Michele Mulroney Running (Unopposed, for Now) to Lead Writers Guild West
Image
Michele Mulroney is running for president of the Writers Guild of America West — unopposed, at least for now — after current president Meredith Stiehm termed out after nearly four years at the helm.

The union announced the news alongside the names of other initial candidates running for officer and board positions in its 2025 elections on Monday. Crucially, the election will determine the leaders that will guide the WGA West through its 2026 contract negotiations, its first with major film and television studios since the 148-day strike in 2023.

Though Mulroney is at present running without a challenger, that situation could change. Other union members can throw their hats in the ring for both officer and board positions by obtaining a minimum number of member signatures on a petition. Members have until July 23 to submit petitions.

Beyond Mulroney, the initial candidate list shows Jeffrey Thompson and Travis Donnelly are both running for vice president,...

Elementary, Ep. 2.06: “An Unnatural Arrangement” delves into rarely-used material
Elementary, Season 2: Episode 6 – “An Unnatural Arrangement”

Written by Cathryn Humphris

Directed by Christine Moore

Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS

Despite the fact that there are four regular cast members included in Elementary‘s title credits, it would be a stretch to say that Gregson and Bell are anything more than supporting characters in this series (and, really, supporting characters that are rarely used in any meaningful way). So, when an episode like “An Unnatural Arrangement” comes along and focuses on Gregson, it is an interesting mix-up by default.

The episode itself stacks up rather well, too. Apart from the weird inclusion of the red herring character who is essentially stalking Gregson, the story that “An Unnatural Arrangement” has to tell is engaging, if cliche. (Note: the reason the red herring is a weird inclusion here is because it is set up to be more important than it ends...

Elementary season 2 episode 6 review: An Unnatural Arrangement
Review Frances Roberts 1 Nov 2013 - 15:37

Elementary’s second season goes from one triumph to another. Here’s Frances’ review of An Unnatural Arrangement…

This review contains spoilers.

2.6 An Unnatural Arrangement

It’s the sweet, considerate moments from the real curmudgeons that really get to you isn’t it? Ron Swanson sticking up for Leslie on Parks and Recreation, Marty Crane kissing his boys goodbye in Frasier and now, Sherlock Holmes offering Watson his bruised ego in a trunk, a “smallest gesture” to acknowledge her as his equal in deduction.

Since Watson went from Holmes’ sober companion to apprentice and now, partner, Elementary has gone from strength to strength. No longer reduced to following Sherlock around, exasperated, Watson is now a bonafide part of the show’s casework rather than a contrivance at the crime scene.

A side-effect of Watson honing her deductive talents has been Holmes honing his relationship skills,...

‘Hurt Locker,’ ‘Up in the Air’ Win at WGAs
The Writers Guild of America honored The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air at their ceremony on Saturday night, firmly establishing the films as front-runners in their respective Oscar categories.

Mark Boal certainly deserves the accolades after embedding himself with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team in Baghdad in 2004 and turning his journalist findings into a dramatic original screenplay. In his speech Boal thanked director Kathryn Bigelow for supporting “an unpopular story about an unpopular war that has now lasted twice as long as WWII with no end in sight.”

Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner picked up the prize for their adaptation of Walter Kirn’s novel, and Mark Monroe won for the moving documentary The Cove.

The WGA Awards are a somewhat reliable indicator of the Academy Awards. ”Original Screenplay” has matched 10 out of the last 15 years, and “Adapted” has lined up 11 of 15, including Milk and Slumdog Millionaire last year.

Writers Guild Nominations Announced
As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.

This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.

We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Writers Guild of America Announces TV Nominations
It’s mid-December and that can only mean one thing: awards season. Today, the WGA announced their TV nominations (feature nominations will be announced Jan. 11th) and it’s the usual suspects for the most part with a couple of surprises. Mad Men, 30 Rock, The Office, and newcomer Modern Family earned 3 nominations each. Meanwhile, popular fan favorite Glee received two. There are a lot of categories and nominees so I’m just going to mention the two big awards before the jump.

The nominees for Best Drama Series are: Breaking Bad, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Lost, and Mad Men. The nominees for Best Comedy Series are: 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Glee, Modern Family, and The Office.

The WGA will announce the winners on Feb. 20th. Hit the jump to see the full list of nominees.

Mad Men (2007)
'Mad Men,' '30 Rock' lead WGA noms
Mad Men (2007)
Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.

AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.

ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.

While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.

The biggest surprise among the series nominees was HBO's low-key baseball comedy "Eastbound & Down,...

Freudian Slip: Confronting Hard Truths on "Mad Men"
"And who are you supposed to be?" Rarely ever has a question been asked that has carried more weight than that one. On this week's stunning episode of Mad Men ("The Gypsy and The Hobo"), written by Marti Noxon & Cathryn Humphris and Matthew Weiner and directed by Jennifer Getzinger, the truth about Don's secret past finally comes tumbling out as he was forced to confess his true identity to Betty. It was only a matter of time before Matt Weiner decided that Betty ought to know just who she has been married to all of these years. After nearly three seasons, Don has managed to pull the wool over Betty's eyes about his affairs, his indiscretions both romantic and professional, and about his past. But Freud once said that there is no such thing as a mistake. Did Don want to be found out? Is that why, as Betty surmises,...

Everything Fades: Love Among the Ruins on "Mad Men"
Times, they are a changing. Bob Dylan may not have wrote the lyrics to his hit song until 1964, but the words are especially apt for the goings-on at Sterling Cooper this week on Mad Men. Just a few quick words about this week's remarkable installment of Mad Men ("Love Among the Ruins"), written by Cathryn Humphris and Matthew Weiner and directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, which I thought was absolutely beautiful in its elegance and pathos. I knew that the matter of Betty's stroke-afflicted father Gene (Ryan Cutrona) would have to come back into play, likely this season but I never expected things to take such a dramatic turn, with Don confronting Betty's manipulative brother William (Eric Ladin) and forcing his hand: Gene would be installed into the Draper household, William would support him financially, and Gene's house would remain untouched. That Gene would now seem to have become a permanent fixture at the Drapers',...

Sneak Peek of 'Supernatural' 4.04: Metamorphosis
Giving fans a chance to get a taste of next "Supernatural" episode, The CW have released a promo video for episode 4.04. The snippet gives out glimpses of the upcoming episode of the horror thriller series, pointing out questions whether Sam and Dean are hunting an innocent man or destroying a monster when they meet Jack Montgomery.

Basically a kind family man, Montgomery doesn't realize that he is turning into a Rugaru, a creature that starts as a human but progressively changes into cannibal and eats another person. While Sam believes he can help Montgomery to come to his senses and control his urges, Dean thinks that the best thing to do is to kill him once and for all.

Starring Jared Padalekci and Jensen Ackles as the two paranormal brothers and guest-starring Dameon Clark as Montgomery, the episode is called "Metamorphosis". Directed by Kim Manners using the script penned by Cathryn Humphris,...
