The House Judiciary Committee is requesting a briefing from the heads of the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League on whether they should still get an antitrust exemption for coordinating TV broadcast rights, including a rule that allows for game blackouts.
The Sports Broadcasting Act gives leagues immunity for broadcasting deals for games on network television, including provisions that permit blackouts of home games in that team’s broadcast area. Such blackout requirements were meant to ensure that ticket sales remained robust in a market.
In letters sent on Monday, Judiciary Committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-Oh) and Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wi), who chairs an antitrust subcommittee, wrote that despite the rise of subscription services and online streaming, “it is sometimes more difficult and more expensive for some fans to watch their teams during the season. Trump ally Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) faced a court-ordered deposition on July 18 in connection with lawsuits that involve former Ohio State University wrestlers. The deposition explored allegations that Jordan turned a blind eye to the long-term sexual abuse the late team doctor Richard Strauss subjected them to.
Jordan, who served as the assistant wrestling coach from 1986 to 1993, was not named a defendant, but has been referenced in multiple lawsuits claiming that he knew about the abuse but failed to act. He has repeatedly denied knowledge of any abuse, maintaining that he has never heard or seen anything concerning.
The deposition took place almost a month after the release of the HBO Max documentary “Surviving Ohio State,” which focused on the scandal and highlighted Jordan’s role.
Jordan spokesperson Russell Dye said, “As everyone knows, Chairman Jordan never saw or heard of any abuse, and if he had, he would have dealt with it.

The latest entry in a genre one wishes weren’t so burgeoning is HBO’s Surviving Ohio State, following in the sadly necessary footsteps of documentaries about sexual abuse in the athletic departments at Michigan State (Athlete A and At the Heart of Gold) and Penn State (Happy Valley).
When Surviving Ohio State was announced, anticipation hinged on the participation of producer George Clooney and the possibility that exploring the abuses of Dr. Richard Strauss and alleged negligence by authority figures at Ohio State might topple Jim Jordan, Ohio Congressman and Trump lapdog.
If your interest in Surviving Ohio State revolves entirely around Jim Jordan-related schadenfreude, you can probably skip it. Jordan, who refused to participate in the documentary for self-evident reasons, comes across as heartless and negligent, but the doc lacks any sort of smoking gun likely to dissuade his dedicated constituents, who have known about all of these...

As Donald Trump demands that federal courts and judges get out of his way, Republicans in Congress seem prepared to use their powers to kneecap the judicial branch’s ability to check the president.
On Monday morning, House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) told Fox News that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has endorsed legislation crafted by the GOP that would stop “federal district judges [from] issuing injunctions applying to the entire country,” and limit them to “the parties of the case in that respective jurisdiction.” Rep. U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (Dem-CA) has introduced H.R. 791, the Foreign Anti-Digital Piracy Act (or Fadpa), to prevent foreign-run piracy sites from exploiting loopholes in U.S. law. The Act sets site-blocking laws that require U.S. internet providers to make “a good faith effort” to disable access to pirate websites.
Lofgren is Ranking Member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee and a senior member of the House Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet. After working for over a year with the tech, film, and television industries, she said, “we’ve arrived at a proposal that has a remedy for copyright infringers located overseas that does not disrupt the free internet except for the infringers.”

The first major drama of the new Congress took place as the House of Representatives sought to elect a new speaker, with Mike Johnson managing to secure a majority after finally winning over two holdouts.
The vote was 218 for Johnson and 215 for Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. All Democrats voted for Jeffries. After two Republican holdouts initially voted for other candidates, denying him a majority, Johnson huddled with them and, after a protracted period in which the first ballot was held open, they changed their votes for the Louisiana Republican.
Had no speaker been in place, House members cannot be sworn in and, technically the House could not conduct the business of certifying the results of the presidential election on Monday. Trump had endorsed Johnson, hoping to stave off the confusion of a January 6th without an elected speaker.

The House Republican caucus kicked off the 119th U.S. Congress with what is becoming a regular source of drama: a contentious speaker election.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) barely won reelection as House Speaker in the first ballot cast by representatives to determine who will lead the lower chamber in the next congressional cycle. The House GOP’s first attempt to elect a leader was almost foiled by defecting votes by Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), Ralph Norman (R-s.C.), and Keith Self (R-Texas), who voted for Reps. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.

Rep. Jim Jordan was a key figure in Jan. 6 and the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election, claiming there was widespread voter fraud despite all evidence to the contrary. So it’s certainly a change of tune when the Republican congressman acknowledges the 2024 election was free and fair. The notable difference between these two elections is, of course, that Jordan’s preferred candidate won.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are weighing in on the Venu Sports lawsuit, which could wind up before the Supreme Court.
Things have been a little quiet on the Venu Sports front of late. The service is still being blocked from launching by a preliminary injunction thanks to an antitrust lawsuit brought by Fubo and issued by U.S. District Court Judge Margaret Garnett. Now lawmakers are beginning to take an interest in the case. Reporting from Puck News indicates that the Department of Justice, as well as several Republican congressmen, are taking sides in the case, which could wind up before the Supreme Court before all is said and done.
Key Details: The Department of Justice is preparing an amicus brief to support the injunction decision. Republican congressmen have already filed a brief backing Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery. Venu still hopes to launch sometime before...

Conservatives have leveled plenty of ridiculous accusations against migrant communities. Donald Trump accused them of “poisoning the blood” of the nation. Tucker Carlson said they make the country “poorer, and dirtier, and more divided.” The Republican Party has largely adopted the racist great replacement conspiracy theory, and made a mythical “migrant crime wave” a central election issue. As if we needed more proof that right-wingers will do anything to malign migrants, they are now accusing immigrant communities of killing and eating beloved family pets.

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg told the House Judiciary Committee in a letter that the White House repeatedly pressured the social media giant for months to censor “certain Covid-19 content,” something he believes is wrong and is prepared to resist if it happens again.
The epistle is a boon for House Republicans, who are quick to believe that social media censors voices on the right. The Judiciary Committee chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan called it “a big win for free speech” with three takeaways: “1) Biden Harris. Admin pressured Facebook to censor Americans. 2) Facebook censored Americans. 3) Facebook throttled the Hunter Biden laptop story.”
Facebook and other platforms demoted or killed a 2020 New York Post story about data found in a laptop that Hunter Biden had left to be repaired. Zuckerberg said the FBI had warned Meta of a Russian disinformation operation about the Biden family.

Update: The House of Representatives overwhelmingly rejected Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s effort to oust Speaker Mike Johnson, a move that would have sent the chamber into another round of chaos.
Greene’s motion to oust Johnson was tabled 359-43, with seven members voting present. Eleven Republicans and 32 Democrats voted against sidelining the motion.
The vote was a resounding defeat for Greene, who had insisted that she had substantial support for her effort.
CNN and MSNBC did extensive coverage of the vote, but Fox News largely stuck with The Five, doing a more complete update on Special Report at 6 p.m. Et.
That’s quite a contrast to October, when the House rejected efforts to table a resolution to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He then was removed as speaker, with 208 Democrats joining with eight Republicans.
That led to a protracted effort to find a successor who could amass a majority to become the next speaker.

Updated, with additional details from the hearing: The three major news networks largely bypassed live coverage of the latest chapter in a House GOP-led inquiry of whether to impeach President Joe Biden.
That in and of itself was a sign of just how much the effort has been losing steam, even among Republican lawmakers.
The House Oversight hearing, titled “Influence Peddling: Examining Joe Biden’s Abuse of Public Office,” featured Tony Bobulinski a former associate of Hunter Biden. Also testifying, albeit remotely, was Jason Galanis, another associate, who is in an Alabama prison serving a sentence for securities fraud.
Also testifying, as a Democratic witness, was Lev Parnas, a former associate of Rudy Giuliani. Parnas said that Giuliani, in advance of the 2020 presidential election, trafficked in false claims that the Biden’s were involved in a Ukrainian corruption scheme, and that the Russians were behind the disinformation effort.

House Republican leader, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-New York), rescinded her endorsement from Craig Riedel, a House of GOP candidate, due to the criticisms he made against former President Donald Trump.
On January 4, Stefanik announced on X that she would no longer endorse Riedel.
“Earlier this week, I informed Craig Riedel (Ohio-9) that I will be withdrawing my endorsement,” she wrote. “I was very disappointed in his inappropriate comments regarding President Trump.”
“As we begin 2024, my focus is on ensuring we nominate the strongest candidates on the ballot who are committed to electing President Trump this November and expanding our House GOP Majority,” Stefanik declared.
Riedel is a GOP former state representative running for Congress.
He made it clear in an audio recording that he would not endorse Trump and noted that his habit of insulting others does not seem presidential.
The recording was posted by the right-wing activist Charlie Kirk on X.

Hunter Biden walked out of a House Oversight Committee hearing on Wednesday as Chairman James Comer called Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to speak on a resolution to hold the president’s son in contempt of Congress.
Biden made a surprise, in-person appearance at the hearing and offered to address the committee directly. Last month, Biden had flouted a subpoena from the Oversight Committee ordering him to appear before Congress for a closed-door interview. Biden countered that the committee had offered him the option to deliver his testimony in a public hearing,...

On December 5, House Speaker Mike Johnson delivered a speech at this year’s National Association of Christian Lawmakers gala.
During his speech, he thanked the event’s organizers for not inviting any reporters, though it has not been made clear if he knew that the event’s organizer would record and post a video of the gala on his Facebook page.
“I’ll tell you a secret since the media’s not here,” Johnson told them.
His secret was that he had many conversations with God in the lead-up to the speaker role with which he was anointed.
“The Lord impressed upon my heart a few weeks before this happened that something was going to occur,” he said. “And the Lord very specifically told me in my prayers to prepare but to wait. I had this sense that we were going to come to a Red Sea moment in our...

The House of Representatives has officially authorized an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, formalizing their years-long fishing expedition against the president in a floor vote on Wednesday.
Lawmakers voted 221-212 along party lines to approve the resolution authorizing the inquiry.
Before being ousted from the speakership by his own party, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) initiated a vote-less, officially unofficial impeachment inquiry into the president. His successor, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced his decision to move forward with a floor vote to legitimize the probe via an...

Hunter Biden took House Republicans to task on Wednesday, defying a subpoena for closed-door testimony and instead delivering a statement outside the Capitol decrying the party’s efforts to impeach his father, President Joe Biden.
In November, Republicans subpoenaed Hunter, ordering him to appear before members of Congress to answer questions in a closed-door setting. Biden rejected the demand despite threats to hold him in contempt of Congress, instead offering to testify before the committee in a public setting, where his statements would not be subject to cherry-picking and selective releases by the GOP.

Update: House Republicans said that they will begin contempt of Congress proceedings against Hunter Biden, after he refused to testify in closed doors before lawmakers.
Rep. James Comer (R-ky) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) also said that the House will vote on Wednesday whether to authorize an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden.
“Today’s obstruction by Hunter Biden reinforces the need for a formal vote,” they said.
Earlier, Hunter Biden appeared on Capitol Hill, where he told reporters that he was willing to testify publicly.
Comer and Jordan said, “President Biden and his family must be held accountable for their corruption and obstruction. And we will provide that to the American people.”
But the White House has been quick to note that the committee has yet to produce evidence that the president did anything wrong.

A documentary film centered on the Ohio State University (Osu) sexual abuse scandal is currently in production and aims to bring renewed attention to the alleged role of then-osu coach and current right-wing Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).
Produced by George Clooney and directed by Academy Award-winner Eva Orner, the untitled documentary will provide a comprehensive account of the decades-long abuse perpetrated by former Osu sports doctor Richard Strauss, as narrated by the victims, which include former All-American wrestlers and football players who have chosen to speak out for the first time.
Mike Schyck, one of the over 300 victims of Strauss’ abuse, recently told reporters that he was extensively interviewed by Orner and the production crew. Schyck expressed his hope that the documentary will have a profound impact on the current efforts to hold Osu accountable.
However, he noted that some cynically exploit the focus on Jordan’s involvement for political...

Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, agreed to testify in a public hearing before the House Oversight Committee. Republicans immediately shot him down.
According to a Tuesday letter addressed to committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), Biden agreed to testify before the committee on Dec. 13 — as long as the hearing was public. In the letter, Biden’s attorneys quoted Comer’s own demand, issued in November, that given Biden’s “willingness to address this investigation publicly up to this point, we would expect him to be willing to testify before Congress.

After Jordan (R-Ohio) referenced antisemitism on campuses, Swalwell (D-Calif.) brought up a tweet from the House Judiciary GOP’s X (formerly Twitter) account, which is controlled by Jordan. On Oct. 6 of last year,...

Voters have delivered yet another resounding blow to the Republican myth that Americans want less bodily autonomy and individual freedom is what the people actually want. Tuesday’s elections saw the passage of a pro-choice ballot measure in Ohio, the failure of GOP efforts to oust Kentucky’s Democratic Governor Andy Beshear, and an overall lackluster performance by Republicans that shows the party has some work to do before 2024.

Democratic Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries says that “informal conversations” are taking place that could lead to a “bipartisan governing coalition” to elect a House speaker. After ousting former Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his leadership role, Republicans in Congress have nominated Rep. Jim Jordan as his replacement, but it’s unclear if Jordan has the votes needed to secure the position.
“There are informal conversations that have been underway,” Jeffries told host Kristen Welker on Sunday’s Meet the Press when she asked him about the possibility of a bipartisan solution.

On Friday, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was nominated by the House GOP caucus to replace Kevin McCarthy as speaker of the House – third in line to the presidency. He was endorsed by former President Donald Trump.
But a cloud hangs over Jordan. He has been accused of failing to report abuse at Ohio State University, where he worked as an assistant wrestling coach from 1987 to 1995.
An upcoming documentary about abuse at Ohio State — directed by and starring George Clooney for HBO — may draw more attention to the scandal and prompt more questions about Jordan’s involvement.
Though Jordan has repeatedly denied knowing about the allegations against Dr. Richard Strauss, who allegedly abused at least 177 male students at the university between 1979 and 1996, former wrestlers have claimed that Jordan was present when players spoke about Strauss, who died by suicide in 2005.

Update, 1:51 p.m. Pt: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) won the GOP nomination to become the next House Speaker, but he still appeared to be a ways away from securing a majority.
Jordan got 124 votes in secret balloting this afternoon, to 81 for Rep. Austin Scott (R-Ga), according to Punchbowl News and other outlets. Scott got into the race at the last minute earlier today.
Jordan needs 217 votes to win the speakership, although that threshold may change if lawmakers are absent. Jordan requested another secret ballot to see if members would back him in a public vote on the floor of the House, but the vote was 152-55, still far short.
“He’ll get there,” former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted last week, told CNN’s Manu Raju as he exited the GOP conference meeting.
McCarthy said that Jordan has to “just sit down and talk” to the holdouts.

The GOP’s search for a new House Speaker has led to mayhem and infighting that has crippled the caucus for weeks now. Despite managing to approve a preliminary nomination of Louisiana Rep. Stephen Colbert has a good idea of what went on during the “therapy session” that took place between roughly 150 lawmakers earlier this week.
The closed-doors meeting took place Monday, two days before the planned vote. Multiple GOP lawmakers described the meeting as “mostly civil, yet cathartic,” according to Politico. However, the meeting ended with House Republicans no closer to agreeing on who should replace Kevin McCarty as Speaker of the House after his recent ousting.
Colbert seized on one member’s description of the meeting as a “therapy session.” “I would hate to be a therapist for the House Republicans,” the late night host said before pretending to be be a medical professional for the party. “‘Normally I don’t say this to a patient, but you are all responsible for your parents’ divorce. All of you. The way you were as a child is why they weren’t happy.

War has erupted between Israel and Hamas, another government shutdown battle looms in the not-so-distant future, and the House of Representatives remains paralyzed by Republican infighting over the speakership.

As congress continues to search for a replacement House Speaker, two frontrunners emerged last week, in the form of Rep. Jim Jordan and Rep. Steve Scalise. Both options were pretty bleak for John Oliver, especially considering the latter candidate has previously likened himself to the former leader of the Ku Klux Klan.
To kick off his second episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver immediately got into Kevin McCarthy’s ouster, first poking fun at Patrick McHenry, who is filling the role in the interim.
Oliver joked that he looks like “Patton Oswalt as a ventriloquist dummy” and, like most of the late night hosts did this week, had a laugh at how hard McHenry slammed the gavel to adjourn the House after McCarthy was booted. The late night host then turned his attention to Jordan and Scalise, pointing out that Scalise was once equated to “David Duke without the baggage.

Rep. Nancy Mace announced she plans to support Rep. Jim Jordan to replace ousted House speaker Kevin McCarthy, whom she voted to remove from office last week. When pressed about the allegations that Jordan ignored sexual assaults by a team doctor while he was a wrestling coach at Ohio State University, the Republican congresswoman claimed to not “know anything” about the issue, despite it being widely reported.
“I know you’ve been outspoken about defending victims of sexual assault,” Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan said to Mace on Sunday.
