Bethany Joy Lenz on Escaping a Cult, Losing All Her ‘One Tree Hill’ Money and Fighting to Keep Her Daughter From That Life
Image
Fifteen months ago, during a recap episode of the “Drama Queens” podcast, guest Michaela McManus asked co-hosts Bethany Joy Lenz and Sophia Bush whether they’d ever write a book. Lenz responded that she often writes, and that she would love to tell her story. And then she revealed to listeners something shocking about herself. “I was in a cult for 10 years,” she said. “That would be a really valuable experience to write about — and the 10 years of recovery after that. There’s there’s a lot to tell.”

Four weeks later, she talked about the experience at length for the first time, speaking with Variety over Zoom. As she sat outside her Nashville home, we spoke for 45 minutes about the shame she felt, how her “One Tree Hill” cast tried to help and how she ultimately overcame the fear she had about leaving the group.

Now, 11 months after that interview,...

One Tree Hill's Real Villain Isn't The One You're Thinking Of
Image
The CW's One Tree Hill defined the young adult drama genre of the 2000s. The show maintains a massive global fan base due to its handling of a variety of complex topics (from teen pregnancy to shootings and divorce) and relatable situations for teenage viewers. The show's villain for many seasons is Dan Scott (played by Paul Johansson) the patriarch of the Scott family and the father of half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott. However, while Dan Scott committed a variety of villainous actions throughout the show's nine seasons, the true villain of One Tree Hill is none other than his son, Lucas.

Lucas Scott's character was a major teen heartthrob. Dan Scott fathered his sons within months of each other, one with his hometown girlfriend Karen and the other with his college girlfriend Deb. As a result, the half brothers share a unique rivalry exacerbated by Dan's scheming. However,...

One Tree Hill Had TV’s Most Underrated Time Jump
Image
When you think of shows that define teen drama, One Tree Hill is at the very top of the list. The beloved CW series had everything a young audience looks for: from messy love triangles to half-brother angst. When it made the jump to take its characters from high school to their adult years between seasons 4 and 5, however, the show reached a whole new and exciting level.

It’s extremely difficult to do a successful time jump, especially when it comes to the YA genre. If it’s done incorrectly, it can ruin the entire show as well as its characters, losing fans in the process as they long for what the show once was. One Tree Hill managed to use its time jump to not only elevate the storylines but breathe new life into its beloved group of characters after graduation.

In the early-to-mid 2000s, many sci-fi shows such...

All 13 One Tree Hill Deaths, Ranked By How Sad They Were
Image
Peyton and Haley both lose their mothers during the run of the show. Quentin is one of the most unexpected deaths in the show. Keith Scott's death in "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept" is the most tragic of the series.

One Tree Hill was a quintessential part of the teen drama television genre, and always delivered big emotional moments, including the deaths of many beloved characters. The series ran from 2003 to 2012 for a total of nine seasons. When the show started, it revolved around the high school experience of the main characters but pivoted halfway through the series' run and followed the cast well into adulthood. Throughout the show, the plots and characters proved themselves as more than able to adapt to new challenges and serious subject matter.

After running for so many seasons and witnessing so much change, it's unsurprising that the show also...

Before starring on One Tree Hill for nine seasons, star James Lafferty says he was close to walking away from acting.

In an interview with People published Friday, the actor reflected on spending his childhood in the “acting game” that eventually led to the Oth opportunity. “I started when I was really young and I was auditioning by the time I was 10 and working my way up through smaller roles to get the opportunity to do something like this,” Lafferty said.

While visiting the Warner Bros. offices, Lafferty recalled seeing photos of the cast of Dawson’s Creek thinking, “Oh man, it’d be so cool to be up there someday.”

“When I got the audition for One Tree Hill — when I got the script it was originally called Ravens — and the role was a basketball player and he had an edge to him,” he recalls. “And it was just an...

This ‘One Tree Hill’ Scene Might Be the Most Bonkers Moment in Television History
Image
If you think the craziest moment in One Tree Hill was when a rogue nanny dressed up as a nurse and tried to spoon-feed cockroaches to an ex-con, you are sorely mistaken. In Season 6 of One Tree Hill, at least according to his sons, it was about time that everyone’s favorite bad dad, Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), finally got a heart. In Episode 18, Dan is informed that a heart has become available for his much-needed transplant, but in what is undeniably One Tree Hill’s most bizarre moment, a string of bad luck ends with a stoned dog gobbling up the heart and running away. In the vast landscape of teen dramas, One Tree Hill set itself apart by showing that it was able to laugh at itself and that no matter what you thought was possible, anything can happen in Tree Hill. So... how did this even happen?...

’One Tree Hill’s Best Character Was Dan Scott
Image
Throughout One Tree Hill’s nine-season run, there was no shortage of colorful characters walking the streets of this drama-filled North Carolina town. As we bore witness to years of generational daddy issues, multiple murder plots, and about a bazillion high school basketball games, we can see how one person was consistently at the center of it all. He served as mayor of Tree Hill, had his own talk show, and was briefly a burger cook at a diner in which we never saw a single patron. This was none other than Dan Scott (Paul Johansson).

Keep reading to find out what he said…

“It was awful,” Paul remembered. “I was, I’ve never spoken about this before, I was deeply depressed and I was drinking. I was drinking a couple bottles of wine a night by myself. For about six or seven years, it was really tough.”

'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver' Tackles Unos and Organ Donation
Image
Back when teen dramas were all the rage, long-running series One Tree Hill delivered a scene that will forever be in our hearts: While Dan Scott (Paul Johansson) was waiting for a heart transplant, he got to see that organ fall to the floor inside the hospital and get picked up by a dog that runs away with it. It’s great TV, and as Last Week Tonight with John Oliver proved this week, perfectly illustrates everything that’s wrong with the organ and body donation systems in the U.S.

God Is a Bullet digital release is 36 minutes shorter in Canada
Image
It took more than eighteen years for writer/director Nick Cassavetes to manage to get an adaptation of the Boston Teran novel God Is a Bullet (pick up a copy Here) into production, but he stuck with the project, and his film received a wide theatrical release last month. A week ago, it was given a digital release as well – but now it has come to our attention that there are two different cuts of the movie out there. If you seek out the digital version in the United States, you’ll find that the cut available is the full 156 minute cut. But if you go to rent or purchase the digital release in Canada, you’ll find that the movie has been trimmed down to 120 minutes.

We don’t know exactly why the Canadian digital release is 36 minutes shorter than the U.S. digital release. On the Blu-ray.com forums,...

Bruce Willis' Detective Knight Trilogy: Why These Action Movies Are Worth The Watch
Image
Rising through the rank as an esteemed action star in the late 80s as well as throughout the 90s by headlining the Die Hard franchise and starring in such classics like The Fifth Element and 12 Monkeys (among many others), Bruce Willis quickly garnered a large and loyal fan base with his unique presence and dedication to the craft. Receiving numerous awards over the years, which include Emmys, People’s Choice Awards, and a Golden Globe, he has surely cemented his legacy through time. With a career that never seemed to stop chugging along, avid followers of his were shocked and quite distressed to hear in March 2022 that Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, a disease that gradually worsens the mental and behavioral patterns of a person.

Shortly before his retirement, Willis signed on to star in a trilogy of films in a franchise titled Detective Knight. Detective Knight: Rogue...

‘God Is a Bullet’ Review: Nihilistic Revenge Thriller Doesn’t Believe in Anything — Including Plot
Image
A movie about a pair of unlikely friends teaming up to infiltrate a cult is always going to rest on two things: the friends having chemistry and the cult being interesting. You’d really prefer to have both of those elements working for you, but a filmmaker can get by as long as one of them is strong. Unfortunately for everyone involved, “God Is a Bullet” has neither.

Nick Cassavetes’ adaptation of Boston Teran’s novel of the same name is an ambitious mess that features wild highs (a snake doing meth!) and impossibly dull lows (most everything else). Overly long and gratuitously violent, the bloated revenge thriller seems obsessed with reminding us of how much evil is in the world without showing the slightest bit of interest in explaining how it got there.

The one thing everyone in Detective Bob Hightower’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) life can agree on is...

‘God Is a Bullet’ Review: Nick Cassavetes Delivers a Blood-Soaked Highway to Hell
Image
Adapted from the author’s 1999 debut novel, “God Is A Bullet” is the first screen translation of a work by one Boston Teran, a prolific but pseudononymous scribe of popular page-turners. Those tomes have been well-received by thriller fans, though others have speculated they might be a genre put-on penned by possibly more than one well-known literary figure. Nick Cassavetes’ slick adaptation certainly maintains the book’s mix of lurid incident and pontificating pretentiousness — albeit without the kind of intensity that might have made this far-fetched story credible, or the atmospheric style that might’ve pulled it off as a fevered nightmare à la David Lynch instead.

These 156 minutes, with cop Nicolaj Coster-Waldau and escaped captive Maika Monroe pursuing the cult of devil-worshipping scumbags who’ve kidnapped his daughter, are not exactly dull. But they are rather ludicrous, without being much fun. It’s hard not to imagine this overlong,...

‘God Is a Bullet’ Review: Jamie Foxx and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in Nick Cassavetes’ Brutal — and Brutally Silly — Thriller
Image
Revenge thrillers tend to be most effective when they’re lean and mean. Such is definitely not the case with the new film from writer-director Nick Cassavetes, his first since 2014’s The Other Woman. Based on Boston Teran’s well-received 1999 novel, God Is a Bullet squanders its provocative premise with a ridiculously bloated running time (155 minutes, and you feel every one of them) and gratuitous violence that lends a cartoonish sheen to a story aspiring to gritty realness. Despite its talented cast, who demonstrate a willingness to go for broke in their portrayals, the film comes across like a pretentious version of an ‘80s-era Charles Bronson actioner.

Actually, Bronson would have been perfect for the role of detective Bob Hightower (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), whose ex-wife and her new husband are brutally murdered by the members of a cult who seemed to have watched The Hills Have Eyes too many times. In...

Jamie Foxx's God Is A Bullet: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know
Image
Films about violent cults always have the same vibe as serial killer movies because they make sure to offer an excess of gore, thrills, and action. While there have been plenty of cult thrillers this year, such as Hypnotic and Hulu's The Clearing, the upcoming God Is A Bullet brings something new to the table: a father's desperate struggle to save his abducted daughter and exact vengeance on his murdered ex-wife.

God Is A Bullet is an upcoming cult action thriller based on the novel of the same name by Boston Teran. The film is written and directed by Nick Cassavetes and stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Jamie Foxx, and Maika Monroe. Filming began in Mexico City in May 2021 and concluded in August 2021.

Wayward Entertainment, which apparently purchased the distribution rights in April 2023, will be making its theatrical debut with this film. That being said, if you're looking forward to seeing an intriguing cult action thriller,...
