Opening with the well-worn quote “One riot. One ranger.” from which it takes its title, One Ranger the new film from action specialist Jesse V. Johnson quickly segues into a scene of Texas Ranger Alex Tyree tying up his horse before rousting a stereotypically drunken Native American fugitive.

That’s interrupted by a call to deal with a crew of bank robbers in an Atv, who’ve left a trail of dead lawmen in their wake. He manages to kill three of them, but the leader, former Ira operative turned killer for hire Declan McBride, makes it to Mexico.

That’s where British Intelligence, in the form of Agent Jennifer Smith, enters the picture. The Mexican authorities have arrested McBride, but won’t officially hand him over to the US or the UK.

Even minor characters deserve some respect and proper portrayals, too, and George R.R. Martin was right to call out every Hollywood creative who works on adaptations only to ruin them for the fans.

Understandably, some scenes in novels are impossible to translate on television without some creative changes, but completely modifying a character’s arc and death scene is just blatant disrespect to the source material.

Well, this one's a true shocker.

Max has made the shocking decision to cancel Warrior.

The decision comes months after Warrior Season 3 wrapped on the streaming service.

Max rarely releases viewership statistics like many other streaming services, so it's difficult to assess how well the show performed.

The only good news to come from the cancellation is that Netflix has picked up the rights to past episodes of the series.

Deadline first reported the news, revealing that the show is set to hit Netflix in February 2024.

If the show proves to be a success with the service's subscribers, it could lead to additional seasons being produced.

Netflix has picked up many canceled shows in the past, including Cobra Kai, Longmire, and Manifest, so the company could be seen as a decent destination to get fresh episodes.

If the series does secure a reprieve at Netflix, it would mark its third U.

Martial arts drama Warrior has been cancelled by Sky – but there’s an outside chance that Netflix may make more episodes.

Before he became an international kung fu superstar thanks to films like Way Of The Dragon, in which he famously went hand to hand with Chuck Norris in Rome’s Colosseum, and Enter The Dragon (which features an equally iconic climactic battle which takes place in a hall of mirrors), Bruce Lee was an integral part of what made seminal 1960s show The Green Hornet a huge success.

Although his film career soon took off, had things turned out differently Lee would have continued to make an impact on the small screen. He’s generally accepted as being involved in creating the concept for Kung Fu, the drama that eventually starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, the pacifist who ended up in several fights every week.

The revival of Warrior at Max turned out to be short-lived: The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer has canceled the show after its first season as a Max original and third overall.

That said, the series — based on writings by Bruce Lee and set in 19th century San Francisco — will potentially get in front of more viewers beginning in February 2024 as all three seasons will stream on Netflix. Warrior will continue to be available on Max as well, similar to other non-exclusive streaming licensing deals Wbd has made with Netflix for HBO shows like Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers and Ballers.

Warrior won’t be returning for a fourth season on Max.

However, the existing three seasons of the martial arts crime drama are set to find additional audiences as Netflix has picked up the series’ library in a co-exclusive deal with Max in Warner Bros. Discovery streamer’s markets.

Warrior is expected to debut on Netflix in February 2024. If it does well, Netflix could presumably order a new season of the drama based on an original concept and treatment by Bruce Lee, sources tell Deadline exclusively.

This latest move sets Warrior in its third home in as many years. Once again, the holidays – or is it holidaze? – are upon us, bringing with it a flurry of Christmas movies.

You have your endless parade of cartoons, specials, Christmas-themed episodes of your favorite TV shows, bad holiday comedies (1996’s Jingle All the Way and 2007’s Fred Claus come to mind), and Christmas-set horror movies (1984’s Gremlins). Then there’s the cheesy yet feel-good Lifetime and Hallmark films. And how can we forget the 24-hour marathon of 1983’s A Christmas Story (celebrating its 40th anniversary this year), beginning on Christmas Eve and ending on Christmas Day?

If those don’t do it for you, maybe these lists of Christmas movies will.

Classic Christmas Movies

You can’t go wrong with these classics, which can lighten the hearts of even the most ardent cynics.

White Christmas is a beloved holiday film with iconic quotes, including Bob's comment about being stuck with a "weirdsmobile for life." The importance of friendship is highlighted in the film, as shown by Bob and Phil's dedication to General Waverly, despite his comment that they "weren't any good as privates." The comedic duo of Bob and Phil provides laughs throughout the movie, with Bob's dry but loving comments leaving an impression.

The 1954 holiday classic White Christmas is one of the most recognizable movies of its genre, and the film contains several iconic quotes. White Christmas is a follow-up to the black-and-white Christmas movie classic Holiday Inn, featuring an incredible soundtrack from Irving Berlin. Starring the likes of Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Vera-Ellen, and Rosemary Clooney, White Christmas saw success for its wholesome family atmosphere. It's still one of the most notable holiday-themed films to date.

What made the original television run of "The Twilight Zone" (from 1959-1964) so special was the way individual episodes could function on multiple levels. Since the show was an anthology, and every episode had its own premise, it was free to explore whatever it wanted to. The first level of a given episode was the superficially exciting one that put you in the shoes of a protagonist faced with an unnerving science-fiction premise. But the other level went deeper, studying human nature at extremes. Host and show creator Rod Serling would show up to deliver the moral, but the twists, unhappy endings, and central ironies continue to be surprising and disturbing.

The series typically explored prejudice in the form of racism or anti-intellectualism, or in one of its most famous episodes, the idea of beauty standards. But it also explored nostalgia, whether for a bygone way of life or for the one that got away.

Thomas Jane slings guns and a Southern drawl while chasing terrorists across the pond in a new action movie. One Ranger has a rugged Texas lawman, always sporting his cowboy hat and brass belt buckle, showing the hapless Brits how to catch baddies on their own soil. An action-packed opening in the desert leads nowhere as the film never comes close to reaching that high bar again. A scattershot plot with poorly written characters suffers from gaping logic holes. The lack of cohesiveness compounds as a secondary villain takes center stage for no reason whatsoever.

In the Laredo flats, Texas Ranger Alex Tyree (Jane) busts a sleeping Tom (Gregory Zarogaza). He gives the horse and rifle thief two options — he can come peacefully in handcuffs or as a carcass. Alex's radio squawks an alert. Bank robbers have killed three officers and are heading to the Mexican border.

As the saying goes, you can take the man out of Texas … but apparently he’ll drag an arsenal of Lone Star State clichés wherever he goes, at least in “One Ranger.” Stuntman turned writer-director Jesse V. Johnson’s latest action programmer has Thomas Jane as a Texas Ranger so ornery-tough he makes even Chuck Norris look too nice, called upon to chase terrorists overseas for no obvious reason at all. Well, perhaps the reason is simply to indulge some viewers’ notion that Texamurricans just naturally shoot ’n’ smack them foreign evildoers better. Those not buying such logic will find this mediocre effort ridiculous as well as uninspired. Lionsgate is releasing the feature to 11 U.S. theaters as well as digital and on-demand platforms on May 5.

Snow is beginning to fall, and lights have gone up all over the place to celebrate the holiday season. Families are watching their favorite old movies like 1954's "White Christmas" to get in the mood. Unfortunately, if you want the full, official soundtrack to that particular film, you are out of luck. Even Santa can't fix record contract issues. He really should leave coal in a few record executives' stockings.

If you've never seen Michal Curtiz's "White Christmas," it's the story of Bob (Bing Crosby) and Phil (Danny Kaye), old WWII war buddies who have gone into show business and had great success. They meet sisters Judy (Vera-Ellen) and Betty (Rosemary Clooney), a performing duo dealing with some hard times. They all end up in Vermont at a failing resort owned by the guys' disgraced Major General (Dean Jagger), putting on a show to save the place and restore some holiday cheer.

Maren Morris has entered the chat. The 32-year-old country singer likes to make her opinions known and following the news of Candace Cameron Bure‘s controversial comments about “traditional marriage,” Morris has chimed in.

In a post from Matt Bernstein slamming Bure, which reads, “You went decades without ever having to see an LGBTQ character on screen. Now, we’re in 1 out of 5 movies. Sorry if this disturbs you. Sending thoughts and prayers,” Morris commented, “Make DJ Gay Again.”

Fans of the martial arts drama Warrior are getting their patience rewarded: Production on Season 3 has begun at last, as confirmed by HBO Max on Wednesday.

The update comes 15 months after Warrior was renewed for Season 3, and 19 months (!) since its sophomore finale aired. (The show previously aired its first two seasons on Cinemax, but relocated to HBO Max after Cinemax ceased production on original programming.)

“Warrior” Season 3 is enlisting new members. The action-packed HBO Max original series will see Mark Dacascos (best known for portraying the Chairman on “Iron Chef”) and Chelsea Muirhead join the cast.

Dacascos will portray Kong Pak, the former leader of a newly absorbed, Long Zii-affiliated tong and Li Yong’s (Joe Taslim) old friend and mentor. Muirhead will play Yan Mi, the unassuming but clever daughter of a local print shop maker.

When Bruce Lee died in July 1973, he left behind a true legacy, having changed the way people perceive martial arts and Asian people in movies in general. Lee also had a very specific understanding of what he wanted to achieve as an artist, which was not only to entertain, but also to teach his audience about martial arts, its variety and expressions. Although the Bruce Lee-inspired Cinemax series Warrior is fiction, it is loosely based on historical events of San Francisco in the 1870s. Just as Nellie Davenport (Miranda Raison) is based upon on a remarkable San Franciscan heroine, Donaldina Cameron, the Season 2 Finale drops a bomb for one of the show’s central characters. At the end of the episode when Dylan Leary (Dean Jagger) declares “I’m Dylan Leary and I’m here on behalf of the Workingmen’s Party of California,” it’s a major tell. The Workingmen’s Party of California was an actual organization during the period when Warrior is set. This means that Leary is based upon Denis Kearney, the real-life labor union activist and anti-Chinese agitator who founded the Workingmen’s Party.

Warrior Season 2 Episode 10

After the brutal depiction of San Francisco’s Riot of 1877 in the previous episode, the Warrior Season 2 finale feels more like an epilogue. There’s lots of ruminating over drinks, a few cliffhangers to tease Season 3, and one long awaited fight. Since Cinemax abandoned its original programming, this may be the final episode of Warrior unless some other network picks it up. Hopefully, Warrior finds new life somewhere else because Season 2 leaves us hanging and wanting more.

This episode begins with the morning after the Riot. As Chinatown residents recover bodies and tend to their wounded, Mai Ling (Dianne Doan) surveys the damage and discovers that a two-story mural of Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji) has appeared. Clad in a wife-beater shirt with a nunchuck tucked in his armpit, it’s a nod to Bruce Lee’s look in The Way of the Dragon.

Warrior Season 2 Episode 1

Now that the Warrior world is established, the season 2 premiere concerns itself with more character development and the interweaving of story arcs. The action, however, is even more promising as the season premiere opens with (what else?) a fight scene.

When we rejoin Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji), he’s getting beaten and bloodied again, locked in combat in a new no-holds-barred arena, the Barbary Coast Fight Pit, and flashing back to his brutal defeat by at the hands of Li Yong (Joe Taslim) last season. Warrior, the martial-arts-teeming Cinemax crime series inspired by the story notes of Bruce Lee, is heralding its October return with an action-packed full trailer.

Created by executive producer Jonathan Tropper (co-creator of Cinemax’s Banshee), Warrior premiered on Cinemax on April 5, 2019, and kicked off a 10-episode inaugural season that wrapped its run on the following June 7. The series provided an effective combination of historically-based (albeit contemporarily-stylized) crime drama akin to Peaky Blinders with an action-packed, Bruce Lee-channeling martial arts component that resonated with viewers, resulting in a quick second season renewal for another 10-episode set.

The historical drama follows Chinese immigrant Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji), who arrives in San Francisco in 1878, during the Tong Wars, to look for his sister, Mai Ling (Dianne Doan). As a gifted fighter, it is not long before one of the local organized crime factions, known as a tong, recruits Ah Sahm to be its hatchet man. On today’s TV news roundup, Netflix released a trailer for “Teenage Bounty Hunters,” and HBO announced the premiere date for Nxivm docuseries “The Vow.”

HBO announced that docuseries “The Vow” will be available on HBO and HBO Max starting Aug. 23. “The Vow” documents events within Nxivm, an organization rife with charges against it, including sex trafficking. Founder Keith Raniere is currently awaiting his sentence after being convicted on the aforementioned sex trafficking charges. The series will touch on members’ stories of abuse and perceived transformations during their time in the group, giving a voice to those behind the news coverage. The series is executive produced by Lisa Heller and Nancy Abraham, and the directors are Karim Amer and Jehane Noujaim. Watch the trailer below.

After nearly 11 years at ICM Partners, veteran agent Dana Sims has joined CAA. Sims, who previously spent over 10 years at Wma (William Morris Agency before it became William Morris Endeavor) will be based in the CAA Los Angeles office starting next month.

Clients who will be joining Sims at CAA are Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Pearl Thusi, Alyssa Goss, and Dean Jagger, with others to be announced at a later date.

News of Dana exit comes soon after Deadline reported Laura Gordon, a rising star TV literary agent at ICM, had left the agency to join CAA.

Veteran agent Dana Sims is joining Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in the Motion Picture Talent department effective July 1, the agency announced on Thursday.

Previously, Sims spent 11 years at ICM. She will be based in the Los Angeles office of CAA.

Sims brings clients to CAA that include Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Pearl Thusi, Alyssa Goss, and Dean Jagger. Others will be announced soon.

Cinemax has released the first trailer and key art for the forthcoming action drama series Warrior created and executive produced by Jonathan Tropper (Banshee) under Tropper Ink Productions and Justin Lin on behalf of Perfect Storm Entertainment. Deserting a festival’s official competition for a thematic retrospective can feel somewhat awkward, especially at an extravaganza so rich in new voices as the International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr).
