Goffredo Unger in Blood and Black Lace (1964)

News

Goffredo Unger

Violent City
Image
Director Sergio Sollima sets the template for twenty years of violent action cinema for Rough Tough Charles Bronson. Precise stunt scenes and clever direction are at the service of a script that can’t produce a convincing line of dialogue. It’s a mishmosh of sex, bullets and car chases. Bronson is betrayed by his love for Jill Ireland, and Telly Savalas is shoehorned in as a (surprise!) nasty gangster. Much of it does play like gangbusters — the opening and closing especially — and the dynamic title instrumental is one of maestro Ennio Morricone’s best.

Starz Gives "Black Sails" A Third Season
We are still months away from the premiere of the second season of the Starz network's pirate action drama "Black Sails". Yet the network is happy enough with the show they've already renewed it for a third season to air in early 2016.

This isn't unprecedented. Starz renewed the series for a second season a full five months before the show premiered its first. Even so, this is a big vote of confidence from the network which has previously struggled to get dramas that go beyond two seasons. 'Sails' marks only the third to do so on the network after "Spartacus" and "Da Vinci's Demons".

The series, a rather adult prequel to "Treasure Island," stars Toby Stephens as Captain James Flint and Luke Arnold as a young John Silver. The first season averaged a solid 5.3 million total viewers per episode in the United States, and the show has also been a big hit internationally.

Absurd (1981) review

Absurd” (1981)

Directed By: Joe D'Amato (As Peter Newman)

Written By: George Eastman

Starring: George Eastman (Mikos), Annie Belle (Emily), Charles Borromel (Sergeant Engleman), Katya Berger (Katia Bennett), Kasimir (Willy Bennett), Hanja Kochansky (Carol), Ian Danby (Ian Bennett), Ted Rusoff (Dr. Kramer), Edmund Purdom (Father), Cindy Leadbetter (Peggy), Lucia Ramirez (Angela), Michele Soavi (Biker), Martin Sorrentino (Deputy), Goffredo Unger (Machine Shop Owner)

“Absurd” is definitely absurd. This movie is truly grotesque at times. Joe D’Amato’s movies do not shy away from extremely gory moments. This Italian film is listed among the 39 prosecuted films listed on the British “video nasty” list that were banned entirely for graphic content. This film is under various names. In America, Wizard Video released a VHS big box with a new label called “Monster Hunter.” In some countries it was tacked on to the “Zombi” label as “Zombi 6: Monster Hunter.

Black Sails, Ep. 1.01: “I.” – A pirate life for thee
Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 1 – “I.”

Written by Jonathan E. Steinberg & Robert Levine

Directed by Neil Marshall

Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz

Drifting into the largely unexplored waters of television shows based on pirates, Starz has set its swashbuckling seafarer, Black Sails, upon us to fill that deep void Pirates of the Caribbean left in the hearts of every person ever. As we’ve seen with certain zombie series, transitioning between film and television can be a rough process for genres. How does one make a pirate narrative fit into an arc that could potentially span several years? What about the pirate world is worth immersing viewers in it for that long? These are questions that Black Sails has to deal with and tries to address in its pilot. And while “I.” doesn’t have the flare or budget of a proper ships and swords adventure film or a...

Toby Stephens in Black Sails (2014)
Pirates and artists abound in new 'Black Sails' and 'Da Vinci's Demons' trailers
Toby Stephens in Black Sails (2014)
Starz sailed into this year's New York Comic-Con with brand new trailers for two original series, namely the highly-anticipated "Black Sails," and the returning series "Da Vinci’s Demons." "Black Sails," an original series executive produced by "Transformers" and "Bad Boys" director Michael Bay, is a pirate drama which takes place twenty years before the events in Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic book "Treasure Island." The first season will run for eight episodes and centers on pirate Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his crew of pillagers, who take on a new crew member named John Silver as they fight for the survival of the criminal-friendly New...

'Da Vinci's Demons' and 'Black Sails': Starz teases its 2014 series at New York Comic-Con
The settings of Starz's series "Black Sails" and "Da Vinci's Demons" are separated by an ocean and a few hundred years in time, but they are both very much in keeping with the Starz brand of highly charged period dramas.

The cable channel released trailers for Season 2 of "Demons" and the inaugural run of "Black Sails" at New York Comic-Con on Friday. Both are full of men declaiming about destiny and honor, battle scenes and steamy sex.

"Black Sails," which premieres in January, is a prequel to "Treasure Island" focusing on Capt. Flint (Toby Stephens) and a young John Silver (Luke Arnold).

"Da Vinci's Demons" picks up with Leonardo (Tom Riley) working to defend Florence against the machinations of Rome while searching far and wide for the Book of Leaves and his own history. It's set to return in the spring.

Black Sails: Classic Pirate Imagery Works for this Starz Series
Starz has proved itself to be a champion of period dramas during its push into original programming. From Camelot to Magic City, Spartacus to Da Vinci’s Demons, Starz has never shied away from delving deep into the histories of our world to find gripping stories to tell. The latest series to travel back in time and explore a different era is Black Sails, from executive producer Michael Bay. We’re still more than half a year away from the series’ premiere, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start getting excited now. To start things off, Starz has put up a few teases for us in the form of some key art and a couple of videos.

The key art for Black Sails, which THR reports is premiering in January 2014, evokes the classic imagery of the skull and crossbones, the universal symbol for pirates, only this image uses...

Starz Announces January 2014 Premiere for Pirate Drama Black Sails; First Poster Released
Starz has announced a premiere date and unveiled the first poster for the Michael Bay-produced pirate drama series Black Sails. The show takes place 20 years before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island and centers on Captain Flint (the deceased pirate who literally put the treasure in Treasure Island) and a young Long John Silver as they fight for the defense of notorious criminal haven New Providence Island. The series has been slated for a January 2014 premiere, and it should make for a nice pairing with the network’s period-centric Da Vinci’s Demons, which premiered to successful ratings earlier this year and has already been renewed for a second season. Hit the jump to check out the first poster and two teaser videos for Black Sails, and click here to watch the debut trailer. The series stars Toby Stephens, Luke Arnold, Zach McGowan, Toby Schmitz,...

'Black Sails' trailer: Michael Bay's pirate series headed to Starz
Starz has unveiled the first look at "Treasure Island"-inspired action series "Black Sails" from executive producer Michael Bay, and it's exactly what you'd expect from a Starz/Bay collaboration.

Set to premiere in 2014, the eight-episode series is the latest in Starz's brand of racy historical adventures including the recently concluded "Spartacus" and the recently launched "Da Vinci's Demons."

Set twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic "Treasure Island," the series centers on brilliant and feared pirate Captain Flint (Toby Stephens, who played the villain in "Die Another Day"), who accepts fast talking young man John Silver (Australian TV veteran Luke Arnold) onto his crew.

"Black Sails" was created by showrunner and executive producer Jon Steinberg (the of creator "Jericho" and "Human Target") and co-executive producer Robert Levine ("Touch").

The series is currently filming in Cape Town, South Africa, and also stars Zach McGowan ("Shameless"), Hannah New ("Maleficent...

Watch: A First-Look Trailer for Starz's Pirate Series 'Black Sails' Features Sea Battles and Ladies Smooching
Toby Stephens in Black Sails (2014)
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for Starz. The premium cable channel had a strong launch of historical fantasy "Da Vinci's Demons," created by "Man of Steel" writer David S. Goyer, last week, and today has unveiled the first trailer for 2014 series "Black Sails," an eight-episode swashbuckler that takes place 20 years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic "Treasure Island." The pirate drama comes from executive producer Michael Bay, and is the blockbuster king's first real venture into television. "The Descent" filmmaker Neil Marshall, who attracted a lot of praise for helming the battle-at-sea "Blackwater" episode of "Game of Thrones" last year, directed the "Black Sails" pilot. Toby Stephens ("Die Another Day") plays pirate Captain Flint in the series, while Luke Arnold plays a fast-talking newcomer to the crew who goes by the name of John Silver. Because this is a cable series, the trailer features some apparently requisite girl-on-girl make-outs in addition to.

Glen Keane Talks Tangled
Executive producer and supervising animator Glen Keane talks Tangled

Tangled will hit the shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on March 29, which is a landmark release because Tangled is the Walt Disney Pictures' 50th animated movie. One of the driving forces behind this new spin on the Rapunzel tale is Glen Keane, who served as both the supervising animator and executive producer. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment recently held a virtual roundtable junket with Glen Keane, to discuss his experiences working on Tangled. Here's what he had to say below.

How did you reach the amazing "organic quality" in terms of the character animation.? Did you have any special tools/techniques to improve that effect, or is it in the end just the hard work of the artists?

Glen Keane: For me it was very important to find what I call "bridge people." These are people who understand computer and hand drawn animation.

Roundtable Interview with the Disney Animator Glen Keane
Like the roundtable Q & A posted earlier with the directors of Disney’s 50th animated film, Tangled, we were given another great opportunity to talk to someone involved with the film. This time around it’s with legendary Disney animator Glen Keane, who has worked on such classics as The Little Mermaid, The Rescuers, The Fox and the Hound, Oliver & Company, Beauty & the Beast, and Aladdin.

The Q&A was pretty insightful into the animation process, enjoy! (questions in bold, answers in italicize)

Was it strange — after being a pencil & notebook guy for all those years — to suddenly be drawing on a tablet?

Glen Keane / : The syntec tablet at first was very slippery with the stylus pen on glass and it took a couple of weeks to get used to that but I quickly found that there were benefits to it. I could animate very quickly moving from one...
