Thanks to his MCU stardom in both the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers movies, Dave Bautista has accrued a box office total well into the billions, but his latest outing just narrowly managed to open inside the top 10. In the Lost Lands, which also stars Milla Jovovich, earned $1.0 million at the box office this weekend to claim the #10 spot, falling behind Rule Breakers and Mufasa: The Lion King but finishing ahead of One of Them Days and Heart Eyes. Spaghetti western meets post-apocalyptic horror; dark fantasy rubs up against two-fisted, pistol-firing Hong Kong action.

Paul W.S. Anderson, known for directing the Resident Evil film series and the cult classic sci-fi horror Event Horizon, is stepping into new territory with his latest project, In the Lost Lands. This fantasy-action film is adapted from a 1982 short story by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

Anderson described the film as an “adult fairy tale,” full of “bone-crunching violence” and “horrific surprises.” He explains that this movie is unlike anything he has done before, especially in terms of its look and tone. “It’s very different to anything I’ve done before,” Anderson says. “I really wanted to embrace the mythic fairy tale quality of it, so it’s an R-rated fairy tale, that’s for sure.”

Anderson who, with this latest adaptation, lands another “rotten” score to his largely green-splattered back catalog.

Getting new or completed material from George R.R. Martin seems to be a tall order these days. But thankfully, his back-catalog of writing is a treasure trove that Paul W.S. Anderson is dipping into for his latest project with spouse and long-time collaborator Milla Jovovich, and first-time collaborator/not spouse Dave Bautista. Their fantasy epic In Lost Lands is slated to hit theaters February 25th, 2025, and Martin shared a new image, which you can see below, on his blog.

Sequels should only be made if specific conditions are met, such as having the original director involved and a well-crafted story to continue the franchise without ruining its legacy. Little Women and Back to the Future deserve sequels, while declining franchises like Transformers need to end. The success of a sequel depends on various factors, including the availability and willingness of the cast and director. Greta Gerwig should write and direct Barbie 2 for it to have a chance at surpassing the original. The sequel would need to meet high expectations and deliver a message about self-love just as profound.

With so many unnecessary sequels and prequels coming out these days, it is a pity that amazing franchises and standalone movies that deserve another installment are still overlooked. While Little Women and Back to the Future are long overdue for sequels because there are more stories to tell, declining franchises like Transformers can't die fast enough.

Though season 7 is still in production, Outlander is confirmed to return for season 8 on Starz, which will also be the last. Outlander premiered on the network in 2014 and is based around a World War II English combat nurse from 1945 who is reunited with her husband, Frank, after the war, only to be whisked away through time after touching a magical stone in Scotland and ends up in 1743. The series stars Caitríona Balfe as combat nurse Claire Randall and Sam Heughan as Scottish soldier and linguist James Fraser. The series is based on books written by author Diana Gabaldon.

According to Variety, Outlander has been renewed for season 8 by Starz, with confirmation that it will be the show's last. The news comes months before the premiere of Outlander season 7 on the premium cable and streaming channel, which is slated for a summer 2023 release. For decades, the Terminator franchise has opted to largely make Arnold Schwarzenegger its central aspect/selling point. The series stars Tom Felton (Harry Potter) and Natalia Tena (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) and I‘ve liked what I’ve seen from it so far. This new trailer features more footage and gives us more details on what exactly is going on in this dark sci-fi tale.

In TV, there are very few happy stories about groups of people going to uncharted areas of space. Adding to those list of (likely) doomed space adventurers comes “Origin,” the latest sci-fi offering from YouTube Premium.

At a New York Comic Con panel on Thursday, the show unveiled the official trailer for series, which is set to debut on the subscription service next month. “Origin” is a new intergalactic spin on the classic “Dirty Dozen” trope, taking people with troubled pasts and offering them pardons in exchange for some dangerous mission. This time, that mission takes the people on board a ship bound for a distant planet capable of sustaining life.

As the trailer shows, when this ragtag crew wakes up from suspended animation, they find that some mysterious force as slaughtered all of their fellow passengers. And thus begins the 10-episode-long process of trying to stay alive far, far...

The teaser trailer was revealed today at a panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego attended by series creators and stars and moderated by BuzzFeed’s Marcus Jones.

The cast and creators of YouTube’s Origin landed at San Diego Comic-Con to give the confab the first look at the show which is a mash-up of Lost, Alien, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers to tell a multi-layered sci-fi treat.

“I don’t think Origin isn’t just one thing — it’s many different things,” said show creator Mika Wika Watkins. She says that its exciting that she gets to write a sci-fi show, but it jumps to different genres, exploring the Japanese mafia, German noir, and even a Vr love story.

The first trailer dropped before the panel (watch above) and says, “This is a new world, where your history no longer has any relevance.” And if I’m being honest, it is an unexpected impressive thrill. Based on the trailer alone, YouTube is coming through with some sci-fi realness.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and went on to play at the Berlin Film Festival as well. The first teaser trailer dropped earlier this year, but this full trailer gives us a better look. Elba's Yardie, based on the novel by Victor Headley, is about a young Jamaican boy who moves to London in the 80s and gets involved in gang war in Hackney. Two alums from the Harry Potter movie franchise, Natalia Tena and Tom Felton, along with newcomer Sen Mitsuji, are set to topline Origin, YouTube’s upcoming sci-fi thriller series. Paul W.S. Anderson is directing the first two episodes of the show, from The Crown and Outlander producers Left Bank Pictures, Midnight Radio (CBS’ Zoo), CiTVC and Sony Pictures Television International Productions. Nora Arnezeder, Fraser James, Philipp Christopher, Madalyn Horcher, and Siobhán Cullen round out the series regular cast.

Created, written and exec produced by Mika Watkins, the 10-episode series follows a group of strangers who find themselves stranded on a spacecraft bound for a distant planet. The abandoned passengers must work together for survival, but quickly realize that one of them is far from who they claim to be. Tena will play Lana, Felton is Logan, Mitsuji is Shun.

This morning both the Sundance Institute and Picturehouse announced this year’s programme for Sundance Film Festival: London. Female stories and filmmakers shine brightly in this years line-up as seven out of the twelve films showcased at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: London were directed by women. Along with a thrilling array of female leads on screen, the selection champions female voices and highlights some of the broad and excellent women-led work direct from Sundance Utah.

The Festival, which will take place between the 31st May – 3 June at Picturehouse Central, will open with the UK premiere of Jennifer Fox’s The Tale, starring Laura Dern and Elizabeth Debicki. The festival also honours British talent once again, this time by premiering Idris Elba’s directorial debut, Yardie. Women in Film takes centre stage at this year’s event, as movements such as Time’s Up and #MeToo continue to highlight inequality in the film industry.

I sit before you a broken, devastated Resident Evil fan after watching Paul W.S. Anderson’s final nail in Alice’s coffin, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. This is coming from a Resident Evil apologist, nonetheless. Someone who enthusiastically purchased the original trilogy on special edition. Someone who’s most swoon-worthy cinematic crush is Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine. Someone who goes to bat for Kevin Durand as Barry Burton, or refers to all six five previous Resident Evil movies as sweet horror junk food. These sentiments are wholly sincere, but even an Alice devotee like myself can’t recognize The Final Chapter as a fitting means to any franchise “end” (there’s always sequel potential). Abandon hope and pray for a swift finish all you want – welcome to the lowest depths of mainstream horror Hell.

With the January 27 release date getting closer and closer, two new clips from Resident Evil: The Final Chapter have just arrived. The first of these new videos features Alice Abernathy investigating a room, when she realizes she's not alone, with several monitors turning on, showcasing the nefarious Red Queen. For this final installment of the long-running series, the Red Queen is actually played played by Ever Anderson, the eight-year-old daughter of Milla Jovovich and director Paul W.S. Anderson, in her acting debut. Here's what Milla Jovovich had to say during a live Facebook Q&A in August, when her daughter asked what it was like to work with her.

Pegged for release late next month, Screen Gems has all hands at the pump in anticipation of the film’s grand debut, and given that The Final Chapter stands as the franchise’s last gasp – providing there’s no spinoff/soft reboot years down the line – there’s a particular sense of urgency driving the marketing campaign to ensure Resident Evil goes out on a high.

Ditching the super slick, futuristic aesthetic that bled into both Afterlife and 2012’s Retribution, The Final Chapter is out to recapture the bleak apocalyptic look of Resident Evil: Extinction, and the gritty poster below really embodies that change in tone. Fans of Fox’s Gotham series will no doubt be able to locate a handful of similarities between the one-sheet and the key art for Rise of the Villains – the positioning of the characters, the framing, you name it – but more than anything else, today’s promo signals a return to Raccoon City.
