Where Are They Now? The Legends Of Dynasty John James And AMC Alan Dysert
Image
It’s been a bit since I’ve posted a blog, which hopefully someone out there has noticed. I had to take a brief hiatus from my daily Days viewing to get a real job (temporarily!). But I didn’t completely leave the soap world behind. For the past six week, I served as the production coordinator for a civil war feature filming in middle Tennessee produced by All My Children veteran Alan Dysert (ex-Sean Cudahy) and featuring Dynasty legend John James (ex-Jeff Colby).

Yes, that’s right. Nashville is not just home to the Dimera warehouse in which all the dead bodies of Salems finest and not-so-finest are resurrected when the storyline serves. It is also home to quite a few daytime alums. Melissa Reeves, Scott Reeves, Jonathan Jackson. So it should come as no surprise a movie filming just outside of Nashville would feature not one but two former sudsers.

Donald Trump’s Republican National Convention Begins: What To Expect During The Week
Image
The Republican National Convention opened Monday afternoon, with a boosted security presence following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

That has given the proceedings a different tenor of coverage, with Trump expected to appear on the floor Monday night to a rousing reception of delegates and supporters.

Before the Trump rally shooting, correspondents already were looking to a convention that would be more than just a coronation of the Republican nominee, as he has yet to announce his vice presidential running mate. The former president has signaled that will come today.

Now, with the assassination attempt and concerns over the escalation of political violence, media focus will be on the speakers and the extent to which they display messages of unity versus red meat rhetoric.

“The reality is, this whole convention now is going to be really colored by what happened the other, and just the images of him pumping first and saying,...

Image
Tucker Carlson is among the celebrity names slated to speak at next week’s Republican National Convention, reportedly in a plum spot on Thursday night before Donald Trump himself accepts the party nomination.

In addition to a long list of elected officials who are backing Trump, the speaker lineup also includes celebrities like Amber Rose, the model, rapper and former stripper; Dana White, the CEO of UFC; and Savannah Chrisley, the TV personality whose parents are serving prison time for fraud and tax evasion. Also on the bill: Lee Greenwood and Chris Janson.

Notably missing from the lineup: Former First Lady Melania Trump and the former president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump. They each spoke at the 2016 and 2020 conventions.

House GOP leaders like Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Majority Whip Tom Emmer are on the list, but Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Minority Whip John Thune and Republican...

Republican Lawmakers Want to Ban Mifepristone. Most People Hate That Idea
Image
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case that threatens to limit access to mifepristone — a critical component of the abortion pill protocol — nationwide. A decision in the case is not expected until June, but close observers of the Supreme Court seem to think the case will be dismissed over a lack of standing.

The fact that this case made it all the way to the high court, though, is a testament to the reality that ending access to the abortion pill — the most common method of abortion,...

My Son Hunter Biden and the Weird World of Conservative Movies
Image
There are certainly popular films and TV shows that speak toward a more conservative ideology. American Sniper and Passion of the Christ were nominated for several Academy Awards in their respective years, with the latter receiving a four-star review from Roger Ebert. While these powerful movies went on to critical acclaim, they are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to conservative motion pictures.

Dig a little deeper, and you’ll find what Slate calls “an ever-flowing ouroboros of frenzied speculation and self-contradictory propaganda.” My Son Hunter (about President Biden's son) and 2000 Mules (about Trump's election loss) are recent examples, but movies like them have existed for decades upon decades. In these films, right-wing ideology is disseminated through bizarre, confusing, and often empty reproductions of cinematic language.

Update July 2, 2023: This article has been updated with even more context about the strange world of conservative-based media.

The sight of a southern swamp opens the latest feature from writer/director/star Nick McCallum, with the area including gators residing in the water, and a hand visibly poking out of the ground. It belongs to murdered ranch owner Robert Marks, who was last seen boarding a boat with his missing daughter, Sloan. This is conveyed in the intrusive voice-over from ex-cop Isaiah Slade (McCallum), arriving in the small town searching for answers as to Sloan’s whereabouts.

As he converses with the local Chief (Richard Gunn), tries speaking with Robert’s remaining daughter Beth (Mary Drew Ahrens), and forms a bond with aspiring musician Brandy (Anais Lilit), it becomes clear that Slade is personally invested in uncovering the truth.

Laurence Fox’s embarrassing Hunter Biden movie is a fate worse than ‘cancellation’
Image
Can a person ever really be “cancelled”? I used to think not. Supposedly radioactive celebrities still manage to land lucrative Netflix specials, sell out stadiums, and win illustrious awards. But what happens when they don’t? You end up with a film like My Son Hunter.

The political satire, released today online, focuses on Hunter Biden, the son of the sitting US president. It stars Laurence Fox as Hunter, John James as Joe Biden, and Gina Carano as the narrator, a secret service agent invented for the purposes of the film. Fox, an actor whose early films include Robert Altman’s Gosford Park and Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age, has become a self-professed “cancelled” person in recent years, thanks to widely criticised remarks on issues such as Covid-19, Black Lives Matter, and trans rights. Carano, a former wrestler, is also said to have been “cancelled”; her recurring stint...

Breitbart releases trailer for Hunter Biden movie starring British actor Laurence Fox
Image
Breitbart has released the trailer of its new movie My Son Hunter — directed by Die Hard actor Robert Davi and starring Laurence Fox and Gina Carano — in a cinematic attempt to draw attention to scandals involving president Joe Biden and his family.

The trailer was released on Friday on Truth Social and the website mysonhunter.com, and gives a first substantial look at Breitbart’s debut foray into scripted entertainment. The film tries to tell the story of Hunter Biden, Mr Biden’s son, as he navigates a host of controversies involving prostitution, international business dealings, drugs, sex, Chinese spies, and Ukrainian oligarchs.

The film is scheduled for release on 7 September – two months before the 2022 midterm elections – straight to its own website.

When the film teaser was revealed earlier, the CEO of Breitbart Larry Solov said: “Breitbart has always believed freedom flourishes with more voices, not less. As we begin distributing films,...

Ex-Star Wars star Gina Carano to play secret service agent whose hair is sniffed by ‘Joe Biden’ in new film
Image
Former Star Wars star Gina Carano is set to play a secret service agent whose hair is sniffed by Joe Biden in a new biopic .

Distributed by the controversial far-right media organisation Breitbart News, the film, entitled My Son Hunter, focuses on the US President’s son, Hunter Biden, played by Laurence Fox.

Carano plays a secret service agent tasked with working in close proximity with Biden, while John James (Dynasty) plays Biden himself.

The teaser asks viewers to “witness the sensational, bombshell, unbelievable, scandalous, corrupt, censored, shocking true story” of the Bidens’ lives.

Despite this claim, the film is expected to deviate significantly from confirmed fact. My Son Hunter’s opening line, delivered by Carano’s character, reportedly disclaims: “This is not a true story, except for all the facts.”

As well as a scene in which “Joe Biden” can be seen smelling the hair of Carano’s character,...

‘The Bachelor’ Finale: Who Won Matt James’ Season?
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the March 15 season finale of “The Bachelor.”

Reality host Chris Harrison coined the phrase “the most dramatic season ever,” but nothing has been more dramatic than the tension escalating off-screen during this season of “The Bachelor.”

Season 25 — featuring the franchise’s first-ever Black star — culminated in such a way that even the most twisted producers could have never imagined.

Following a racist scandal that exploded due to contestant Rachael Kirkconnell’s resurfaced social media photos, it was none other Kirkconnell who ended up winning Matt James’ heart.

Before the titular Bachelor gave out his final rose, he spent his last days at the Nemacolin resort vetting each relationship. He was joined by his mom, Patty Cuculo James, and brother, John James, to meet his final contestants.

Finalist Michelle Young joined the family first, where she was quickly embraced for her fun and joyful demeanor.

Live Updates: Who Will Win Control of the Senate?
Image
As 2020 election results roll in, control of the Senate remains in the balance — and everything may all come down to Georgia.

The math is not complicated. In the current Senate, Republicans hold a three-seat advantage, 53-47. If Biden wins the presidency, as appears increasingly likely, Vice President Kamala Harris would sit as the Senate’s tie-breaker, and Democrats would need a net gain of three seats to control the chamber. (If Trump wins, Democrats would need to net four seats.)

With projected Senate wins in Arizona and Colorado, and a loss in Alabama,...

Luis Miranda in Siempre, Luis (2020)
In today’s film news roundup, DreamWorks Animation hires a Sony vet, indie comedy “Kombucha Cure” gets cast, “Siempre, Luis” gets sold and Women In Film names new board members.

Acquisition

HBO has acquired worldwide television and streaming rights to the documentary feature film “Siempre, Luis,” which had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

First-time filmmaker John James’ film is a portrait of Luis A. Miranda Jr., a Puerto Rican migrant who helped shape New York politics for over three decades. He’s also the father of Lin-Manuel Miranda.

“My first film started as the story of a tireless migrant who built an extraordinary legacy,” said James. “Yet, as I followed Luis Miranda over a lengthy period of time, I couldn’t have imagined that he would see his native Puerto Rico face catastrophic crisis just as our mainland is thrown into bitter political upheaval. We’re excited...

‘Siempre, Luis,’ Doc on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Father, Nabbed by HBO Documentary Films
HBO Documentary Films has acquired the worldwide streaming and TV rights to “Siempre, Luis” out of the Sundance Film Festival, a documentary that follows Puerto Rican immigrant Luis A. Miranda Jr., HBO announced Friday. Miranda Jr. is the father of Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The film directed by John James’ film is an inspiring portrait of Miranda Jr. and how he shaped New York politics over three decades. Here’s the full synopsis:

When Luis A. Miranda Jr. left Puerto Rico for New York City in the 1970s, he had big dreams, but little did he know how far he’d go. Over the course of a year, Luis Miranda’s devotion to family and country propel him forward. Following the devastation of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, he helps plan relief efforts and manages the logistics behind bringing his son Lin-Manuel Miranda’s award-winning production of ‘Hamilton’ to the island. Exclusive, Updated with more details: In a Sundance Film Festival deal on the ground by a WarnerMedia division, HBO Documentary Films confirmed Deadline’s scoop that it has made a mid-seven-figure deal for worldwide TV and streaming rights to Siempre, Luis, the John James-directed documentary about Luis Miranda, the father of Hamilton‘s Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film premiered last Saturday in Park City.

Lin-Manuel Miranda at an event for Moana (2016)
Sundance 2020: Will the Market Be Colder After Last Year’s Spree?
Lin-Manuel Miranda at an event for Moana (2016)
When it comes to big acquisition deals for independent movies, Sundance is the room where it happens, to borrow a lyric from “Hamilton.” So it’s a lucky coincidence that Lin-Manuel Miranda will be a guest at this year’s film festival.

For the first time, Miranda will hit the slopes in Park City, Utah, to rub shoulders with film aficionados and industry executives. He’s attending the festival as an interview subject in three documentaries, including “Siempre, Luis,” about his father, Luis Miranda, a dogged political consultant who helped organize a series of “Hamilton” performances in Puerto Rico to raise funds for hurricane relief efforts.

“We now have video proof that I’m the slacker of my family,” Miranda says with a laugh. The documentary, directed by John James, took three years to make. Miranda considers himself a fan of the movie — and the genre. “What’s exciting is...

The Battle for the Senate
Donald Trump
The fight to dislodge Donald Trump from the presidency has sparked unprecedented interest in the 2020 Democratic primary, drawing dozens of candidates, including no fewer than seven sitting senators. But the fight to wrest the Senate from Republican control — and oust Mitch McConnell as majority leader — is arguably just as important. Take it from Amy McGrath, the former Marine fighter pilot aiming to win McConnell’s Kentucky Senate seat, who sees curbing McConnell’s power as essential to healing our republic. “He’s the epitome of Washington dysfunction, everything we hate about politics,...

Kid Rock: Federal Election Commission Dismisses Complaints Against Fake Senate Run
The Federal Election Commission (Fec) formally dismissed complaints it received against Kid Rock after the rocker teased a Michigan senate run. In a ruling released this week, the Fec determined Rock did not appear “to have taken even the most basic steps to become a candidate.”

In 2017, Rock hinted that he’d enter the 2018 Michigan senatorial race, using his concerts as a pulpit to voice his political beliefs, launching a campaign website and even selling “Kid Rock for Senate” merchandise.

However, a month before Election Day 2017, the rocker born Robert Ritchie...
