Before Ballerina, The John Wick Universe Expanded With This TV Show Fans Wish To Forget
Image
It's a dangerous game to try and mix things up with a franchise, even more so when you dare to spin-off a big screen universe into a television show. That's the issue the "John Wick" property ran into when someone got the bright idea to give us "The Continental," a prequel series that explored how Winston (who's played by Ian McShane as an older man in the "John Wick" movies) came into ownership of the titular hotel -- a place where assassins can kick off their shoes and spend a few nights knowing their fellow hit-people are forbidden from killing anyone on the consecrated ground. But while "The Continental" was based on an interesting idea, its execution was anything but successful, with the show earning a pretty harsh response from critics.

/FIlm's own Jeremy Mathai called "The Continental" a "lifeless, joyless, and ultimately pointless return to the Wick-verse" in his review,...

‘Relay’ Trailer: Riz Ahmed Is an Anonymous Fixer in David Mackenzie’s Acclaimed Action-Thriller Indie
Image
Riz Ahmed is cleaning up corporate messes, one corrupt client at a time, for David Mackenzie‘s “Relay.” The film, which debuted at TIFF 2024 and was later acquired by Bleecker Street, stars “The Night Of” alum as an anonymous “fixer” who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corporations and individuals threatening to expose them. However, after one client’s case proves to be even more layered than usual, things go sideways.

The official synopsis reads: “A nameless character, he keeps his identity a secret by using a message relay service called Relay, which is usually used by people with a hearing or speech disability to make and receive telephone calls via text. Yet when a message arrives from a potential client (Lily James) who needs his protection just to stay alive, Ahmed’s character abandons his own ironclad rules of communication.” Sam Worthington, Willa Fitzgerald, Matthew Maher, Helen Eigenberg, Pun Bandhu,...

John Wick 4: Keanu Reeves Pushed For A Final Goodbye, Called Shoot Emotionally & Physically Exhausting
Image
John Wick 4 Almost Had A Very Different Ending ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Keanu Reeves had one request after wrapping up John Wick: Chapter 4, let John die. The actor, who had carried the franchise through four relentless installments, was physically and emotionally worn down. Producer Basil Iwanyk recently revealed to Collider that Reeves pushed for a final end, saying, “He was like, ‘I wanna be definitively killed at the end of this movie.’” After years of training, stunt work, and long shoots, the toll was real.

How John Wick 4 Became Keanu Reeves’ Breaking Point and Quiet Goodbye?

Reeves didn’t just act like a man at the end of his rope. He felt it. Iwanyk shared that every film left Reeves drained, calling the process “exhausting” and saying it “destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally.” By the end of each movie, Reeves reportedly told the team he couldn’t go through it again.

New Details On James Bond 26's Director Deal Revealed, Includes One Condition That Stopped Nolan Making It
Image
A new report for Bond 26 reveals some details about the directing deal, and it may explain why Christopher Nolan wasn't selected. After a four-year-long hiatus since No Time to Die, a new era of the Bond franchise, especially under Amazon, has found its director in Denis Villeneuve.

Before the announcement, many directors were considered favorites, including Nolan. The Oscar-winning director has been a notable choice for a while, although the likelihood seemed thin.

Now, Puck has broken down new details about Villeneuve's contrast, indicating limitations on his involvement with the Bond franchise. The director won't get the final cut and won't be considered a producer for subsequent Bond movies and TV series. He is also only signed on for one movie, but that could change if the installment is successful.

Despite being the first film in what is expected to be a large Bond franchise, Villeneuve's Bond movie...

True Threat: Jade Cargill of the WWE to make film acting debut in Jonathan Majors action thriller
Image
A few months ago, it was announced that Creed III, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Magazine Dreams actor Jonathan Majors had signed on to star in the action thriller True Threat, directed by Gerard McMurray, whose previous credits include The First Purge, Something Like a Business, and The Formula. Now, Deadline has learned that WWE superstar Jade Cargill will be making her film acting debut opposite Majors in the film. Production is expected to begin sometime this fall.

Scripted by McMurray and Hodge K. Johnson, True Threat follows Special Forces operative Vernon Threat (Majors), who returns home seeking justice after his teenage son is murdered by Harlem’s Apollo Kids gang. Threat infiltrates The Carter, a 20-story project building controlled by the gang, and fights his way floor by floor and boss by boss toward a confrontation with its leader and his former mentor, Shallow. Riz Ahmed is carving out a niche in the action-thriller space. After leading “The Night Of” series, the Oscar-nominated actor (he won for his short film “The Long Goodbye”) is expanding his action chops with David Mackenzie’s “Relay.” The critical darling film debuted at TIFF 2024 and was later acquired by Bleecker Street.

Controversial John Wick TV Spin-Off Finds Renewed Streaming Success Thanks To ‘Ballerina’
Image
A couple of years ago, Lionsgate found itself in a pickle. The studio's crown jewel franchise, John Wick, was seemingly at a dead end, with the protagonist having been killed off in the fourth film, John Wick: Chapter 4. By that time, the franchise had grossed over $1 billion at the global box office. Before the studio officially announced that the series would be back with a fifth installment, it put together a streaming show in order to keep the franchise ticking. The show, The Continental: From the World of John Wick, is experiencing a spike in interest on Prime Video, probably thanks to the release of last week's From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, the franchise's first theatrical spin-off.

According to FlixPatrol, The Continental was the eighth-biggest show on Prime Video on June 11, with 97 points. The three-episode series has accumulated a total of 444 points so far this year. Led by Colin Woodell,...

John Wick 5 Edges Forward as Stahelski Hunts for a Story Worth Killing For
John Wick
Lionsgate used its CinemaCon 2025 presentation to confirm that a fifth John Wick film is now in early development, with Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves attached. Yet the director admits the plot remains unresolved, saying the team is still asking, “Is it going to be satisfying?” before committing to cameras. Speaking four days ago, Stahelski explained, “We’re still working on it. It’s all about time for us”.

The dilemma stems from Chapter 4’s ambiguous finale. Stahelski told interviewers he and screenwriter Mike Finch “haven’t quite got it all down,” though early drafts explore influences from classic Chinese and Middle-Eastern cinema. A separate analysis argues that an unused alternate ending to Chapter 4 may provide the needed narrative bridge for a sequel.

Reeves has signalled enthusiasm tempered by age, joking that his “heart” wants another outing but his knees are less certain after a decade of stunt-heavy shoots. Long-time producer...

Chad Stahelski blows up John Wick spin-off The Continental: ‘They thought they had the magic sauce’
Keanu Reeves in John Wick (2014)
Just because a movie or show is spun off from a hit doesn’t mean it will stand on its own. This is the case with pretty much everything that is linked to John Wick. We saw it over the weekend with Ballerina – which seriously underperformed at the box office – and we saw it with TV series The Continental. And while John Wick franchise head Chad Stahelski still has faith in Ballerina as a producer, he continues to look down upon The Continental.

Chad Stahelski recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter for an extensive interview in which he discussed not only the John Wick movies but the multiple spin-offs that have been out and are in the works. One of the key takeaways that that he says those who actually worked on The Continental just assumed that because it was a John Wick spin-off that it would be a hit.

John Wick: How a movie that almost went direct-to-dvd became iconic
Image
One really has to hand it to Keanu Reeves. The guy has a knack for starring in zeitgeist-defining action films, with him leading Point Break, Speed and The Matrix. Yet, perhaps his most iconic character, John Wick, is the most unlikely success story of them all. It was seen as an upstart indie flick which came close to going direct-to-video, only for it to become one of the most successful action franchises of all time, and a property that’s unlikely to die anytime soon, even if its own hero’s survival is kind of up in the air right now post John Wick 4. With Keanu Reeves reprising the role in Ballerina, now’s a good time to look back at how this little action franchise that could came to be.

Flashback to the fall of 2014. Keanu Reeves, while already a legend, was struggling to reinvent himself as a now middle-aged star.

'John Wick' Director Chad Stahelski Slams TV Spin-Off 'The Continental'
Image
The following article contains spoilers for the John Wick franchise.

Chad Stahelski, the filmmaker behind the visionary action franchise John Wick, has offered his harsh opinion on the TV spin-off released by Peacock, The Continental. The director behind all the John Wick films participated in the TV project as executive producer. However, he still slammed the series, saying that it lacked everything that made the action movies led by Keanu Reeves so memorable.

Stahelski recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about the extremely successful action franchise, which has recently released its latest spin-off, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. The film stars Ana de Armas, and actually features Reeves reprising his role as the legendary assassin-for-hire. Ballerina takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, and early reviews confirm that it's a solid addition to the franchise. Unlike The Continental: From the World of John Wick.

John Wick's Director Knows Exactly What Went Wrong With The Continental TV Series
Image
Lionsgate is rapidly expanding the "John Wick" universe. "Ballerina," aka "Ballerina: From the World of John Wick," is in theaters now and serves as the first theatrical spin-off in the very successful action movie franchise. It's not the first spin-off overall, though. That distinction goes to "The Continental," a prequel TV series the producers once called a "genius idea." It turned out to be a big swing and a miss, sort of existing as the oft-ignored stepchild of the universe at present.

The series takes place in the 1970s and centers on a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodell), the character played by Ian McShane in the films, and shows us how he came to control The Continental hotel in New York City, a famous safe haven for assassins. On paper, it doesn't sound like a bad story to tell. The execution, however, left much to be desired. /Film's Jeremy Mathai called "The Continental" a "lifeless,...

"Our Opinion Was Not Really Noted": John Wick Director Chad Stahelski Slams The Continental Spin-Off
Image
Filmmaker Chad Stahelski helmed the four John Wick movies, all of which have been huge critical and commercial successes. The first big screen spin-off, Ballerina, is now playing in theaters, and the movie (which includes a cameo appearance from Keanu Reeves' assassin) is off to a strong start.

In contrast, The Continental: From the World of John Wick TV series on Peacock drew mixed reviews and came and went without leaving much of a lasting impact. It boasted a solid cast, including Mel Gibson and Colin Woodell, but Winston Scott's early years lacked that John Wick magic.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via ActioNewz.com), Stahelski confirmed that neither he nor Reeves were closely involved with the show...and that he wasn't a fan of what The Continental tried to be.

"Keanu and I were — I wouldn’t say sidelined, but our opinion was heard and not really noted.

"Keanu's and My Opinion Were Heard But Not Noted": 'John Wick' Creator Chad Stahelski on Why 'The Continental' Failed
Image
You know a spinoff is in big trouble when the guys who made the franchise aren’t involved. That’s exactly what happened with The Continental, the Peacock series that aimed to expand the John Wick universe by exploring Winston’s rise in the 1970s. While it found an audience and broke some streaming records, John Wick director and co-creator Chad Stahelski says he and Keanu Reeves were mostly sidelined — and it shows.

“Keanu and I were — I wouldn’t say sidelined, but our opinion was heard and not really noted,” Stahelski revealed to THR. “[The studio] tried to convince me they knew what they were doing. A group of individuals thought they had the magic sauce.”

What exactly went wrong? Stahelski didn’t mince words about what makes the Wick universe work — and why a checklist approach just doesn’t cut it.

“If you take out Basil Iwanyk’s producing intuitiveness,...

John Wick Director & Keanu Reeves' Input 'Was Not Heard' for Prequel Series The Continental
Image
John Wick director Chad Stahelski opens up about his less-than-stellar experience on The Continental.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski was asked about why he was less involved in The Continental, the John Wick spinoff series, than he had been with the films. "Keanu [Reeves] and I were — I wouldn’t say sidelined, but our opinion was heard and not really noted," Stahelski replied. "[The studio] tried to convince me they knew what they were doing. A group of individuals thought they had the magic sauce."

"But if you take out Basil Iwanyk’s producing intuitiveness, if you take out Keanu’s way of delivering quirky dialogueand if you take out all the visuals I have in my head… then it’s not the same thing," Stahelski continued. "They thought this was as easy as using anamorphic lenses, do a kooky hotel, put in weird dialogue, and insert crime drama. If you saw our process,...

Ana De Armas Says European Audiences Differ From American Because ‘They Know About Cinema and They Have Good Taste’ | Video

Ana de Armas knows the difference between European and American moviegoers – “good taste.”

During her “Hot Ones” interview Thursday, host Sean Evans asked the “Ballerina” star if she noticed a difference between “what somebody who buys a movie ticket in Madrid is looking for vs. someone in L.A.” The actress said that American cinema has a greater influence in Europe than European cinema does here, but that with European moviegoers, it comes down to taste.

“The influence of American cinema in Europe is stronger I would say,” de Armas began. “Europeans like European films I would say. I think Europeans also – or Spanish people – have a pretty wide spectrum of, they know about cinema, and they have good taste.”

De Armas appeared on the show to promote her upcoming film “Ballerina,” an action-forward spinoff set in the “John Wick” universe. The story takes place concurrent to the events of “John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

Greenland: Migration receives official rating from the MPA
Ric Roman Waugh
Things were seemingly all quiet on the Greenland front. But the sequel to the Gerard Butler disaster film is back on the radar with a little blip. The original Ric Roman Waugh thriller, Greenland, starred Butler and Morena Baccarin and follows a family’s struggle to get to emergency proceedings as they’re selected for shelter from the impending doom of a comet hurling toward our planet. Screenwriter Chris Sparling returned to co-write this entry with Mitchell Lafortune. The plot reads, “The Garrity family must leave the...
