Ex-footballer Flynn (Robson Green) is thrown together with his estranged wife Alison when their mentally handicapped son goes AWOL from his training centre home. As roguish Flynn and long-suffering Alison chase the missing boy around the wild Welsh countryside, years of repressed hostility are exorcised in the heat of the their self-imposed rescue mission. The couple trace their marital breakdown back to the trauma of their son's affliction. Vigorous sparring gradually blossoms into a rediscovery of mutual attraction, and years of antagonism dissolve to reveal the fragile possibility of true love. Meanwhile the missing boy discovers a strange and exciting new world outside his training centre home. He's determined to prove to his antagonistic father that he deserves a life in the real world rather than being locked in an institution on his 18th birthday. His plan? To surprise dad by making his own way to London. His problem? Things just don't go as planned. But his ambition is rewarded when his exhausted parents finally catch up with him. Jolted into belated maturity by the crisis of the last two days, Flynn has learned to recognise the value and potential in himself, his ex-wife, and, at last, his son. Tentatively, but with fresh hope, the family unites for the first time in years to face the future ahead.

It was originally shown as a two-part miniseries. The plot summaries were as follows. Episode 1 Life for Dee Stanton (Jemma Redgrave) is improving at every turn. Her legal career is blossoming and her boyfriend Dominic (Robson Green) unexpectedly proposes to her. Things were very different eleven years ago when her husband Paul (Phil Davis) was jailed for the brutal murders of four girls, and Dee was hounded from her home. Dee has kept all this a secret from her 15-year-old son Jamie (Somerset Prew). Now he has discovered the truth about his father - and demands to see him. When a young girl is murdered at her son's school, Dee and Dominic begin to suspect that their son might be following in the father's murderous footsteps. Episode 2 Dominic (Robson Green) is cleared of all charges, but Jamie comes under scrutiny when evidence in Morag's murder inquiry begins pointing to him - so Dee (Jemma Redgrave) rashly provides her son (Somerset Prew) with an alibi. Things go from bad to worse for the unfortunate teenager, however, when he is found with his hands at a comatose Abi's throat.

Tyneside ship-builder Joe Maddison lost his faith in the trenches at the Somme in 1916. Now that World War II has begun, he is too old to enlist alongside his son and son-in-law, and is also in a reserved occupation so, after his wife Polly has left him for a sailor, he joins the Home Guard with his friends Marxist Eddie and cynical, wise-cracking Harry. Harry's anti-authoritarian attitude causes problems with Mr. Simpson, the company commander, and Joe leads the men out on strike after Harry is expelled. However, after he has dealt with an unexploded bomb, he is acclaimed a hero, and, along with his friends, reinstated, being promoted to Corporal. He also meets widow Selina who brings him out of his shell, but Polly returns, with the sailor's child, seeking a reconciliation, a request which splits the family. Come 1945 and the war is ending, but Joe still has his personal conflict to resolve.
