The Nickelodeon network announced on Tuesday that SpongeBob SquarePants (1999) creator Stephen Hillenburg has passed away from ALS. Hillenburg studied and taught marine biology before moving on to animation, beginning with Rocko's Modern Life (1993). He then used both of his passions to create loveable SpongeBob and his friends. "The fact that it's undersea and isolated from our world helps the characters maintain their own culture," Hillenburg told The Associated Press in 2001. "The essence of the show is that SpongeBob is an innocent in a world of jaded characters. The rest is absurd packaging."
