Maurtz Hugo was born on January 12 1909 in Gothenburg, Sweden to Augusta Detterberg and Ernst Robert Ekelöf, one of the city's first movie owners, as Axel Hugo Mauritz Ekelöf. He left home at age 15 to seek his fortune in the USA and found the way to California where PR jobs led to the start of his acting career.
