'Avatar' Creator, 70, Shares an Update on Whether He Will Direct Future Movies
Image
As another installment of the global hit sci-fi film series Avatar bows into theaters this December, director James Cameron has reflected on his place in the future of the franchise. He still has two more movies in the Avatar universe to make, and given the significant time it takes to make each movie, there have been concerns that he might not be physically capable of seeing all the films to the end. Cameron turns 71 soon, but that won't slow him down — at least that's the plan. He plans to direct Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. "I mean, there's no reason not to. I’m healthy, I'm good to go," he told Empire when they asked if there was a possibility he could hand over the day-to-day duties of making the remaining films to another director.

Still, the future is unpredictable, and Cameron has thought about it. "I’m not going to rule it out,...

Providing a long-awaited glimpse at Avatar: Fire and Ash's eye-popping visuals, new clans, and stunning new creatures, this sneak peek doesn't reveal too much about the story. Even so, for fans of Pandora, what's shown should be more than enough to convince them to buy a ticket in time for this holiday season.

Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer drops online; James Cameron’s epic saga continues this December
James Cameron
Released in 2009, director James Cameron’s film Avatar became the first movie to officially gross more than $2 billion. Then it took him thirteen years to get a sequel into theatres, so it wasn’t clear if the follow-up was going to be able to replicate that success. But then, sure enough, Avatar: The Way of Water also grossed more than $2 billion, paving the way for not only Avatar 3, or Avatar: Fire and Ash, (which is scheduled to reach theatres on December 19, 2025) but also Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 – which will be released on December 21, 2029 and December 19, 2031, respectively. With the release of the third film now just five months away, a trailer has dropped online and can be seen in the embed above!

Cameron crafted these sequels with a writers room that consisted of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (who worked on The Way of Water and Fire and Ash), Josh Friedman...

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Trailer Blazes with Action, Family Bonds, and Vengeance
Image
James Cameron’s official trailer for the third Avatar film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is all about the visuals and action scenes, with very little dialogue. Jake and Neytiri continue to put family first in a fight to survive, with Jake warning his partner Neytiri not to live in hate. That appears to be easier said than done when everyone’s trying to kill you.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña return to lead the cast as Jake and Neytiri. The third film of the franchise also stars Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, and Kate Winslet. James Cameron directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

Image
James Cameron is diving back into the world of Pandora with Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film in the Avatar series. Set to release on December 19, 2025, this movie picks up where The Way of Water left off and looks like it could be the most visually jaw-dropping chapter yet.

New ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Visuals Tease the Most Breathtaking Chapter Yet
Image
James Cameron is back again with another Avatar film, and this one’s called Avatar: Fire and Ash. It’s the third movie in the Avatar series and a direct follow-up to Avatar: The Way of Water, which came out in 2022.

This new movie is still all about Pandora, the stunning alien world, and once again Cameron is directing, co-writing, co-editing, and producing the film. He worked on the script along with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, as well as Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025, after a long journey filled with delays—nine of them to be exact. The movie was supposed to come out way earlier, but it kept getting pushed back because of the crazy amount of work involved, especially with the technology they needed for filming underwater scenes. They were doing things that had never been done before,...

Trailer for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Reveals New Villains, Fiery Conflict, and a Dark Turn for Pandora
Image
The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash is finally out, and it’s bringing some major heat—literally. The third movie in James Cameron’s sci-fi franchise gives us a glimpse at a much darker side of Pandora, and it’s not looking good for Jake Sully and his family.

The trailer was first shown before The Fantastic Four: First Steps in theaters, but now 20th Century Studios has dropped it online.

This is our first official look at Fire and Ash ahead of its December 19, 2025 release date.

In the trailer, we hear Jake (played by Sam Worthington) pleading with Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), saying, “You can’t live like this baby — in hate!” Tension between the Na’vi and the humans hasn’t cooled down at all, and now we’re seeing even more division among the Na’vi clans themselves. This time, it’s the Ash People who step into the spotlight,...

‘Avatar: Fire And Ash’ First Trailer Unveils The Ash People And More Na’Vi War
Image
After beginning play over the weekend in front of The Fantastic Four: First Steps screenings, 20th Century Studios’ trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has dropped. It’s the first look at the third installment of the franchise, and comes ahead of its planned December 19, 2025 release.

“You can’t live like this baby – in hate!” exclaims Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) to his wife, Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). As we’ve known coming out of the press tour for Avatar: The Way of Water, not all Na’vi clans are nice, and we have known for a while the Ash People were going to be trouble. And the military humans led by Recom Miles Quaritch aren’t letting up. Also shown here, Sully’s children are in peril again, as expressed by Neytiri, and human friend Spider continues to get in entanglements.

‘Avatar: Fire & Ash’ Trailer Officially Released Online: James Cameron Returns With Fiery Stunner
Image
The action-packed first trailer for James Cameron’s next Avatar fantasy epic has been officially released online (below).

Disney has revealed the trailer for Avatar: Fire & Ash following the footage leaking after the teaser was put exclusively in theaters last week in front of Fantastic Four: First Steps.

One raved that the trailer was “some of the most beautiful footage I’ve seen all year [and I was] struck by the real sense of doom and rage — fist fights inside of cosmic volcanoes, heroes terrified, huge aerial battles.” While an entertainment writer wrote, “[The trailer] started out as ‘meh, more of the same’ and ended with ‘yup, another billion to James Cameron.'” And a film critic wrote: “The visuals are (somehow) on another level. There is no doubt in my mind that this Will be the biggest movie of 2025, and ‘epic’ doesn’t feel like it does this trailer justice.”

Avatar: Fire And Ash Gets Two New Empire Magazine Covers Highlighting Oona Chaplin's Villainous Varang
Image
The first teaser trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently playing in theaters before The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It leaked online in HD earlier a couple of weeks ago, but Disney moved quickly to take those down.

In the meantime, we have two new covers from Empire Magazine putting the spotlight on the Ash People/Mangkwan Clan and their leader, the villainous Varang. We've explored Pandora's forests and seas, but this corner of the planet has a far more sinister feel to it.

"Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that," filmmaker James Cameron explained earlier this year. "She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil."

"One thing we wanted to do in this film is not be black-and-white simplistic," he teased. "We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad,...

The seemingly villainous Ash People are also highlighted, with a battle between their leader, Varang, and Neytiri also teased.

Avatar: Fire And Ash New Look Revealed As Stephen Lang Hints At Big Developments For Quaritch And Spider
Image
One of Avatar: The Way of Water's biggest shocks came when we learned that Stephen Lang's Miles Quaritch, resurrected as a "recombinant" Na'vi, was the father of Spider, a human child adopted by Jake Sully and Neytiri.

As the movie progressed, Spider was forced to come to terms with his father being a villain looking to lay waste to Pandora alongside the Rda. Despite being raised by Jake and Neytiri, he did bond with his father and begrudgingly saved his life.

However, that doesn't mean they're about to put their differences aside as father and son in this December's Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Talking to Empire Online, (via SFFGazette.com) Lang says, "They reconnect out of necessity. Their connection is not a solo connection. There are times when everybody comes together on some level. But, when enemies cooperate, you can be sure betrayal is just around the corner.

Avatar: Fire And Ash Stars Reveal New Details About Where We Find Lo'ak, Tuk, And Spider In Threequel
Image
In Avatar: The Way of Water, we met Jake Sully and Neytiri's children for the first time. However, tragedy struck when their oldest child, Neteyam, was killed while battling the Rda.

That will put the franchise's leads on a revenge mission, and filmmaker James Cameron has previously suggested their quest is what eventually brings Neytiri to Earth (a plot development we expect to see play out in the planned fourth instalment). What of the remaining kids, though?

Britain Dalton, who plays Lo'ak, recently spoke to Empire (via SFFGazette.com) and revealed where we find his middle sibling when Avatar: Fire and Ash begins. "[Lo'ak] was born to be a leader. But he’s never been given the trust," he teased. "When Neteyam dies...that’s no way that he ever imagined being finally able to be seen. He blames himself."

Tuk actor Trinity Bliss added, "I don’t think she’ll ever be the same.

James Cameron will take a break from 'Avatar' to work on an adaptation of 'The Devils'.The 70-year-old filmmaker has confirmed his own production company Lightstorm Entertainment has acquired the rights to author Joe Abercrombie's new novel, and they'll be writing the script together. He said in a statement on Facebook: "I’ve loved Joe’s writing for years, cherishing each new read, throughout the epic cycle of the 'First Law' books, especially 'Best Served Cold' (Love It!), and the 'Age of Madness' trilogy.“But the freshness of the world and the characters in 'The Devils' finally got me off my butt to buy one of his books and partner with him to bring it to the screen."I can’t wait to dig into this as I wind down on 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'. It will be a joyful new challenge for...

Avatar: Fire And Ash First Still Features Guardians Of The Galaxy Star Zoe Saldaña As Neytiri
Image
Avatar: The Way of Water concluded with the death of Jake Sully and Neytiri's firstborn son, Neteyam. Unsurprisingly, that's put them both back on the warpath against the Rda, and the "absolute devastation" will fuel the matriarch's actions heading into Avatar: Fire and Ash.

"That pain is seamlessly followed up on," Zoe Saldaña tells Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com). "And because it doesn’t really have anywhere to go, and doesn’t go away, rage can also come from it. [The Sullys] are going to be tested as a family."

"Not only would everything that’s happening compel her to question the bond she has with her husband," the actress adds, "but also her bond with herself, her people, her land, and the way the Na’vi are. She’s going to question everything."

However, Neytiri will supposedly "meet her match" in Oona Chaplin's Varang, the leader of the Mangkwan Ash Clan.

Avatar: Fire And Ash Concept Art Takes Us Back To Pandora's Oceans; VFX Supervisor Teases New Tulkun
Image
Avatar was a box office hit in 2009, and 13 years later, 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water was also a huge hit, grossing over $2.3 billion at the worldwide box office. Now, all eyes are on Avatar: Fire and Ash to do the same this December.

The sequel introduced us to Payakan, a tulkun (space whale), who is now confirmed to return in the next instalment. Talking to Empire (via SFFGazette.com), VFX supervisor and executive producer Richard Baneham said, "He’s turned out to be one of the most popular characters."

"The reaction emboldened us to go forward and play Payakan at the very highest level," he continued, adding that Payakan now has a female friend, Ta'nok, "another outcast" who has a really "great dynamic" with her fellow tulkun.

Then, there are clan leaders, Matriarch and Patriarch. "Matriarch is a very interesting character," Baneham teased. "She’s in full regalia. We...

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ First Footage: James Cameron Introduces a New Clan of Na’vi Villains
Image
Few titles elicit more intrigue than a new “Avatar” movie directed by James Cameron. The massive success of “Avatar: The Way of Water” in 2022 proved that even a 13-year delay between films was not enough to dampen audience enthusiasm for Cameron’s Pandora-set sci-fi saga and the stunning visual effects that accompany each film. And the upcoming third film, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” might be the most important movie on Disney’s 2025 slate as Hollywood attempts to create some new box office magic after a bleak 2024.

Exhibitors received their first look at “Fire and Ash” when the trailer debuted during Disney’s CinemaCon presentation on Thursday, April 3. Cameron, who sent along a video message from New Zealand while finishing the film (he said of the release date: “this sucker’s coming at us like a freight train”), showed a clip in which massive flying whale-like creatures towed soaring aerial ships,...

'Let's Make Him an A—hole': James Cameron Reveals How Avatar 3's Jake Sully Is Partly Based on Him
Image
Avatar: Fire and Ash is the latest chapter in the emotional journey that Jake Sully and his family have navigated throughout the sci-fi film series. Sam Worthington's Sully has become a relatable character throughout the Avatar franchise, with director James Cameron claiming the main protagonist is partially based on his real-life personality.

Speaking with Empire, Cameron stated that the Avatar film series' main characters were created and written using inspiration from his life and the experiences of his co-writers, including Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. According to the Oscar-winning filmmaker, Sully's personality mirrors his, particularly his parenting approach.

"These characters are amalgams of us, our childhoods, our role as parents, the mistakes we made, and probably to some extent continue to make as parents. A lot of self-reflection," he said. "I mean, Jake is a hard-ass motherf**ker. He's very hard on his kids. Well,...

“Let’s Make Him An A**hole”: James Cameron Says Avatar’s Jake Sully Is Partially Based On Him
Image
Avatar director James Cameron reveals that Jake Sully is partially based on himself. Released in 2009, the sci-fi fantasy film remains not just Cameron's most successful film ever, but the highest-grossing movie of all time. Avatar stars Sam Worthington in the lead role of Jake, a paraplegic marine dispatched on a mission to colonize the alien moon of Pandora who becomes torn between following orders and defending the people and culture he comes to love. Worthington returns as Jake to lead the cast of Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), Cameron's hit sequel.

During a recent interview with Empire magazine, Cameron recalls the writing process for the Avatar sequels. The director reveals that the franchise's characters were created and written by drawing from his own life, as well as the lives of his co-writers, Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno. Cameron mentions Jake, specifically, as a character that has...

James Cameron’s Wife ‘Bawled For Four Hours’ After Watching Avatar: Fire And Ash
Image
James Cameron knows how to push emotional buttons. Titanic is, once the iceberg hits, an unabashed weepie. The lava thumbs-up at the end of Terminator 2 will have the hardest hearts melted down to scrap. And Avatar and Avatar 2 are packed with devastating moments, from the destruction of Hometree, to the death – spoiler alert! – of Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son Neteyam in the sequel. But by the sounds of it, the third Avatar movie – the upcoming Fire And Ash – might be the most emotional of the bunch, even when viewed in unfinished form.

Case in point: Cameron’s own wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, saw a version of the film from late last year, and – per her filmmaker husband – was completely overwhelmed with emotion. “My wife watched the whole thing from end to end — she had kept herself away from it and I wasn’t showing her bits and pieces as we went along.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will be longer than Avatar: The Way of Water
The first Avatar was quite long, with a running time of 2 hours and 42 minutes, but Avatar: The Way of Water surpassed it, going on for 3 hours and 12 minutes. Now, Cameron has confirmed that Avatar: Fire and Ash will be even longer.

Speaking with Empire, Cameron said, “In a nutshell, we had too many...

'Too Many Great Ideas': James Cameron Teases Avatar 3 Will Be Even Longer Than The Way of Water
Image
Avatar 3, officially titled as Avatar: Fire and Ash, is just over nine months away from releasing and set to continue the epic tale of Jake Sully and the battle between the Rda and the Na’vi natives of Pandora. The story will continue from where Avatar: The Way of Water left off with the Sully’s deciding to return from the run after the resurrected Colonel Miles Quaritch hunts down the family after Jake and Neytiri killed him in the first film.

The Avatar movies are sci-fi epics of impressive length, impressive to some at least - the theatrical releases of Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water were 2 hours and 42 minutes, and 3 hours and 12 minutes, respectively. Naturally, fans have wondered how long the third outing in James Cameron’s film franchise will be. That’s still unknown, but it's been teased that it's not going to be the shortest...

James Cameron confirms Avatar: Fire and Ash will be longer than The Way of Water
James Cameron's third 'Avatar' movie will be even longer than the second. The 70-year-old filmmaker admitted he had too many "great ideas" packed into 2022's 'Avatar: The Way of Water' - which clocked in at three hours and 12 minutes - but he's gone even bigger with the upcoming 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'.He told Empire magazine: “In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2. The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’“Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.”His co-writer Amanda Silver, who wrote the script with Cameron and Rick Jaffa, stressed the second and third movies are separate films because "the characters needed to breathe".She said: “These movies are a lot more than just propulsive plot and gorgeous spectacle.

James Cameron Reveals ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Will Be Longer Than ‘The Way of Water’
Image
Get ready to sit back and relax for a while when Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters.

Filmmaker James Cameron recently revealed to Empire magazine that the upcoming third installment in his Avatar franchise will actually be longer than 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which ran three hours and 12 minutes long.

“In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2,” Cameron explained. “The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’”

The director added, “Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.”

However, Avatar might not mind the film’s length as the first two films are some of the biggest theatrical releases to date, with 2009’s Avatar holding the spot as the highest-grossing film of all time, while The Way of Water holds the record for third.

James Cameron Says 'Avatar: Fire & Ash' Could Have Longer Runtime Than 'The Way of Water'
Image
In case you're already finding your bladder being tested by long movies, you might want to skip the next big blockbuster by Hollywood auteur James Cameron. The director of films like The Terminator, Titanic and, most recently, the Avatar movies, said that the upcoming sequels are going to be longer than the previous movies in the franchise. But rest assured that it's all for a good reason: The writers just had too many good ideas to include in a regular length movie.

The first movie, 2009's Avatar, had a running time of 162 minutes, while the sequel, 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water, went for a whopping 192 minutes. Recently, Cameron said that the third movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, will have a running time similar to the second. Nevertheless, the director spoke to Empire, and he teased that the upcoming movie would actually be a bit longer than part 2:

James Cameron Teases ‘Avatar 3’ Will Be Even Longer Than ‘The Way Of Water’
Image
The journey is long, and so is the runtime.

James Cameron shared on Friday that the upcoming “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” set to release Dec. 19, 2025, will be even longer than its predecessor 2022’s “The Way Of Water.”

The sequel to Cameron’s first “Avatar” film clocked in at 187 minutes. Comparatively the first film, which hit theaters back in 2009, was 145 minutes. The runtime was hardly Cameron’s concern though, the director explained that originally “Fire and Ash” was not even supposed to happen. In Empire’s latest Path To Pandora dispatch, the acclaimed director and some of the writers talked about the decision to split the second and third installments.

“In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2,” Cameron said of his decision to bisect the films. “The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we were not drilling down enough on character. So I said,...

Avatar: Fire And Ash Writers ‘Split’ The Film From The Way Of Water: ‘We Had Too Many Great Ideas’
Image
Avatar: Fire And Ash almost didn’t exist at all. James Cameron’s original plan was to follow up his 2009 mega-smash Avatar with three sequels, but when he and his writers’ room got into developing the story, there proved just too much juicy material. Hence, as Cameron tells Empire in our latest Path To Pandora dispatch, some of the story planned for Avatar: The Way Of Water got developed as a whole other film.

“In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2,” Cameron says, unpacking the process of the Avatar writers’ room. “The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’” While The Way Of Water was epic in its own right, “movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2”, he teases.

'It's A Gift:' Zoe Saldana Reflects On Her 26 Year Avatar Commitment
Image
Zoe Saldana was in her 20s when she made her debut as Neytiri in 2009's Avatar. The actor recently reflected on her time with the franchise and the 26-year commitment she made to James Cameron's vision.

"I was 28 when I did the first movie and I think, if all goes to plan, I'll be 53 [or] 54 for the very fifth one and last one," she said during an appearance on Deadline's The Actor's Side video series. "It's a gift to be able to revisit a character that has given me so much, to revisit a place that has been so magical. Not just for me, but for so many people in the world. We're talking about communities in the Amazon who were able to see Avatar 1, and they were moved by the stories that Jim was saying and how they felt represented in the story that Jim was conveying. Avatar: Fire And Ash Concept Art Reveals An Unrecognizable Corner Of Pandora With The Ash Village
Image
Love or hate the Avatar movies, it's hard to deny that seeing Pandora on screen has become quite the spectacle. From lush jungles to blue skies and, in 2022's The Way of Water, sweeping oceans, the planet is visually breathtaking.

However, when Avatar: Fire and Ash takes us to the home of the Mangkwan Clan (a.k.a. the Ash Clan), we'll explore the Ash Village, a location that's vastly different to what we've grown used to seeing in these movies.

That's evident from the newly released concept art below and, in an interview with Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com), production designer Dylan Cole explained, "[The Mangkwan] had a natural disaster befall them, and that sort of helped shape their culture. So much of the world of Pandora is rich and vibrant and full of life - this is just the exact opposite."

"They used to live not too dissimilarly to the Omatikaya from Avatar 1," he teased,...

Avatar: Fire and Ash will once again explore previously unseen areas of Pandora. Along with the hostile Ash Clan, the Mangkwans, Jake and Neytiri will meet the mysterious Wind Traders (a.k.a. the Tlalim Clan).

According to Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com), they're a group of Na'vi who "traverse the lush moon on gigantic jellyfish-like creatures," with Wonder Woman star David Thewlis set to play their leader, Peylak.

"They’re upbeat, happy, colourful," Avatar: Fire And Ash costume designer Deborah L. Scott says of the group. "And when they come into our movie, everyone’s excited to see them. It’s like the circus is in town."

"Originally the cloak was a little more rugged, a little more rustic," she continued, sharing a first look at Peylak which you can check out below. "But as all the clans developed, Jim [Cameron] said, 'I just don’t think it’s grand enough.

15 Movies With Better Battles Than The Lord Of The Rings
Image
Longtime fans of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings can attest that while the trilogy is aging, the films remain nearly perfect, especially the battles. The fights between good and evil remain epic from the quintessential Battle for Minas Tirith to the concluding battle at The Black Gate. Regardless of Peter Jackson's ability to direct and organize such massive and legendary battles, other films are notable specifically for their battle scenes.

With no disregard for the Fellowship's dire life-and-death moments, some feature films have bested The Lord of the Rings. There's no denying that the movie trilogy inspired many franchises to craft bolder and wilder battle scenes — some of them even surpass the impact of The Lord of the Rings, including films that predate the trilogy. Such movies range from a clash of swords in Gladiator to sci-fi epics like Avatar, while other movies provide eclectic war scenes like Saving Private Ryan.
