RYM: "In the broadest sense, drama films encompass mostly non-comedic narratives revolving around issues and conflicts. The original term comes from the classical Greek word meaning "action", which itself is taken from "I do" - as such, drama is essentially the art of doing. Dramas may revolve around different themes, including unfortunate events or troubles the protagonist(s) are occupied by, or important events and changes in a character's life; however, often many just revolve around smaller issues of everyday life.

Within cinema, drama is more often the mode used to drive a narrative forward, and it therefore often crosses-over with and features in other cinematic genres. Examples of specific drama tropes include Period Drama, which focuses on dramatised stories of historical people/places/events/things; Legal Drama, dramatic narratives taking place within the legal system; Docudrama, dramas that utilize Documentary-style film-making to re-create actual events; Psychological Drama, dramas that focus on the psychological issues of their characters); Political Drama, dramas arising from a background of a political conflict/struggle, and Family Drama, primarily focusing on the personal relationships and dynamics between family members.

Melodrama is a separate, more specific form of drama, which highlights the emotional elements within dramatic cinema and uses them to stimulate and move the audience. Tragedy films are another specific form of drama, originally derived from classical tragedies (but now encompassing modern tragedies as well), in which characters experience terrible, unfortunate events that lead to inevitable drama. Specific film Movements centered around dramatic narratives have emerged since the dawn of cinema, such as the British New Wave-affiliated Kitchen Sink Realism, the Polish Cinema of Moral Anxiety and Polish Film School movements, and the Hungarian Budapest School. Whilst drama films are usually not comedic, there exists a decent sized cluster of films often dubbed "comedy-drama" or "dramedy" which utilizes both Comedy and dramatic writing within their narratives."
