Helen Grayco, the pop singer and actress who appeared on records, tours, radio programs and TV shows as a classy contrast to her zany bandleader husband, Spike Jones, has died. She was 97.

Grayco died Saturday of cancer at her home in Los Angeles, her son, longtime Creative Arts Emmy Awards producer Spike Jones Jr., told The Hollywood Reporter.

Jones Sr. was about to embark on a tour with his City Slickers bandmates when he approached Grayco with a job offer after watching her perform with Stan Kenton’s orchestra at the Hollywood Palladium in 1946.

“I was terribly insulted when Spike first asked to hire me,” Grayco recalled in a 2009 interview. “He had just done ‘Cocktails for Two’ and all that stuff that he was known for. ‘I don’t know where I could possibly fit in in your group. I’m not a comedienne,...

Harvey Mason Jr. Officially Named President/CEO Of Recording Academy
Image
The Recording Academy’s Board of Trustees has officially appointed Harvey Mason Jr. as the Academy’s President/CEO, effective June 1.

Mason had been in the position on an unpaid, interim basis since January 2020. He was named to the post when former president Deborah Dugan was put on administrative leave 10 days before the 2020 Grammy Awards. She was terminated on March 3 of that year and has since sued the Recording Academy.

Ironically, Dugan was brought in following the departure of former CEO Neil Portnow, who resigned following controversial comments in 2018, when he answered a question about the Academy’s allegedly sexist voting and lack of female representation by saying female artists needed to “step up.”

Mason was formerly the chair of the Academy’s Board, a position he will now relinquish.

In a joint statement, search committee co-chairs John Burk and Leslie Ann Jones praised Mason. “We are delighted that Harvey...

Former Grammys CEO Neil Portnow Calls Rape Allegation ‘Ludicrous and Untrue’
Neil Portnow at an event for The 48th Annual Grammy Awards (2006)
Neil Portnow, who stepped down as CEO of the Recording Academy in 2019, called a new allegation of rape “ludicrous and untrue” in a statement on Wednesday. Dugan’s complaint claimed that members of the Recording Academy board informed her of the accusation against Portnow in May 2019. Though the artist who...

Review: “Fanfare” by Sample Logic
Every once and a while, a new sample library comes along for us composers that changes everything, or is significant in its contribution to our arsenal of tools at our disposal. In this SCOREcast product review, we chose to take a look at the new Sample Logic Ni Kontakt-based library Fanfare in an attempt to discover if this was one of those libraries.

I have a pretty extensive background with the marching band / drum corps idiom, and my principal instrument is the trumpet, so imagine my excitement when Sample Logic announced the “Definitive Marching Brass Library” in Fanfare. There are not many libraries out there are for marching brass, and certainly none with the pedigree of the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps brass behind it—the only other one being… well… a bit antiquated at this point.

So…before I began exploring Fanfare, I went to Sample Logic’s...
