"Undone" is impressive for many reasons, but its ability to combine wildly different genres might be the biggest. On the one hand, there's the stark depiction of listless 20-year-old Alma Winograd-Diaz (Rosa Salazar) and her family drama, which makes the show so emotionally affecting. On the other, there's the wild time and space-bending sci-fi adventure featuring the ghost of her late father, Jacob Winograd (Bob Odenkirk). In the show's first season, after a car accident gives Alma the ability to traverse space and time, she embarks on a multi-dimensional journey to try to solve the mystery of her father's death.
To help pull off such an ambitiously innovative project, "BoJack Horseman" alums Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy used rotoscoping — an animation style created by tracing over real footage. Netflix’s “The Sandman” was always meant to have 11 episodes in its first season — you just didn’t know it until the special final installment, a two-part animated and live-action story titled “A Dream of a Thousand Cats”/”Calliope,” dropped Friday.
Or, if you’re a diehard fan who has been following every piece of “Sandman” news since the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved graphic novels was first ordered to series in July 2019, you might have been slightly gaslit into not remembering that there were 11 episodes when the 10-episode season launched two weeks ago.

This post contains spoilers for The Sandman season one and beyond.
“Ideas in abundance.” Believe it or not, that’s a curse pronounced by Morpheus in “Calliope,” one of the best stories in The Sandman. “Ideas in abundance” sounds like a particularly strange curse for The Sandman, the seminal Neil Gaiman comic book series so rich in concepts and themes that the Netflix adaptation retains much of its depth, even as it necessarily cuts or reimagines some elements. Fans of the series will get to see more of those abundant ideas soon, as Netflix has announced a surprise 11th episode to The Sandman season 1, which adapts not only “Calliope” but also another fan-favorite tale, “A Dream of a Thousand Cats.” Both stories flesh out Dream’s world and the rules of the Dreaming but “Calliope” has deep implications for Morpheus’s larger career arc, paving the way for the end of his story.

Dreams don’t always have a habit of coming true, especially when it comes to Netflix giving the green light to people’s favorite shows. While many fans assumed that The Sandman Season 2 is a lock, the Master of the Dreaming himself, Neil Gaiman, says otherwise.
Gaiman posted a cryptic tweet to his Twitter account on Friday, referencing a bonus episode for the first season that’s available to watch now. Before Gaiman revealed the nature of his mysterious message, a fan asked if he was confirming a Season 2 pick-up for the series. Unfortunately, Gaiman says the future of The Sandman is uncertain, and Netflix is playing a game of wait-and-see before opening their wallet for another journey into the Dreaming.

Amazing news for fans of "The Sandman": Netflix just released a surprise hour-long bonus episode! The first 10 episodes of season one began streaming on Aug. 5 and brought fans into the world of Dream (Tom Sturridge), Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie), and the Endless. Now, the 11th surprise episode expands on that universe even more. "The Sandman" creator Neil Gaiman teased the release of the bonus installment in a tweet on Aug. 19, writing, "It would be nice if there were more than just the 10 episodes of Sandman in Season 1."
The two-part episode is titled "A Dream of a Thousand Cats/Calliope." Netflix says, "In the two-part story collection, a Siamese cat dreaming of a new world and a writer in desperate need of inspiration cross paths with Morpheus." The "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" story is the only animated episode of "The Sandman." Sturridge voices the animated, feline version of Dream.

Fans of "The Sandman" won't have to wait long for another entry in the series. That's because Netflix has quietly added a new bonus episode of the series as a tease for its all-but-confirmed second season. This episode combines two standalone stories from the "Dream Country" arc from the original "Sandman" comics, "A Dream of a Thousand Cats" and "Calliope," and they have just as impressive of a creative team as the mainline series.
"A Dream of a Thousand Cats," directed by "Undone" director Hisko Hulsing, is animated using 2D techniques and the implementation of real oil paintings of each frame. In a statement sent to /Film, Hulsing described this animation process as "mesmerizing and hypnotic," resulting in "a trippy world that feels both grounded and dreamy at the same time." Among its voice cast are Sandra Oh, Michael Sheen, David Tennant, James McAvoy, and Neil Gaiman himself.

Netflix’s hit fantasy series “The Sandman” hasn’t been renewed just yet, but if you want more from the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved comic book series, your dreams (sorry) just came true.
Right now you can watch “A Dream of A Thousand Cats/Calliope,” a brand new, surprise bonus episode of “The Sandman,” featuring guest stars Sandra Oh, Michael Shannon, James McAvoy, David Tennant, the great Derek Jacobi, and many more.
Like “The Sound of Her Wings” before it, “A Dream of A Thousand Cats/Calliope” combines two different “The Sandman” comic book stories for a single-episode story.
“Calliope,” directed by Louise Hooper and based on “The Sandman” issue #17, follows Richard Madoc, a one hit wonder novelist crippled by writer’s block who is offered a guaranteed cure — for a sickening and cruel price.

‘Undone’ Creators on the Incredible Ingenuity Required for Season 2 — and Why They’re Ready for More
When an “Undone” viewer stops to consider the challenges that go into creating Prime Video’s acclaimed family drama — which uses rotoscope animation as part of an expansive artistic palette — plenty of awe-inspiring examples spring to mind. Perhaps they think of the rapid time shifts, when Alma (Rosa Salazar) moves backward and forward in the blink of an eye, searching the past and present for clues about her father’s death. Or maybe it’s when rooms, buildings, and people evaporate as Jacob (Bob Odenkirk) teaches her how to alter reality — and maybe bring him back from the dead — through time travel. In Season 2, many may point to the moving, semi-traversable M.C. Escher painting that appears in later episodes, as a key character’s entire life is embodied within gravity-defying stairways, rooms, and venues, while the family works to mend old wounds by (literally) navigating their ancestor’s history.

Rotoscope animation is a rare technique on television, and a rare one to see used as well as it is in Prime Video’s “Undone.”
Created by Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the series is shot in live-action on green screen soundstages, with the footage animated by the companies Submarine and Minnow Mountain. The result is a formally inventive series that uses dreamlike, hazy animated imagery to tell the slippery story of Alma (Rosa Salazar) as she confronts her memories of her father’s death by leaping through time to prevent it.
For the show’s recent second season, the animation of “Undone” gets even more ambitious, as the narrative sees Alma and her sister Becca (Angelique Cabral) travel into the memories and traumatic pasts of their father Jacob (Bob Odenkirk), mother Camila (Constance Marie) and eventually their grandmother Geraldine (Holley Fain). The further they travel through time, the more the animation distorts reality,...

Season 1 of “Undone” pulled off the magic trick of being grounded and fantastical all at once. It showed that a touching father-daughter story can still happen even as both of them are tumbling through different forms of reality and a jumble of stitched-together timelines. The Prime Video series’ co-creator and writer Kate Purdy helped to steer the story of Alma Winograd-Diaz (Rosa Salazar), a young woman recovering from a car accident who becomes convinced that she can communicate with the spirit of her dead father Jacob (Bob Odenkirk).
That initial germ of an idea spread over the course of the show’s first eight episodes, expanding along with Alma’s consciousness. With Alma perceiving glitches in time and revisiting her own memories as easily as if she were walking into an adjoining room, the details she found on each new go-round with the past led her closer to some uncomfortable truths about her family.

It’s been more than two and a half years since Prime Video’s Undone debuted on the streamer, but for Alma Winograd-Diaz, time is merely relative.
In Season 2 of the genre-bending animated series (all eight episodes will be released on Friday, April 29), Alma realizes there are deeper mysteries in her family’s past. However, no one in her family is interested in digging into these uncomfortable truths — until she finally convinces Becca to help. As the sisters search for answers, they unravel a complex network of memories and motivations that have shaped who they are today.

With Amazon’s Undone, Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy endeavored to break new ground, methodically crafting the first television series created in its entirety through rotoscope animation.
A gorgeously surreal drama starring Rosa Salazar, Undone tells the story of Alma, a woman who discovers that she has a new relationship to time, after surviving a horrific car crash. Harnessing the powers that come to her in the aftermath of this event, the character sets out to piece together the story behind her father’s mysterious and untimely death.
Widely known for their work on Netflix’s Bojack Horseman, Bob-Waksberg and Purdy embarked on Undone with almost no knowledge of rotoscoping—a process that is incredibly intensive, in terms of both time and labor. Produced over the course of a year, Season 1 would ultimately comprise 50,000 hours of work in character animation, and 130,000 hand drawn frames.
But for the series’ creators, the unknown was nothing to fear.

As far as format-breaking television goes, Amazon Prime Video’s “Undone” tops the list. The story centers on a young woman named Alma (Rosa Salazar) who develops the ability to jump through space and time after a terrible car accident and tries to uncover the truth about her father’s death by doing so. While the series is a drama and shoots live-action with actors including Bob Odenkirk, Constance Marie and Angelique Cabral, the final result is animated, with all characters and props rotoscoped and backgrounds painted in. This allows for complex sequences, such as one in the second episode in which the hospital cafeteria breaks apart around Rosa and her father (Odenkirk), throwing her back into her hospital bed.

The awards ceremony for the most important animation festival of the year was… quiet. Instead celebrating in the iconic lakeside and mountains, this year’s awards were announced via live recording and an emailed newsletter. Annecy International Animated Film Festival went completely online this year.
After a few years with geographical focuses in Asian countries, this year’s festival still has had a relatively kind focus towards East Asian films. Notable Asia-based directors this year include the return of neo media artist Max Hattler (“Divisional Articulations”) with minimalist stop motion “Serial Parallels,” and Yifan Bao’s Satoshi Kon-esque, first film “The Town.” All in all, roughly 25 percent of the 21 awards in total went to Asia-based directors.
For the full list, consult the results below. Keep tabs on our reviews page of some of our festival favorites; Annecy is available to stream (for 17 euros!) until 30 June 2020.

With Amazon Prime Video’s “Undone,” TV has its own version of “A Scanner Darkly” and “Waking Life,” but its a work that is far more advanced in its use of rotoscope animation for trippy storytelling. The latest series from “BoJack Horseman” producers Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg examines perception, reality, and existence in a fantastical journey through space and time.

Amazon has renewed the adult animated series “Undone” for a second season.
The news comes a couple months after season 1 dropped on the streamer, and Amazon Studios has also announced an overall deal with the show’s co-creator and executive producer Kate Purdy.
“Undone” is a half-hour dramedy that explores the elastic nature of reality through its central character, Alma, played by Rosa Salazar. After getting into a near fatal car accident, Alma discovers she has a new relationship with time and uses this ability to find out the truth about the death of her father. Our genre television podcast hosts review the genre-defying animated tour de force Undone on Amazon Prime Video.
When we came across Undone, created by Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg of BoJack Horseman fame, we figured most of the appeal would come from the realistic, rotoscoped animation, which reminded us of Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly or Waking Life. But what we quickly realized was this technique, combined with a completely unique form of time travel, allowed director Hisko Hulsing to create a world that felt real but could be dismantled and rearranged at a whim, which wouldn't have worked with live action without a lot of money.
In this week's Sci Fi Fidelity, we break down the first three episodes of Undone, in which 28-year-old Alma Winograd-Diaz, played by Rosa Salazar of Alita: Battle Angel, is dissatisfied with her boring life, causing her to sabotage...

Netflix’s BoJack Horseman has been one of the best shows on television since it debuted in 2014. It is a hilarious satire of celebrity and show business, while also being a profoundly sad portrait of depression, loneliness and substance abuse. Virtually the only complaint I’ve ever heard from anyone who’s watched more than the first few episodes is that its visual style is intentionally primitive, bordering on ugly. (And even that allows for elaborate background gags and bizarrely compelling designs of the show’s many animal/human hybrid characters.

When Kate Purdy wanted to tell a story about the nature of reality, she knew she wanted to play with perception and time, fade in and out of memories and give voice to visions that only her main character could see. And it wasn’t long before the executive producer and co-creator of Amazon’s new series, “Undone,” realized that only animation could make the kinds of leaps and bounds her story needed.
“In 2012, I had a nervous breakdown, and I was struggling with depression, and anxiety and I didn’t know what to do about it,” says Purdy, who wants the series, which debuts Sept. 13, to convey what she experienced. Executive produced by “BoJack Horseman” creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the show stars Rosa Salazar (“Alita: Battle Angel”) as Alma, a woman who discovers after an accident that she has an unusual relationship with time, which she uses to unravel the mystery of her dead father,...

A genre-bending series that sends its heroine through time and space to unlock a family mystery, the Amazon Prime Video Original “Undone” breaks new ground by becoming the first episodic series wholly created through rotoscope animation.
While animated shows have been part of the television landscape for decades, rotoscope provides a unique view in which to tell this complex story. Industry veterans Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, who were producers on acclaimed animated series “BoJack Horseman,” bring us the rotoscoped series Undone. To explain what to expect before getting started on the series, we have prepared the following primer on rotoscope animation.
First, what’s the show about?
After an auto accident leaves Alma Winograd-Diaz (Rosa Salazar) hospitalized, she begins to experience visions of her late father, Jacob (Bob Odenkirk), who encourages her to explore her newfound ability to bend reality in order to help solve his untimely death. But...

One of the first things you see in “Undone” is a car crash. One of the last things you see, in the pilot at least, is a car crash. One of the things you see the most over five episodes of Season 1 — in a myriad of different ways, interrupting various other moments — is this same exact car crash, where Alma (Rosa Salazar) gets T-boned after running a stop sign because she sees… something… on the side of the road. That “something” holds great meaning to the central mystery, but, as it first appears in the show, it’s just a few brush strokes on the giant canvas that is “Undone”; it’s an important part, but also a means to the bigger picture — and I’m not just talking about the show’s groundbreaking format.

Despite the catastrophic crash that opens the series, it takes some time for “Undone” to reveal its story’s surprising depths. It seems at first to just be about Alma (Rosa Salazar), a San Antonio woman who spends just about every waking hour trudging through her own depressive fog, hoping that one day something extraordinary might happen to shake her out of it and prove that there’s something even mildly interesting worth living for. She has a job as a preschool teacher, a perfectionist younger sister (Angelique Cabral), a perpetually worried mother (Constance Marie), and an easygoing boyfriend (Siddarth Dhananjay) who insists he likes Alma the way she is, to her knee-jerk suspicion. She’s never gotten over the sudden death of her father (Bob Odenkirk). She’s disaffected, very funny, and a little mean despite herself. She also believes, as she tells her sister during a particularly tough conversation,...

Let’s try a pitch: A streaming half-hour animated series from Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy that tackles the monotony of adult life, the burden of relationships, the trauma we inherit from our families, mental illness, and depression. So basically, Bojack Horseman, you might say. Not quite. A talking horse doesn’t even begin to touch the mind-bending aspects of Amazon’s new series, Undone.
Undone centers on Alma, played by Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel), a 28-year old going through the motions with her boyfriend Sam (Siddharth Dhananjay). Alma starts becoming restless about her boring, seemingly predetermined future when her sister Becca (Angelique Cabral) gets engaged. TV has used rotoscope animation before, but never has it been used in every scene of an ongoing series — until now. Amazon’s upcoming half-hour drama/sci-fi/comedy hybrid “Undone” screened its first two episodes at Comic-Con Thursday afternoon, wowing a large crowd with the trippy story of a young woman investigating her past to solve the mystery of her father’s death.
Star Rosa Salazar took part in a panel discussion following the screening, alongside co-creators and executive producers Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, and the “Alita: Battle Angel” actress said she “immediately connected” to the story — before she was even told her performance would go through rotoscope animation.

Animation is often a medium that tackles the core tenets of reality. The latest project from “BoJack Horseman” producers Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg looks to be doing that on a lofty and sweeping scale. “Undone,” the newest animated series for Amazon Prime Video, follows the consciousness of Alma (Rosa Salazar) as she navigates an expansive mental universe.
The first two episodes of the series will debut for audiences at the Atx Festival in Austin this weekend, and the series is slated to join the Amazon Prime Video family of programming later this year.
The official synopsis for the series explains that Alma’s life is an ordinary one “until a near fatal accident induces visions of her late father, Jacob. Through these persistent visions he urges her to tap into a mysterious ability that allows her to travel through space and time with the hopes of preventing his untimely death.

It is hard to tell whether or not Kurt Cobain would have enjoyed Brett Morgen’s new documentary about him, one that scribbles his most revealing journal entries onto a big screen and digs into the deepest, darkest parts of his artistic temperament. Cobain was highly suspicious of journalists and didn’t like to explain the songs he wrote. He preferred letting the listener provide his or her own meaning to the music.
Regardless of what the Nirvana frontman may have thought of this raw, revealing documentary, airing on HBO May 4 after a brief stint in theaters, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is one of the most riveting rock biographies ever made. Cobain considered himself an “acne superstar,” and Morgen’s film highlights both parts of that, from his adolescent as a bored, lonely manic-depressive to the dizzying, if sordid heights of fame that followed Nevermind’s bounce to the top of the Billboard charts.

The legacy of Kurt Cobain is one of maddening genius, maddening potential and the maddening disappointment and betrayal of how much of that potential went unfulfilled when he took his own life at 27. Maybe that's why my immediate reaction to Brett Morgen's Sundance premiere documentary "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck" was visceral pleasure and appreciation, but a maddening uncertainty about what else I was supposed to take from the film. And maybe that's why after five more minutes of contemplating "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck," I was able ponder the possibility that Morgen wants his documentary to be definitive exactly be virtue of being so undefinitive. An often spectacular piece of multi-media assemblage, takes viewers on a journey at least somewhat into Kurt Cobain's brain and into his life and if that leaves you wanting more... Well, of course it does. "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck" begins with practically feigned happiness in Aberdeen,...

This animated short was written and directed by Hisko Hulsing, and it's pretty amazing. The short tells the powerful and compelling story of a man who is robbed and stabbed on a metro train. As he lies dying, a friendship from his youth flashes before his eyes. This is such a freakin' great film, and it's beautifully animated. It has one of those endings that just kind of hits you in the gut. This is a must watch, so check it out when you get a chance.
