There’s a moment in Apple TV+’s “Government Cheese” where David Oyelowo’s character is swallowed by a catfish. “That’s something I didn’t have on my dance card, and something I’m sure not a lot of actors can say that they’ve done,” Oyelowo tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. Tthe phrase that keeps coming up from people is it’s unlike anything they’ve seen. That, in and of itself, is a huge source of pride for me.”
But in the surrealist comedy, anything is possible. “That is definitely part of the joy of both doing it, and I hope watching it, is that you’re getting to see scenarios you haven’t really seen before,” Oyelowo says. That includes “seeing a Black family under these circumstances that you haven’t seen them in before, but in a familiar time.”

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains details of Season 1 of Government Cheese
In Apple TV+’s latest caper, Government Cheese, family is at the forefront. Co-created by Paul Hunter—who also serves as co-showrunner, executive producer, writer and director—the surrealist dramedy set in 1960s San Fernando Valley tells the story of the Chambers family, an eclectic bunch of individuals with their own awe-inspiring passions and desires. The striving family is soon plagued with drama and hijinks upon the return of Hampton (David Oyelowo), the husband of Astoria (Simone Missick) and father of their two children, Harrison (Jahi Di’Allo Watson) and Einstein (Evan Ellison), after he is released from prison.
Here, Deadline speaks with Hunter about inspirations, family ties and portraying the nuclear Black family.

You know what sounds like a hard sell to a Hollywood studio? A chain smoking antihero with a bad attitude and terminal lung cancer whom God himself doesn’t like. Dipping in and out of actual Hell. Where, by the way, Satan can’t wait to torture him for eternity. Oh, and it’s a large-ish budget superhero movie based on a DC/Vertigo comic. It’s a road that would include lawsuits, a music video director, a comic book creator who would rather leave free money on the table than be involved, and the MPAA gumming up the works. But where there’s a Keanu Reeves….there’s a way. This is what happened to Constantine.
The origins of Constantine began in June of 1986 when famed comic creator Alan Moore introduced him in The Saga of Swamp Thing #37. The occult investigator from England was on the hunt for information...

It was Paul Hunter's existence, and there was an elevated element of surrealism to everything. It's a quirky family, but it's all based on Paul's upbringing as a young guy. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley in the sixties and seventies, every time we had a scene that I just thought was a little bit outlandish, Paul would have some anecdote that rooted it in the truth of what happened with him, which is how I approached playing a version of his dad.

The new Apple TV+ series Government Cheese is making its way through Season 1, offering a surrealist and comedic experience led by a laugh-out-loud David Oyelowo. Yes, the English lad can do the funny stuff, let's not forget, with a flawless American accent and all.
Oyelowo's unique new show, co-created by Paul Hunter (director of the cult classic Bulletproof Monk), actually began as a short film of the same name roughly six years ago. And now, here we are with the San Fernando Valley-set saga, with events unfolding in the landmark year 1969. MovieWeb recently caught up with Hunter to learn more about Government Cheese, whose elements are pulled from Hunter's life, and how it evolved into the quirky series it is today.

Anyone who's tuned into Government Cheese on Apple TV+ knows David Oyelowo's surrealist new series is no stranger to instances of divine intervention. It's a unique small-screen experience that is often comedic and thought-provoking all at once, and this week's episode continues the theological trend to thrilling effect. Aspiring drill salesman Hampton (played magically by Oyelowo) is in the midst of a fishing trip with his son Harrison (Jahi Di'Allo Watson), and anyone familiar with the Bible might recall the story of Jonah, a disciple who rejects his divine orders and ultimately ends up swallowed by a great fish — literally.
And wouldn't you know it, in episode 6 of Government Cheese, Hampton finds himself ignoring the stern advice of a whimsical stranger amid his fishing trip and later finds himself thrown overboard, with a fate that somewhat matches that of Jonah's...when Hampton comes face to face with an enormous whale.

The Halo video game franchise has been wildly successful for a variety of reasons, beyond its groundbreaking gameplay. Dating back to Halo: Combat Evolved on the original Xbox, the stories have consistently introduced engaging characters that users have grown to cherish and root for. That also extended to the Paramount+ series adaptation, which ran for two seasons before getting canceled last year.
Fans of the franchise certainly had their thoughts on how the video game's story was adapted to the small screen, though one TV character that stole the show across the board was Soren-066, a Spartan candidate played to perfection by Bokeem Woodbine. MovieWeb recently spoke with the Emmy-nominated performer while he was promoting his latest series Government Cheese, now streaming on Apple TV+. Woodbine also weighed in on the recent cancellation of Halo and his time on the project — including the potential TV future of Soren.

‘Government Cheese’ Review: David Oyelowo’s Quirky Apple Comedy Is Undone by a Conventional Antihero
Typically, brevity in television is a gift. There are always exceptions, but in the age of streaming bloat, second-screen experiences, and TV being reduced to content, clocking a tight running time is an early indicator of efficiency, confidence, or (somewhat conversely) ambition. “Government Cheese” is a different kind of exception — an aberration not because it thrives while blowing past its adopted episode lengths, but because it’s so condensed it’s barely even there.
Despite the 43-minute premiere being the longest episode of its 10-part first season, “Government Cheese” doesn’t know what to do with the little time it has, and the series’ aimlessness grows more evident with each mercifully fleeting entry. By the time the last two episodes roll around, it’s as if co-showrunners Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr have given up on their own show. There’s no hook to lure viewers back for a potential...

Fresh out of prison, Hampton Chambers has big dreams… but his family has moved on without him.
Family reunions can be messy, but “Government Cheese” takes it to a whole new level. This surrealist comedy from Apple TV+ throws David Oyelowo into the chaos as Hampton Chambers, a man fresh out of prison whose homecoming doesn’t go quite as planned. His wife (Simone Missick) and kids have built an unconventional family unit in his absence, and his return sends their world into a tailspin. Set in the late ‘60s San Fernando Valley, the show explores the “American Dream” and what happens when it spirals out of control. “Government Cheese” premieres Wednesday, April 16, with the first four episodes dropping exclusively on Apple TV+.

Even at the peak of Peak TV, the medium’s gatekeepers were resistant to making full-fledged commitments to surrealism and absurdity. But that hasn’t stopped some weird curios from sneaking through.
There have been long-running favorites like Fargo, critical hits like I’m a Virgo, cult treasures like Lodge 49 and Baskets, plus a bunch of quickly forgotten oddities like Apple TV+’s Hello Tomorrow! and The Big Door Prize and Sunny or Amazon’s Mammals. These misfit outliers in a medium generally designed to reach the widest audience possible mostly haven’t been breakouts, but there’s a good chance that each show I mentioned found some small audience that felt blessed to have been granted a series that spoke to them plus maybe a dozen other people. There’s no point in having art if everything is a Law & Order or medical procedural and nothing features a...

Plot: A surrealist family comedy set in 1969 San Fernando Valley that tells the story of the Chambers, a quirky family pursuing lofty and seemingly impossible dreams, beautifully unfettered by the realities of the world. When Hampton Chambers is released from prison, his long-awaited family reunion doesn’t go quite as he’d planned. During his absence, Hampton’s wife, Astoria, and sons, Einstein and Harrison, have formed an unconventional family unit, and Hampton’s return spins their world into chaos.

Ever stumbled upon a show that feels like a weird binge-worthy project you can’t overlook? Well, that’s how I felt when I first heard about Apple TV+’s surrealist comedy series, Government Cheese. Set in the summer of 1969, San Fernando Valley, the show follows Hampton Chambers, an ex-convict, trying to rebuild his life and fit in with his family after prison.
But this isn’t your typical redemption story. With surreal twists, unexpected humor, and a touch of satire, this show seems both entertaining and thought-provoking to me. Plus, the title itself—Government Cheese—piqued my curiosity. What does it mean? Why cheese? I’m all in to find out.
So, here are three main aspects that skyrocketed my excitement for this quirky series.

Government Cheese takes an unusual angle on a very well-covered historical moment.
Apple TV+’s surrealist comedy series from creators Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr is set in the summer of 1969, the tumultuous time of the moon landing, Woodstock, the Manson murders, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, etc. But none of that is in the show. Instead, the show is tightly focused on the personal story of the Chambers family, a Black family living in the San Fernando Valley. They’re not so concerned with the tumult of the outside world, because their lives — their jobs, relationships, and their search for God and meaning — are tumultuous enough.
The project’s different vision of the era is what drew star and executive producer David Oyelowo to it. Earlier in his career, Oyelowo appeared in a trio of hit films — The Help, Lee Daniels' The Butler, and Selma — that deal...

David Oyelowo is headed back to the 1960s, but this time he isn't playing Martin Luther King, Jr. No, this time the Selma star is diving headfirst into comedy, tackling the role of an inventor-slash-criminal, finally out of prison and ready to give his family the life they deserve. Only — as the tagline of the new AppleTV+ series states — "second chances are never that simple." Particularly in the surrealist world in which the Chambers family lives. But you won't have to wait until the series' premiere to get a sense of what we mean, as the streaming service has finally released a trailer you can watch right now.
Popping up now to let people know about its just-announced premiere date (keep reading to find out!), the Government Cheese trailer takes us back to the San Fernando Valley of 1969. Here, according to the official synopsis, is where we find the Chambers,...

Hailing from the U.K., David Oyelowo wasn’t familiar with the term “government cheese,” the processed cheese given to welfare recipients and to U.S. schools and food banks since the 1940s. But his new Apple Original series, “Government Cheese,” gives the term new meaning anyway.
“It’s a very intriguing title,” Oyelowo tells Variety, previewing the series. “A good title is a very hard thing to find — especially a title that has layered meanings and is analogous to what the show is about.”
Oyelowo stars as Hampton Chambers, the patriarch of a family living in southern California’s San Fernando Valley in 1969. The Chambers – wife Astoria (Simone Missick) and sons Einstein (Evan Ellison) and Harrison (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) — are a quirky bunch pursuing lofty and seemingly impossible dreams.
The plot kicks off when Hampton is released from prison, and, as the series synopsis explains, his long-awaited family reunion...

Director Francis Lawrence truly deserves credit for Constantine's cult following. He recently revealed how a last-minute meeting with Keanu Reeves ensured that they would collaborate on the film.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence said that he is still floored by Constantine's insane following. "It was one of those weird, strange, beautiful things to see that fan base grow," he explained. "Everywhere I go, people have Constantine DVDs. People still want to talk about it.I'm very happy about that, as opposed to people having hated it or forgotten it. That would be awful. The reverse has happened." Lawrence, who directed music videos for Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Britney Spears before Constantine, said he was almost left out of the film because of his prior credits.

Whenever you have an original breakout hit in the horror genre it generally means you can expect at least about eight sequels cashing in on the concept. The latest to spawn a hoped-for franchise is writer-director Finn Parker’s follow-up to his smash 2022 debut feature Smile (which made $200 million globally), which he promises is “bigger, bolder, more off the rails, nastier and bloodier” and 10 times the impact of the first film. That may be, but Smile 2, at a bloated running time of 2 hours and 7 minutes, is basically just following the template of the original, which dealt with a metaphysical being inhabiting its victims in the form of a human with a haunting smile on their face, actually a curse passed on from one possessed individual to the next.
In Smile the key protagonist was a psychiatrist, Dr. Rose Cotter, played gamely by Sosi Bacon who in her quest to...

When California State University Northridge’s head of film production Nate Thomas came to visit one of his first students, Paul Hunter, on the set of the new David Oyelowo-starring Apple TV Plus series “Government Cheese,” the Northridge alum and show co-creator could be heard boasting about his time in the program.
After learning to tell stories at Csun, Hunter spun a renowned career directing music videos for Beyonce and U2, among others, into helming Bacardi spots with Michael B. Much of that has been through PrettyBird, a Hollywood commercial house he co-founded and uses in part to help foster and launch the careers of other underrepresented voices. “It all started at Northridge,” Thomas says. “We do filmmaking not just for the privileged. Oscar winning documentary producer is at Sheffield DocFest with Chris Smith’s ‘Wham’ and Sundance hit The Deepest Breath.
Ventureland co-founder John Battsek knew the chance to tell a postive, upbeat story about the UK 1980s pop band Wham! could very well appeal to sought-after young audiences.
Wham! , directed by the US’ Chris Smith, was one of two new films with which the Oscar-winning documentary producer was at Sheffield DocFest in the UK last week. The other was Laura McGann’s Sundance hit, The Deepest Breath, about Italian freediving champion Alessia Zecchini, which was acquired by Netflix late last year.
