Frederik Louis Hviid’s The Quiet Ones is a reminder of the simple pleasures of a caper film with ice in its veins, populated with men whose fortitude predisposes them to pulling off a big job. In the case of this film, the job is a real one that occurred in 2008 amid the global economic collapse, and the 71 million kroner take made it the biggest robbery in the history of Denmark. The film’s staunch commitment to verisimilitude is its greatest strength, with Hviid’s patient, subdued approach to the material crystallizing the life-or-death stakes of the heist.
At the center of the operation are its two tight-lipped, meticulous masterminds: wannabe boxer Kasper (Gustav Dyekjær Giese) and his slick, mustachioed Moroccan friend Slimani (Reda Kateb). Throughout the film, we witness the lengths that the two men and their accomplices go to in order to test the viability of their plans.

“Crazy Rich Asians” is heading for a glamorous first weekend with an estimated $22 million from 3,384 North American locations.
The Warner Bros. film debuted August 15 and has already racked up $16 million. Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, and Michelle Yeoh star in the Asian-led pic, the first of its kind since 1993’s “The Joy Luck Club.”
“Crazy Rich Asians” currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 92% certified fresh and an A CinemaScore. Jon M. Chu directed from a screenplay by Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim.

"Leaders are born from survival." Whoa. Sony has released a new trailer for the movie Alpha, which was originally set for release in March but then delayed until August this year. We featured the first trailer for this last year, almost a year ago, but the studio freaked. This new trailer is much different - selling it more as an uplifting tale like one of those fun nature documentaries. Very interesting pivot. This adventure follows the story of Zeta, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, a young man injured on a bison hunt left for dead. He befriends a lone wolf and together they figure out how to survive. The full cast includes Natassia Malthe, Leonor Varela, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Mercedes de la Zerda, and Jens Hultén. I can't believe they're actually trying to sell this as the story of the first dog, that's some serious pandering. Oh well. Here's the new...

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer and poster for their upcoming Ice Age adventure film Alpha. The film comes from director Albert Hughes, the co-director of films such as Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, From Hell and The Book of Eli, which was a solo directing gig.
I'm not sure about this movie. The trailers that have been released haven't done a very good job selling me on it. My kids want to see it, so maybe that's the film's market. Maybe it will end up being a decent watchable adventure movie, but I'm not expecting much.
The story is set in Europe 20,000 years ago during the Ice Age. "While on his first hunt with his tribe’s most elite group, a young man is injured and left for dead. Awakening to find himself broken and alone -- he must learn to survive and navigate the harsh and unforgiving wilderness.
I'm not sure about this movie. The trailers that have been released haven't done a very good job selling me on it. My kids want to see it, so maybe that's the film's market. Maybe it will end up being a decent watchable adventure movie, but I'm not expecting much.

"An enemy will become an ally." Sony Pictures has unveiled a trailer for an epic new action thriller titled Alpha, formerly known as The Solutrean (which is a very weird title so it makes sense they changed it). This is the latest feature film from Albert Hughes, who last directed The Book of Eli in 2010, and it's set during the last Ice Age - 20,000 years ago (kind of like Emmerich's 10,000 BC). This epic adventure follows the story of Zeta, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, a young man injured on a bison hunt left for dead. He befriends a lone wolf and together they figure out how to survive in this harsh environment. So basically it's The Revenant meets 10,000 BC. The Solutrean, which will be the first film to come out of the Sony-owned Studio 8, has finished up casting. Kodi-Smit McPhee (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) will star in the film, with Jóhannes Haukur Johannesson (A.D. An archaeolgist and his friend go on an epic treasure hunt in the second trailer for Ragnarok, nine months after Magnolia Picures debuted the first trailer in September. Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen and Nicolai Cleve Broch star as Signurd Svendsen and Allan, who explore an area known as "No man's land" between Norway and Russia, on a quest for a treasure that could unlock the secret behind Ragnarok, which signifies the end of days in Norse mythology. Watch as the ancient beast behind this mystery is teased in the latest footage for this upcoming adventure, in theaters August 15.
Archaeologist Sigurd Svendsen (Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen) has for years been obsessed with the Oseberg Viking ship. The only inscription found on the ship is the enigmatic ´man knows little` written in runes. Chicago – Why can’t American studios make thrillers like “Wallander: The Revenge”? As a matter of fact, why can’t we make ones like the recent production of “Sherlock” or even “Luther”? Perhaps it’s something about producing for TV that gives people more creative depth but the best thrillers so far this year have been the three episodes of “Sherlock” and this week’s release of “Wallander: The Revenge,” opening at Music Box today and available next week in a massive DVD box set.
“Wallander: The Revenge” is actually the season premiere of the second series of TV episodes that aired on Swedish television in 2009. While you may be tempted to avoid something produced for TV, “The Revenge” has theatrical caliber production values and performances. If you didn’t know, you’d never guess that it wasn’t made with a theatrical release in mind from the very beginning.
