Wickeds Release Makes Sam Raimi's 'Oz the Great and Powerful' a Disney+ Streaming Hit
Image
Although director Sam Raimi is known for his horror prowess, dating back to his directorial debut with the classic Evil Dead, there was a long 15-year period in which Raimi focused on other genres. Now that the acclaimed Spider-Man director is setting his sights back on making horror films with his upcoming film Send Help, one of his feel-good fantasy genre films is charting in the top 10 movies on Disney+. However, it is not a surprise that the release of Wicked has brought people's attention back to The Wizard of Oz franchise.

Raimi's forgotten 2013 The Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz the Great and Powerful, starring James Franco as a circus magician lost in the land of Oz, is currently number four in the top 10 movies streaming on Disney+. The director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is getting some extra love from Disney viewers after the explosive release of Wicked,...

Channing Tatum & Scarlett Johansson's 'Fly Me to the Moon' Streaming on Apple TV+ in December
Image
Everyone knows NASA was a notoriously boring place in the summer of 1969. Nothing going on but smoking and stirring Tang. Thankfully, in Apple TV+'s Fly Me To The Moon, Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson inject some human drama into the horn-rimmed hallways of Merritt Island's Launch Operations Center. The Rom-Com-Dram, which dropped in theaters this past July - and spent an unusually long time in "rent or buy" limbo - is finally getting a streaming date this December 6th. Per the synopsis:

"Brought in to fix NASAs public image, sparks fly in all directions as marketing wunderkind Kelly Jones wreaks havoc on launch director Cole Daviss already difficult task. When the President deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is directed to stage a fake moon landing as back-up and the countdown truly begins"

Taking a lighthearted romp through one of the classic crackpot conspiracy theories, Fly Me To The Moon...

The Last Stop In Yuma County Review: A Riveting Debut Crime Thriller That Is Full Of Great Tension
Image
Intense tension in the film builds steadily towards an unexpected climax. The film's ensemble cast shines, with storytelling that crafts a tense and engaging narrative in a single setting. Despite minor flaws, The Last Stop in Yuma County remains captivating, with an impressive debut effort.

Francis Galluppi's debut film, The Last Stop in Yuma County, is a gripping indie crime thriller that immediately grabs your attention and steadily intensifies throughout. While it slightly runs out of gas towards the end, it remains an enjoyable ride worth revisiting. The story follows a young knife salesman, played by Jim Cummings (The Beta Test), who finds himself stranded at a remote gas station while on his way to celebrate his daughter's birthday. As he waits for the fuel delivery in the adjoining diner, he befriends the waitress, Charlotte, portrayed by Jocelin Donahue (The House of the Devil).

The Last Stop In Yuma County's Jim Cummings On "Cowardly" Protagonist & Challenges Of Indie Filmmaking
Image
Jim Cummings both stars in and executive produces The Last Stop in Yuma County, diving into a tense hostage situation. Cummings embraced the challenge of playing a cowardly character in the film and enjoyed the camaraderie with the cast members. Though drawn to directing, Cummings found acting in a project he didn't create to be liberating, acknowledging the challenges in indie filmmaking.

Acclaimed indie filmmaker Jim Cummings is stepping in front of the camera for the crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County. Since making his feature directorial debut with the movie adaptation of his Sundance award-winning short Thunder Road, Cummings has largely made a name for himself as a multihyphenate filmmaker, including writing and directing the acclaimed 2020 horror-comedy The Wolf of Snow Hollow and co-writing/co-directing the 2021 erotic thriller The Beta Test, on which he also was the editor.

The Last Stop In Yuma County's Richard Brake Talks "Calculating" Villain & Love Of Genre Films
Image
Richard Brake shines as a calm and calculating villain in The Last Stop in Yuma County. The movie's script captivated Brake similarly to his hit 2022 film Barbarian, keeping him engrossed as he read it like a novel. Brake loved working with Jocelin Donahue again and shared his emotions about Brad Dourif's retirement.

Richard Brake continues his terrifying villainous reign on screen with The Last Stop in Yuma County. Since making his breakout turns in Batman Begins as Wayne family killer Joe Chill and the 2005 Doom movie adaptation as Portman, the Welsh actor has steadily built an impressive filmography, largely comprised of antagonistic characters. Some of his more notable include Rob Zombie's 31, in which he starred as Doom-Head, Game of Thrones, in which he was the original Night King actor, and the breakout 2022 horror hit Barbarian.

The Last Stop in Yuma County Review: A Darkly Funny Shoot ’Em Up in the Arizona Desert
Image
Francis Galluppi’s tense and darkly funny The Last Stop in Yuma County begins with an unnamed traveling knife salesman (Jim Cummings) rolling up at the titular Arizona rest stop, looking to fill his tank. The place is nothing more than a couple of gas pumps, a tiny motel, and an old-school diner, complete with red leather booths and an infinite supply of strong black coffee. Despite the locale’s humble appearance, it’s about to become the site of a thrilling showdown that finds a fascinating mix of misfit characters caught in the crossfire.

The attendant, Vernon (Faizon Love), gives our protagonist the bad news first: They don’t have a drop of gas left to sell and the next stop isn’t for a hundred miles. There’s no way the salesman’s car will make it that far, so he’s stuck here until the next delivery arrives.

The Last Stop in Yuma County Review
Image
Plot: While stranded at a rural Arizona rest stop, a traveling salesman is thrust into a dire hostage situation by the arrival of two bank robbers with no qualms about using cruelty-or cold, hard steel-to protect their bloodstained fortune.

Review: Having the same style as a famous filmmaker can be both an advantage and disadvantage. In many ways, The Last Stop In Yuma County reminded me of Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. It’s coming together of many stories and a rewatch giving so much context to every little event meant a certain level of skill. Sure, it may look like No Country For Old Men (and even feature a bit part with Gene Jones) but it’s very much its own film. And now that director Francis Galluppi has been chosen to make an Evil Dead movie by Sam Raimi himself, all eyes will be on Yuma County. But...

This is one of these super disgusting, gory-as-f&!k, body horror creations that may make you puke. In the 1960s, a nurse's last day is ruined when a crazy doctor inadvertently creates a cyst monster that terrorizes the office. Everybody scream! The cyst is loose! The cult horror stars Greg Sestero, Eva Habermann, Jason Douglas, Gene Jones, George Hardy, Darren Ewing, Francesca Santoro, Keturah Branch, and Kyle Roberts as the Cyst Monster. Hell yes - man in suit! My goodness this looks so revolting. But it might be ridiculous fun? Or not? Only one way to find out ha! Dive right in. But please make sure you wear a mask. Here's the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Tyler Russell's Cyst,...

Don't Make Eye Contact with This Creature in Tyler Russell's Cyst
Cyst is a gooey horror film from director Tyler Russell (Texas Cotton). This title had its World Premiere at Fantastic Fest this past September. Now, the film will be searching for a wider release, with help from Raven Banner Entertainment.  In the story, a laser beam creates a monster in a doctor's office. With no way to destroy this thing, this monster goes on a rampage, destroying everything and everyone. Very much a blend of horror and sci-fi, this feature stars: Greg Sestero, (The Disaster Artist) Jason Douglas ("The Walking Dead"), Evan Habermann and Gene Jones. A preview of the film's impending launch is hosted here. Several stills have been released for the film, which runs a lean sixty-nine minutes. The stills show the monster and how each character is attacked by this gruesome (yet small) beast. Utilizing practical effects, this feature does look impressive. Cyst does not have a release date as of yet.

Frightfest 2020: ‘Cyst’ Review
Image
Stars: Greg Sestero, Eva Habermann, Jason Douglas, Gene Jones, George Hardy, Darren Ewing, Francesca Santoro, Kyle Roberts | Written by Tyler Russell, Andy Silverman | Directed by Tyler Russell

It’s the early 1960s and a small-town doctor invents a machine that uses laser technology to remove skin abnormalities. He pulls out all the stops to make sure his final chance to get the patent on his ‘Get Gone’ appliance goes smoothly. But his nurse thinks the contraption is dangerous and not ready. The struggle between the two causes the apparatus to malfunction creating a giant cyst monster that goes on a bloody rampage.

Very much in the vein of the William Castle and Rgoer Corman flicks of the 50s and 60s, Cyst is – like the remake of The Brain That Wouldn’t Die which also screened as part of Frightfest – very much an homage to the films of that period, with set and costume design,...

Olivia Cooke Does Her Best To Rise Above “Katie Says Goodbye”
Having premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival way back in 2016, it has been a long road for Katie Says Goodbye. The movie spent part of 2016 and almost all of 2017 on the festival circuit, before opening internationally last year in certain places. Now, here in 2019, it finally gets a release, coming after writer/director Wayne Roberts’ subsequent film The Professor has already come and gone last month. Is this flick any better? Well, no, not really. There’s a really great performance at the center from Olivia Cooke, but it’s surrounded by one of the most miserable experiences you can imagine. A movie is a character study, one mired in pain and largely unnecessary suffering. Set in an unnamed part of the American Southwest, one somewhat lost in time, Katie (Cooke) is a seventeen year old making her way as best she can. A waitress in a diner run...

[Note: With the film out now on DVD in the UK, here's a reposting of our review of The Old Man & the Gun from its brief cinematic showing]

David Lowery returns rather quickly to the realm of cinema after his stoically ambitious loved or loathed romantic drama A Ghost Story with 70′s inspired and produced drama The Old Man & The Gun.

Tom Hanks at an event for Larry Crowne (2011)
Tom Hanks Wanted as Colonel Tom Parker in New Elvis Biopic
Tom Hanks at an event for Larry Crowne (2011)
It's beginning to look like Tom Hanks' next role will be Elvis Presley's legendary manager Colonel Tom Parker. The actor is currently in talks with Baz Luhrmann to join the cast of his upcoming Elvis biopic. Details are scarce at the moment, but it is believed that the director is looking for a young and unknown actor to take on the lead role with a goal to begin production by the end of the year. Luhrmann is directing the biopic from a script that he and Craig Pearce wrote.

This won't be the first time that Tom Hanks has taken on a role in the music business for a movie. He famously played Mr. White, who was a fictional A&R man for Playtone Records, in 1996's That Thing You Do! As for playing a real person, Hanks has tackled that numerous times in his lengthy career and most...

“The Standoff At Sparrow Creek” Is A Claustrophobic And Compelling Mystery
Here’s a film where the term “they don’t make em like this anymore” really does apply. A largely single location independent drama with stylized dialogue and a less than politically correct edge? Mixing David Mamet with Quentin Tarantino would normally mean an indie with a wise ass streak and a modern sensibility. Here, with The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, what we have is something far more old fashioned than that. Essentially a whodunit, this flick offers up a compelling tale that keeps you wired in right up until the very end. With a single minded focus, it tells a razor sharp story about as well as it can be told, complete with a hell of an ending, to boot. A drama/mystery, the movie is literally a standoff. Gannon (James Badge Dale) is a former cop who lives in the woods and is a member of a local militia.

Review: ‘The Standoff at Sparrow Creek’ Shows the Monstrousness of Complicity
The film begins in total silence to the point where you wonder if something went wrong with the sound. The camera pans through still trees until finding Gannon (James Badge Dale) on the ground with rifle ready to take out the deer we can assume is somewhere out of frame. It’s only when we hear the pop of guns in the distance that we realize first-time writer/director Henry Dunham has been meticulously ensuring that we process exactly what he needs us to before heading towards the solitary locale we’ll spend the rest of The Standoff at Sparrow Creek‘s short yet tense 88-minute runtime. Having Gannon visible when those blasts go off is deliberate because there must be no question that he’s the one man we can implicitly trust.

Why? Because he’s soon to meet-up with the other members of his documented civilian militia inside...

First Trailer for Major Fest Discovery 'The Standoff at Sparrow Creek'
"Do you have any idea what's going on out there?" Rlje has debuted the first trailer for one of this year's big discoveries, a contained thriller titled The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, the feature debut of Henry Dunham. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, then played to rave reviews at Fantastic Fest, earning some of the best buzz out of both fests as a major find. It's a deviously smart film about a group of men in a militia who meet in a warehouse after a shooting, only to discover that one of their guns is missing. They begin to accuse each other in an attempt to figure out who did it, and it gets even better as it goes on. This has been compared to Reservoir Dogs, but it's really something of its own and it's an incredible debut. Sparrow Creek stars James Badge Dale, Patrick Fischler,...
