‘Four Flies on Grey Velvet’ Returns in Stunning Ultra HD
Image
Dario Argento’s Four Flies on Grey Velvet returns with renewed visual menace and psychological unease this month, as Shameless Films brings the giallo classic to 4K Uhd and Blu-ray on 28 April. Often overshadowed by its more widely celebrated successors, this final entry in Argento’s early ‘Animal Trilogy’ now gets the restoration it has long deserved, complete with Dolby Vision Hdr and a host of newly unearthed special features.

Originally released in 1971, Four Flies on Grey Velvet finds celebrated rock drummer Roberto Tobias, played by Michael Brandon, drawn into a surreal spiral of paranoia and death. After accidentally killing a stalker, Roberto becomes the unwilling target of a mysterious figure who seems to be toying with him. As the bodies pile up and reality starts to fracture, the only clue lies in an image reportedly captured on the retina of a dying victim. Equal parts murder mystery, psychological fever dream,...

‘The Last Sacrifice’: How One Real-Life Killing Inspired ‘The Wicker Man’
Image
The chilling true story that inspired The Wicker Man is about to receive an unsettling re-examination as The Last Sacrifice makes its UK premiere at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest Glasgow 2025. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Rupert Russell, this investigative documentary delves into the notorious 1945 witchcraft murder of Charles Walton, a case that continues to haunt Britain’s cultural and cinematic history. The screening is set for March 7 at 3:30 Pm at the Glasgow Film Theatre, promising audiences an unnerving deep dive into a case steeped in folklore, paranoia, and ritualistic terror.

Walton’s brutal killing in the Warwickshire village of Lower Quinton has long been shrouded in mystery. His mutilated body, discovered near a tree with a crucifix carved into his chest, became the subject of widespread speculation. Some believed it to be a modern witch hunt; others suspected it was an occult sacrifice linked to ancient pagan traditions. The case remains officially unsolved,...

Trauma (1993) Revisited – Horror Movie Review

It can be hard to tell sometimes what is a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. You look at the credentials on a particular film without looking at the title and surely it has to be a mega popular hit. You have Italian mega director Dario Argento, Oscar nominated Piper Laurie, James Russo, Brad Douriff, and special effects by another master of his craft in none other than Tom Savini. I set you up with all those names and accomplishments and maybe you wrack your brain on the possibility that you have seen or even heard of the movie. But I say have you seen the 1993 horror movie Trauma (watch it Here) and I’m guessing for most people, the answer will be no. That is a sure fire way for a movie to end up on this show and that’s why today you will learn why Trauma is...

Exciting Lineup and Poster for 2024 Trieste Science+Fiction Festival
Image
The world-renowned Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, Italy’s foremost event dedicated to science fiction, has unveiled its 2024 poster designed by acclaimed cartoonist Michele Rech, better known as Zerocalcare. Scheduled to run from October 29th to November 3rd, this year’s festival promises to delve into the evolving intersection of technology and humanity, inspired by the rapid advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence.

The new poster by Zerocalcare poignantly captures the tension between the utopian dreams of past generations and the potentially dystopian future ushered in by AI. As Zerocalcare explains, “The poster tells the story of the distance between how I imagined science fiction as a kid and how my expectations have evolved: we used to think that in the future machines would do the alienating and exhausting jobs, leaving humans free to dedicate themselves to the arts. Today, quite the opposite, the evolution of artificial intelligence shows us a possible...

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre is an audacious, surreal journey through trauma, redemption, and the labyrinthine corridors of the human psyche. This film, a quintessential piece of cinematic surrealism, combines elements of horror, drama, and psychological thriller to create a visually stunning and emotionally intense experience. The film follows the life of Fenix, a boy raised in a circus who endures a series of traumatic events, including witnessing his father’s violent behavior and his mother’s descent into madness. The narrative unfolds in a non-linear fashion, interweaving past and present, reality and hallucination, to depict Fenix’s struggle with his haunting memories and his quest for liberation.

Jodorowsky is known for his rich, symbolic imagery and Santa Sangre is no exception.

Severin’s Summer Sale – Full Lineup of New Releases Includes Dario Argento’s ‘Opera’ & More
Image
Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…

Opera

In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

‘Cemetery Man’ 4K Ultra HD Review – 1990s Italian Horror Gem Shines in New Severin Release
Image
Despite being hailed by Martin Scorsese as one of the best Italian films of the 1990s, Cemetery Man is criminally underseen. Also known as Dellamorte Dellamore, the 1994 cult classic has been hard to come by in the US since Anchor Bay’s 2006 DVD went out of print, but Severin Films has revived it with a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray edition.

Dario Argento protégé Michele Soavi directs from a script by Gianni Romoli, based on the 1991 novel Dellamorte Dellamore by Tiziano Sclavi — itself a precursor to Sclavi’s influential Italian horror comic Dylan Dog. Rupert Everett (My Best Friend’s Wedding), on whom the Dylan Dog character was visually based, takes on the lead role as Francesco Dellamorte.

As he explains in the noir-esque opening narration, Dellamorte is the watchman for a small town cemetery wherein “some people, on the seventh night after their death, come back to life.” He and his slow-witted but genial assistant,...

Interview: Frightfest’s Alan Jones on new Nyx series ‘Frightfest Saturday Scares’
Image
Ahead of the Jan 20 launch of Frightfest Saturday Scares With Alan Jones on Fast TV channel Nyx, Alan recounts his rise to journalistic prominence – from stealing shocker posters and partying with Abba to falling out with filmmakers and writing his upcoming autobiography.

Did you know from a young age that you wanted to be a journalist?

No, I loved horror and fantasy movies from the age of ten, or rather the idea of them because obviously I couldn’t go to the cinema and see anything of that nature. I read horror novels nonstop, stole shocker posters pasted up on the billboards at the end of my street, cut out all the wonderfully lurid adverts from newspapers and pasted them into scrapbooks. I was literally waiting for the moment I could pass for sixteen so I could get into X films and start watching all the movies I was desperate to catch up on.

Written by Dr. John Llewellyn Probert, whose professional expertise as a urologist, novelist and film writer further extends to his work with wife (and fellow author) Kate/Thana Niveau as lost film condensed version stage-recreators Teatro Proberto. If that seems quite a lot it's indicative of the feel of the book, which continually finds ways to add a little bit more.

There's a foreword by Frightfest architect Alan Jones, who's penned two of the Frightfest Guides himself. There's also a foreword by The Human Centipede's Tom Six. After the authorial introduction, those two forewords, Probert gives us a whistlestop tour around the somewhat plastic collection of Mad Doctor movies. This sometimes strays into Mad Scientist territory,...

Terror in the Ailien Realms book consists of posters and reviews of non-existent movies
Image
Reminiscent of the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse with its throwback features and faux trailers for non-existent movies, filmmaker and artist Pat Tremblay’s new book Terror in the Ailien Realms: Transdimensional Horror Movie Posters & Their Film Reviews consists of posters for and reviews of movies that have never existed!

An explanation of what this book is all about was provided in a press release (via Variety), “Drawn by the deep nostalgia of roaming video rental stores to find cool movies to watch by judging what its VHS box’s artwork would entice or beguile, filmmaker & artist Pat Tremblay has created a series of horror movie posters with the assistance of AI. He then proposed to talented individuals within the horror movie scene to write imaginary reviews for them. The result is a captivating mixture of styles, ranging from the enigmatic and alluring to the outrageously hilarious. The dimensional...

This is premiering pretty soon at the FrightFest Horror Festival in London this summer, hence the first trailer dropping now to build some buzz. When a woman trying to outrun her past ends up trapped between a zombie outbreak (from a virus called "Heps") and warring militia groups, she is caught in a world where some fight for survival but others fight for control. As usual in this kind of apocalyptic situations. The film stars Corbin Bernsen, Timothy V. Murphy, Ellen Adair, Mitzi Akaha, and Jeremy Holm. The Burning: 1981 slasher is getting a 4K Uhd release this summer
Image
Scream Factory has announced that they will be bringing the 1981 slasher The Burning (watch it Here) to 4K Uhd this summer – on July 11th, to be exact – and they’re taking pre-orders at This Link. While supplies last, fans who order the 4K Uhd / Blu-ray set through the Scream Factory website will receive an exclusive 18” X 24” rolled poster featuring the original theatrical artwork. The price is $35.99.

The movie is a very cool slasher and I think Scream Factory has chosen an ideal release date for it, as it’s a great one to put on during the summer.

Directed by Tony Maylam, who also crafted the story with Bob Weinstein, Peter Lawrence, Brad Grey, and, unfortunately, Harvey Weinstein, The Burning has the following synopsis: At summer camp, some teenagers pull a prank on the camp’s caretaker, Cropsy. But the joke goes terribly wrong, and the teens leave Cropsy for...

1980s Slasher ‘The Burning’ Gets a 4K Ultra HD Upgrade This Summer
Image
The next slasher classic to get the 4K Ultra HD treatment is The Burning, with Scream Factory announcing today that the 1981 film hits 4K Uhd + Blu-ray on July 11, 2023.

In The Burning, “A group of summer camp pranksters get the scare of their lives when they target the camp’s creepy caretaker…and he takes bloody revenge!”

Feeling like a lost Friday the 13th movie, The Burning introduced the slasher icon known as Cropsy. The film is notable for featuring gore effects from the legendary Tom Savini.

Meagan Navarro wrote here on Bloody Disgusting a while back, “The Burning delivers in a satisfying way thanks to Tom Savini’s uncanny talent for gore.”

The film is also notable for featuring early appearances from actors Fisher Stevens, Holly Hunter, and Jason Alexander, who all became big stars in their own right.

Bonus Features include:

Audio Commentary With Director Tony Maylam And International...

Edurne Azkarate and Eneko Sagardoy in Irati (2022)
A different way of seeing by Andrew Robertson
Edurne Azkarate and Eneko Sagardoy in Irati (2022)
Irati

Irati was screened as part of the Frightfest strand at 2023's Glasgow Film Festival. It was originally scheduled for ten to four in the afternoon, but technical difficulties meant it couldn't be shown at that time. Instead, with no small measure of effort behind the scenes, it was shown at eleven o'clock that same evening. Frightfest screenings usually sell out near instantaneously. However porous the borders of horror are, its fans are tightly-knit in their support. That nightmare of exhibition was a happy accident for us at Eye For Film, as it meant that we were able to fit it into our schedule, and, equally luckily, fit ourselves into the cinema.

Alan Jones and Paul Urkijo Alijo in the Glasgow Film Theatre Photo: Andrew Robertson

It was introduced by Frightfest's Alan Jones and the film's director Paul Urkijo Alijo, who were greeted by rapturous applause. There was clear gratitude from Alijo,...

I was a huge fan of Jake West and Marc Morris’ first documentary on the Video Nasties scandal of the early 80s and it opened my eyes to a period in time I was actually too young to really remember – at the time of...

Dario Argento’s later forays into the lurid world of the giallo is being released on DVD by Arrow Video on 2nd May under the title of Neo Giallo Collection. So if you want to revisit the likes of Terror At The Opera, Sleepless, The Stendhal Syndrome and The Card Player, this collection of “neo-giallo” is for you.

The Stendhal Syndrome, in particular, is one of the master’s most underrated features. Below is the full press release along with all the extra features on each disc. A very cool bunch of films indeed.

“Sit back, relax and prepare to be thrilled, frightened and horrified by the four latter day Dario Argento classics contained within The Neo-Giallo Collection.

Baroque excess and eyelid piercing horror spill from the screen in Opera, Argento’s gory love song to the classical stage, when a young singer is stalked by a homicidal maniac,...

AfterElton.com’s Top 50 Gay Characters of All Time!
We asked you which gay or bisexual TV characters you think are the best, and you told us – with tens of thousands of votes cast.

Now we have the results.

But first, a few interesting statistics.

We have quite a few familiar faces – characters who made our last poll of the best gay and bisexual characters two and a half years ago – and a few missing ones, namely Vince D’Angelo (from Will & Grace), George Huang (from Law & Order: Svu), and Waylon Smithers (from The Simpsons), all of whom didn’t even make the top 50 this time around.

Meanwhile, we also have many new faces – from shows that have debuted since our last poll.

Every single character except two comes from a show that ran in the 00s (although some shows, like Will & Grace, did debut in the late 90s). The exceptions? Jodie Dallas, played by Billy Crystal, on Soap...
