Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and adapted from a story by Game of Thrones’ George R. R. Martin, dystopian sci-fi thriller In the Lost Lands aims for a fun mixture of spaghetti western, swords and sorcery movies and Mad Max-style post-apocalypse thrills, with a dash of werewolf action thrown in. Unfortunately, it falls painfully short across the board.
“The world you know is gone,” announces the opening caption. Following an unspecified apocalyptic event, everyone in the world now lives in the same place, for some reason. They are ruled over by both a young Queen (Amara Okereke as Melange) and a violent religious cult lead by The Patriarch (Fraser James) and his ruthless enforcer Ash (Arly Jover).

Thanks to his MCU stardom in both the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers movies, Dave Bautista has accrued a box office total well into the billions, but his latest outing just narrowly managed to open inside the top 10. In the Lost Lands, which also stars Milla Jovovich, earned $1.0 million at the box office this weekend to claim the #10 spot, falling behind Rule Breakers and Mufasa: The Lion King but finishing ahead of One of Them Days and Heart Eyes. In the Lost Lands is based on the short story of the same name by Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin, with Paul W.S. Anderson writing and directing the film. Fraser James and Deirdre Mullins were also tapped for roles in the fantasy action thriller.

Milla Jovovich tells us about her new action adventure, In The Lost Lands, adapting George Rr Martin, and giving the middle finger to critics.
Against a parched landscape, two figures emerge from the shimmering haze. One is a grizzled bounty hunter; the other a mysterious woman with a dark past. Neither quite trusts the other, but they’re united by a potentially deadly mission in hostile territory. Oh, and the bounty hunter has a pet snake with two heads. And the mysterious woman’s a witch.
This is In The Lost Lands, the latest movie from director and co-writer Paul Ws Anderson and Milla Jovovich – actor, action star, and Anderson’s long-time wife. Like their earlier movies together – most notably the run of Resident Evil films they made between 2002 and 2016 – it’s a true collision of genres. Spaghetti western meets post-apocalyptic horror; dark fantasy rubs up against two-fisted, pistol-firing Hong Kong action.

Paul W.S. Anderson, known for directing the Resident Evil film series and the cult classic sci-fi horror Event Horizon, is stepping into new territory with his latest project, In the Lost Lands. This fantasy-action film is adapted from a 1982 short story by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.
Anderson described the film as an “adult fairy tale,” full of “bone-crunching violence” and “horrific surprises.” He explains that this movie is unlike anything he has done before, especially in terms of its look and tone. “It’s very different to anything I’ve done before,” Anderson says. “I really wanted to embrace the mythic fairy tale quality of it, so it’s an R-rated fairy tale, that’s for sure.”

The latest attempt at bringing the works of Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin to the screen has sadly found itself wanting. Starring former MCU star Dave Bautista and Resident Evil lead Milla Jovovich, the epic action fantasy movie In the Lost Lands hails from Mortal Kombat and Monster Hunter director Paul W. S. Anderson who, with this latest adaptation, lands another “rotten” score to his largely green-splattered back catalog.
The first reviews for In the Lost Lands are now in, and the epic action fantasy has sadly been declared “rotten,” landing a score of just 21% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Shawn Van Horn of Collider scored the movie a savage 3/10, saying...

At the center of Paul W.S. Anderson’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s short story “In the Lost Lands” is Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich), a witch whose business dealings are known to end in ironic tragedy. Nevertheless, she’s tasked to obtain the gift of transforming into a werewolf for the queen (Amara Okereke) of a city built into a mountain, and to do so, Gray Alys contracts the hunter Boyce (Dave Bautista) to take her into the titular realm.
Anyone who’s seen his Resident Evil films and adaptations of Monster Hunter and The Three Musketeers knows that Anderson doesn’t place stock in fidelity to his source material. For one, there’s nothing in Martin’s story to suggest the post-apocalyptic Mad Max-esque world that the film portrays, a wasteland of skeletal ironwork blasted into shades of brown and gray. There are bloodthirsty church agents here who wear old-timey medieval robes,...

"Her power grows stronger by the day." Vertical has revealed the first official trailer for a new fantasy action adventure movie called In the Lost Lands, a collaboration between filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson (yep he's still making more movies) and writer George R.R. Martin. A queen, desperate to find happiness in love, takes a daring step: she sends the powerful and feared witch Gray Alys to the "Lost Lands" to give her the magical gift of turning into a werewolf. She's joined by the mysterious hunter Boyce, fighting against dark creatures and merciless enemies, roaming an eerie and dangerous world. So it's climate change future but also has fantastical creatures galore? Starring Milla Jovovich as Gray Alys, Dave Bautista as Boyce, with Arly Jover, Amara Okereke, Fraser James, Simon Lööf, and Deirdre Mullins. This is set for a theatrical release this March but it doesn't seem like it will make much of a splash,...

Getting new or completed material from George R.R. Martin seems to be a tall order these days. But thankfully, his back-catalog of writing is a treasure trove that Paul W.S. Anderson is dipping into for his latest project with spouse and long-time collaborator Milla Jovovich, and first-time collaborator/not spouse Dave Bautista. Their fantasy epic In Lost Lands is slated to hit theaters February 25th, 2025, and Martin shared a new image, which you can see below, on his blog.

Sequels should only be made if specific conditions are met, such as having the original director involved and a well-crafted story to continue the franchise without ruining its legacy. Little Women and Back to the Future deserve sequels, while declining franchises like Transformers need to end. The success of a sequel depends on various factors, including the availability and willingness of the cast and director. Greta Gerwig should write and direct Barbie 2 for it to have a chance at surpassing the original. The sequel would need to meet high expectations and deliver a message about self-love just as profound.
With so many unnecessary sequels and prequels coming out these days, it is a pity that amazing franchises and standalone movies that deserve another installment are still overlooked. While Little Women and Back to the Future are long overdue for sequels because there are more stories to tell, declining franchises like Transformers can't die fast enough.

For decades, the Terminator franchise has opted to largely make Arnold Schwarzenegger its central aspect/selling point. However, since The Terminator and especially Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the series has had severely diminishing returns. So, changes were needed. Original creator James Cameron is back to help shepherd this latest sequel, which ignores everything after the first two outings, and so is Schwarzenegger. That’s not what makes this new version matter though…not in the least. What sets this one apart is the return of Linda Hamilton. Her re-entry into the series turns out to be the secret sauce. Cameron helps re-focus the mythology, but Hamilton is the heart and soul of Terminator. Opening this week, Terminator: Dark Fate understands this, making it the first fully successful sequel within this IP since T2. The film is an action blockbuster, picking up after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, where...

From time to time, it’s worth considering whether a director or a screenwriter has more influence over the final outcome of a film. Can a bad script undercut a good director? Is a good one able to hide the flaws of a bad filmmaker? The answer to both probably resides somewhere in between. The one thing I’m fairly certain of is this: a first time director can’t make do with a poor screenplay. Unfortunately for Idris Elba, the actor is making his directorial debut utilizing a script that’s lacking in juice. This makes Yardie, his first effort behind the camera, a step or two down from where it otherwise could have been. Elba shows some chops, but the material fails him throughout. He elevates it somewhat, but not enough to save the day. The film is a crime drama, with the sort of plot we’ve...

The series stars Tom Felton (Harry Potter) and Natalia Tena (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) and I‘ve liked what I’ve seen from it so far. This new trailer features more footage and gives us more details on what exactly is going on in this dark sci-fi tale.
In Origin, a chilling new original series from the producers of The Crown & Lost, we meet a group of troubled passengers as they wake up on a damaged spaceship abandoned in deep space. Each having left behind a dark past in search of a fresh start on a newly colonised planet, they’re desperate to survive at all costs. But as their terrifying situation spirals into paranoia, they come to realize that the greatest threat to their dream of starting over – and indeed their lives – might actually be within their midst…...

In TV, there are very few happy stories about groups of people going to uncharted areas of space. Adding to those list of (likely) doomed space adventurers comes “Origin,” the latest sci-fi offering from YouTube Premium.
At a New York Comic Con panel on Thursday, the show unveiled the official trailer for series, which is set to debut on the subscription service next month. “Origin” is a new intergalactic spin on the classic “Dirty Dozen” trope, taking people with troubled pasts and offering them pardons in exchange for some dangerous mission. This time, that mission takes the people on board a ship bound for a distant planet capable of sustaining life.
As the trailer shows, when this ragtag crew wakes up from suspended animation, they find that some mysterious force as slaughtered all of their fellow passengers. And thus begins the 10-episode-long process of trying to stay alive far, far...

The cast and creators of YouTube’s Origin landed at San Diego Comic-Con to give the confab the first look at the show which is a mash-up of Lost, Alien, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers to tell a multi-layered sci-fi treat.
“I don’t think Origin isn’t just one thing — it’s many different things,” said show creator Mika Wika Watkins. She says that its exciting that she gets to write a sci-fi show, but it jumps to different genres, exploring the Japanese mafia, German noir, and even a Vr love story.
The first trailer dropped before the panel (watch above) and says, “This is a new world, where your history no longer has any relevance.” And if I’m being honest, it is an unexpected impressive thrill. Based on the trailer alone, YouTube is coming through with some sci-fi realness.

"This is a story about the path I chose..." Studiocanal UK has released a new full-length official trailer for the film Yardie, the feature directorial debut of actor Idris Elba. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and went on to play at the Berlin Film Festival as well. The first teaser trailer dropped earlier this year, but this full trailer gives us a better look. Elba's Yardie, based on the novel by Victor Headley, is about a young Jamaican boy who moves to London in the 80s and gets involved in gang war in Hackney. Aml Ameen stars as D, and the full cast includes Everaldo Creary, Stephen Graham, Mark Rhino Smith, Akin Gazi, Fraser James, Deepak Anand, Naomi Ackie, and Shantol Jackson. The film looks better than it is, unfortunately, since the reviews from the festivals haven't been great. I'm glad Idris Elba is getting into directing to tell stories like this,...

This morning both the Sundance Institute and Picturehouse announced this year’s programme for Sundance Film Festival: London. Female stories and filmmakers shine brightly in this years line-up as seven out of the twelve films showcased at this year’s Sundance Film Festival: London were directed by women. Along with a thrilling array of female leads on screen, the selection champions female voices and highlights some of the broad and excellent women-led work direct from Sundance Utah.
The Festival, which will take place between the 31st May – 3 June at Picturehouse Central, will open with the UK premiere of Jennifer Fox’s The Tale, starring Laura Dern and Elizabeth Debicki. The festival also honours British talent once again, this time by premiering Idris Elba’s directorial debut, Yardie. Women in Film takes centre stage at this year’s event, as movements such as Time’s Up and #MeToo continue to highlight inequality in the film industry.

"It's time to let go... Choose the right path, son." Get your first look at the directorial debut of English actor Idris Elba, titled Yardie. I sit before you a broken, devastated Resident Evil fan after watching Paul W.S. Anderson’s final nail in Alice’s coffin, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. This is coming from a Resident Evil apologist, nonetheless. Someone who enthusiastically purchased the original trilogy on special edition. Someone who’s most swoon-worthy cinematic crush is Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine. Someone who goes to bat for Kevin Durand as Barry Burton, or refers to all six five previous Resident Evil movies as sweet horror junk food. These sentiments are wholly sincere, but even an Alice devotee like myself can’t recognize The Final Chapter as a fitting means to any franchise “end” (there’s always sequel potential). Abandon hope and pray for a swift finish all you want – welcome to the lowest depths of mainstream horror Hell.

With the January 27 release date getting closer and closer, two new clips from Resident Evil: The Final Chapter have just arrived. The first of these new videos features Alice Abernathy investigating a room, when she realizes she's not alone, with several monitors turning on, showcasing the nefarious Red Queen. For this final installment of the long-running series, the Red Queen is actually played played by Ever Anderson, the eight-year-old daughter of Milla Jovovich and director Paul W.S. Anderson, in her acting debut. Here's what Milla Jovovich had to say during a live Facebook Q&A in August, when her daughter asked what it was like to work with her.
"It was so amazing to work with you. You are [an] unbelievably talented actress, more talented than I've ever been. It was an honor and a privilege to work with you. You're such a great listener and you understand what it is...

The Red Queen lends a dubious helping hand in a new pair of clips for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
Pegged for release late next month, Screen Gems has all hands at the pump in anticipation of the film’s grand debut, and given that The Final Chapter stands as the franchise’s last gasp – providing there’s no spinoff/soft reboot years down the line – there’s a particular sense of urgency driving the marketing campaign to ensure Resident Evil goes out on a high.
Of course, the onus has been placed on writer-director Paul Ws Anderson – a stalwart of the Re series since day one – and at least based on the footage released thus far, there’s reason to be hopeful ahead of Alice’s final journey, one which will order Milla Jovovich’s kick-ass heroine back to Raccoon City. It’s here that Alice encounters the Red Queen,...

Milla Jovovich’s Alice gears up for her long-anticipated curtain call in the stylish new one-sheet for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Paul Ws Anderson’s lavish action sequel that stands as the sixth and final entry into Sony and Screen Gems’ long-running franchise.
Ditching the super slick, futuristic aesthetic that bled into both Afterlife and 2012’s Retribution, The Final Chapter is out to recapture the bleak apocalyptic look of Resident Evil: Extinction, and the gritty poster below really embodies that change in tone. Fans of Fox’s Gotham series will no doubt be able to locate a handful of similarities between the one-sheet and the key art for Rise of the Villains – the positioning of the characters, the framing, you name it – but more than anything else, today’s promo signals a return to Raccoon City.
