Alice Cooper, Elton John, Judas Priest Pay Tribute to Ozzy Osbourne: “The Whole World Is Mourning Ozzy Tonight”
Image
Some of the biggest names in the music and entertainment industry are paying tribute to Ozzy Osbourne after his family confirmed the news of his death earlier Tuesday.

Osbourne died at 76 following years of health issues, just weeks after he played his final show in Birmingham, United Kingdom, where he reunited with Black Sabbath. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time,” Osbourne’s family said.

“The whole world is mourning Ozzy tonight,” Alice Cooper said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Over his long career, he earned immense respect among his peers and from fans around the world as an unmatched showman and cultural icon. I always saw Ozzy as a cross between the prince of darkness, which is the persona his fans saw, and the court jester.

“That was the side that his family and friends saw,...

“Being the voice of Foreigner has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Hansen said in a statement. “But it’s time to pass the mic. Luis has the voice, the energy, and the soul to carry these songs into the future. I couldn’t be prouder to hand this off to him.”

The Canadian leg kicks off October 21st in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and runs through November 7th in Kelowna, British Columbia — following the band’s previously announced US shows, with tickets available here.

“I was most impressed by Geordie’s performances of Jukebox Hero — The Musical in Canada,” stated Foreigner’s Mick Jones. “He is not only a consummate vocalist, but a verified Broadway actor to boot. We look forward to welcoming him at our shows on Foreigner’s 2025 Canadian tour.”

Foreigner’s Lou Gramm Rages Against Rock Hall: ‘The Rug Was Pulled From Under Our Feet’
Image
Foreigner’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year was the culmination of a nearly two-decade lobbying effort that roped in everyone from Mark Ronson and Slash to Dave Grohl, Jack Black, and Paul McCartney when they finally made the ballot this year. And when it actually happened, original singer Lou Gramm was ecstatic. “I’m thrilled that we’re finally a part of it,” he told Rolling Stone in April. “For a good number of years, we were not. I racked my brain trying...

Cher on Her ‘Love-Hate Relationship’ With Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction, Peter Frampton on Being ‘Scared’ to Come, and Other Highlights From the Cleveland Ceremony
Image
Backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, Cher confirmed that she had once declared she “didn’t give a flying fuck if I got in.” But if the pop superstar (pictured above in an opening duet of “Believe” with Dua Lipa) found her way toward being completely glee about the Saturday night occasion, who else was going to be in anything less than full-on Thanksgiving mode?

Every Rock Hall of Fame induction ceremony has its own distinctive vibe. And during the 2024 event, a marathon five-and-a-half hour concert at Cleveland’s sold-out Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, gratitude was the prevailing theme from presenters, performers and inductees alike.

With one exception that was not Cher, there was almost no infighting or drama leading up to (or at) the ceremony, and the event itself focused on the artists and music. The special guests and collaborators felt well-matched, and the presenters — including...

Foreigner’s Lou Gramm, Rick Wills, Al Greenwood Reunite for Rock Hall of Fame
Image
Foreigner scored more hits than just about any other rock band from their era. But they were never a favorite of critics, and they had to wait 22 years to enter the Hall of Fame after they first reached their period of eligibility. Original frontman Lou Gramm feels the massive success of their 1984 ballad “I Want To Know What Love Is” played a big role in shaping their reputation.

“I love the song, but it pigeonholed us into something that we were not,” he told Rolling Stone earlier this year. “I...

Kelly Clarkson, Sammy Hagar, Slash, Demi Lovato Honor Foreigner at Hall of Fame Induction
Image
Kelly Clarkson, Sammy Hagar, Slash, Chad Smith, and Demi Lovato came together to salute Foreigner at the group’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony Saturday night in Cleveland.

The mini-set focused more as a tribute to the band, with many of the original members not appearing onstage. Mick Jones, who has Parkinson’s disease, stayed home, with his daughter Annabelle Dexter-Jones taking the stage during the band’s speech. Dennis Elliot announced earlier this week that he’d be skipping the ceremony as well.

Foreigner Unveil Previously Unreleased Song “Turning Back the Time” with Lou Gramm on Vocals: Stream
Image
Foreigner have unearthed a previously unreleased song called “Turning Back the Time,” which serves the title of an upcoming greatest-hits collection. The track dates back to the 1990s, and features the band’s classic singer Lou Gramm on vocals.

The Turning Back the Time best-of collection, set to arrive October 4th via Rhino (pre-order here), contains 18 songs in total, including classics like “Cold as Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” and “Jukebox Heroes,” among others.

The song “Turning Back the Time” was initially recorded as a demo in 1996 after guitarist Mick Jones and songwriter Marti Frederiksen had collaborated on songs for the 1998 movie Strange Fruit. The two decided to continue to write and record new tunes for Foreigner, with the band’s then-singer Gramm handling vocals.

According to Jones, “Turning Back the Time” isn’t the only unreleased song featuring Gramm, who parted...

Foreigner Unearths Nostalgic ‘Turning Back the Time’ in Honor of Rock Hall Induction

In honor of Foreigner’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction this fall, the band opened the vault for “Turning Back the Time.”

Featuring Lou Gramm and Mick Jones, the previously unreleased rocker is a nostalgic reflection of the past. Gramm drops references to the Beatles’ legendary 1964 performances on Ed Sullivan (“I saw the Beatles on my black and white TV/It changed everything deep down inside of me”) and Foreigner’s late Seventies streak (“Those ‘Double Vision’ days”).

In an interview with Billboard, Jones revealed that “Turning Back...

‘Everybody’s In LA’ Host John Mulaney Says “We Can’t Get Renewed” As Comedian Reveals Who Didn’t Want To Appear On Live Netflix Show
Image
John Mulaney’s wildly chaotic six-episode run of Everybody’s In LA featured old punks, phone-ins and just about every top comedian in the states.

But the show, which ran for six episodes around the Netflix Is A Joke Festival between May 3 and May 10, was originally designed as a variety show. “I wanted everyone to go make what they wanted and I will put it on. We can’t get renewed. We should actually be a variety show,” he said.

Mulaney was asked why he wanted to make a show that was largely difficult? He said that Netflix approached him as they wanted to do something live across the comedy festival but weren’t entirely sure what. “One idea they had was stand-up at the Geffen Theater. Only with only David doing stand-up, just Laura Nyro stories. He had a tight hour,” Mulaney joked. “I liked that it was an...

Lou Gramm on Foreigner’s Long-Awaited Rock Hall Induction: ‘Justice Has Been Done’
Image
If you turn on classic-rock radio anywhere in America and listen for more than a few minutes, you’re likely to hear a Foreigner song. “Cold as Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “Feels Like the First Time,” “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” “Urgent,” and “I Want to Know What Love Is” topped the charts in the Seventies and Eighties, and really never went away. But rock critics never understood their appeal. “I like rock and roll so much that I catch myself getting off on ‘Hot Blooded,’ a typical piece of...

Mick Jones on Foreigner’s Long-Awaited Rock Hall Induction: “We Are Proud”
Image
Foreigner are finally heading into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, after being eligible for induction for more than 20 years. The legendary rock act was announced on Sunday night (April 21st) as part of the institution’s Class of 2024 alongside Ozzy Osbourne, Cher, and more.

While truly deserving, Foreigner may have been helped out by a Mark Ronson-led campaign (see below) featuring Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, Slash, Chad Smith, and Jack Black calling for the hit-making classic rock band to be inducted this year.

Guitarist Mick Jones acknowledged the honor with a statement listing the band’s fellow classic members Lou Gramm, Dennis Elliot, Al Greenwood, Rick Wills, the late Ed Gagliardi, and the late Ian McDonald. The Future of Classic Rock Tours: One or Two Surviving Members…or None?
Image
In the last few years, Cj Strock, a talent agent who worked with the later incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band, faced an unusual dilemma. As seen in catalog and merch sales, a market still existed for the Allmans, their quintessentially Southern rock & roll, and their improvisational live shows, but the band itself didn’t exist: They formally gave their last performances in 2014, and Gregg Allman died of liver cancer three years later.

With an eye toward introducing new fans to the band, Strock had an idea — essentially a new Allmans.

Hard-Fi’s Richard Archer: ‘It’s like we went a bit to the left so the right went Nazi Germany’
Serenay Sarikaya in Fi (2017)
For a second, it’s like 2005 has barged into the pub demanding respect. Richard Archer, singer with Staines’ indie rock massive Hard-Fi, arrives at a Thames-side Richmond boozer with his bright blue eyes flashing and the jaw-length hair he sported pre-pandemic shorn back to his classic indie bovver-boy cut. He’s as energised as he ever was when leading some of the most raucous gig scenes this writer saw that entire disrespected decade, when entire Academies would be bouncing right back to the (drunk dry) bar to clock-off clubland punk anthems “Hard To Beat” and “Living For The Weekend”. He was champion of the skint but shot-crazed, a roaring mouthpiece for the left-behind street stars of surveillance culture Britain.

The haircut is appropriate: it’s now 17 years since the band’s debut album Stars of CCTV ram-raided the UK charts, but Hard-Fi are undergoing a Semtex blast of popularity.

A new documentary, Rebel Dread, will examine the influence of Don Letts, the British filmmaker, and musician who captured some of the most significant footage of punk’s first wave and cofounded Big Audio Dynamite with the Clash’s Mick Jones.

“Punk rock’s a living thing,” Letts says in the film’s trailer. “It’s about turning problems into assets. And as a first-generation, British-born Black, that’s something I know a lot about.” The 30-second clip features footage of the Clash and England’s Black community in the Seventies.

Rebel Dread review – the eloquent self-making of punk film-maker Don Letts
Don Letts
A key cultural evangelist, the raconteur talks through his creative career since recording the 1970s punk scene on his Super-8 camera

It’s an intense, 86-minute pleasure to be in the company of Don Letts: DJ, film-maker, musician, social commentator and thoroughly engaging raconteur. Every word that comes out of his mouth is a manifesto for humanity and creativity. “Punk rock’s a living thing,” he says, “something to look forward to, not look back on.”

Letts became part of the punk scene in late-70s London, befriending everyone from Malcolm McLaren to Bob Marley; he was DJing at the Roxy in Covent Garden, and with his pioneering choice of reggae records, Letts almost single-handedly made allies of punk and Jamaican music and struck a powerful cultural blow against racism. He also, with his Super-8 camera, shot vivid and intense footage of bands including the Sex Pistols and the...

Julian Lennon honored one of his “all time favorite musical heroes,” Eddie Van Halen, after the guitarist died Tuesday, October 6th, following a battle with cancer.

In a post on Facebook, Lennon recalled meeting Van Halen at a concert backstage where they “hugged like long-lost brothers.” As Lennon recalled, the pair spent the rest of the night “in the dressing room shower (fully clothed, I might add!) drinking Jack Daniels, straight from the bottle, and talked about music and what the future might hold.”

Their paths would cross again in...

Foreigner and Van Halen released their debut albums within a year of each other and both bands dominated the singles charts for years to come. So when Van Halen enlisted Foreigner guitarist and kindred spirit Mick Jones to produce 5150, their first record with Sammy Hagar singing, they knew they could trust him. He helped them refashion their sound into something a little more mature, and the album became a Number One hit, thanks to singles like “Dreams,” “Best of Both Worlds,” and “Why Can’t This Be Love.” Here, Jones...

Viv Albertine TV Series In The Works From ‘Carol’ Outfit Number 9 & ‘Patrick Melrose’ Producer Rachael Horovitz
Image
The life of Viv Albertine, the punk musician and guitarist of The Slits, is getting the TV treatment after Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley’s Number 9 Films and Rachael Horovitz’ West Fourth Films teamed to acquire rights to her memoirs.

Albertine has published two autobiographical books, Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys in 2014, and To Throw Away Unopened in 2018. They chronicled how she was a founding member of all-girl punk band The Slits in the late 1970s, becoming a close friend of both Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash. In 1976, she helped form The Flowers of Romance with Sid Vicious and Susie Souix. Alongside music, she has worked as a director and also collaborated with Joanna Hogg, composing the soundtrack for Arichpelago, and starring in Exhibition.

The producers said they acquired the rights in a competitive situation, and will now develop a limited TV series from the material.

The 14 Craziest Musician Acting Cameos
Image
Looking back at some of the strangest cameos in film and TV history, we were struck by how many of them were by musicians. It makes sense. After all, musicians are already out of place among actors on a TV or film set. What they bring to the table is different from what actors bring, in terms of star quality, charisma, self-expression and established personae. If you’re familiar with both the musician’s work and the characters in a movie or TV show (and the actors who play them...

Brian Howe Dies: Former Bad Company Singer Was 66
Image
Brian Howe, who was Bad Company’s lead singer for eight years and sang on a mid-’80s Ted Nugent’s album, died Wednesday of a heart attack while en route to a hospital near his home in Lake Placid, Fl. He was 66.

England native Howe took over for original Bad Company vocalist Paul Rodgers in 1986 and remained with the band for eight years. Recruited by Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke on a recommendation by Foreigner’s Mick Jones, Howe sang on and toured behind four of the band’s studio albums — three of which went gold — and its 1993 live disc. During his tenure, the group racked up eight top 10 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, including the No. 1 hits “Holy Water” (1990) and “How About That” (1992) — the latter topping that chart for six weeks.

Before joining the British hard rock band, Howe sang lead on Nugent’s 1984 album Penetrator.

The Clash’s ‘London Calling’: 10 Things You Didn’t Know
Clash (2016)
This month marks the 40th anniversary of the Clash’s London Calling. Well, sort of. The album came out in England on December 14th, 1979, but didn’t cross the Atlantic to America until January 1980. That’s just a matter of weeks, but it’s the reason that NME has called it one of the single best albums of the Seventies and Rolling Stone labeled it the best album of the Eighties.

It’s a rare album that can considered among the best works of two separate decades, especially ones as...

Flashback: Billy Joel Hits Number One With ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’
Billy Joel
Billy Joel rattling off historic names and events most people under 30 have never heard of hardly seemed like the formula for a hit song, especially in 1989 when the charts were dominated by the likes of Poison, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson, Debbie Gibson, and New Kids on the Block. But it was 30 years ago this week that his history lesson/rock song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” knocked Milli Vanilli’s “Blame It on the Rain” off the top spot to become the number-one song on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The...
