'Rest in Power': The Resident Stars Mourn Malcolm-Jamal Warner After Tragic Death
Image
Folks were shocked on Monday, waking up to the news of Malcolm-Jamal Warner's tragic death after the actor drowned in Costa Rica the day before.

Inarguably best known for his role as Theo Huxtable in The Cosby Show, Warner returned as a television staple in The Resident, where he spent six seasons from 2018 to 2023 in a co-starring role. Now, his cast and crew-mates are memorializing the actor, including a statement provided to Deadline by The Resident executive producers Amy Holden Jones, Todd Harthan and Andrew Chapman.

“Working with Malcolm was a joy," expressed The Resident showrunners in the statement. Adding, "He was a fabulous actor and a stellar human being. He was larger than life, and brought a deep empathy and humanity to every scene.

‘The Resident’ EPs, Co-Stars Morris Chestnut & Shaunette Renée Wilson Pay Tribute To Malcolm-Jamal Warner: “He Was Larger Than Life”
Image
Although beloved for his role as Theo Huxtable in the 1980s sitcom The Cosby Show, it was his portrayal of Aj “The Raptor” Austin in Fox’s medical drama The Resident (2018-2023) that allowed fans to reconnect with Malcolm-Jamal Warner as an adult in a major way.

Aj was known for being a man of the people and principles. Through his character, the series brought to the forefront conversations around the complexities of the broken healthcare and immigration systems in the U.S., as well as adoption through the character’s personal experiences. As someone who covered the show during its six-season run, I can confidently say that Warner shared great qualities with Aj. Not only were they caring and smart, but also intentional, thoughtful, and funny.

“Working with Malcolm was a joy. He was a fabulous actor and a stellar human being. He was larger than life, and brought...

Would ‘The Resident’ Have Added a New Character in Season 7?
Image
With a new season of television, especially one in the medical or procedural drama, chances are a new character will come in. But would that have been the case if The Resident hadn’t been canceled after six seasons and instead had returned for a seventh? TV Insider asked co-creator Amy Holden Jones and executive producer Andrew Chapman just that when they detailed what would have happened in a Season 7. “No, because we had Yamada [Ian Anthony Dale], and we hadn’t used him enough, so he was like the major new character,” Jones told us. However, she said there was a scenario in which the cast would have expanded. “That thing sort of is dependent on who stays and who goes. And if somebody goes, then you have to fill that hole,” she explained. “But we had a lot of characters already. It was hard scrambling all the ones we had.

‘The Resident’ Bosses Reveal How Medical Stories Would Have Changed in Season 7
Image
If The Resident had continued for a seventh season, the medical stories likely would have looked a bit different. TV Insider recently spoke with co-creator Amy Holden Jones and executive producer Andrew Chapman about what would have happened if The Resident hadn’t been canceled, and they revealed that there would have been a shift in the medical stories they told. At the end of Season 6, Chastain was saved by the governor after they saved his life. As a result, “the other hospitals would’ve not been on such a great financial footing,” noted Jones. “If you did it today, that would be the story, is that the public hospital would be flooded because the other ones, if there are Medicare and Medicaid cuts are going to be struggling financially a lot because hospitals rely on those. But Chastain has to treat everybody.” She also said that as a result,...

‘The Resident’ Bosses Explain Why Series Was Canceled After 6 Seasons
Image
Knowing what could have been, it makes us wish even more than we already did that there had been a Season 7 of The Resident. TV Insider recently spoke with co-creator Amy Holden Jones and executive producer Andrew Chapman about what would have happened next if the show had continued, and it included weddings, possible major returns, and so much more. But instead, the medical drama only ran six seasons on Fox. It premiered in 2018, then what ended up being the series finale aired in January 2023. News of the cancellation came three months after the Season 6 finale, which was crafted by Jones and Chapman to also serve as a series ender, aired. “The politics of it were very complicated because we were owned by a studio that was run by ABC but we were on the air on Fox, so that split made for very difficult contract negotiations every year,” Chapman tells TV Insider.

'The Resident' Creators Reveal if They Could Make a Revival or Spin-Off Work for the Cancelled Medical Procedural
Image
After six seasons on Fox, the decision was made in 2023 to cancel the medical drama, The Resident. The show premiered in 2018 and garnered a decent following before its run was abruptly cut short. Prior to the show's cancellation, speculation was quite high, and The Resident featured atop the standings for shows which viewers wanted to save. That did not materialize at the time, but now, those conversations have been reignited.

Two years after its cancellation, co-creator Amy Holden Jones and executive producer Andrew Chapman recently spoke about what would have happened had the show persisted into a seventh season. Speaking in a conversation with TV Insider, Jones revealed that should a revival become a possibility, much of the show's cast are willing to return to their scrubs, saying,

“I think we would love — and everybody involved would love — to just go back into the show. Unlike some of these spin-offs,...

‘The Resident’ Bosses on Revival and Spinoff Chances & Ideas
Image
It’s been over two years since The Resident was canceled after six seasons, but with how popular revivals and spinoffs have become, it’s impossible not to wonder if it could come back in some way. And that’s exactly what TV Insider asked co-creator Amy Holden Jones and executive producer Andrew Chapman when we recently spoke with them about what would’ve happened if there had been a Season 7. “I think we would love — and everybody involved would love — to just go back into the show,” said Jones. “Unlike some of these spinoffs, a lot of the cast would come and so we could return to the same world if we wanted to.” If there was just going to be a spinoff, both Jones and Chapman agree that Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played surgeon Aj Austin, “would be great.” “Having him being the lead doctor and then you’d...

‘The Resident’ Bosses Reveal Season 7 Plans If Series Wasn’t Canceled: Weddings, Returns & More
Image
It’s been over two years since The Resident was canceled after six seasons on Fox, a decision that came months after the finale aired. Fortunately, executive producers Amy Holden Jones and Andrew Chapman had crafted the Season 6 finale to also serve as a series ender in case. “There was a lot good in that last season,” Jones tells TV Insider. And Chapman agrees, adding, “I was pretty proud of that finale, given that it both served as a potential season ender and a potential series ender at the same time. It kind of worked.” But there were so many stories that could have still been explored if the show had gotten a seventh season. And since we’re still wondering what we could have seen, we turned to co-creator Jones and executive producer Chapman for answers. Read on for the scoop (and stay tuned for more). When we talked about the finale,...

The Criterion Channel’s June Programming Features Alan Rudolph, Johnnie To, Gene Hackman & More
Image
When I spoke to Alan Rudolph a couple months ago, he confirmed that Criterion had sought to release his Remember My Name but were held up by music rights––a situation so complicated that a lawyer hired by the director himself simply gave up. I like to think something’s changed in less than 60 days: the Criterion Channel will stream Remember My Name as part of a quartet featuring Afterglow, Trouble In Mind, and Breakfast of Champions, the latter recently given a 4K restoration. It’s part of a retrospective-heavy month that also includes a 12-title Johnnie To series, numerous films by René Clair, highlights of Amy Holden Jones and Ougie Pak, and Michael Winterbottom’s The Trip saga in both television and theatrical editions. Meanwhile, Gene Hackman is celebrated with six titles.

The Relic (1997) – What Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

How The Resident's Netflix Success Could Lead To A Revival
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag. The Resident has found streaming success on Netflix, despite being cancelled by Fox in 2023. The show ranked among Netflix's most-watched English-language shows in the United States. The show's future is uncertain as Fox did not renew it for a 7th season, but its popularity on Netflix may lead to a possible resurrection.

After ending with six seasons in 2023, The Resident's move to Netflix has made it a hit once again. The medical drama, which was created for Fox by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi, takes place at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital and follows a hard-nosed resident who is disillusioned with the business of medicine, as well as the staff that surrounds him. The show earned solid reviews and was a decent hit for the first few seasons. However, the ratings began to drop in the fourth season and the show never recovered,...

It was thrilling the first time I witnessed Ti West’s X. It was a fun slasher flick that offered a refreshing take on the sub-genre. And then came Pearl. The modern fright fest is the third collaboration between the amazing Mia Goth and Mr. West is a gift. I went into the third film wondering if it would connect as the trailer wasn’t what I expected. Thankfully, it was better than anticipated. The latest adventures of MaXXXine Minx (Goth) is a dream with an incredible atmospheric journey into the dark side of Hollywood in the 80’s. Amazing flick! While I dug it a bit more than our own Chris Bumbray did – you can read his take here – but I highly recommend going in as cold as possible.

This 2018 Fox Series Was The Best Medical Drama Since House
Image
The Resident challenges the American healthcare industry's bureaucracy and advocates for transparency and accountability within medical practices. Like House M.D., The Resident features real medical expertise behind the scenes, creating authentic and informative storylines about rare illnesses and medical procedures. The show fills the void left by House M.D. by focusing on ethical issues within healthcare, creating compelling drama while challenging the healthcare landscape.

When House M.D. ended its eight-season run in 2012, Fox faced a serious void in the medical drama department. Fortunately, the network revived the subgenre with The Resident in 2018. Created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi, The Resident takes place at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, where the radical new doctor Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czurchy) leads a dedicated staff of medical professionals.

Whereas House functioned as a darkly comedic, character-driven medical drama that focuses on the personal and...

And to Dr. Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal), one of the hospital’s baby-faced and optimistic new residents, it’s terrifying. While other residents seem to be rolling with the punches, Devon feels like he’s been put in the ring for a fight he can’t win. Then there’s Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood), a community hero — and Devon’s idol — who seemingly can do no wrong. But that might be because there’s a bit of a medical malpractice cover-up going on…

In The Resident, from creators Amy Holden Jones (Mystic Pizza), Hayley Schore (Call Jane), and Roshan Sethi (Call Jane), Devon learns the hard way what hospital life is really like.

After directing more than 45 features, Corman decided to create his own banner, which would go on to help jumpstart the careers of Jonathan Demme, Curtis Hanson and countless other talents.

“I made a picture for American International that made too much money, ‘The Wild Angels.

Best Horror Movies on Shudder Right Now
Image
Shudder is a streaming service that is specifically dedicated to the horror genre, so it’s only fitting that we here on Arrow in the Head should compile a list of the Best Horror Movies on Shudder Right Now. As with all streamers, Shudder has movies that come and go on a regular basis, but if you head over there today here are some of the best movies you can find on the service:

Night Of The Living Dead (1968)

Yes, George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead seems to be available on nearly every streaming service there is, and that’s because the movie is in the public domain due to the copyright notice accidentally being left off the film print. When you’re a streaming service that deals specifically with the horror genre, it would be insane if you didn’t have Night of the Living Dead...

The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The episode of Revisited covering The Slumber Party Massacre was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Let’s think for just a moment on the horror genre in the 1980s. Where does your mind take you? For me, slasher movies were the go-to genre of the decade, specifically the early years. They were flawed… yes, and mostly pretty bad, subjectively. But at the same time, they’re fun little thrill rides which deliver on the promise of the tropes and rules one would expect from these films. They all for the most part follow the same formula we are all too familiar with. You have your sex-crazed teenagers who spend their weekend fueling themselves with red cups of beer, doing drugs, and engaging in the occasional premarital sex. All the while there is a crazed killer on the loose,...

Tom Sizemore at an event for Red Planet (2000)
Last month, actor Tom Sizemore passed away from a brain aneurysm at the age of just 61. Directed by Peter Hyams from a screenplay that came from the combined forces of Amy Holden Jones, John Raffo, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver, The Relic was based on a novel by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. Will We See The Resident Season 7? Here's What We Know
Image
"The Resident" season 6 ended its relatively short run back in January, but Fox waited a long time to weigh in on the fate of the long-running series. At long last, it has been confirmed that this is the end for Conrad Hawkins and the rest of the staff at Chastain Memorial Hospital. Yes, sad to say for fans of the show, it will not be returning for a seventh season, so the season 6 finale will ultimately serve as the series finale.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has officially canceled the medical show after six full seasons and 107 episodes. The series was produced by 20th Century Television and was created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi. It's worth pointing out that "The Resident" season 6 was the shortest in the show's history at just 13 episodes, and that may have, in hindsight, been a bit of writing on the wall.

The Resident Season 7 Not Moving Forward At Fox
Image
The Resident season 7 will not be moving forward after months of speculation about the show's status on Fox. The speculation about the show's future reached a new level in January, as series co-creator Amy Holden Jones said the season 6 finale was written so that it could work as a final farewell. In the finale, Conrad and Billie relationship's relationship is solidified. For other characters, like Leela, she became an attending surgeon. The central hospital, which had helped so many patients over the years, survived another looming crisis and kept its doors open.

After several disappointing The Resident season 7 updates, Fox has officially cancelled the medical drama. According to TVLine, the confirmation follows several grim reports about the chances of the long-running series returning. The show's sets and props had already been sold off. Insiders at the network have likewise noted that The Resident was done long before the news was made official.

‘The Resident’ Canceled After Six Seasons on Fox
Image
The Resident is no more at Fox.

The network has canceled its medical drama after six seasons. The decision comes nearly three months after The Resident, produced by Disney’s 20th Television, finished its 13-episode sixth season.

Speculation about the show’s fate has swirled since the season — the shortest of the show’s six — ended. The Resident had its lowest-rated season to date among adults 18-49, averaging a 0.53 rating in the key ad demographic over seven days of viewing (versus 0.7 last season). According to Fox, the show’s cross-platform audience of 6.9 million viewers was down 12 percent from the 2021-22 season.

When The Resident premiered in January 2018, 20th TV was still part of the 21st Century Fox family that included the broadcast network. A month earlier, though, Fox and Disney had agreed to a $71 billion sale of the studio and several cable assets to Disney; that deal closed in 2019.

Since then,...

‘The Resident’ Canceled After 6 Seasons at Fox
Image
Our time with the docs at Chastain is officially over. Fox has canceled The Resident after six seasons. The news comes months after the Season 6 finale aired on January 17. Season 6 averaged a 0.5 L7 rating in Adults 18-49 (down 27 percent from a year ago) and 6.9 million total multiplatform viewers (down 12 percent). Compared to its first season in 2018, which ended up being its last (consisting of 13 episodes) was down 69 percent and 35 percent in the aforementioned rating and viewership. Because they didn’t know if they’d be renewed, Chapman and creator Amy Holden Jones crafted the last episode of Season 6 to serve as a series finale. “[We] really thought hard about how we would construct storylines that would give closure to the season, but if it had to be a series finale, would give our audience ...

The Resident Star Strikes Hopeful Tone About Season 7 Renewal Chances
Image
The Resident star Ian Anthony Dale strikes a hopeful tone about the show's season 7 renewal chances. Co-creator Amy Holden Jones said the season 6 finale was written to be suitable as a final farewell. The episode, titled "All Hands on Deck", provided a sense of resolution to the Conrad and Billie relationship as the two experienced a major milestone. Elsewhere, Leela became an attending surgeon, and the central hospital survived another potential crisis and ensured that it would remain to help those in need. Still, according to executive producer Andrew Chapman, the fate of The Resident won't be confirmed until later in April or May.

Dale, who plays Dr. James Yamada, spoke about the possibility of The Resident season 7 in an interview with TV Insider. The actor acknowledged some of the disappointing news about the show's future. But as he talked about his experience and working with the cast, Dale struck...

‘Slumber Party Massacre III’ – Revisiting the Slasher Franchise’s Overlooked 1990 Sequel
Image
Even in a generally well-liked horror franchise like Slumber Party Massacre, there is still that one entry that fans do not rally around as much as others. And among the four films produced so far, Sally Mattison’s Slumber Party Massacre III is routinely slept on. However, this series’ third depiction of a sleepover gone terribly awry not only brings back the harshness of the original film, it also delivers an unusual perspective.

The first slasher trend had all but ended by 1990, but unseasonableness has never stopped a producer like Roger Corman. And as with the previous Slumber Party Massacre films, the third was directed and written by women, including a script by the late Catherine Cyran. This rushed, micro-budget film works from the same familiar prompt; a male assailant stalks and kills hapless, scantily clad women as they gather for what should have been a night of fun and play.

The Resident Season 7 Gets Disappointing Renewal Updates
Image
The Resident season 7 looks unlikely, as the medical drama gets two disappointing updates. After The Resident's season 6 finale in January, co-creator Amy Holden Jones said it was written to be suitable as the show's last episode. By season 6's conclusion, Conrad and Billie shared, 'I love you,' for the first time, Leela became an attending surgeon, and the central hospital survived another potential crisis.

Now, a Resident insider told TVLine that the show is "essentially done." Fox has yet to confirm The Resident's future, maintaining that no official decision has been made regarding renewal or cancellation. But it's one of the shows that are on the bubble, and this latest update comes after a Georgia-based estate sale purveyor announced that it would host a “major network medical drama prop and liquidation” sale.
