Iconic ’80s Vampire Movie ‘The Lost Boys’ Is Now Streaming for Free
Image
The 80s were a great time for Hollywood movies, from slasher flicks to adventure and comedy to sci-fi every genre elevated the features with innovation in practical effects and unique protagonists. The 30 Longest-Running TV Sitcoms, Ranked By Duration
Image
The longest-running sitcoms in television history come from several different decades and have different styles of humor but have all left a lasting legacy. Sitcoms have always been a staple of television, as even classic golden age TV was known for shows like Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver gave way to even more groundbreaking sitcoms like All in the Family and The Jeffersons. However, when it came to sitcoms, lasting for 15 or 20 seasons was never easy as humor is subjective and changes over time. Yet some have shown incredible lasting power over the years.

Though audiences tune into sitcoms for laughs, the longest-running sitcoms show the different ways the genre can connect with audiences. There are the classic easy-going sitcoms like The Love Boat, some that mix in drama, like M*A*S*H, animated classics like The Simpsons, and darker sitcoms like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

5 Memorable Tales of Kid-Friendly Halloween Horror from TV Anthologies
Image
Although Halloween is embraced by all ages these days, it was mostly a children’s holiday not all that long ago. What is essentially now a multi-month event was a single day of fun back then. The real world has changed in this regard, but some things stay the same in TV anthologies; kids are still the focal point in stories about Halloween.

In episodic anthologies rooted in horror, Halloween stories occasionally happen but are not guaranteed or even timely. Horror series, after all, do not rely on Halloween in order to be horror. The chances are, though, if an episode is all about Halloween, the protagonists are probably young.

Here are five must-watch tales of kid-friendly Halloween horror from TV anthologies.

Tales from the Darkside (1983-1988)

Trick or Treat

Interest in a Creepshow TV series back in the ‘80s led to the creation of Tales from the Darkside. Before...

Jon Hamm: Double Emmy nominee for record 5th time?
Image
Following his 2015 Emmy win for the final season of “Mad Men,” Jon Hamm took a large step back from TV stardom in order to beef up his film resume with titles such as “Baby Driver,” “Richard Jewell,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Now that he has made a splashy return to the small screen by playing new roles on “Fargo” and “The Morning Show” and reprising one on “Good Omens,” his Emmy nominations total could instantly rise from 16 to 19. If all of his possible 2024 bids come to fruition, he will be only the fourth person and second man to ever compete for three acting Emmys at once.

Hamm’s string of recent TV acting gigs began last July when he returned for season two Prime Video’s “Good Omens” as supporting character Gabriel – a humanoid version of the biblical archangel. He then fulfilled the new role of ambitious tech billionaire Paul Marks...

Why Tron Is the Citizen Kane of Video Game Movies
Image
Among its many achievements, the pioneering 1982 science-fiction film Tron enabled audiences to experience the awesome sensation of being sucked into a video game world of endless possibilities and wonder. By inventing technology that far surpassed anything available through 1980s arcades and consoles, Tron inspired audiences to dream of a future in which real-world game-playing was as fun and interesting as the thrilling game sequences in the film.

Tron, the first feature film to extensively use computer-generated imagery (CGI) alongside live-action elements, was so far ahead of its time that it was disqualified from winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects because the Academy felt that the film’s use of computer animation amounted to cheating. By creating its own unique digital world, Tron turned the limitations of 1980s animation and CGI to its advantage. Over 40 years after its release, the film remains a mind-blowing viewing experience, unlike any other movie ever made.

Blossom Reboot Won't Be a Sitcom, Teases Mayim Bialik
Image
Blossom star Mayim Bialik recently provided an update on the forthcoming reboot of the beloved NBC coming-of-age sitcom.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Bialik reaffirmed that a Blossom reboot was in development. "I’m happy to tell you that, yes, it’s true. All of the cast and the original creator and producers are on board, and we believe a reboot can and should exist once the strike ends," the actor said. "We’re hoping to reboot it not as a sitcom, though. We want to bring back these interesting, deep characters—a child of divorce, a recovering drug addict, an alcoholic—to see them in a whole new way."

Related: Report: The Office Reboot in Development Post-wga Strike

Bialik's proposed reboot sounds similar to what Peacock did with The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, reimagining the classic Will Smith-led half-hour sitcom as Bel-Air, an hourlong drama that has so far aired two seasons.

Joel Schumacher Had To Get Creative With The Lost Boys' Reduced Budget
Image
The '80s was a pretty great time to be an undead bloodsucker. Writers and directors were clearly enjoying themselves playing with the old tropes; Tony Scott's "The Hunger" dispensed with fangs altogether and toyed with the idea of vampire immortality before turning into softcore erotica; Nicolas Cage lost the plot and munched live cockroaches in "Vampire's Kiss;" Kathryn Bigelow brought a Western theme to her mean and moody "Near Dark;" and "Lifeforce" even gave us vampires from outer space. To top it all off, Count Dracula teamed up with other classic Universal monsters like the Wolf Man and the Mummy in "The Monster Squad." These movies left behind the spooky castles and misty graveyards of Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee's iconic iterations of Bram Stoker's most famous creation, bringing the vampire myth right into the modern world.

All these films are now very much a product of their time,...

‘Tron’: THR’s 1982 Review
Image
On July 9, 1982, Disney unveiled the sci-fi actioner Tron in theaters, where it would gross $33 million and, decades later, get a sequel in Tron: Legacy. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:

It would be all too easy to describe the Disney Studios’ Tron as yet another special effects movie in a year that has seen special effects achieve unprecedented heights of sophistication and technical virtuosity. It is that, of course, and it probably relies more heavily on computer-generated animations than any other movie yet produced. Both the eye and the mind are continually boggled by a bombardment of images that quite literally defy description. Who could hope to describe the electronically produced transformations that take place at faster-than-lightning speeds in the complex circuitry of a computer? They must be seen to be believed and even then you’re not quite sure.

But young Steven Lisberger, who both wrote and directed Tron,...

Lois de Banzie, the Scottish-born actress whose Broadway performance in 1980’s Morning’s At Seven scored a Tony Award nomination, died April 3 in Greenbrae, California. She was 90.

Which is Better? #7 – The Lost Boys vs. Fright Night
Image
It’s been a while since I penned a Which is Better article on here, so, as seen as Summer is making me wish Autumn was here, and I’m counting down the days for the Halloween season, I figured I’d go back to two of my favourite vampire movies ever, and pit them against each other in this almost-pointless-because-it’s-subjective-anyway battle of evil versus evil, vamp versus vamp. Fright Night versus The Lost Boys.

*Cue People are Strange by The Doors*

Ok, so I grew up with The Lost Boys on my television set and the record of the soundtrack echoing from the stereo system. I have always had a lot of fondness for the 80s glam-vamp teen-comedy that featured some of the big names from the era, with Keifer Sutherland in the role of head-but-not-quite-head vampire, David, Jason Patrick and Corey Haim as brothers Micheal and Sam,...

“One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach … All the damn vampires.”

-Grandpa (Barnard Hughes), The Lost Boys

I respectfully disagree with Grandpa’s sentiment. My favorite part about watching the faux coastal fantasia of Santa Carla is all the damn vampires. Despite being very much a time capsule capturing a certain place and cultural moment, The Lost Boys is simultaneously, a bit paradoxically, as immortal as its titular teenage vampires when it comes to being a genre staple. The 1987 horror comedy was helmed by the late great Joel Schumacher, who passed away on June 22nd. It is being celebrated today ahead of its return to Southern California theaters this Thursday at the Mission Tiki Drive-In, on a double bill with that other terrific ’80s vampire horror comedy, Fright Night (1985). It’s hard to articulate just how special and singular The Lost Boys is, but I have to try.

Veteran and beloved filmmaker Joel Schumacher has died at the age of 80 after a year-long battle with cancer.

Having started out his career as a costume designer, Schumacher soon saw his love of film take him in a new direction landing up in the director’s chair. He rose to fame after directing three hit films that wrapped up the 80s’ in a nutshell with 1985s’ ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ which starred Brat packers, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez alongside Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham. It centres on a clique of recent graduates of Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown University, and their adjustment to post-university life and the responsibilities of adulthood.

The Vampire classic ‘The Lost Boys’ followed in 1987, it starred Corey Haim, Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, Corey Feldman, Dianne Wiest, Edward Herrmann, Alex Winter, Jamison Newlander, and Barnard Hughes. The film was a critical and commercial success,...

Joel Schumacher at an event for Tigerland (2000)
The Lost Boys review – a bloody, ingenious reflection on youth
Joel Schumacher at an event for Tigerland (2000)
Joel Schumacher’s vampire romp endures for its wonderfully grown-up treatment of being young

This sprightly and satirical 80s spin on Jm Barrie’s “lost boys” from director Joel Schumacher is now rereleased in UK cinemas. Screenwriter Jeffrey Boam was reportedly drafted in to sex’n’goth up a story that was originally much more innocently Peter Pan-ish, and yet this version probably has more to say about the concept of staying for ever young.

The film is certainly an amazing time capsule for the 80s and arguably one of the great 80s kids-heroism movies, to put alongside Et: The Extra Terrestrial and The Goonies. Teenager Michael (Jason Patric) and his kid brother, Sam (Corey Haim), are arriving in a new town – the fictional Californian coastal resort of Santa Carla – with their mother, Lucy (Dianne Wiest), following her divorce, staying with their crusty old grandpa (Barnard Hughes). On the boardwalk,...

Joaquin Phoenix
‘Joker’ – the next Best Picture Oscar nominee with a violent streak?
Joaquin Phoenix
“Joker” did its job at the movie theaters, setting a box-office record for an October opening with $93 million in ticket sales – quite robust for an R-rated comic book spinoff. The origin story also lit a bonfire of critical division and controversy as it portrays Batman’s eventual arch-nemesis, Arthur Fleck, as a product of constant abuse in a rotting city that offers no safe haven for this human punching bag. No wonder during one break in what turns into a killing spree, he empties his refrigerator and hides in it.

As this emotional mess of a madman, Joaquin Phoenix invests his whole being while transforming into a wafer-thin damaged soul who just wants to make people laugh. He is like one of those wind-sock characters desperately beckoning customers who aren’t buying. Instead, the Clown Prince of Crime becomes a walking kick-me sign until he can’t take it anymore...

Rio Mangini to Play Sam in The CW’s The Lost Boys Pilot Episode
"Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire." Earlier this year, it was reported that The CW ordered a pilot episode for a potential The Lost Boys series based on the 1987 horror movie of the same name, and now the roles of Sam Emerson and his grandpa have been cast.

Deadline reports that Rio Mangini (pictured above in Everything Sucks!) will play Sam in The Lost Boys pilot episode, with Del Zamora on board to play Sam's grandfather, Frank Garcia.

In 1987's The Lost Boys, Sam was played by the late Corey Haim, while Grandpa was portrayed by the late Barnard Hughes.

According to Deadline, in the pilot episode, Sam's "high level of literacy is matched by an equally high level of snark. He seems to be the only one not enchanted by Santa Carla — a sentiment he shares with a pair of local girls,...

Tyler Posey Cast as Michael in The CW’s The Lost Boys Pilot Episode
"Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire." Earlier this year, it was reported that The CW ordered a pilot episode of the potential The Lost Boys series, and now the first casting news for the project has been revealed, as well as who will be behind the camera for the new take on the 1987 horror movie of the same name.

Deadline reports that Tyler Posey has been cast as Michael Emerson (the character played by Jason Patric in the original film) in The Lost Boys pilot episode. Joining Posey in the cast is Kiele Sanchez, who will play Michael's mother, Lucy (played by Dianne Wiest in the movie), as well as Medalion Rahimi, who will portray Stella, and Dakota Shapiro, who will play David, the leader of a group of boardwalk bloodsuckers (the character was iconically played by Kiefer Sutherand...

The Lost Boys Pilot Episode Ordered by The CW
"Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire." Back in 2016, it was reported that The CW was developing a TV series based on The Lost Boys, the beloved 1987 horror comedy about boardwalk bloodsuckers and young vampire hunters. While the news front on the project has been quiet over the past couple of years, it's now been revealed that The CW has ordered a pilot episode of the potential The Lost Boys series, in addition to pilot episodes for three other projects.

Deadline reports that The CW has ordered a Lost Boys pilot episode written by Heather Mitchell. Rob Thomas (iZombie and Veronica Mars) had previously been developing The Lost Boys series, and he'll serve as executive producer alongside Mitchell, Dan Etheridge, Mike Karz, and Bill Bindley, with Rebecca Franko on board as a producer.

According to the logline shared by Deadline,...

Criterion in October 2018: Sisters, Shampoo, The Princess Bride, Fassbinder and More
The Criterion Collection certainly walks its own path in making films available on Blu-ray. In October 2018, for example, traditionally a month when distributors focus on horror titles, Criterion will be issuing only one thriller that might fall into that category. But what a thriller! Just 32 years of age at the time of its release, Brian DePalma's Sisters started a delirious run of thrillers for him during the 70s -- my personal favorite remains Obsession -- that firmly established him in New Hollywood. The late Margot Kidder is great as a mysterious model, with Jennifer Salt as a reporter who witnesses a murder in the model's apartment. The cast includes William Finley, Charles Durning and Barnard Hughes. But writer/director DePalma is really the star...

Will Tony Shalhoub (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’) and Laurie Metcalf (‘Roseanne’) win Emmys after Tony victories?
The Tony Awards just toasted the best productions and performers of the past Broadway season, and in a few weeks two of the big winners there — Tony Shalhoub and Laurie Metcalf — may find themselves feted with nominations for Emmy Awards, too.

Shalhoub, who is a strong contender at the Emmys for the Amazon comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” took home his first Tony Award his leading role in the musical “The Band’s Visit.” Metcalf, who is in the running at the Emmys for reprising her award-winning role on the reboot of sitcom “Roseanne,” claimed her second consecutive Tony this year for her brilliant performance in Edward Albee’s “Three Tall Women.”

Cold Turkey
Norman Lear’s Cold Turkey is preferred by 4 out of 5 doctors, and the other doctor is a fool that doesn’t smoke cigarettes. Lear’s triple-threat writing, producing and directing effort is by no means a lazy comedy, with its twenty featured actors dashing around like asylum inmates for ninety minutes. It’s not the show to help one kick the habit, that’s for sure — even though it makes smoking look appropriately disgusting.

Pictures like Midnight Cowboy pulled everyone my age group into the movies, while the entire older generation likely stopped going to movies altogether. John Schlesinger’s masterpiece can boast a number of firsts, and deserves the high praise it receives from every angle — this was the epitome of progressive filmmaking circa 1969.

The Hospital
A story of murders in the ER becomes, courtesy of writer Paddy Chayefsky, either a preview of social breakdown or an impassioned examination of why we invest our lives and souls in imperfect institutions. George C. Scott is the doctor coming apart at the seams, who meets his match in a New Age hippie from a New Mexico commune. My instinct is that such a person would not look like Diana Rigg, but everybody needs a dream girl.

‘Ash vs Evil Dead 2×02′ Review
With the strong start of Ash vs Evil Dead, attention now turns to the second episode to see if it delivers. With most of the action taking place in a morgue, Bruce Campbell is given the chance to show he still has it when it comes to slapstick comedy.

Ruby is back (Lucy Lawless) and has asked Ash (Bruce Campbell) for help. In the search for the Necronomicon he finds himself alone in the morgue looking for the book, while his father Brock (Lee Majors) has a date night at home.

In my review of the season opener I did hint at the morgue scene, and it is one that you do have to have a strong stomach for. The main comedy piece is something that you can see coming, and when you see it, it is as disgusting as you expect. The payoff after this scene is fitting as typically for Ash,...

The Lost Boys TV Series Casts Tyler Posey, Catherine Hardwicke to Direct
Tony Sokol Alec Bojalad Kirsten Howard Feb 20, 2019

The Lost Boys TV reboot lives again with The CW announcing that it has officially ordered a pilot for the show.

The Lost Boys TV series has been ruminating at The CW since 2016. Now the network has confirmed that it has officially ordered a pilot of the reboot of the popular '80s vampire film. Not too shabby for a group of long undead vampires.

Rob Thomas, who created Veronica Mars and iZombie, was originally set to be the showrunner, writer and executive producer through his Spondoolie Productions, along with Danielle Stokdyk, Dan Etheridge, Mike Karz and Bill Bindley. Thomas remains on the project as an executive producer but he also has a busy dance card with the Veronica Mars revival set to debut this year on Hulu. There's no word if he will remain on as showrunner. The pilot script will be...

The CW Developing The Lost Boys TV Series
“Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.” The CW is looking to tap into the fun and frightening concoction of Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys, as they are developing a TV series based on the beloved film.

Deadline broke the news about The Lost Boys TV series, which is being developed and written by Rob Thomas (iZombie, Veronica Mars) at The CW in conjunction with Gulfstream TV and Warner Bros Television.

According to Deadline, the series is being planned by Thomas as a massive seven-season story that would follow an immortal group of vampires (the Lost Boys) as they live through the triumphs and tribulations of each decade. Each season would be set in a new decade, with the debut season expected to take place in San Francisco circa 1967.

It’s unknown at this time whether or not...

The Lost Boys Is Getting a Comic Book Sequel
Jami Gertz, Corey Haim, Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Brooke McCarter, Alex Winter, and Billy Wirth in The Lost Boys (1987)
Truth, justice and the American way prevail! It seems we're getting a true Lost Boys 2, only in the form of a comic. 30 years removed from the release of the original cult classic, this is perhaps the only way to go, especially since one of the main stars has long since drifted into the chilly night air of Santa Carla. The Lost Boys sequel comic will pick up where we last left Sam, Mike, his mother and their vampire fighting Grandpa.

There's no denying that The Lost Boys is an 80s cult classic that has a legion of fans. But the franchise hasn't exactly faired well over the past few decades. The movie was supposed to get a true sequel heading into the 90s, which never happened. It would have revolved around an all-girl vampire coven, and may have just been too far ahead of its time. It wasn't until 2008 that...
