Nearly 25 years after the first film, the actor, her co-stars and the writer Helen Fielding discuss the ultimate singleton, love and loss – and why Bridget Jones is the female James Bond
Mark Darcy is dead. Bridget Jones fans have been grieving since 2013, when Helen Fielding’s third novel, Mad About the Boy, was published sans Bridget’s hot human-rights lawyer husband. The outcry made front page news (as did the copies that were accidentally printed with 40 pages from David Jason’s memoir). People could not believe that romcom’s favourite reindeer-jumper-wearing dish, who proved that – ding dong! – nice men do kiss like that, was no more.
“Someone ran out of the pub shouting: ‘You’ve murdered Colin Firth!’” Fielding says over a video call, tulips arranged on a huge wooden table in the background, as well they should in a boho-posh Primrose Hill kitchen. “I just want to point out that he is fictional.

It’s one of the least-liked episodes of the much-loved Only Fools And Horses – but the feature-length A Royal Flush had problems behind the scenes.
The final Only Fools And Horses Christmas special aired almost 20 years ago. Nevertheless, les spéciaux de Noël de la famille Trotter, as Del would never say, remain as much a part of the festive season as new socks, mountains of leftovers, and bulk-buying Rennie. David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst and Buster Merryfield have become extended Christmas family members for millions of people.
In all, 18 Only Fools… Christmas specials were broadcast between 1981 and 2003. They were appointment-to-view seasonal telly, and became a ratings bonanza for the BBC. On Christmas Day in 1985, the episode To Hull and Back pulled in 16.9m viewers. Four years later, The Jolly Boys’ Outing drew over 20m viewers. On 29th December 1996, 24.3m tuned into Time on Our Hands to watch the Trotters become millionaires,...

Only Fools and Horses, the legendary British sitcom created by John Sullivan, remains a timeless comedy gem. First hitting screens in 1981, it revolves around the Trotter brothers, Del Boy and Rodney, as they chase dreams of striking it rich through hilariously ill-fated schemes. Living in Peckham, South London, the duo operates their market trading business out of a beaten-up yellow Reliant Regal three-wheeler van.
Del Boy, the older sibling, is a cheeky, quick-witted wheeler-dealer with grand ideas of becoming a millionaire. Rodney, on the other hand, is more level-headed and forever frustrated by his brother’s far-fetched plans.

The show isn’t just about laughs, it’s about family, friendship, and everyday struggles. Alongside Del and Rodney are unforgettable characters like their Grandad, and quirky friends including Trigger, Boycie, and Denzil. From slapstick comedy moments to touching emotional scenes, the series beautifully balanced humor and heart.

When Doctor Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) returned to our screens in the reboot of "Frasier," he brought with him a band of fresh-faces to join in the laughs. Among them was Nicholas Lyndhurst, who became the perfect addition to the reboot as Harvard professor Alan Cornwall, clashing with our favorite psychiatrist in the best ways, all for our amusement.
While not a huge name in America, Lyndhurst is a staple of British television with a career-defining role stretching back to 1981 when he appeared on the beloved sitcom, "Only Fools and Horses." The show saw Lyndhurst as Rodney Trotter, the brother of a south-east London-based, shady street tradesman, Derek "Del Boy" Trotter played by David Jason. Across the pond, the show is held in as high regard as the likes of "Monty Python" and the original iteration of "The Office" as a benchmark in British comedy.

Monty Python is often referred to as “The Beatles of comedy,” but does that mean that they have their very own Pete Best?
Monty Python’s Flying Circus wouldn’t exist without two other shows that came before it: At Last the 1948 Show, which starred both Graham Chapman and John Cleese, and Do Not Adjust Your Set, which featured Terry Jones, Eric Idle and Michael Palin (and its second season incorporated animated sequences from a young American named Terry Gilliam).
Do Not Adjust Your Set was technically a children’s show, but the surreal sketches seemingly resonated more with adults, and as word spread, grown-ups began “rushing home from the office” in order to watch it.
In addition to the future Pythons, Do Not Adjust Your Set also featured two other performers Denise Coffey and David Jason. Jason is perhaps best known for later going on to star in...

Dick Pope, the veteran British cinematographer who worked on 11 movies with director Mike Leigh, has died Tuesday, the British Society of Cinematographers said in a statement. He was 77.
No cause of death was given, but Leigh told Indiewire that Pope had undergone “major heart surgery” before work began on Hard Truths, their last collaboration that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last month.
Pope received Oscar nominations for his work on Leigh’s Mr Turner and the mystery The Illusionist by director Neil Burger. Pope and Leigh also worked together on movies like Life Is Sweet in 1990, Naked, Topsy-Turvey, Vera Drake and Secrets & Lies.
In a 2019 interview with Film Comment, Pope talked about his decades of work with Leigh, with a reference to their movie coming out at the time, Peterloo.

British sitcoms have come thick and fast throughout the years, presenting a range of scenarios that have kept audiences hooked. Some, like The Office, have made it across the pond with a remake that suits an American setting. Others have remained with their home audiences, although that's not to say they're not as good.
As more shows have come to TV, the competition has risen, and scriptwriters have had to craft dialogue that pushes their shows to the top. Among the funniest jokes in British sitcoms are programs that date back a few decades, while others are from modern times. From mockumentaries to shows based in WW2, the funniest jokes are very familiar to audiences.
"Tough One! I Think Id Have to Say 'The Best of the Beatles'" I'm Alan Partridge
The titular character of I'm Alan Partridge is a cringe-worthy DJ from Norwich, who never knows when to keep his mouth shut.

The best TV Shows are defined by their amazing characters. Audiences have fallen in love with some of TV's greatest heroes and villains, and become captivated by their stories. A good television personality would be nothing without an exceptional actor, who imbues heart and soul into the character. Following claims to Yahoo News by Kate Jackson that she quit Charlie's Angels because her part of Sabrina Duncan was "killing" her personal life, audiences are sharing other actors who disliked their famous TV roles.
While fans may enjoy watching these incredible individuals, sometimes portraying such a popular person can take its toll on an actor's personal and professional life. The biggest stars of the small screen have become frustrated by the jobs they have undertaken, through either becoming frustrated with their characters' behavior or encountering a few problematic behind-the-scenes issues. Occasionally, assuming these major TV figures can be a chore for the talent involved.

Nicholas Lyndhurst's character in the Frasier reboot, Alan Cornwall, is the opposite of Rodney Trotter in Only Fools and Horses in one way. Whereas Rodney was often on the receiving end of Del Boy's schemes in Only Fools and Horses, in Frasier he's the one coming up with them. Lyndhurst's experience playing Rodney Trotter in Only Fools and Horses translates well to his role in Frasier, as both shows feature comedic siblings and hilarious mischief.
Nicholas Lyndhurst's Alan Cornwall is a key part of Frasier's reboot, and the character surprisingly ends up being the opposite of the actor's most celebrated role of Only Fools and Horses' Rodney Trotter. Lyndhurst was a surprising name when the Frasier reboot's cast was first announced, not because of any lack of talent but simply as he lacks name recognition in the United States. The new Frasier reboot cast fills the void left by the absence of original characters, with Nicholas Lyndhurst's Alan standing out as the best part. The tone of the show feels different with the introduction of younger characters, making it sometimes feel like a teen sitcom, but the scenes between Frasier and Alan capture the magic of the original series. Nicholas Lyndhurst's previous role in Only Fools and Horses showcases his comedic talent and chemistry with David Jason, making the show worth watching on BritBox.
Frasier has returned for a reboot series, but the best thing about the show is a new supporting actor, whose role should bring renewed attention to a classic sitcom. Since the reboot is set 20 years after Frasier's finale, a lot has changed in the radio host's life; Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) has moved back to Boston, and hardly any of the original Frasier cast and characters have returned.

Nicholas Lyndhurst will star in the newest season of Frasier. Lyndhurst became a British household name for playing Rodney in Only Fools and Horses. Kelsey Grammer says Lyndhurst is one of the funniest people he's worked with.
A spinoff of any sitcom is always risky, especially when there is a high standard to live up to. Frasier broke the mold by being as well received as its predecessor, Cheers. The titular bar was a place for a group of friends to meet and discuss their daily lives, bringing well-known stars such as Woody Harrelson and Rhea Perlman on the scene. As one of the bar-goers, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) brought a dry wit, which transferred well to his own show.

It was oddly devastating to learn that ITV’s kid’s channel Citv is to close on 1st September 2023. Many millennials and Gen Xers probably haven’t even seen a Citv show for two decades or more – besides, back in the day it wasn’t even a channel, but just a few after-school hours of programming on the regular ITV channel. So why does its closure leave us feeling like it’s the end of an era?
Because the memories of that era were so, so good, that’s why. We all remember getting home from school, grabbing a glass of squash and a Wagon Wheel and immediately flicking the TV on, and Citv (along with Cbbc – and Nickelodeon and the Disney Channel if you were well posh) kept us company until it was time to eat our spaghetti hoops and turkey twizzlers.

From Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane to Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa, some actors just can’t get away from their most famous character. Playing an iconic role in a movie or a TV show can be a gift and a curse for an actor. It launches them to stardom and often paves the way for more roles in other projects, but they’re forever associated with that character. Daniel Radcliffe will always be Harry Potter, Elijah Wood will always be Frodo Baggins, and Kristen Stewart will always be Bella Swan.
Sometimes, an actor is not only inextricably linked to their most well-known character, but gets stuck playing that role for years and years – despite trying to leave it behind somewhere along the line. Hugh Jackman gave Wolverine a perfect sendoff in Logan, but the producers managed to convince him to reprise the role in Deadpool 3. Arnold Schwarzenegger has...

Jeff Goldblum's eccentric personality, endless curiosity, and wildly free spirit give him one of the most welcoming personas in Hollywood. But, like any strong actor, the Jurassic Park star is able to disappear into roles that are nothing like who they actually are. In the largely forgotten 1990 horror gem Mister Frost, Goldblum plays a chilling personification of evil itself. As the titular character, he's a calculating menace rarely seen in the actor beyond Deep Cover’s sleazy attorney David Jason or Captain Planet’s Verminous Skumm. A serial killer with dozens of bodies buried in his backyard, Mister Frost is a man with no identity. He lives in a spacious English estate as a mysterious recluse, peering from second floor windows like an omnipresent ghost. Once Inspector Detweiler (Alan Bates) investigates a report of a dead body on Frost’s property, it quickly becomes clear that Frost is much...

Donnie Yen has shared his view on Quentin Tarantino’s controversial depiction of Bruce Lee in his latest film.
In Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a fictionalised version of the martial arts star, played by Mike Moh, is shown to be offended when Brad Pitt’s character, Cliff Both, mocks him for claiming he could beat Muhammad Ali in a fight.
It’s because of this that, in front of a crowd of people, Lee challenges Cliff to a fight, following which he is humiliated after Cliff beats him by throwing him into a car door.
At the time, Lee’s daughter, Shannon, criticised Tarantino for the “disrespectful” depiction, stating in The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m tired of white men in Hollywood mistaking his confidence, passion, and skill for hubris and therefore finding it necessary to marginalise him and his contributions.”

She added: “I’m tired of...

Bill Bailey has shared a touching tribute to Sean Lock.
The comedian posted a throwback photo of the pair out on a country walk 19 months after Lock died of cancer.
Bailey captioned the photo on Twitter: “Some days I still can’t quite believe he’s gone. Today is one of those days.”
He capped the post: “Miss you Sean old pal.”
Bailey participated in a charity walk one year after Lock’s death, raising more than £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support alongside Lee Mack and Lock’s family.
Last year, Bailey said that Lock was still cracking jokes in his final days. “Even in his last few days, we were still having a laugh, still joking, still coming up with ideas,” he said.
“We had great conversations. I brought in my guitar and sang him his favourite Johnny Cash songs.”

Kevin McKidd has dispelled rumours that he will be leaving Grey’s Anatomy, even as he’s set to co-lead Itvx’s forthcoming crime drama Six Four.
The 49-year-old Scottish actor has starred as Dr Owen Hunt in the long-running medical drama since season five (2009).
Following Ellen Pompeo’s departure from her titular role as Dr Meredith Grey in the show’s current 19th season, questions about McKidd’s future on the series arose.
However, McKidd – who is now among the show’s few remaining veteran actors – has confirmed that he’s “not going anywhere any time soon”.
“I love playing my character on Grey’s. I love what it’s done for my life and it’s like a family. Truly,” he told RadioTimes.com in a new interview.

Richard Madeley has been widely criticised after comparing climate protesters to paedophiles on Good Morning Britain.
During Tuesday (28 March) morning’s episode of the ITV show, Madeley and co-host Susanna Reid discussed recent news that a group of Britain’s top lawyers have stated that they will refuse to prosecute climate activists.
Madeley suggested that there would be a “complete collapse” of the criminal justice system if “barristers and lawyers” are not prosecuting activists.
“It doesn’t work, because they have to be completely impartial,” he said.
“If these people, these barristers and lawyers, have announced they will not prosecute – they simply won’t even get started in a court of law – someone who has glued themselves to the road as part of a Just Stop Oil protest, are they still happy to defend, say, a paedophile?” Madeley asked.

Keanu Reeves is playing the strong and silent type in John Wick: Chapter 4, with only 380 words of dialogue in the whole three-hour movie.
The fourth instalment of the action thriller franchise, which is 169 minutes long, sees Reeves speak very few lines of dialogue, almost a third of which consists of just one word, such as “yeah”.
John Wick: Chapter 4 was analysed by The Wall Street Journal, which reported that “about 10 per cent of [Wick’s lines] are featured in the movie’s trailer, which makes the hero seem almost chatty”.
Wick reportedly says more in that 2.5 minute clip than he does in the first 25 minutes of the film.
Director Chad Stahelski explained that Wick, a legendary hitman in the criminal underworld, has very few lines because Reeves “stripped out roughly half the dialogue written for his character in the initial script”.

Nathan Lane has recalled the moment that Robin Williams “swooped in” to save him from discussing his sexuality on a talk show.
The Modern Family star, 67, shared the heartwarming anecdote during an interview on Sunday Today With Willie Geist.
He and Williams were set to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show to promote their 1996 LGBTQ+ comedy The Birdcage.
Lane recalled (as per Et Canada) that he felt nervous before the show, telling host Willie Geist: “I said to Robin beforehand… ‘I’m not prepared to discuss, you know, that I’m gay on national television. I’m not ready.”
The actor said that Williams put his mind at ease, before helping him out on stage as well.
“And so then, of course she [Winfrey] was like, ‘How come you’re so good at that girlie stuff? Are you worried about being typecast?’” Lane recalled.

On the 16th of February 1993, Count Duckula bade its audience ‘Goodnight out there…whatever you are’ for the final time. For five years from 1988, Cosgrove Hall‘s creepy and clever animated kids’ show about a vegetarian vampire duck had dazzled audiences with its madcap mix of farce, physical comedy and witty word-play.
While never as broadly popular as Danger Mouse – the spoof spy caper out of which it was spun, and which also featured David Jason as the voice of its titular character – Count Duckula built a steadfast core of fans. To them, Count Duckula was The Rolling Stones to Danger Mouse‘s Beatles, a darker, edgier delight for those who prefer their cartoons with a little more bite. Whichever way you look at it, it’s hard to refute that they don’t make kids’ TV shows quite like Count Duckula anymore…

A surprising casting choice raises hopes for the upcoming Frasier reboot starring Kelsey Grammer. Remakes, reboots and revivals have existed for a long time, but the 2010s and the 2020s are incredibly crowded with them, and with good reason. Famous TV shows such as That '70s Show, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, and Roseanne come from the golden age of serialized television comedies. More than two decades is enough time to spark a sense of nostalgia in new and old fans alike.
While remakes can experiment with new actors, most reboots and revivals need the original actors to make sense. For instance, Fuller House, being a revival of an ensemble show, can get around Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's absence by focusing on the rest of the cast, introducing new characters, and skirting around Michelle's whereabouts, but a show that's centered around its titular character, like Frasier, has no choice...

It's an old adage that comedy doesn't travel well, but some shows definitely fare better than others. As a Brit, I've met many Americans with a creepy zeal for quoting sketches from "Monty Python's Flying Circus" at me. "Red Dwarf" is hugely popular where I live in the Czech Republic. And the bawdy BBC sitcom "'Allo! 'Allo!" sold to 56 countries -- the cast was reportedly greeted "like the Beatles" during a visit to Bulgaria. I once had the pleasure of dining at a pizza restaurant in the Serbian capital of Belgrade called 'Allo! 'Allo! where all the pies were named after the characters.
But one British sitcom that doesn't seem to travel well is also one of our most enduringly popular, "Only Fools and Horses." The show follows the fortunes of the Trotter family, headed by a dodgy wheeler-dealer whose dubious get-rich-quick schemes always go disastrously wrong. It aired from...

The famous Only Fools and Horses scene where Del Boy falls through the bar has been named the funniest sitcom moment of all time.
The BBC programme won the top spot in a poll revealed by TV channel Gold to celebrate 30 years of the comedy channel.
In the scene, Del Boy – played by Sir David Jason – goes to lean back on the bar that he had been resting on. However, he hadn’t noticed that the bar was a liftable slot for waiters to move through.
As he goes to lean back on it while saying “play it nice and cool son, nice and cool” the bar slot is lifted, causing him to fall straight onto the ground. Meanwhile, his friend Trigger turns around to look for him.
In a poll commissioned by Gold to determine the results, 2000 British adults and children voted for their favourite scene.

If the theatrical re-release of Steven Spielberg's Jaws is any indication, audiences are still clamoring for classic thrillers. The 1990s were pretty great for the genre, with Basic Instinct, The Sixth Sense, and The Silence Of The Lambs all coming out within the same decade. But those big titles are just the beginning, as the '90s were also responsible for some of the genre's most criminally underseen entries to date.
Many excellent films didn't receive their due credit in theaters. Audiences ignored everything from gritty cop dramas starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Laurence Fishburne to high-concept box office bombs such as Nick Of Time and Hard Rain. In other words, the decade's contributions to the thriller genre are noteworthy, even if audiences didn't pick up on their quality at first.

The owners of iconic British comedy show “Only Fools and Horses” have won a copyright battle against an “Only Fools”-themed dining show.
“Only Fools The (cushty) Dining Experience” is billed as an “interactive dining show” in which diners are subsumed into the world of the long-running TV series, which aired on BBC 1 between 1981 and 1991, with actors dressed as the characters delivering a part-scripted, part-improvized performance.
In a judgment handed down today, Deputy High Court Judge John Kimbell found in favor of Shazam Productions, a production company owned by the heirs of John Sullivan, creator of “Only Fool and Horses.”
Sullivan died in 2011 but his wife Sharon and children James, Dan and Amy, continue to run Shazam Productions as a vehicle for exploiting the “Only Fools and Horses” IP. Among the projects they have granted a license to are board games, books and a musical co-written by James Sullivan and comedian Paul Whitehouse.
