I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."
Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a great one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each.
"AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's "Castle Rock," to Syfy's "Channel Zero." Before "AHS," you'd have to...

The Slasher franchise is evolving.
The latest chapter in the thrilling anthology is headed to Shudder, and we have our first deadly look.
Premiering August 12 on Shudder, Slasher: Flesh & Blood follows a wealthy but dysfunctional family that gathers for a reunion on a secluded island only to learn they’ll be pitted against one another in a cruel game of life and death, all while being stalked by a mysterious masked killer.
Nothing is what it seems, and no one is safe as the tension- and the body count- ratchets up.
As with the past installments of the series, Slasher: Flesh & Blood will combine elements of traditional murder mystery with the intense horror and bold kills that audiences have come to expect.
The trailer is perfect, showing a family invited to the island with the aim of winning deadly games to inherit the family fortune.
It's a compelling hook,...

"This is unnatural, we gotta tell someone." "No, we can't!" "Why not...?" "Because they'll take it away from us!!" Time to catch up with this clever sci-fi short film titled Burnt Grass, which originally premiered in 2014 at the Toronto Film Festival. Thanks to a bump from Short of the Week, it's now available to watch on YouTube. Alex Paxton-Beesley and Christopher Jacot star as Sally & Jack, a young couple in the city, discover a strange phenomenon in their backyard that duplicates organic life. Sally quickly envisions its wild possibilities, while Jack suffers its consequences. This almost reminds me of the duplication machine in The Prestige, but with entirely different consequences. If you're intrigued by cloning, this is a must watch short. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this. Brief description from YouTube: "Sally and Jack, a young couple in the city, discover a strange phenomenon in...

"Our next contract's a big one..." Neon has finally debuted a full-length official trailer for the uber-violent sci-fi horror film Possessor, the latest film from filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg (son of the iconic David Cronenberg). Everyone loved the teaser for this a few months ago. It first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to quite a bit of buzz, only allowing 18+ to watch it because of graphic sex, nudity, and violence. And it seems they'll be releasing an "Uncut" version - using that buzz as marketing. Possessor follows an agent who works for a secretive organization that uses brain-implant technology to inhabit other people's bodies - ultimately driving them to commit assassinations for high-paying clients. The thriller stars Andrea Riseborough, with Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sean Bean, Tuppence Middleton, Christopher Abbott, Kaniehtiio Horn, Rossif Sutherland, Christopher Jacot, and Hanneke Talbot. I still think the first teaser trailer is better,...

"Interface is active." Neon has revealed the first teaser trailer for the uber-violent, freaky new sci-fi horror film Possessor, the latest film from filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg (son of the iconic David Cronenberg). "Reindeer are jerks! They've always been jerks..." Screen Media Ventures has released an official trailer for a cute animated kids movie titled Elliot: The Littlest Reindeer, made by animation studio Awesometown Entertainment based in Toronto. The fun holiday movie is about Elliot, a small but determined miniature horse, who travels to the North Pole to compete for a spot alongside the famous reindeer that pull Santa's sleigh. Against all odds, Elliot and his friend Hazel the goat set out to prove that no dream is too big when you believe in yourself. They've been teaching this lesson to kids for generations now. Josh Hutcherson voices Elliot, and the full voice cast includes Samantha Bee, Morena Baccarin, John Cleese, Martin Short, Jeff Dunham, Christopher Jacot, Jean Yoon, plus George Buza as Santa. This looks super duper, extra cheesy with all the toppings, created as ideal holiday entertainment for anyone with young kids.

If a character is going to return to a show, he may as well do it in a big way.
So it was for Chris (Travis Milne) in "What I Lost," Thursday's (Aug. 15) episode of ABC's "Rookie Blue." His visit to Toronto with his family initially revealed an even-more-fun side of Andy and Nick (Missy Peregrym, Peter Mooney), who played with Chris' young son Christian at a park playground, but things turned very serious very fast.
As the former undercover partners started to have a conversation about whether to embark on a personal relationship, they were distracted by a woman's cry for help after her companion collapsed. Nick and Andy ran to the rescue -- and when Andy returned, Christian was gone.
Oliver (Matt Gordon) began to lead the investigation, but Andy didn't deal well with suddenly being cast in the role of victim. And upon his arrival at the scene,...

A man gets onto the subway train at the last moment. Ellie (Sydney Park) gives up her seat to him. It was apparent it wasn't really a man since he had effeminate features! Another man gets up and questions what's in the cigar box and asks if he remembers him, cos he knows him. They get off at the next stop where a struggle ensues and the old man is killed. Flack (Eddie Cahill) bets Mac (Gary Sinise) coffee that this'll be the best Cs he'll have for the entire week. Hawkes (Hill Harper) gives Flack the pleasure of asking Mac what his age is. Hawkes answers in his 30's and he's actually a she. Flack prefers his coffee, black with no sugar. Mac should know how he has his coffee by now, mustn't he. At the end of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring I remember being awestruck for two reasons. One it was a cinematic experience to behold and I had just beheld it; it was refreshing and exhilarating. The second feeling was a pang of instantaneous remorse when the first name sprawled across the scene for the end credits.
“That’s it?! What?! No! More!”
I had just sat through a 3 hour film which had left me wanting more. I was not and am not an avid Tolkien fan and even resented the man slightly going in to the film. By the end, Peter Jackson had made us amiable acquaintances. That’s what a good film does, it draws you in to a new world, makes you feel and then spits you back out with little pieces of it still attached to your mind. Keep that in mind: I...

America’s fascination with the scared straight routine has long since run its course, but that doesn’t mean the shock tactics involved don’t still carry some weight. Boot Camp tells a story inspired by true events about the “correctional facilities” that still exist across the world, nestled away in countries whose laws don’t have as much red tape as those in the good ol’ U.S. of A. These boot camps aren’t mini-Guantanamo Bays, their clientele never conspired to fly a plane into a building; the people being held here are problematic teenagers whose parents have run out of options and just don’t know what else to do. If you’ll believe it, there are in fact camps like this in the world and their purposes aren’t far off from what you’ll see in this thriller starring Mila Kunis – but the film’s...

Summer TV doesn't have a lot of jewels, but the show SciFi is using to relaunch itself as SyFy sparkles like a logic diamond in a coal mine. The quirky little town of Eureka is where the government keeps the coolest toys - forget Area 51, that's for tourists.
