Studio Ghibli Releases Its 2025 Anime Artwork Calendars for Preorder

Studio Ghibli Re-Releases Its Adorable Totoro Soot Sprite Bookend Colectible

Studio Ghibli's 1988 fantasy classic, My Neighbor Totoro, introduced audiences to the "soot sprites" -- sentient balls of dust and soot that enjoy sheltering in attics and chimneys. Recently, the studio's official shop reintroduced a popular product that pays tribute to these adorable creatures.

Ghibli's "Makkuro Kurosuke Come Out" bookend has officially returned to Donguri Sora's digital catalog. Playing off the idea of soot spirits "hiding in the gaps between books," this stand features the famous spirits clustered together on a thinly bound volume, each one looking in a different direction. Notably, the volume has a textured wood finish that gives the product an antique appearance. Standing roughly 5.5 inches tall, the stand is designed to help avid readers keep their home libraries well organized while also adding a touch of Ghibli-style magic to their book collections. Including tax, the current retail price is 6,600 yen (US$43.03), with the sales period slated to begin on Aug.

Studio Ghibli Couples Who'd Make It in Real Life
Image
Studio Ghibli has some of the most healthy and sweetest relationships in anime. Ghibli movies have couples in nearly every stage of life and courtship. Some couples meet each other and fall in love for the first time, and others have been married for years and are raising a family.

Anime couples don't have to be convincing to be entertaining. Many of the most popular romances are completely unrealistic, but Studio Ghibli approaches romance a bit differently. Even if the stories take place in fantasy worlds surrounded by magic, whimsy, and coincidence, many Ghibli couples still feel like relationships that would make it in real life.

Mei and Satsuki travel to the countryside for a difficult reason -- they want to be closer to their mother as she's ill in the hospital.

Even though there are difficult, even sad, parts in My Neighbor Totoro, there are plenty of warm and beautiful moments. Studio Ghibli: Ranking the Best Quotes

Studio Ghibli produces a vast array of tale types, from faithful historicals to high fantasy. Each story and character has something to say about the world and the human condition. There are some common themes throughout most of the stories, like lessons about what makes a good life, and the uselessness of violence and exploitative greed.

Hayao Miyazaki and the other Ghibli founders and writers bake the themes so deeply into the stories. Even the simplest lines have deep meaning. The dialogue and character musings aren't all heavy philosophical ideas, either; there are plenty of iconic, lighthearted moments and lines.

Face It, You’ll Never Get To Play Nintendo’s RPG Holy Grail
Image
Mother 3 has gained a cult following outside of Japan, but it has never been officially released in the US. Series creator Shigesato Itoi has stated that he is no longer interested in bringing Mother 3 to the US, and that Nintendo may have previously turned down offers from fans to help create a translation. The chance for an official English release of Mother 3 seems to have passed, as Nintendo has missed its window of opportunity and the game remains niche in the US market.

At this point, it looks like Mother 3 will never come out in the US. First released for the Game Boy Advance as a Japanese exclusive in 2006, the third game in the Mother series has since gained a worldwide cult following. It seems like a game perfectly suited for the US video game market: it draws heavily from the American cowboy mythos, and has a universal, if not easily translated,...

Why Nintendo Abandoned the Game Boy Name
Lexi Johnson and Audrey Grace Marshall in The Girl Who Got Away (2021)
For years, the Nintendo Game Boy dominated the handheld gaming market en route to arguably becoming synonymous with the very idea of handheld gaming. So why did Nintendo stop using the Game Boy name almost 16 years ago?

To be honest, the answer to that question is complicated and open to a fair bit of speculation. While this is a topic that Nintendo has talked around over the years, there are not a lot of high-level Nintendo executives who have directly addressed that question in a way that eliminates all possible doubt.

Having said that, we do have a pretty good idea why Nintendo suddenly stopped using the Game Boy brand after they spent years establishing it as one of the strongest names in the video game industry.

The explanation dates back to the origins of the Game Boy name which are, appropriately enough, also somewhat mysterious. It’s been said...

How Earthbound Was Saved by Former Nintendo President Satoru Iwata
Matthew Byrd Jul 23, 2019

In a new book, Earthbound's creator recalls how Satoru Iwata stepped in and saved the project.

In a new book called Iwata-san, Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi recalls how Satoru Iwata helped save Earthbound from a rough development cycle.

“I think it was in Tokyo at Ape Inc, the studio where we were developing Earthbound, where I first met Iwata,” said Itoi in the book (quote provided by IGN). “We were facing severe difficulties with the development of Earthbound. It had become so difficult that we had to ask Iwata’s help."

This was actually an interesting period in Iwata's life. He was still serving as one of Earthbound developer Hal Laboratory's most gifted programmers, but he was also named CEO of the studio by then-Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi after the developer encountered some financial troubles. In an old quote, Iwata recalls that the...

Nintendo Rejected a Namco Pitch for a Bizarre GameCube EarthBound Game
Matthew Byrd Jul 11, 2019

It looks like Nintendo was interested in a new EarthBound game for GameCube but ultimately rejected this bizarre concept.

Yasuyuki Honne revealed on Twitter that he was once part of a negotiation between Nintendo and Namco that would have seen the later studio develop an EarthBound game for GameCube.

Honne's tweets seemingly came in response to the release of a new book about former Nintendo President Satoru Iwata which was published by a company founded by EarthBound creator, Shigesato Itoi. That occurrence prompted Honne to recall a time when Namco and Nintendo were discussing the possibility of Namco developing a new EarthBound game for the Nintendo GameCube.

The highlight of Honne's concept for this project was a bizarre "felt-like" art style for the game The style is being compared to what we've seen in games like Kirby's Epic Yarn, but the screenshots that Honne shared suggests...

‘Earthbound’ 20 years later: The greatest story ever told in a video game
Earthbound turns 20 years old today, so let’s discuss the cult classic.

****

Earthbound

Developed by Ape / Hal Laboratory

Published by Nintendo

Available on Snes, Wii, Wii U

The Snes is arguably home to some of the best Japanese role-playing games ever made, but even among such revered company, Earthbound (known as Mother 2 in Japan) stands out as a brilliant satire about growing up and our fears of conformity. It’s anarchy versus conformity only conformity doesn’t stand a chance. This often funny, always poignant coming of age tale, deeply embedded in suburban mores, centers around four kids, off to save the planet by collecting melodies while en route to defeating the evil alien force known as Giygas.

Earthbound didn’t reinvent the wheel, but it sure had fun twisting the usual Jrpg tropes. There’s a princess you must rescue, not once, but twice, who’s really just a child prodigy,...

Fan-made EarthBound documentary announced
Robby Benson
A fan-made documentary on EarthBound has been announced by brothers Jeff and Robbie Benson.

The movie - titled EarthBound, USA - was initially intended for a later reveal, but it was unintentionally outed by EarthBound series director Shigesato Itoi.

"Just finished an interview with some American Mother 2 fans who came to see me," Itoi told Twitter followers (via IGN).

"Some of them were in elementary school when they played it but are now married with children, and still have a love for the game to this day. I've had all sorts of projects in my time, but this game is definitely in a league of its own."

EarthBound USA will debut in 2015, "unless Mother 3 is released" in the West.

Originally released in 1994 in Japan, EarthBound finally made its European debut in 2013.

Watch a trailer for EarthBound on the Wii U Virtual Console below:...

Nintendo News: New Handheld Zelda, Mario Party, and Yoshi's Island; Earthbound Coming to Virtual Console; & Lots More!
Yeterday Nintendo hosted another Direct video presentation in which they announced a slew of new games coming to the 3Ds, including another Zelda game set in the Link to the Past universe, and another Yoshi's Island. The Wii U also gets some love in an official release date for Pikmin 3 and the much anticipated announcement that Earthbound is coming to the Virtual Console. Come inside for all the details and information.

Perhaps one of the biggest announcements made yesterday was that a new Zelda game is coming to the 3Ds, which is set in the world of one of the most beloved titles in that entire franchise, A Link to the Past. In fact, the Japanese working title is A Link to the Past 2. While it will retain the top down view, the 3D aspect will play heavily into the gameplay.

The other announcement that made old school fans like me very happy,...

EarthBound to return?
News Aaron Birch Dec 21, 2012

The cult classic, EarthBound, may be returning to our screens…

EarthBound (called Mother in Japan) for the Snes is one of the biggest 16-bit cult classics around, and can fetch crazy prises in auction. It’s a top-down RPG-style adventure that has a bizarre storyline and quirky characters.

Earthbound is actually the sequel to the original Mother, which was only on sale in Japan, and was renamed from Mother 2 on its migration to western shores. Nintendo has had issues re-releasing the game due to licensing problems, but in recent twitter post (translated by Earthbound Central), series creator, Shigesato Itoi commented that a Mother project is making good progress.

“Since it’s now okay to blurt this out, here goes: the “Mother republication” thing I mentioned briefly before is making progress” he said.

“It’s not “(Mother) 4″, though! This has to do with making “Mother” playable. I...
