The B-Side Ep. 162 – Clint Eastwood (with Mitchell Beaupre)
Image
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

Today we discuss Clint Eastwood, the director and the movie star. Our B-Sides are Breezy, White Hunter Black Heart, Blood Work, Flags of Our Fathers, and The Mule. Our guest is the impeccable Mitchell Beaupre, Managing Editor at Letterboxd.

We talk about Clint’s Casper cameo and how that was probably the first thing all three of us saw him in a movie, John Wayne’s disdain for Eastwood’s on-screen persona, his uncanny direction of actors as well as his smart casting of actors. Often, if Clint is in one of his own movies, he will surround himself with talent as good (if not better) than himself.

There’s significant appreciation for his underseen Honkytonk Man, there’s honest discussion...

“He was 12 years older”: Uma Thurman Knew Her Mistake Marriage With Gary Oldman Had to End
Image
Actress Uma Thurman is one of the most influential actresses in the industry. She is often hailed as filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s muse, as she has been a part of his projects, including Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill: Volumes 1 and 2. Tarantino wrote the part of assassin Beatrix Kiddo especially for the actress and gave her joint credits for the character.

Uma Thurman, who started working at a very young age, surprised everyone when it was revealed that she was lawfully wedded to actor Gary Oldman. But what’s more surprising was the duration of their marriage [it was the shortest for both] and how they believed that it was a mistake.

Uma Thurman opens up about her marriage to Slow Horses actor Gary Oldman

There is no accurate information about how Uma Thurman and Gary Oldman met, but if rumors are to be believed, Sean Penn introduced them to each other when she visited the sets...

Gary Oldman Starred in 1 of the Best Gangster Movies Ever Made (But It Was Overshadowed by GoodFellas)

Quick LinksWhat is the Story of State of Grace? How Goodfellas Overshadowed the Film During Its Release (and Still Continues To Do So)Gary Oldman Delivered One of His Career-Best Performances in State of Grace

Gary Oldman is considered to be one of the greatest actors currently living and for very good reason. Fans of DC Comics are sure to remember him for his turn as Commissioner Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and Harry Potter fans will immediately recognize him for his role as Sirius Black. He's also been celebrated worldwide for his chameleon-like ability to disappear into any role he touches, having won an Oscar for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. One of his more underrated performances happens to also come from one of his more underrated films. When State of Grace was released in 1992, it was a critical success, garnering a "certified...

30 Years Ago, Tom Cruise Made His Directorial Debut with 'Fallen Angels'
Image
While some question the power of celebrities to guarantee box office success, there is one actor whose name value seldom wavers in getting people into the theaters. Tom Cruise has become one of the world's most recognized and revered actors, with an impressive filmography of fan favorites throughout the decades, including Risky Business (1983), Top Gun (1986), Mission Impossible (1996), Jerry Maguire (1996), Minority Report (2002), and the list goes on and on up to the modern era with massive blockbuster his like Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and fan favorites like Edge of Tomorrow (2014).

His success as an actor has remained prevalent for decades, despite controversies involving his association with the Church of Scientology and some oddball interviews (who can forget Cruise jumping on Oprah Winfrey's couch in 2005?). Still, Cruise remains best known as an actor who is very much in charge of his career trajectory. That is what makes his first and last directed work such an oddity.

Dwayne Johnsons Divisive Sports Movie Gridiron Gang Is Now Free to Stream
Image
Dwayne Johnson is now one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood thanks to the likes of the Jumanji franchise, the Fast and Furious franchise, and more. However, this was not always the case, with the former WWE star having starred in several projects as he slowly climbed the ladder up to the tippy top of the A-list. One such movie was the sports drama Gridiron Gang, which is now available to stream for free.

Released back in 2006, the sports movie was directed by Phil Joanou and finds Dwayne Johnson in the lead alongside Xzibit, Kevin Dunn, Leon Rippy and L. Scott Caldwell. Loosely based on the inspirational true story of Camp Kilpatrick, a juvenile detention camp in L.A. County, and the creation of the camp's American football team, the Kilpatrick Mustangs, in the 1990 season. Gridiron Gang is now streaming for free on Tubi, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

Knight and Day: What Happened to this Underrated Tom Cruise Flick?
Image
A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!

Knight and Day began, as with so many Hollywood screenplays, as a spec script, or a work that is uncommissioned but written in hopes of selling it to a studio (think...

3rd Rock From The Sun's 3D Episode Was Meant To Send A Message To The Network
Image
It's common for any long-running television sitcom to eventually "jump the shark." But to do it in 3D? That takes some real moonstones, and the cast of "3rd Rock from the Sun" did it in sublime fashion.

After its first season, "3rd Rock from the Sun" was nominated for three Emmys, with star John Lithgow winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. By the show's second season, that number increased to eight nominations and five wins, including a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Despite the early success of the show, NBC decided that the final episode of season 2 needed to be big -- so big that they brought in film director Phil Joanou to direct 16 minutes of 3D sequences for a two-episode special entitled "A Nightmare on Dick Street, Parts I & II."

Although the show was known for its eccentric nature, the creative team didn't share NBC's enthusiasm over the idea.

‘Flight Of The Navigator’ Female Reboot In The Works At Disney With Bryce Dallas Howard Directing & Producing
Image
Disney Studios is developing a reimagining of its 1986 sci-fi live action feature Flight of the Navigator with a female lead, a project that Bryce Dallas Howard is attached to direct and produce for Disney+.

The original movie, starring Joey Cramer, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Veronica Cartwright, follows a boy who travels eight years into the future from 1978 and has an adventure with an intelligent, wisecracking alien ship, named Max. Paul Reubens provided the voice of Max in the film which was released in late July 1986 grossing an uninflated $18.6M at the domestic B.O. Randal Kleiser, who had directed Paramount’s big hit Grease, and The Blue Lagoon, directed the original Flight of the Navigator off a screenplay by Michael Burton and Phil Joanou.

John Swartz, Howard’s partner at her production company Nine Muses, and Justin Springer are also producing.

The project reteams Howard with Disney+ as a director,...

Fist Fight – Review
A showdown’s a’ comin’! Not on the main street of Dodge City, but at the multiplex once again. The final throw down between the hero and villain has been a staple of cinema since its earliest days, mainly in action films and primarily the western. There have been countless screen versions of that infamous incident , the gunfight at the O.K. Corral (the most famous being the Kirk Douglas/Burt Lancaster 1950’s classic) . This most likely inspired many other “oaters”, the most celebrated being the iconic 1952 High Noon (which garnered an Oscar for star Gary Cooper). It’s set in real-time as the clock ticks to 12, while Will Kane readies himself for the arrival of the Miller gang. We’ve seen this plot used in many other genres, providing extra excitement to the final acts of every movie hero’s exploits from Rocky to Bond to Batman. But it...

'Fist Fight': Film Review
Phil Joanou
Phil Joanou's 1987 teen comedy Three O'Clock High, while not a remake of High Noon, signaled its heritage and its comic anxiety in the title: The solemnity of Fred Zinnemann's midday-showdown Western was transformed into something sounding like the name of a high school, with the ticking-clock deadline now timed to the final school bell — three more hours of desperation than Gary Cooper had to endure.

Richie Keen's Fist Fight, which isn't a remake of either film, makes a considerably blander promise to viewers: There's going to be a fight. With fists.

If that's an attempt to manage expectations,...

February 2016 VOD Releases Include Southbound, Martyrs, All Hallows’ Eve 2
With February being a short month, genre fans only have a handful of horror and sci-fi arriving on VOD to look forward to over the next few weeks. One of my own most anticipated movies for 2016, the horror anthology Southbound, makes its VOD debut on February 9th, courtesy of The Orchard. For those of curious about two of the more buzzed-about remakes in some time – Martyrs and Cabin Fever – both films arrive on VOD on February 2nd and February 12th respectively.

Other notable titles hitting VOD this February include All Hallow’s Eve 2, Convergence, The Veil, Uncaged and Riddle Room.

All Hallows' Eve 2 (Rlj Entertainment) – February 2nd

Alone on Halloween, a young woman finds a mysterious VHS tape on her doorstep—a tape that shows a series of gruesome and ghastly tales that appear to be all too real. But these terrifying glimpses of damned souls are not the only horrors that stalk her.

The Veil Review
I’ve always thought that Thomas Jane deserved more frequent zany roles, which The Veil certainly provides for him – it’s just a shame his twisted charisma will most likely go unnoticed. Phil Joanou’s cultish thriller (penned by Robert Ben Garant) is the latest Blumhouse indie to be unceremoniously dumped straight to Netflix, like last year’s backlog purge that included Mockingbird, Mercy, and a few other buried thrillers. But it’s not without reason, as questions of quality are answered within the film’s dreary first few scenes, even with Jessica Alba leading the show. Spiffy cultist ideas shine through, mixed with a supernatural story, but Joanou’s vision is the blandest shade of grey imaginable – or, in this case, visibly seen as a color-blocking filter in every shot.

Abla plays a filmmaker named Maggie Price, who returns to where her FBI agent father stumbled upon the largest mass-suicide in history,...

Lift The Veil and Stare into the Abyss: A Film Review
Director: Phil Joanou. Writer: Robert Ben Garant. Cast: Jessica Alba, Thomas Jane, Lily Rabe and Shannon Woodward. The Veil is a haunted story, from Blumhouse Productions. The film takes place inside a Jim Jones' cult. But, in this film, there is life after suicide. Thomas Jane (The Punisher) plays Jim Jacobs, the cult leader. Jessica Alba (The Eye) plays a documentarian, in search of closure. A creepy cabin invites viewers into a horrifying time, while the film offers at least two decent jump scares. As well, Jane provides a great performance as the curtain falls on many of the characters. In the end, The Veil is a decent horror film, which draws viewers into its growing darkness. The setting focuses on a small, dilapidated cabin. This type of setting has been used many times before, in horror. This time, in this remote locale, the characters try to piece together...

Shooting a Movie in 25 Days for Blumhouse: Phil Joanou on The Veil
One of the best American suspense films of the last ten years sneaks onto VOD, iTunes, and Netflix streaming this week as director Phil Joanou’s The Veil arrives courtesy of Universal and Blumhouse. A movie in the subgenre that James Mangold once referred to as “the cinema of unease,” it’s a slow burn horror flick that skillfully utilizes the Blumhouse production model (which yielded The Purge, Sinister, and The Visit) to tell a slightly more ambitious – though no less unsettling – tale. Working from a subtle, complex, and ruthlessly original script by Robert Ben Garant, Joanou tells the story […]...

Jessica Alba Will Join Thomas Jane In The Veil
Jessica Alba is currently in talks to join Thomas Jane in an upcoming micro-budget horror film titled The Veil. Coming to us from Blumhouse Productions, the Phil Joanou-directed film will focus on Heaven’s Veil, a religious cult whose members suddenly take their own lives. The only survivor of the massacre is a five-year-old, who returns to the compound as an adult with a documentary crew (led by Alba’s character) intent on finding out what happened.

Scripted by Robert Ben Garant, who also wrote Jessabelle for Blum, and set to start shooting in April, The Veil will mark the second collaboration for Alba and the producer, as the actress also has a role in Blum’s upcoming thriller Stretch, with Patrick Wilson and Ed Helms.

For those who don’t know, Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions banner have been taking the horror world by storm over the past few years.

Will Jessica Alba Be Donning Phil Joanou's Veil?
Things look to be coming together fairly quickly for The Veil, a new Blumhouse Productions project directed by Phil Joanou (U2: Rattle and Hum) that already has Thomas Jane attached to star. Currently in talks for the film is Jessica Alba, and an April shoot is planned.

The Veil is written by Robert Ben Garant (Jessabelle), and the story springs from the real-world headlines of religious cults and mass suicides. It begins 30 years ago, when members of a religious cult known as Heaven's Veil take their own lives.

The truth remains buried deep in the memory of the sole survivor, a five-year-old girl, who returns to the compound with a documentary crew as an adult. They soon discover something that is far more terrifying than anything they could have imagined.

Per THR's Heat Vision Blog, Alba would play the filmmaker who accompanies the survivor back to the compound to investigate what really happened.

Jessica Alba is in talks to star in The Veil alongside Thomas Jane for producer Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions.

The story centers on a religious cult called Heaven's Veil, whose members all took their own lives in a mass suicide several years ago. The only survivor was a five-year-old girl who, as an adult, returns to the cult's compound looking for answers. Jessica Alba is playing a documentary director who accompanies the young woman on her journey. No details were given for Thomas Jane's character.

Phil Joanou (Gridiron Gang, The Punsher: Dirty Laundry) is directing from a screenplay by Robert Ben Garant. The Mist Star Thomas Jane Checks Out Blumhouses The Veil
Jason Blum's Blumhouse is becoming something of a modern day Hammer Horror production company. The constant flow of horror projects from the Blum is quite impressive. Some don't quite hit the mark whilst others are superbly crafted little horror treats. 'The Veil' is the latest small budget genre production that is set to revolve around the theme of cults and mass suicides. And the project, to be helmed by Phil Joanou ('Final Analysis'), has landed its leading man in the form of Thomas Jane ('The Mist'). Joanou will helm from a script provided by 'Hell Baby' star and co-writer Robert Ben Garant whilst Universal are poised to distribute....

Thomas Jane, Eva Longoria Join Horror Pics
Thomas Jane and Eva Longoria have signed on for two new projects from microbudget horror producing magnate Jason Blum.

Jane will re-team with his "The Punisher: Dirty Laundry" unauthorised Marvel short film director Phil Joanou's for "The Veil" at Universal Pictures. Filming begins in April.

"Reno 911" co-creator Robert Ben Garant penned the script which begins three decades ago when the members of the religious cult Heaven's Veil commit suicide.

The sole survivor, a then five-year-old girl, is taken back to the compound thirty years later with a documentary crew to determine what really happened - the truth turns out to be far more terrifying.

Before that starts though, Blum is getting to work on "Visions" which "Desperate Housewives" star Longoria has joined. The story follows a pregnant woman (Isla Fisher) who moves with her husband to the countryside where she is plagued by visions of a sinister hooded figure.

Marvelous Da7e #27: Don’t Be Labeouf’d
Welcome to Issue 27 of ‘The Marvelous Da7e!’

Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies…Or Is It?

This week: A bad comic fan film is in the news for blatant theft. Let’s not let that tarnish fan films.

This Shia Labeouf thing is getting weird.

Mr. Labeouf, for those who don’t know, released a short film that ended up being a word-for-word visual version of Daniel Clowes’ 2007 comic, “Justin M. Damiano”, just with names and a few props changed. No where in the film is Clowes acknowledged and the artist and his editor are super-pissed at the plagiarism at hand.

This is all a little surreal, because I had seen this comic pop up on Tumblr during Cannes when Shia Labeouf’s short HowardCantour.com had premiered. Someone had blogged it with a caption like: ust saw a live action version of this.

The top 25 underappreciated films of 1991
Odd List Simon Brew Ryan Lambie 26 Sep 2013 - 07:09

The year 1991 is the focus for our latest underappreciated films list, which includes dramas, thrillers, and a smattering of horror...

Ah, 1991. The year Robert Patrick ran after cars in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and Kevin Costner grew a spectacular mullet for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. But outside the top ten blockbuster list, there lies an entire world of other, less celebrated films to discover.

Some of the movies on this list have been included because they were overlooked in theatres, while others have been added because they were unfairly dismissed by critics. One or two others were modest successes, but (whisper it) we decided to include them anyway because we really, really like them.

So here, for your delectation, is our pick of 25 underappreciated films from 1991.

25. Deceived

You think Goldie Hawn, you tend to think comedy, or her Oscar-nominated turn in Private Benjamin.
