That's the issue the "John Wick" property ran into when someone got the bright idea to give us "The Continental," a prequel series that explored how Winston (who's played by Ian McShane as an older man in the "John Wick" movies) came into ownership of the titular hotel -- a place where assassins can kick off their shoes and spend a few nights knowing their fellow hit-people are forbidden from killing anyone on the consecrated ground. But while "The Continental" was based on an interesting idea, its execution was anything but successful, with the show earning a pretty harsh response from critics.

Exclusive: WWE superstar Jade Cargill is set to make her acting debut starring opposite Jonathan Majors in True Threat, a Harlem-set action thriller from director Gerard McMurray. The movie is being produced by Alexis Garcia’s CAT5 with Charlamagne Tha God, Basil Iwanyk and Karen Kinney’s new banner Southland Stories.

Just because a movie or show is spun off from a hit doesn’t mean it will stand on its own. This is the case with pretty much everything that is linked to John Wick. We saw it over the weekend with Ballerina – which seriously underperformed at the box office – and we saw it with TV series The Continental. And while John Wick franchise head Chad Stahelski still has faith in Ballerina as a producer, he continues to look down upon The Continental.

Chad Stahelski recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for an extensive interview in which he discussed not only the John Wick movies but the multiple spin-offs that have been out and are in the works. One of the key takeaways that that he says those who actually worked on The Continental just assumed that because it was a John Wick spin-off that it would be a hit.

One really has to hand it to Keanu Reeves. The guy has a knack for starring in zeitgeist-defining action films, with him leading Point Break, Speed and The Matrix. Yet, perhaps his most iconic character, John Wick, is the most unlikely success story of them all. It was seen as an upstart indie flick which came close to going direct-to-video, only for it to become one of the most successful action franchises of all time, and a property that’s unlikely to die anytime soon, even if its own hero’s survival is kind of up in the air right now post John Wick 4. With Keanu Reeves reprising the role in Ballerina, now’s a good time to look back at how this little action franchise that could came to be.

The film stars Ana de Armas, and actually features Reeves reprising his role as the legendary assassin-for-hire. Ballerina takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, and early reviews confirm that it's a solid addition to the franchise. Lionsgate is rapidly expanding the "John Wick" universe. "Ballerina," aka "Ballerina: From the World of John Wick," is in theaters now and serves as the first theatrical spin-off in the very successful action movie franchise. It's not the first spin-off overall, though. That distinction goes to "The Continental," a prequel TV series the producers once called a "genius idea." It turned out to be a big swing and a miss, sort of existing as the oft-ignored stepchild of the universe at present.

The series takes place in the 1970s and centers on a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell), the character played by Ian McShane in the films, and shows us how he came to control The Continental hotel in New York City, a famous safe haven for assassins. Filmmaker Chad Stahelski helmed the four John Wick movies, all of which have been huge critical and commercial successes. The first big screen spin-off, Ballerina, is now playing in theaters, and the movie (which includes a cameo appearance from Keanu Reeves' assassin) is off to a strong start.

In contrast, The Continental: From the World of John Wick TV series on Peacock drew mixed reviews and came and went without leaving much of a lasting impact. It boasted a solid cast, including Mel Gibson and Colin Woodell, but Winston Scott's early years lacked that John Wick magic.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via ActioNewz.com), Stahelski confirmed that neither he nor Reeves were closely involved with the show...and that he wasn't a fan of what The Continental tried to be.

You know a spinoff is in big trouble when the guys who made the franchise aren’t involved. Per Deadline, Tubi acquired the horror thriller for streaming in both the United States and Canada. The film stars Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery, Regan Aliyah, Zoe Colletti, Andrew Liner, Joshua Melnick and Emma Meisel, with Dean Scott Vazquez and Giancarlo Esposito in supporting roles. Don't Feed the Children is written by Paul Bertino and revolves around a group of orphans after the country's adult population is killed by a viral outbreak. During their journey, they uncover a deranged woman with a dangerous secret.

Ana de Armas knows the difference between European and American moviegoers – “good taste.”

During her “Hot Ones” interview Thursday, host Sean Evans asked the “Ballerina” star if she noticed a difference between “what somebody who buys a movie ticket in Madrid is looking for vs. someone in L.A.” The actress said that American cinema has a greater influence in Europe than European cinema does here, but that with European moviegoers, it comes down to taste.

“The influence of American cinema in Europe is stronger I would say,” de Armas began. “Europeans like European films I would say. I think Europeans also – or Spanish people – have a pretty wide spectrum of, they know about cinema, and they have good taste.”

The deal came via 193, the newly-launched sales company from Legendary led by industry vet Patrick Wachsberger, with “Die My Love” one of several major titles it took to the festival as part of its augural Cannes slate. In what the company is claiming as a first, Lionsgate is making tickets for its upcoming John Wick spin-off Ballerina available for purchase in the US through TikTok Shop.

US TikTok users will be able to buy tickets directly within the social media app during a livestream of the film’s world premiere in the UK.The film is set for release on June 6.

Exclusive: Following the premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning this week in Cannes, we can reveal that one of the franchise’s unsung heroes, second unit director and stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood is set to make his directorial debut with action-comedy Mister.

Eastwood is teaming with John Wick producer Thunder Road and Bright White Light on the feature, which the partners are discussing at the Cannes market.

The synopsis reads: “When a man wakes up in a strange house covered in blood, he comes to realize his true identity while fighting off contract killers from his past – including everyone from his exes to his best friend. To get out, he teams up with his estranged daughter who has also ended up in the family business, but they will need to repair their relationship in order to survive.”

The film will see Newton battling for survival against the relentless underwater predator aptly likened to the devil. She won’t be facing the danger alone, though, as the report from Deadline reveals that To All The Boys I've Loved Before breakout star, Lana Condor, has also been cast. Devil's Mouth is a high-profile collaboration between Amazon MGM, and Lionsgate, marking Newton's second Amazon project following the well-received time-loop romance The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, which premiered on Prime Video to critical acclaim.

In what promises to be a thrilling spin on the modern shark horror hit, 47 Meters Down, Devil's Mouth will see Newton and Condo as two college best friends whose vacation trip to Thailand takes a dangerous turn.

Prime Video has ordered two new sports documentaries from Skydance Sports and NFL Films, a six-part series about the New York Jets and a feature-length documentary about Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens, along with a six-part docuseries about female CEOs, featuring and exec produced by Serena Williams. The news was announced during Amazon’s upfront presentation Monday at the Beacon Theater in New York City.

The Home Team: NY Jets is a six-part documentary series that follows six New York Jets players and their partners—including Quinnen & Maranda Williams and Alijah & Jessie Vera-Tucker—throughout the 2024-25 regular season. The series will “provide an authentic peek into the emotional journey these players and their families go on over the course of a 17-week NFL season,” according to Amazon.

Oscar-nominated actor Dev Patel is on his way to solidifying himself as an action hero. After starring in 2024’s Monkey Man, Patel’s next feature, the revenge action-thriller The Peasant, has been acquired by A24 the day before the Cannes market, per Deadline.

The deal was a competitive one that closed in the range of $30 million in a Cannes market low on action movies this year. The Peasant will be up for sale in international markets in the near future. Patel will not only star in The Peasant, but also co-wrote the script for the film with Will Dunn (Ms. Marvel), and will direct the movie.

The 2023 Black List project is being described as having shades of Braveheart and John Wick as well as notes of King Arthur. After being updated by Patel, the script combines medieval knights with feudal India. Set in the 1300s, it centers on a shepherd who embarks on a rage-fueled campaign against a group of mercenary knights who ransacked his community, revealing himself to be more than he seems.
