With a career spanning over four decades, Chuck Lorre is well established as one of the most renowned TV writers, producers, and showrunners in the industry, with dozens of credits to his name. But his work in sitcoms has been a standout contribution to modern television, even earning the title ‘King of the Sitcoms.’

Lorre’s extensive credits include the likes of United States of AI, Roseanne, Mike & Molly, and B Positive. However, it’s his sitcoms that truly define his legacy. Some have become cultural icons, some quietly faded away, and a few are still figuring themselves out. It’s common for every filmmaker to yearn for freedom when it comes to their creative endeavors, which can often contribute to some of the most authentic works the medium has to offer. Although such creative freedom is unheard of when it comes to traditional TV networks, which often impose a bunch of restrictions for the showrunners, this isn’t the case for streaming services.

As a result, Chuck Lorre, arguably one of the most renowned figures in the realm of sitcoms, was thrilled to work with the Netflix-driven Disjointed.

Unlike traditional TV outlets, Netflix grants filmmakers excessive creative control over their projects. This has been one of the key factors why many talented figures in showbiz often opt to join the streaming service, which is notable for pushing the ideas that would not have seen the light of day otherwise.

Thirteen-time Emmy winner David Javerbaum has signed with Paradigm for representation.

Javerbaum spent 11 years at “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” as a writer (1999-2002), head writer (2003-2006) and executive producer (2007-2010). During that time, he won 11 Emmys and two Peabody Awards.

Javerbaum is the co-ep of the “Beavis and Butt-Head” revival, which aired its first two seasons on Paramount+ but is moving to Comedy Central for its forthcoming third season. He is also the co-creator of Netflix’s sitcom “Disjointed” with Chuck Lorre.

Elsewhere on TV, Javerbaum was also a consulting producer for “The Late Late Show With James Corden” from 2015 to 2023. He also wrote four Tony Awards opening numbers (two of which went on to win Emmys), including Neil Patrick Harris’ “Not Just for Gays Anymore.”

Leanne Morgan is set to star in a multi-cam comedy series at Netflix that boasts Chuck Lorre as one of its co-creators, Variety has learned.

Morgan co-created the series with Lorre and Susan McMartin. Netflix has given the untitled show a 16-episode order, while also commissioning two more stand up specials from Morgan. That will mark her second and third specials at the streamer following 2023’s “I’m Every Woman.”

“I’ve dreamed of this since childhood, and I can’t believe it has come true! When I started comedy 25 years ago, my goal was to be a part of a sitcom,” Morgan said. “It just goes to show you it’s never too late, and dreams do come true. I’m a grandmama from Tennessee, and now I have a TV show with Chuck Lorre and Netflix. What in the world!?”

Chuck Lorre’s comedies have tackled a wide range of subjects — and now he’s turning his focus to aging.

In his new comedy for Netflix, “The Kominsky Method,” Michael Douglas (Sandy Kominsky) and Alan Arkin (Norman Newlander) star as two friends — a once-famous star and his longtime agent — tackling life’s curveballs as they navigate their later years in Los Angeles.

His stars Alan Arkin and Michael Douglas are 84 and 73 years old, respectively, so going back to the well on that material makes sense.

The 10-episode limited series will launch Sept. 21. The series tells the stories of Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons. Annie’s disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia.

The series also stars Justin Theroux as Dr. James K. Mantleray, who claims he can repair anything about the mind with a sequence of pills of his own invention. “Maniac” was created by Patrick Somerville and directed by Cary Fukunaga.

Next, the highly-anticipated “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” based on the Archie Comics series of the same name, will launch on Oct.

Fox is developing a U.S. version of “Les Guignols,” a satirical puppet show that ran for almost 30 years in France. Ben Silverman’s Propagate has teamed up with French media giant Vivendi on the project, with David Javerbaum (“The Daily Show With Jon Stewart”) tapped to write and executive produce.

“Les Guignols” was a fixture on French TV screens for almost three decades, and its Paris production team will make a pilot presentation for Fox in the French capital. Canal Plus’ recent decision to cancel the series made headlines in France; the final episode aired last Friday. It may now be resurrected as a half-hour series for Fox, which confirmed the project. After several decades as the king of multi-camera comedy, Chuck Lorre is learning a few new tricks this fall. Lorre just launched his first show for a streaming service, Netflix’s marijuana sitcom “Disjointed,” and is behind this fall’s “The Big Bang Theory” prequel series “Young Sheldon,” which represents his first foray into single-camera half-hours.

“I spent 30 years working in front of an audience, so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do,” Lorre recently told IndieWire and Kcrw’s “The Business,” of learning about filmmaking with “Sheldon.” “I was following [director] Jon Favreau around during the pilot shoot just asking questions. ‘What’s that lens? What’s the camera doing now?’ I got to watch the guy make a movie, which I’d never had a chance to do before.”

“Disjointed” was more familiar turf for Lorre, given its multi-camera setup in front of a studio audience.

Reinforcing way too many stereotypes of directionless potheads, the cannabis laced Disjointed is a mess that doesn’t even have the benefit of giving you the munchies.

With the first 10-episodes of the series launching on Netflix on August 25, what the Chuck Lorre co-created and Kathy Bates-led show does do is make you wonder what was going through the heads of such talented people? Or, as I say in my video review above, what were they smoking?

Take away the profanity and slightly risqué situations of Bates’ Ruth Feldman character running an L.A. pot dispensary that would never make it past the censors on the likes of CBS, where TV Hall of Famer Lorre has made his bones and millions over the years, what you also have with Disjointed is a pretty weak sitcom. Now maybe the series co-created by EP and former Daily Show head writer David Javerbaum...

“Disjointed” is a title sporting so many puns that unpacking them proves irresistible. (Pun-haters to the back.) The core word “joint” refers to both a marijuana cigarette and the slang term for any ‘ol place at all; like, say, the dispensary where Kathy Bates’ long-term pot advocate, Ruth, legally sells medicinal and recreational weed in the new Netflix comedy.

“Head to Ruth’s joint and buy as many joints as you’d like!” is a slogan Ruth herself might share in the series: an easy, obvious joke for a show built (mostly) around simple pleasures.

Fans of equally elementary wordplay are probably sold, but not so fast — the new Netflix comedy unveils a harsh buzz upon further pun-vestigation. Optimists could argue “disjointed” refers to the the pieced together family of pot dealers, smokers, and breeders who all work out of Ruth’s shop. Netflix is high on Chuck Lorre. The sitcom mega-producer has partnered with “The Daily Show” alum David Javerbaum to create “Disjointed,” a new pot-themed comedy starring Kathy Bates.

The show is a multi-camera half-hour, and it has been given a 20-episode order, straight to series. Warner Bros. TV, where Lorre is based, is the studio. Lorre and Javerbaum will write and executive produce.
