Cricket commentator who joined the BBC in January 1946 and continued commentating on television until 1972 and on radio until his death in 1994.

He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1983 Queen's Honours List for his services to sports broadcasting. He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1991 Queen's Honours List for his services to Cricket.

An infamous double-entendre line of cricket commentary, "the bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey", referencing Michael Holding and Peter Willey, is often attributed to Johnston who was known for making humorous remarks during matches, however it is disputed that he ever said the line, and no recording exists of it being said by him in matches involving the two players.
