"Mistakes may always happen. And I'm not trying to hide anything." Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled A Mistake, a medical thriller from filmmaker Christine Jeffs (of Sunshine Cleaning from 2008). This premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival a few months ago, and it's getting a theatrical release in September. A gripping cinematic adaptation of the best-selling novel, A Mistake delves into the perilous aftermath of surgeon Elizabeth Taylor's split-second medical decision, unfolding a thrilling exploration of the fatal ripple effects triggered by a single human error. After a new scheme to publicly report surgeons' performance, a gifted surgeon's life is thrown into disarray as her colleagues begin to close ranks, and even her partner who is a nurse at the hospital turns her back on her. Elizabeth Banks commands the screen as distinguished surgeon Dr. Liz Taylor, grappling with turmoil both personal and professional in A Mistake. Adapting Carl Shuker’s novel, director Christine Jeffs crafts a nuanced portrait of accountability through a deceptively simple medical drama.
During a routine procedure, Taylor’s inexperienced registrar, Richard, makes a mistake with lasting consequences. A young patient named Lisa doesn’t survive complications, throwing the hospital into disarray. Taylor insists on taking full responsibility to protect Richard, unprepared for the storm ahead. Questions linger over duty and mistake, liability and lives.
Resolute in her skills, Taylor faces conflicts internally and externally as the tragedy’s effects spread. Hospital administration and the patient’s grieving parents demand answers, testing Taylor’s discipline and principles. Banks skillfully brings the star surgeon’s unraveling to life, navigating trauma with a tangible humanity. Subtleties in directing and storytelling probe complex issues of...

A Mistake explores the consequences of a single error in a heartfelt and emotional way. Christine Jeffs expertly delves into ethics and emotional accountability in the medical field. Elizabeth Banks shines in a challenging role that balances vulnerability and detachment.
Medical dramas can often be sensationalized and dramatic for the sake of stirring up conflict; A Mistake is anything but. Deftly written and directed by Christine Jeffs, who adapted Carl Shukers novel of the same name, the drama sidesteps fictional medical tropes for something that is all too real and emotional. A Mistake is thorough in examining what happens when a medical mistake occurs, and the consequences that come up because of a moment gone wrong. In doing so, Jeffs explores ethics, moral and emotional accountability with a compassionate and nuanced eye.

Elizabeth Banks has one of her best roles to date in A Mistake, the New Zealand-set medical drama that had its world premiere Friday night at the Tribeca Festival.
It might be easy to forget that Banks is one of the best actors out there, especially since she also is known these days as a director (most recently Cocaine Bear) and even game show host (Press Your Luck). But as her most recent acting work in films like The Beanie Bubble and Call Jane proves again, she has real acting chops and always has. Therefore it is nice to see her sink her teeth into a major lead role in an intense but understated and dedicated turn as a brilliant and confident surgeon whose one routine mistake during an operation spirals out of control. In the process, her life becomes a mess, making her question just exactly who she really is,...

Having completed production in the summer of the previous year, Christine Jeffs is now well-prepared to polish off her highly anticipated fourth feature film, a book-to-film adaptation titled A Mistake to high-brow auds. This marks a sixteen-year gap between her previous feature films – she began with a lot of fanfare early on with Rain (2001), Sylvia (2003) and then Sunshine Cleaning (2008). A Mistake sees Elizabeth Banks topline what was a shot in New Zealand project. Jeffs was at Sundance with her last film so it might be a fun comeback narrative for this acquisitions item.

Despite being involved in a handful of projects (including an early departure from ’21’s Every Breath You Take 2021), it’ll have been a full fifteen years since the last time she signed off on a project. Rain (2001), Sylvia (2003) and Sunshine Cleaning (2008) filmmaker Christine Jeffs began production on her fourth feature in her native New Zealand. A book-to-film adaptation, A Mistake sees Elizabeth Banks take on the complex role of someone who’s had a monkey wrench thrown at them. Not many filmmakers can boast a 99 Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes for their small-scale debut, as Alex Thompson earned with 2019’s “Saint Frances.” Fewer still follow up with an even stronger second act.
Thompson co-wrote “Rounding” with his physician brother Christopher, and their psychological freakout is possessed of an almost visionary intensity. He’s described this film as inspired by the B-movie thrillers he watched on TV as a kid, but that significantly undersells its lingering power.
Indeed, the B-movie moments — ominous threats, manifested demons — are the weaker spots in an otherwise taut and terrifying emotional nightmare.

It’s been over a decade since director Christine Jeffs has released a film. Her last work, “Sunshine Cleaning,” which debuted at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival to pretty positive reviews. That film saw early work from two of the biggest actresses working today, Emily Blunt and Amy Adams. Well, now, more than a decade later, Jeffs is working on a new film, “Every Breath You Take,” and she’s found herself another strong cast.

After a number of TV appearances early in her career, Amy Adams has made a glorious return to television in HBO’s eight-episode limited series “Sharp Objects.” The series is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who won an Emmy for directing another heralded HBO mini, “Big Little Lies.” In this project, Adams portrays troubled reporter Camille Preaker, who just having been released from a psychiatric hospital for harming herself, returns to her hometown to investigate a double murder.
Adams, of course, is most known for her film work, having earned two Golden Globe Awards (from seven nominations), won a Screen Actors Guild Award (also from seven nominations) and has been nominated for five Academy Awards. Those Oscar nominations have been for “Junebug” (2005), “Doubt” (2008), “The Fighter” (2010), “The Master” (2012) and “American Hustle” (2013).

The British actress has received some of the best reviews of her career for the film “A Quiet Place,” which is directed by and co-stars her real-life husband John Krasinski (“The Office”). As a pregnant wife who helps to lead her family to safety by trying to outwit alien creatures by not making a sound, Blunt offers a nearly silent performance with acting registering mostly with her face, a bold move that could result in awards attention later in the year.

Gwyneth Paltrow silver dress on the Oscars' Red Carpet Gwyneth Paltrow at the Academy Awards Donning a shining silver dress, Gwyneth Paltrow arrives at the 2011 Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Paltrow's latest movie, Country Strong, was up for a Best Song Oscar. It lost to the Toy Story 3 ditty "We Belong Together," by Randy Newman. More than a decade ago, Gwyneth Paltrow took home the Best Actress Oscar for John Madden's Shakespeare in Love (1998), a romantic comedy-drama also featuring Joseph Fiennes (as William Shakespeare), Judi Dench, Geoffrey Rush, and this year's Best Actor Oscar winner, Colin Firth (The King's Speech). Paltrow's (moderately) gender-bending Shakespeare in Love heroine remains her only Oscar-nominated performance to date. Directed by Shana Feste, Country Strong fared decently at the U.S. box office, but not as well as some had expected. Besides Gwyneth Paltrow, the cast includes...

In Reaching For The Moon, Bruno Barreto navigates handsomely the love story between the Pulitzer prize-winning American poet Elizabeth Bishop and the Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares, who designed Flamengo Park in Rio de Janeiro, making a Central Park out of a landfill with street lamps that recreate the moonlight.
In my conversation with Barreto on his poetic film, we discussed how Deborah Kerr, co-starring with Cary Grant in Leo McCarey's An Affair to Remember, is channeled by Miranda Otto and how Sydney Pollack's Out Of Africa made for the perfect pitch, even without Meryl Streep or Robert Redford. Barreto explained that Jane Campion's Bright Star on Keats and Christine Jeffs's Sylvia on Plath were not the way to go in the portrayal of Elizabeth Bishop and why Stephen Daldry's The Hours has the right intricacy.

Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to worthwhile titles currently streaming on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we offer alternatives to The Iron Lady, We Need to Talk About Kevin and Beauty and the Beast 3D.
In theaters this week, one of Disney’s biggest hits faces off against a brutal tale of motherhood’s dark side and a poetic portrait of problematic politician. Simply put, there’s some truly sensational cinema to be had. But if this won’t satisfy your film-seeing thirsts, we’ve got you covered with with a selection of bold biopics, alluring adventures, and dauntless dramas.
Meryl Streep makes her bid for Oscar gold playing one of Britain’s most controversial contemporary political figures: Britain’s first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. Phyllida Lloyd directs. [Full Review]

To cast Paul Rudd at the center of your comedy, as My Idiot Brother casting director Jeanne McCarthy chose to do, is a solid start. To surround him with the likes of Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Rashida Jones, and Adam Scott approaches brilliance. As such, you can trust that the remaining roles — now filled by Hugh Dancy, Kathryn Hahn, Shirley Knight, and Janet Montgomery — are in good hands.

While most Americans (and the world) are struggling financially, Hollywood had a great year. Box office revenue topped $10.6 billion, up 10 percent from 2008 (according to Hollywood.com) and many of the year end stories have talked about women both at the box office and as directors. Here what IndieWIRE had to say: This was truly a landmark year for women and film. Female-centered options dominated the indie landscape, with "Precious," the year's top grossing specialty release, leading the way. The film may have been directed by a man, but it featured an almost entirely female cast and most certainly raked in its box office due in large part to female audiences hungry for options. And beyond "Precious," there were surprisingly many. Christine Jeffs' "Sunshine Cleaning," Lone Scherfig's "An Education," Jane Campion's "Bright...

Produced largely by the same team as the delightful Little Miss Sunshine, this is never as successful or as funny as that surprise hit, but does have the performances of Amy Adams and Emily Blunt to commend it. Not only are these strong and empathetic, but they are playing very much against type: the usually imperious Blunt is the family screw-up, while Adams, sunny, ever-optimistic star of Junebug, is the sensible sister, putting together a new family business cleaning up crime scenes. Director Christine Jeffs, best known for Sylvia, juggles the dark humour and wistfulness with skill at times, but the ending is jarringly unconvincing.

Abbie Cornish, of Bright Star, for fave breakout star; Christine Jeffs' Sunshine Cleaning, Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and Jane Campion's Bright Star for fave independent films; Catherine Hardwicke's Twilight as fave film; and the Barrymore-directed Whip It's Ellen Page, Eve and Kristen Wiig as best onscreen pairing. Not to mention the Charlaine Harris-created True Blood, the Eliza Dushku-produced Dollhouse, and female-watched Ghost Whisperer as fave sci-fi/fantasy shows. Chicago – Christine Jeffs’ “Sunshine Cleaning” has its ups and downs, its pros and cons, but it’s worth a look, now on Blu-Ray and DVD, for one of the most delightful, multi-faceted performances of the year from one of the better actresses of her generation. What Amy Adams delivers in “Sunshine Cleaning” is her most interesting turn since “Junebug”. Even with an average Blu-Ray release, Adams makes “Cleaning” worth at least a rental on its own.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 Despite what Adams (and, to a lesser extent, Emily Blunt) bring to “Sunshine Cleaning,” it’s pretty undeniable that the screenplay could have used another polish. The film fluctuates wildly in tone and overall quality and feels at times like it was practically created by a computer designed to make a “Sundance comedy”.

- Among today's DVD releases we have Christine Jeff's Sunshine Cleaning, a film that after it received a mildly warm reception at Sundance was expected to die a quick theatrical death - the pic took almost a full year to find a distribution deal. Overture Films came into the portrait and defied the odds with this quirky indie film: not only did it record some of the best box office numbers for an indie film this year, but it gathered plenty of traction from the batch of critics who didn't go to the festival. The "Fancy Corn" clip below represents some of the film's sweeter spots that co-exists with the film's darker offbeat humor elements. Most times, we read our comics and watch our movies and television programs and come in at the beginning or during an act of gruesome violence. Often, we then see the crime scene investigators do their thing and then leave. But what becomes of the crime scene afterwards?
Answering that question is the moving Sunshine Cleaning, an independent film starring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. The well-received film comes out on DVD this Tuesday from Anchor Bay Entertainment.
Adams plays Rose Lorkowski, a single parent stuck in a dead end job, trying to raise her young son. Raised by her failed salesman father (Alan Arkin), it fell to Rose to raise her younger sister Norah. Rose was once on top of the world, captain of the cheerleading team, but there she is, a decade-plus later and she’s still sleeping with the quarterback (Steve Zahn), despite his being married to someone else.

Anyone who notices .From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine. proudly displayed over the equally sunny title .Sunshine Cleaning. will know exactly what their in for here: a quirky, festival-brewed dramedy that coasts on self-conscious realism. Amy Adams and Emily Blunt do their part but it.s a little been there, done that for me. Director Christine Jeffs who is coming off of .Rain. and .Sylvia. probably won.t make the transition to mainstream here with an uncomfortable tone and juggling of subplots presented by Megan Holly.s debut script. An idea of haphazard sisters battling their various woes through a crime-scene cleanup business is good, but its execution ultimately has little to say despite overeager sentimental button-pushing. However, fans...
