Netflix’s Hitmakers presents itself as a peek behind the music industry’s most guarded curtain. The series assembles a dozen of the professionals who write the songs that define the pop charts, individuals with credits for artists like Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, and BTS. The format places these creators in a series of opulent “songwriting camps.” We follow them to luxurious estates in the Bahamas, Nashville, and Cabo San Lucas, where a life of private transport and high-end accommodations is the norm.
Their task, however, is far from a vacation. Divided into small teams, they operate under intense pressure, given just hours to conceive and record demos. The objective is to craft a new hit for a specific client, and the list is formidable: John Legend, the rising star Shaboozey, Blackpink’s Lisa, and the icon Usher are all waiting for the perfect track.

Songwriters are the under-appreciated, uber-talented engine of the pop industrial complex, churning out beloved hits for artists and doing so with little spotlight, limited fanfare, and too often these days, not very much money.
But in Netflix’s Hitmakers, the songwriter takes center stage, teasing the chance for a rare inside look at how your favorite songs got made, the people who created them and how this grinding but glitzy industry actually works. Unfortunately, the show doesn’t deliver on its promise.
Produced by Selling Sunset creator Adam Divello and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., Hitmakers forgoes the in-depth docuseries route for a reality show approach. The result is a Selling Sunset-ification of the craft, placing a dozen top songwriters — Jenna Andrews, Harv, JHart, Tommy Brown, Whitney Phillips, Trey Campbell, Ferras, Stephen Kirk, Sevyn Streeter, Ben Johnson and the duo Nova Wav — in lavish digs in the Bahamas, Nashville...

It’s pretty indisputable that the most crucial part of the music industry — the songwriter — is the most overlooked and, in most cases, shortchanged. With the rising dominance of streaming over the past decade and the looming threat of AI to the art form, songwriters have faded even further into the background as royalty rates have remained shockingly low, and the chance of landing in the credits of a certified hit has diminished as music has favored a quantity market.
“Hitmakers,” Netflix’s new unscripted reality series focusing on a dozen songwriters behind chart-toppers for Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and BTS — and has no relation to Variety’s long-established music event and cover package of the same name — barely addresses that elephant in the studio across its six-episode arc. Instead, it plays as a glossy fantasy focusing on the glitzy side of the hit machine: songwriting camps, or luxury gatherings...

Fifty years after its release, a classic Gene Hackman Western epic is coming to streaming — for free. Bite the Bullet, Richard Brooks' ode to the Old West, is coming to Tubi; it was one of seven Westerns Hackman made over the course of his career. The film, which currently holds a 75% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, will premiere on the free, ad-supported streamer on August 1.
The movie was directed by Brooks, who'd previously helmed In Cold Blood, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Elmer Gantry. He wanted Hackman to lead the picture, but he was already signed to star in French Connection II; after Brooks considered Paul Newman and Burt Reynolds, 20th Century Fox agreed to push back French Connection II to let Hackman star in the Western epic. The film contains one of Hackman's favorite scenes: in an interview with Film Comment in 1988, Hackman said, "I had a...

Toronto — Social-media phenomenon Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor has signed on to portray U.S. sprint icon Carl Lewis in “Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story,” a six-episode satirical miniseries now filming in Toronto for GameTV and Paramount+ Canada. Created by BAFTA-winner Anthony Q. Farrell and produced by New Metric Media with Bay Mills Studios, the project revisits the infamous 1988 Olympic doping scandal through the eyes of Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson, played by Shamier Anderson.
Producers say principal photography began on 20 June and the series is set to premiere in early 2026, marking one of the first collaborations in which a domestic streamer and a linear network will share a simultaneous launch window. The creative team includes executive producers Farrell, Anderson, Stephan James and New Metric chief Mark Montefiore, with directors R.T. Thorne and Cory Bowles aiming for a tone that mixes sports biopic with irreverent comedy.

By the time they announced their first break-up in 2013, New Jersey rockers My Chemical Romance had established themselves as one of the biggest and most influential emo bands on the planet. Indeed, if you're not into the whole emo thing, it's probably their name that springs to mind if the genre ever comes up. For a group who positioned themselves as outsiders, they made a pretty big impact on the mainstream, too; the anthemic "Welcome to the Black Parade" reached Number 2 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts in the U.K. and New Zealand. With their gothic stylings and dark topics including cancer and suicide, My Chemical Romance came to define the gloomy look and attitude of emo culture for a new generation, even though the guys themselves rejected the "emo" label. In short, they didn't seem like the kind of people who would sit around watching old Clint Eastwood movies,...

Back in 2012, 9.79* aired as part of ESPN’s 30 for 30 franchise. Daniel Gordon’s film focused on the 100-meter final at the Seoul Olympics, a race that was dominated by Ben Johnson, who then abdicated the crown after a positive steroid test, leaving Carl Lewis as the desultory victor.
In an era oversaturated with sports documentaries, the closest we came to a doc focused on Lewis, among the greatest track and field stars ever, was one that was really about The Other Guy.
Even after his career-ending long-jump victory at the Atlanta Olympics offered an opportunity for people to embrace Lewis fully, he was still seen as somewhere between unlikable and unknowable.
That contention is finally put to the test in Julie Anderson and Chris Hay’s new feature documentary I’m Carl Lewis!

Perhaps more than any other genre, the Western demands a specific, rugged essence from its actors to be believable. For example, character actors such as Ben Johnson, Jack Elam, Chill Willis, and John Ireland possessed a certain aesthetic that allowed them to become part of the iconography of the genre as a whole. However, some Western stars can manage the aesthetics of the genre without the acting chops of character actors.
Cinema's greatest Western stars embody toughness, grit, and self-reliance. They also are able to transcend time, shedding their modern sensibilities and encompassing the spirit of the Old West. Actors such as Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, and James Stewart rank among the best Western stars of all time.

Former NFL quarterback Tom Brady has been told he should not commentate on the Detroit Lions-Washington Commanders playoff game.
According to reports, Brady, the minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, has been tied to Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson throughout the head-coach hiring process. Johnson is currently the frontrunner for the Raiders job.
This has created an issue for Sunday since Brady, who once said that the NFL had gotten too soft, will have to then commentate on the Lions’ divisional-round matchup with the Washington Commanders.
Many, including Football Night in America insider Mike Florio and the sports media author Ben Axelrod, are skeptical that the ex-nfl quarterback can maintain an objective voice during this game.
During a virtual appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, Florio stated that Brady “either has no self-awareness whatsoever to realize the various landmines and conflicts of interest.”

John Henry "Doc" Holliday (1851–1887) was a sharp-witted dentist-turned-gunslinger and gambler with a hot temper who ultimately became famous for his role in the Wild West and his close friendship with lawman Wyatt Earp. Diagnosed with tuberculosis, Holliday turned to gambling and occasionally worked as a dentist. He developed a reputation as a skilled card player and a quick-draw gunfighter. Holliday's partnership with Earp led him to become involved in law enforcement conflicts, including the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1881. This deadly confrontation, pitting Earp and Holliday against the Clanton-McLaury gang, became legendary.
Doc Holliday died in Colorado in 1887 at the age of 36. His colorful life story has been the subject of many books and movies, most notable in the 1993 movie Tombstone with Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. However, Doc’s life inspired many other movies, including some that rival the legendary Tombstone itself.

While many children of famous actors follow their parents into the profession, it is pretty rare that the child equals or surpasses the achievements of their parent. A few names come to mind: Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas, Angelina Jolie. And Jeff Bridges definitely belongs on that list.
His father was the highly successful actor Lloyd Bridges, who appeared in over 100 films and starred in multiple TV series including the popular “Sea Hunt.” Jeff’s brother is the Emmy Award-winning actor Beau Bridges.
Jeff’s career had an auspicious start when he earned an Oscar nomination at age 22 for his second film “The Last Picture Show.” Still regarded as a classic, the film featured an all-star cast of experienced performers and introduced a bunch of new young actors such as Cybill Shepherd, Timothy Bottoms, Sam Bottoms and Bridges.

It makes sense that at a certain point, many actors decide to try their hand at acting and step behind the camera to exercise more creative control. There are many famous actors who made the transition and are now better known for their direction, like Greta Gerwig or John Cassavetes. However, the reverse is also true with performers who reached such a level of stardom that discovering they contributed so much to great works of cinema comes as a surprise. However, having experience as a performer gives a director unique insight into how best to work with actors.
There are plenty of actors who make even better directors, but these performers are so well-known for their onscreen roles that it comes as a shock to learn they've stepped behind the camera. More often than not, these actors were already attached to perform in the projects they directed, giving them even more of a challenge.

Jared Harris is going full circle and returning to the Royal Shakespeare Company for the first time in 34 years to play Claudius, the treacherous uncle in Hamlet. It is a play much-loved by his father Richard Harris, who played Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies and Marcus Aurelius in Ridley Scott’s original 2000 Gladiator.
Harris said that when he and his brothers, thespian Jamie and director Damien, were kids, their stage-struck parents — dad Richard and mum Elizabeth Rees-Williams — would sit around the dinner table and discuss the productions they’d seen and “Dad would actually get up from the table and act them out for us boys.”
His father “adored” Hamlet and many of Shakespeare’s other plays. “I saw his version of [Laurence] Olivier’s death scene in Coriolanus quite a few times,” he chuckles from his hotel room in Iceland, where he’s shooting...

Goldie Hawn stars in The Sugarland Express, with Steven Spielberg’s film arriving on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time.
Steven Spielberg was just 26 years old when he embarked on The Sugarland Express, the first time he’d put together a feature film with a cinema release in mind. By this stage in his career – and he was on the eve of Jaws – he’d already directed the terrific film Duel, but that was effectively a television movie. The Sugarland Express was a scaling up.
Goldie Hawn and Ben Johnson star in the film, and it was also the movie that saw Spielberg working with John Williams for the first time. Quite the collaboration that’d turn out to be. Spielberg also co-authored the story with credited screenwriters Matthew Robbins and Hal Barwood.

When it comes to filmmaking, it's hard to imagine two men more unlike one another than Marlon Brando and Stanley Kubrick. Both are legends of the industry, but whereas Kubrick was a notorious perfectionist and micromanager, Brando liked to live in the moment and search for spontaneous inspiration, often not even memorizing his lines. To make matters worse, both men had impossibly strong personalities, which is why, the one time they attempted to work together on the Western One-Eyed Jacks, it all went to hell.
When Kubrick was fresh off his hit war film Paths of Glory, Brando hand-picked him to direct an adaptation of a Western novel, The Authentic Death of Hendry Jones. Kubrick ultimately dropped out two weeks before production began, leaving Marlon Brando to direct the picture himself in one of Hollywood's most interesting behind-the-scenes stories of all time.

John Wayne defined the Western genre. Thanks to his fringe shirt, cowboy hat, and loping walk, one can't picture a Western hero without imagining his seismic imprint on the genre. However, even someone as prodigious as Wayne can't define American iconography alone. Wayne became the stuff of legends under the poetic and wondrous visions of John Ford and Howard Hawks, and he was supported by a recurring stock company of reliable character actors, including Ward Bond, Harry Carey Jr., Ben Johnson, and Maureen O'Hara. Starring in a movie with Wayne was like a family get-together, and no actor reached the status of surrogate blood relative quite like Paul Fix, a versatile and prolific character actor who appeared in a whopping 26 movies with The Duke, from his early days as a plucky outlaw to his final years as an aging guardian of the West.

“The Piano Lesson” is a showcase for Samuel L. Jackson and Danielle Deadwyler. This upcoming Netflix flick is adapted from August Wilson’s 1987 Pulitzer Prize winner. The story is centered on the Charles family, who have to decide what to do with a great family heirloom — a piano. Jackson plays the patriarch, Doaker Charle, who acts as a storyteller in the play and recounts detailed stories about the piano’s history. And Deadwyler plays his niece Berniece, who is a strong advocate for keeping the piano.
Jackson has a long history with this piece. He originated the role of Boy Willie at the Yale Repertory Theater in 1987 and reaped a Tony bid for his performance as Doaker in the acclaimed 2022 Broadway revival directed by his wife, Latanya Richardson Jackson. John David Washington, who played Boy Willie in that production, reprises his role here, with his brother Malcolm Washington handling helming.

Pale Rider is a homage to 1953's Shane, with major similarities in both characters and story beats. Clint Eastwood's Preacher is a supernatural character, with hints about his ghostly nature sprinkled into the story. Pale Rider is not the only movie to riff on Shane, with various films like Logan borrowing its narrative elements.
Clint Eastwood's underrated Pale Rider took a classic Western from the 1950s and gave it a decidedly supernatural edge. Clint Eastwood's Westerns are some of the most defining of the genre, and he was one of the last major stars to make his name on "Oaters." The failure of Heaven's Gate in 1980 killed Westerns for much of the decade, with studios largely shunning them. There were exceptions, like Young Guns, but they were largely seen by producers as box office poison.
For Eastwood's part, he mostly stepped away from Westerns following 1976's The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott shine in The Shadow Riders, bringing their iconic Western chemistry to the small screen. The family-friendly adaptation of Louis L'Amour's novel offers action-packed scenes for all ages to enjoy. Stellar performances from the cast, including Katharine Ross and Ben Johnson, enhance the film's appeal and rewatch value.
These days, actor Tom Selleck is best known for his role as Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods, the long-running and much-loved CBS police procedural. Sam Elliotts most notable work as of late was becoming the main star of a Yellowstone prequel series called 1883 where he played Shea Brennen, the high-strung but tragic hero of the expedition. Even though Elliott has found his way back to a genre that first made him a star (see his role in 1967s The Way West), Selleck too made his mark in westerns as well, from the late '70s to the early '80s.

1978's The Swarm was called the worst movie ever. This was the case in spite of the fact that it starred MIchael Caine, Henry Fonda, and seven other Oscar nominees. The movie's 9% Rotten Tomatoes score belies its quality, though it still has entertainment value.

With CEOs from Target, Best Buy and the parent company of U.S. Bank backing Minneapolis’ proposal, the host committee is promising at least $2 million annually “to sustain and grow the festival,” says Film North executive director Andrew Peterson.
“With our thriving arts and entertainment scene, diverse cultural heritage, and passionate film community, Minneapolis is the ideal backdrop for the Sundance Film Festival,” Mayor Jacob Frey tells Deadline.

Grounded in reality, The Last Picture Show offers a stark and somber look at growing up in a fading era of Americana. Characters reveal realistic regrets, desires, and disappointments in a small town where life doesn't necessarily get better with age. Unlike other coming-of-age films, The Last Picture Show portrays the brutal truths of youth and adulthood without melodrama.
Based on Larry McMurtry’s novel of the same name, The Last Picture Show is a wholly American heartbreaker. Rooted in a fading era when restless youth crossed unexpected paths with their listless elders, the film was a massive success upon its release in 1971. Earning eight Academy Award nominations and winning two Oscars, the film was championed by legendary film critics like Roger Ebert as a truly "Great Movie."

Pageantry. Screw ups. Touching tributes. Private beefs made public. There are plenty of reasons to watch the Oscars. But they all amount to partaking in, witnessing, movie history in its many forms — the high art, the gossip, the record-breaking moments when an arthouse director becomes a household name.
However, there are a lot of ways to set a record. There are big moments like Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King tying the record with 11 trophies or Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite becoming the first film not in English (or silent) to win Best Picture. And then, beyond those sit the oddities and records that are nearly impossible to break. Give me records like Walter Brennan winning three Best Supporting Actor awards because, as a former extra, he was popular with the Union of Film Extras, who were allowed to vote. At least, the story goes, they were allowed...

Among the various distinctions “Everything Everywhere All at Once” incurred by winning seven awards at the 95th Oscars was becoming the first film in a dozen years (and ninth overall) to conquer both supporting acting categories. This rare occurrence involved Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis preventing their respective “The Banshees of Inisherin” competitors from accomplishing the same goal, as the sets of featured nominees from “Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” had both failed to do one year earlier. Now, two more pairs of cast mates – who happen to hail from the two highest-grossing live action movies of 2023 – are gunning for entry into this exclusive club.

Beatrice Straight's five-minute performance in "Network" earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, making her the record holder for the shortest performance to win the award. Other actors, such as Ben Johnson and Gloria Graham, have also won Oscars for short but impactful performances in films. While Straight's career was primarily in theater, her role in "Network" showcased her talent for delivering emotional and powerful performances in a short amount of time.
Directed by Sidney Lumet from a script by Paddy Chayefsky, this is among the most star-studded and talented casts ever formed for a film. Faye Dunaway appears as Diana Christensen, while William Holden plays Max Schumacher. There's also Peter Finch as Howard Beale, Robert Duvall as Frank Hackett, and Ned Beatty as Arthur Jenson. None of that is to even touch on the actress at hand: Beatrice Straight, who portrays Louise Schumacher to an indelible degree.

The greatest Western movie endings of all time come from throughout the genre's long history. As it is the last thing that viewers see, great endings are crucial in influencing how a movie is remembered by its audiences. From romantic rides into the sunset and heroic farewells, to brutal final showdowns and the bleak or poignant endings of revisionist anti-Westerns, the genre's best third acts are a mixed bag of thematic conclusions.
Apart from movies that are critically acclaimed as the best Westerns ever made, less popular and more recent entries into the genre have contributed their fair share of perfect endings as well. With the American Western being as old as filmmaking itself, it's difficult to determine exactly how many Westerns ended on a perfect note, but there are many that deserve a place in this special category. For those looking for movies about the Wild West that are...
