Lukas Nelson Says Promise of the Real ‘Had Become Neil Young’s Band’
Image
When Lukas Nelson issued his album American Romance earlier this summer, it marked the first release under his own name. Up until then, the singer, songwriter, and guitarist fronted the group Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, which eventually went on to back Neil Young for nearly five years.

The band announced they were going their separate ways, at least for a little while, in 2024. “After 15 unforgettable years, Promise of the Real has decided to take a well-earned hiatus, and begin a new creative chapter in all of our lives,...

Marcus King, Charlie Starr Are Keeping Toy Caldwell’s Legacy Alive With New Supergroup

Paul T. Riddle knows that he’s prone to shed a tear or two when the right moment strikes. He’s the first to admit he gets choked up during soft-hearted TV advertisements or when “Silent Night” comes across grocery store speakers during the holiday season.

So, on a Monday morning when Riddle, a longtime drummer and co-founding member of the Marshall Tucker Band, called to talk about his late bandmate Toy Caldwell, he got a little misty-eyed.

“Mine and Toy’s thing was the music,” says Riddle, a soft-spoken...

Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson Charm Hollywood Bowl With Favorites, Deep Cuts at Outlaw Music Festival Tour Stop
Image
Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson turned the Hollywood Bowl into a haven for Americana and country on Friday night, as the two legends brought the Outlaw Music Festival back to the storied venue for the second year in a row.

Dylan went on just as dusk settled, and the stage lit up like a noir rodeo, revealing Dylan’s signature piano. He and his band — dressed in black like outlaw undertakers — opened with a swaggering “Things Have Changed.”

The stage setup was simple: An image of a peaceful mountain lake backdrop that resembled a fancy water bottle label, blending well with the surrounding Hollywood Hills, and a crowd full of cowboy hats and rhinestones.

Opening for Dylan and Nelson Friday night were bluegrass stars Sierra Hull and Billy Strings, while upcoming Outlaw Fest 2025 tour stops will rotate in acts like Sheryl Crow, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, and Nathaniel Rateliff. Outlaw lineups...

Who Won Coachella? Lady Gaga, Charli Xcx, Post Malone Top the Best of 2025 List
Image
With the first weekend of Coachella 2025 now in the history books, clear winners have emerged among the dozens of acts who performed, including history-making headliners and small-font breakthroughs.

Best Overall Set: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s headlining set on Friday night was an immediate all-timer: the Mother Monster had created an opera house in the middle of the desert teeming with her own inner demons and mind-blowing choreography that utilized not just the main stage but seemingly every inch of the catwalk and B-stage as well. It was a performance for the ages, and erases her fine-but-not-phenomenal previous performance from 2017 altogether.

Lady Gaga performs at the Coachella Stage.

Best Non-Main Stage Set: Gustavo Dudamel

When LA Phil conductor Gustavo Dudamel was revealed on the lineup, anyone who’s been paying attention to orchestral moments at Coachella knew to expect something special. In the past, both Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer...

We Now Know When 'Family Guy' Season 23 Debuts
Image
After a delay, Family Guy is finally returning, with Season 23 premiering on Sunday Feb. 16, 2025. It will debut at 8 pm Et / Pt, which has long been The Simpsons' time slot, per TheWrap. Rounding out the two-hour block will be Grimsburg Season 2, The Great North Season 5, and Krapopolis Season 2.

The new episode will be a riff on Top Gun, with Peter playing Maverick as he mourns the death of Goose (Joe). His relationship with Charlie (Lois) is explored along with his son, Rooster (Chris). Given Family Guy's winning record with spoofs on beloved movies, expect this one to be a classic.

The show recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, despite being canceled twice since its series premiere on Jan. 31, 1999.

When Does 'The Simpsons' Return?

Just a few weeks back, it was reported that The Simpsons would lose its coveted Sundays at 8 pm Et / Pt time slot, and would be moved to Wednesday nights.

The Highwaymen Loved America So Much, They Weren’t Afraid to Criticize It
Image
A video of the Highwaymen appearing on a talk show in 1991 has been making the rounds on social media since the 2024 presidential election, not because of any song they sang, but because of what they said. At least three members of the country supergroup called out the good ol’ U.S.A., courageously pointing out, in the words of Willie Nelson, that “There’s a lot of things wrong with this country.”

That Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson — the fourth Highwayman, Waylon Jennings, didn’t weigh in — dared to...

Kris Kristofferson Fans Need to Watch The Musician in This 1970s Drama
Image
When country music legend Kris Kristofferson passed away on Sept. 28, 2024, most of the public tributes to him understandably spotlighted his successful career as a trailblazing and award-winning singer-songwriter. Even as he was contributing to the hugely influential "outlaw movement" of country music alongside fellow icons like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings in the 1970s, Kristofferson set out to prove that his talents extended beyond the music world. To that end, Kristofferson embarked on a successful career as a Hollywood actor, starring in films like the 1972 cult classic crime drama Cisco Pike and the 1976 remake of the acclaimed musical A Star is Born, which earned him a Golden Globe.

Perhaps the most impressive display of Kristofferson's acting chops came in the 1974 romantic comedy-drama Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, directed by Martin Scorsese. The film centers on single mother Alice Hyatt (Burstyn) as she leaves her home in Socorro, New Mexico after...

Family Guy 2024 Holiday Episode Review: The 25th Anniversary Holiday Special Does Nothing To Stand Out
Image
The 2024 Family Guy holiday special, "The Gift of the White Guy," delivers the same irreverent comedy the show has become known for, with nothing very special about it. That is not to say the episode is bad, it has several laugh-out-loud moments, but in a series with well over 400 episodes, it becomes a challenge just to improve on itself. And with plenty of holiday specials in the past 25 years, this episode doesn't break the mold.

Family Guy is an animated series following the eccentric Griffin family. Led by bumbling patriarch Peter and long-suffering Lois, the family includes the sadistic baby Stewie, unpopular teenager Meg, dim-witted Chris, and Brian, their talking dog. The show explores their outlandish adventures in the fictional town of Quahog.

Cast Ace Frehley, Waylon Jennings, Arif Zahir, Walter Murphy, Ron Jones, Richard Appel, Gary Beach, Abe Vigoda, Peter Frampton, Mary Kay Bergman, Alec Sulkin, Seth MacFarlane, Julia Sweeney,...

CMA Awards 2024 Winners List: Morgan Wallen Is Mia but Wins Entertainer of the Year for First Time; Chris Stapleton Nabs Three
Image
Morgan Wallen went into the 58th annual CMA Awards as the leading contender, with seven nominations. He won only one of those, but it was the prize he most would have wanted: entertainer of the year. Or we can assume so, since Wallen was the only no-show among the night’s big nominees.

The 2024 CMAs’ other multiple winners were Chris Stapleton, who picked up three trophies, and show co-host Lainey Wilson (last year’s entertainer of the year winner), who got two.

Others being awarded honors on the ABC telecast included Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney, Old Dominion and — in perhaps the night’s biggest upset — Brooks & Dunn, who won duo of the year for the 15 time… the first time in 18 years.

According to the Country Music Association, Stapleton and Brooks & Dunn are now tied for the most CMA wins ever, with 19 each.

Among those who were shut out were...

The Highwaymen: The Fights and Friendship of Country’s Great Supergroup
Image
This story was originally published May 20, 2016, on rollingstone.com.

When the Highwaymen recorded “Desperados Waiting for a Train,” written by visionary songwriter Guy Clark, who died in 2016, the supergroup of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson landed on their most poignant song. While Jimmy Webb’s “Highwayman” may have been the foursome’s signature, Clark’s “Desperados,” released on their 1985 debut album, dovetailed with their own outlaw legacy: that of aging icons who indulged the young guns their bravado while still beating them on the draw. A Walk Through ‘MacArthur Park’: Jimmy Webb Tells the History of an Odd Pop Classic That Found New Life as the Musical Climax of ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’
Image
Here’s one cake that didn’t get left out too long in the rain: the eternal pop pastry that is “MacArthur Park.” The song’s epic length and unusual structure haven’t kept it from turning into a decades-spanning perennial, one that is just finding yet another new life as a result of its extensive use in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which scores a full-on movie-musical climax with actor-singer Richard Harris’ original 1968 version before switching to Donna Summer’s disco remake for the end credits.

Jimmy Webb is one of the indisputably greatest songwriters of all time, known for undying classics like “Wichita Lineman,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Galveston” and “Highwayman.” “MacArthur Park” is undoubtedly a more polarizing song than those others, but more music fans than not will break into a grin upon hearing the start of a seven-minute, suite-like epic that likens a failed romance to...

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
Here Are All the Songs in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
“Deadpool & Wolverine” appears to be playing with time a little bit, with the appearance of the Time Variance Authority, so perhaps it makes sense that the soundtrack for the film is filled with throwbacks.

In theaters now, the film officially brings Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) into the MCU, as the two pair up — begrudgingly, in the case of Wolverine — to save Wade’s world.

Surprisingly, there’s no Wham! on this soundtrack, but it does get pretty meta, bringing in a song from one of Hugh Jackman’s musicals. And, before you get excited, no, that’s not Taylor Swift on the soundtrack confirming any rumors she might be in the film.

Her song is called “You Belong With Me,” not “You Belong to Me.” This one is a classic though.

Here are all the songs in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
