‘John Proctor Is The Villain’ Extends On Broadway For Third And Final Time
Image
The hit Broadway play John Proctor is the Villain will extend for a third and final time by one week, with the new closing date now Sunday, September 7.

The announcement was made today by producers Sue Wagner, John Johnson, John Mara Jr., Runyonland, and Eric Falkenstein. Kimberly Belflower’s play began previews at the Booth Theatre on March 20, and opened on April 14.

The critically acclaimed production routinely sells out, and for the week ending July 13 – original star Sadie Sink’s final week – grossed its highest amount – $1,128,804 – to date. Chiara Aurelia is now playing the lead role of Shelby Holcomb.

Last week, Universal Pictures optioned the film rights for the play, with Tina Fey and Eric Gurian producing under their Little Stranger Inc. banner, and Marc Platt, Adam Siegel and Jared LeBoff producing through Marc Platt Productions. Sink is executive producing.

On Broadway, the play is directed by Danya Taymor. John...

8 canceled sci-fi shows we’re still mad about
Image
It seems like we don't get as many complex and interesting science fiction shows as we used to, like creators are apprehensive about taking bold swings with potentially complex concepts (just look at how watered down 3 Body Problem wound up being on Netflix). And who can blame them when many of this past decade's best and most promising sci-fi shows have resulted in early cancellations?

To be fair, Apple TV+ is still trying to provide ample sci-fi series between Severance, Foundation, and Silo, but it would be nice if there were more high-profile options between the various streamers. It made me start thinking about the sci-fi shows of the past and the ones I still think about all the time, wishing they hadn't been canceled so soon.

Julianne Nicholson dances her way to the top of the Comedy Guest Actress Emmy predictions for ‘Hacks’
Image
Looks like Dance Mom will boogie all the way to the Emmy podium.

Julianne Nicholson, who played the joyous (and drug-addicted) character on Hacks Season 4, now leads the Best Comedy Guest Actress race, taking down longtime frontrunner Jamie Lee Curtis for The Bear, who won last year. Nicholson's Dance Mom, aka Mary Alice, was recruited by Paul W. Downs' Jimmy and Megan Stalter's Kayla to appear on Late Night With Deborah Vance as a way for the talk show-within-a-show to gain a younger audience. At first, Jean Smart's Deborah was hesitant to let the untested woman take the stage, until she realized it would annoy Hannah Einbinder's Ava, and then all bets were off.

There's a new Hacks tonight, but I have not yet recovered from Julianne Nicholson dancing to Katy Perry's "Lifetimes" as Dance Mom in last week's episode. pic.twitter.com/SH3OPittFI

Why A Hamilton Movie Hasn't Happened Explained By West End Producer
Image
A West End theater producer has explained why a Hamilton movie has yet to happen. Audiences worldwide were captivated by Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway musical when the filmed stage production was released on Disney+ in 2020. The musical, centered around one of America's founding fathers, was an immediate success on account of Hamilton's exceptional song composition. Magnificently, Miranda's stage show earned 11 Tony Awards and, two years later, opened in London's West End, where it won seven Olivier Awards — the highest honors in British theater. Despite strong public demand for a Hamilton film, the project has not materialized.

Before John Johnson's recent comments on The Town with Matthew Belloni, Lin-Manuel Miranda shared his reservations in response to a Hamilton movie. While the creator addressed how difficult the process is for adapting musicals to film, Johnson suggested Hamilton should be in no rush to hit theaters anytime soon. The producer dispelled any...

How George Clooney’s ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ Is Preparing to Go Live on CNN
Image
George Clooney’s play Good Night, and Good Luck is set to air live on CNN this Saturday, in a move meant to spread the play’s timely message and raise the profile of Broadway.

The idea for the live broadcast originated with Clooney, who is starring in the production as legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow, and co-wrote the play. The play follows Murrow as he pursues reporting exposing the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, and stands up to pushback from McCarthy as well as CBS station heads.

“One of the reasons that George came to Broadway with this show is because the story is deeply, deeply meaningful to him,” said Sue Wagner, one of the lead producers. “It was really important to him to stand on stage every night and say to people, ‘This isn’t about power unchecked. It’s about ‘What are you prepared to do? How...

Image
Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will make their Broadway debuts next year in Dog Day Afternoon, a new play by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis (Between Riverside and Crazy) based on the true crime that inspired Sidney Lumet’s Oscar-winning 1975 motion picture starring Al Pacino and John Cazale.

The play will be directed by two-time Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold (King Charles III). Bernthal will play Sonny Amato, the character played by Pacino in the film, and Moss-Bachrach will portray Sal DeSilva, John Cazale in the movie. (The surnames were different in the film.)

The play is expected to open on Broadway in spring 2026. Additional casting was not disclosed.

The synopsis: Step back into the sweltering summer of 1972, New York City—a time when the Vietnam War looms large, Watergate headlines flood the news, and one man’s desperate act captivates the nation. A Brooklyn bank holdup quickly goes wrong,...

How ‘The Rehearsal’ Season 2 Raises the Volume to New Heights
Image
“The Rehearsal” Season 2’s premiere episode title, “Gotta Have Fun,” contains a challenge within it. The raison d’être of a comedy series is exactly that, to entertain the audience and show them a fun time, but series creator Nathan Fielder acknowledges in voiceover that he has to start quite seriously, given that the topic of the season is safety and communication in airplane cockpits. Although the comedian diagnoses this roughly 10-minute section of “The Rehearsal” as one with “zero laughs,” the show is slyly disarming what could be a grim montage of airplane crashes, and it’s doing it in a particularly “The Rehearsal” way.

The HBO show is well known now for its production design’s meticulous recreations of real-world locations. In Season 2’s opening sequence, it appears to be continuing that trend with a detailed recreation of a cockpit as a co-pilot (Eric Barron) fails to convince...

The Rehearsal Season 2 Review — Nathan Fielder’s Latest Experiment Is Mind-Blowing
Image
Canadian comedian and business degree graduate Nathan Fielder has been a cult favorite for years, but the HBO show The Rehearsal saw his style reach levels of ambition that many people couldn’t imagine possible. The long-awaited second season of The Rehearsal sees Fielder set his sights even higher, and while it might not be as funny as the first season, this season’s social experiment is filled with “Wtf” moments that will have viewers both laughing and squirming in their seats.

The Rehearsal Season 2 Review

Season two of The Rehearsal sees Fielder apply his groundbreaking “Fielder Method” established in the first season to solve a much bigger issue: aviation safety. The result is another blend of comedy and documentary that could only be delivered by a mind as brilliant as Fielder’s.

‘The Rehearsal’ Season 2 Review: Nathan Fielder’s Hilarious New Experiment Is a Serious Triumph
Image
“The Rehearsal,” from Nathan Fielder, was also for Nathan Fielder. The creator of HBO’s extraordinary comedy series designed the first season, ostensibly, as a service to others. He set out to help people rehearse for tricky or intimidating situations, hoping that by experiencing intricately detailed (if not always realistic) practice sessions, they’d be able to better ensure their desired outcome. Kor, a teacher who loves bar trivia, wanted to come clean to his trivia team about not having a master’s degree, without losing his beloved weekly trivia game in the process. Angela wanted to find out if motherhood was right for her. Patrick wanted to have a sensitive conversation with his brother about their grandfather’s will.

But for every extreme method Fielder employed to help participants achieve their goals — from building a fully-operational, life-size replica of the bar that hosts Kor’s trivia games to becoming...

'Lanterns' Cast Continues To Expand With a 'Walking Dead' Star
Image
HBO's Lanterns series is still ever-expanding after recently adding Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner into the fold. Per Deadline, Lawman: Bass Reeves star Chris Coy is now the latest addition to the upcoming Green Lantern drama series in a guest-starring role. He's set to embody a mysterious new character by the name of Waylon Sanders, described as "an intelligent survivor or a nervous truck driver." If that wasn't confusing enough, his real name and age remain an enigma, and he's said to be "unbound by the laws of nature." It's unclear what role he'll play and whether he'll be a friend or a foe to Lantern recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler).

Coy boards a group that has grown significantly in recent weeks, with Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jason Ritter among those on board thus far.

HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Begins Production, Bringing Green Lantern To Earth
Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in Lanterns (2026)
Photograph by John P. Johnson/HBO The Warner Bros. lot in Burbank is glowing green as production gets underway for HBO’s highly awaited drama series, Lanterns. This fresh adaptation is set to reimagine the beloved DC property Green Lantern, trading out large-scale space conflicts for an intense, grounded storyline. Rather than embarking on cosmic odysseys, Lanterns will bring audiences into a darker, more intimate narrative centered in the American heartland. At its core lies a gripping murder investigation, spearheaded by the unlikely pairing of newcomer John Stewart and seasoned Lantern Hal Jordan. While the Green Lantern Corps is known for its intergalactic exploits, this series blends their legendary mythos with the tense intrigue of a crime thriller, delivering something truly distinct in the superhero genre. The official synopsis offers a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come, describing Stewart and Jordan as “intergalactic cops” tangled up in a mysterious,...

HBO announced production’s gotten underway on Lanterns, based on the popular DC Comics property Green Lantern. Filming is taking place on the Warner Bros lot in Burbank.

“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” reads HBO’s synopsis. Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) stars as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler (Godzilla vs. Kong) plays Hal Jordan.

The comic book-inspired series also stars Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen. Chris Mundy serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

“From the start, our driving force has been to deliver a layered drama – rooted in nuanced storytelling and rich world building – that balances tension and mystery with honest, authentic emotion,” said Mundy.

HBO debuts exciting first look at its next DC Comics original series
Image
In the brightest day, in the darkest night, the first look at the new DC series Lanterns is in sight! An HBO Original series, Lanterns places legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan alongside new recruit John Stewart as the pair examine a strange murder deep within America’s Heartland.

These intergalactic police officers, both Earthlings, are well-equipped for this mission on their homeworld. What mystery unfolds from there may shape the rest of their lives, perhaps their universe.

In a social media post by the official Max account, we now know the actors portraying these important roles. Kyle Chandler, of Friday Night Lights fame, embodies Jordan as a grizzled veteran, while Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge and M. Night Shyamalan’s Old) wields the ring for Stewart.

Nathan Fielder’s “The Rehearsal” is set to return to HBO for its second season on April 20 at 10:30 p.m. Et.

In the six-episode second installment, the urgency of Fielder’s project grows as he decides to put his resources toward an issue that affects us all.

Issa Rae in Insecure (2016)
No Wonder Everyone Is Licensing Shows to Netflix
Issa Rae in Insecure (2016)
In July, HBO series “Insecure,” “Ballers,” “Band of Brothers,” “Six Feet Under,” and “The Pacific” (and “True Detective” outside of the U.S.) copy-and-pasted their way onto Netflix. The first-of-its-kind move between the longtime rivals was a success, HBO chief Casey Bloys said at Wednesday’s Code Conference — and not just in terms of a licensing fee.

“What’s been nice about it is, without doing a thing on Max, the viewership of… ‘Ballers’ and ‘Insecure’ [on Max] really saw a spike when it was on Netflix,” Bloys said. “You’re introducing it to more people, it’s marketing.”

It’s becoming a more and more common marketing practice. Rerun episodes of USA Network series “Suits” were on Peacock for years, and they did fine — for USA Network reruns on Peacock. But when NBCUniversal licensed the nine-season (2011-2019) legal dramedy to Netflix in June, the bar (pun intended) was raised.

As of Thursday,...

As Paramount+ Loses Billions, 285 Fast Channels Bring Reliable Cash to Paramount Global
Image
We live in a Fast world. At the end of June, there were approximately 1,500 unique free, ad-supported, streaming television channels — the 21st-century version of syndicated cable. According to data from Stream Metrics, those channels belong to about 20 U.S. providers.

In a Stream Metrics study for IndieWire, the analysts identified an owner for 1,364 of the channels. Most owners are in the single digits, but one company holds more than 20 percent of the channels studied: Paramount Global.

Paramount-owned Pluto TV is credited with creating 156 unique Fast channels; Paramount proper has another 129. Spanish-language media company Televisa’s next, with 45, followed by Warner Bros. Discovery’s 32.

The vast majority of the Paramount-attributed Fast TV channels were created, programmed, distributed, and operated by Pluto TV, but they’re differentiated via specific Paramount IP.

Whatever they’re called, they create a ton of revenue for Paramount Global. Deals with third-party platforms bring in licensing...

Curb Your Enthusiasm: Season 10 Renewal for HBO's Larry David Series Revival
There is no need to curb your enthusiasm, because Larry David's cringe comedy won't be cancelled anytime too soon. HBO has renewed his Curb Your Enthusiasm TV show for a 10th season.
