructor, who recognizes her talent and offers to teach her for nothing. After a year of hard work, Lily is fitted for an operatic career and makes her debut in Thaïs. At the same time, she is freed from her husband by his death in a railroad accident and finds happiness and success with Tom.

In endeavoring to help a bashful friend, a man becomes engaged to his friend's sweetheart just after he has consummated an engagement with his own "best girl."

Larry Barclay fights to save his dead father's tire factory from his father's enemies.

The owner of one of the oldest automobiles in existence, after many mix-ups, collides with a telegraph pole. He is knocked out and dreams that a couple of thieves plan to steal an Egyptian mummy belonging to his sweetheart's father. He takes the place of the real mummy and the resultant complications will bring a good many laughs.
