David Lynch's 'Dune' Gets Otherworldly 4K Sandbox Edition
Denis Villeneuve
Long before Denis Villeneuve brought his version of Frank Herbert’s Dune to the big screen, iconic director David Lynch took fans to Arrakis with his take in 1984, with Kyle MacLachlanas PaulAtreides. While the movie has its own history of multiple cuts and Lynch disowning the film because of the studio’s interference, with time, it has developed a cult following. Now the movie is getting a 4K and Blu-ray Sandbox release.

The four-disc set comes in a fitting limited-edition packaging that features a tempered glass liquid sand panel, showcasing the rolling sands of Arrakis and spice melange, moving in front of the iconic poster artwork. It’s certainly a collectible that the movie and the director’s fans would love to have in their collection. The box contains four discs: the movie’s theatrical cuts can be found on both 4K Uhd and Blu-ray, another disc contains the TV version on Blu-ray,...

Timebomb | In 1991, Michael Biehn got his own Jason Bourne thriller
Image
The Terminator’s Michael Biehn took the lead in 1991’s Timebomb – a B-thriller that shows what a charismatic, intense actor he can be.

The very same year his cameo as Kyle Reese was trimmed out of Terminator 2: Judgment Day’s theatrical cut, Michael Biehn finally got a deserved leading role – albeit in one of the weirder films in his long career. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime, 1991’s Timebomb isn’t a lost classic, but it absolutely is a reminder of what a terrific actor Biehn was in his 1980s and 90s prime. In a more just Hollywood, he would have been an out-and-out movie star.

Biehn plays Eddy Kay, a quiet watch repairer who’s so nice that it almost seems a bit odd that he’s single. Instead, he lives in a crummy single-room apartment with nothing in it other than a distractingly comprehensive selection of jigsaw puzzles.

Kurt Russell's Twisted Crime Thriller Predicted Our Love For True Crime
Image
Why are we so fascinated by the true crime genre? It seems morbid curiosity is, to some degree, responsible for its soaring popularity, raising uneasy questions about the ethics of perceiving such subject matter as entertainment. On the flip side, there's the psychological complexity of it all, which also highlights how vulnerable we truly are. The fact that anyone can be exposed to such extreme criminality is a sobering realization, as well as something that's been leveraged by streamers such as Netflix to churn out all kinds of sensationalized projects.

Turning real-life trauma into semi-fictionalized stories will always be a slippery slope, but I guess there is some value in bringing awareness to toxic attitudes responsible for certain crimes. A good example of this measured approach is Netflix's "Adolescence," which uses real-life crime statistics to examine misogyny among a certain demographic within a fictional setting.

The roots of true crime...

Denis Villeneuve Pays Tribute to David Lynch, Reflects on 1984 'Dune' Adaptation
Image
Denis Villeneuve, the sci-fi visionary behind films like Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, and, of course, the modern adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune, has paid tribute to David Lynch, his filmmaking colleague and partner in the rocky territory of Dune adaptations.

Lynch, who passed away recently, is credited with the first-ever adaptation of the literary sci-fi classic from 1965. In 1984, the surrealist master brought Duneto the big screen with mixed results. Starring Sting, Kyle MacLachlan, Brad Dourif, Max von Sydow, and Virginia Madsen, among others, the film was a box-office flop. Lynch was famously not happy with the studio's interference and spent decades distancing himself from the film. A few alternate cuts emerged over the years, but none of them matched Lynch's vision enough to make him stand behind the film.

Jump forward 37 years and Villeneuve makes a science fiction epic that checks every item in the list of "things from...

Kyle MacLachlan Expresses His Sadness Over the Loss of David Lynch
Image
Kyle MacLachlan has many reasons to celebrate filmmaker David Lynch, and he did just that with an emotional reflection on the passing of the 78-year-old Hollywood icon. Having been, as he said himself, plucked from obscurity to star in Lynch’s “first and last big budget movie,” Dune, and soon after taking on a career defining role as Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks, MacLachlan celebrated an “enigmatic” and “intuitive” man who changed his life. He wrote:

“Forty-two years ago, for reasons beyond my comprehension, David Lynch plucked me out of obscurity to star in his first and last big budget movie. He clearly saw something in me that even I didn’t recognize. I owe my entire career, and life really, to his vision. What I saw in him was an enigmatic and intuitive man with a creative ocean bursting forth inside of him. He was in touch with...

This Kurt Russell Serial Killer Film Kickstarted the Genre
Image
A violent storm brews off the coast of Puerto Rico, and the entire state is hot and sticky in anticipation of its arrival. However, in Miami, another kind of violent storm rocks the city. The Mean Season is a 1985 thriller set against the backdrop of the Miami hurricane season, starring Kurt Russell, Mariel Hemingway, and Richard Jordan. The film is a gripping take on the serial killer horror sub-genre. And though The Mean Season predates the boom of serial killer films, which the release of The Silence of The Lambs inspired, it contains a lot of the same themes audiences would appreciate in later entries in the genre. But despite being a tense and horrifying thriller, audiences at the time didn't seem to show up, let alone care for it. The Mean Season would go on to make less than its budget at the box office and has stayed largely buried,...

David Lynch’s Recovered Dune Messiah Script Offers a Window Into the Never-Made Sequel
David Lynch
Too early to call this the discovery of 2024? If we never get another David Lynch movie, series, or short film shot on consumer-grade Dv, this is just about our closest proximity to a fresh vision—also one that’s 40 years old, but sometimes we can’t make the choice between what is future and what is past. In researching his recently published A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune—An Oral History, Max Evry gave himself the unenviable task of finding Lynch’s supposed script for Dune Messiah––“supposed” because its only traces are to be found decades-old interviews, often in promotion of a film that caused so much disturbance to its creator he still speaks of it like… well, like a David Lynch character speaks of the malevolent force that hangs over their every moment. Saying he “wrote half a script” in Lynch on Lynch could’ve meant...

The Fugitive Director Reflects On Impromptu Harrison Ford St. Patrick's Day Parade Chase
Image
The Fugitive had a hectic production with many elements devised on the fly, including the memorable Saint Patrick's Day parade chase scene. Director Andrew Davis reflects on the scene, recalling that there were cameras hidden throughout the crowd and that the City of Chicago didn't know they would be filming. The Fugitive underwent constant script changes during production and also features a number of improvised lines.

The Fugitive director Andrew Davis reflects on his experience filming Harrison Ford's improvised Saint Patrick's Day parade chase. Released in 1993, Davis' film stars Ford as Dr. Richard Kimble, a man falsely accused of murdering his wife who sets out on the run from a U.S. Marshal played by Tommy Lee Jones. The now-classic film, which had a bit of a hectic production, features a number of iconic set pieces, including a Chicago foot chase that sees Ford blending into the Chicago Saint...

Where Gettysburg Was Filmed & How Much Was The Real Gettysburg Battlefield
Image
The cast and crew of "Gettysburg" were fortunate enough to film on location at Gettysburg National Military Park, where the actual Battle of Gettysburg took place in 1863. Little Round Top and Devil's Den were two important locations within the park where pivotal scenes were filmed, accurately recreating significant events from the battle. While most of the movie was not shot at the national park, the production team found other nearby locations, such as the Yingling Farm and Cashtown Inn, to ensure authenticity and capture the essence of the historic battle.

Unlike many other historical war films, the cast and crew of Gettysburg got to film pivotal scenes on location at Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. But the entirety of the movie was not shot on the grounds of the national park. The 1993 epic film is a four-hour depiction of the infamous Civil War battle and tells the story of soldiers on both...

30-Year-Old Civil War Movie Ages Well With Near Perfect Historical Depiction Of Battle Scenes
Image
Gettysburg is considered one of the greatest battles of the Civil War, and its 1993 movie accurately depicts the famous Little Round Top scene. Both Union and Confederate armies faced ammunition shortages during the battle, as portrayed in the film. The Union's successful defense and counterattack on Little Round Top was achieved through a well-executed military maneuver, which the movie effectively illustrates.

The 30-year-old Civil War movie Gettysburg ages well with a near perfect historical depiction of battle scenes. Written and directed by Ronald F. Maxwell, the film tracks the major conflict between Northern and Southern troops in Pennsylvania during 1863. The cast of Gettysburg, portraying real military figures, included Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels, Martin Sheen, Maxwell Caulfield, C. Thomas Howell, Richard Jordan, and Sam Elliott.

In a recent video from Insider, historian Garry Adelman looked at scenes from Gettysburg and explained how they were accurate. He noted the Little Round Top set,...

What Happened to The Fugitive?
Image
When it comes to adapting a classic TV show to the big screen, it doesn’t get much better than Andrew Davis’ The Fugitive. Indeed, the third highest-grossing film of 1993 proved to be a monumental critical and commercial hit that earned more than $370 million globally and was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. In addition to Tommy Lee Jones winning an Oscar for his indelible supporting turn as U.S. Marshall Sam Gerard, the film still boasts some of the most impressive action set pieces and stunning practical FX on record. The movie succeeds on multiple levels as a riveting manhunt thriller, an engrossing murder mystery, a compelling redemption story, an FX-driven action-adventure, and of course, a faithful TV adaptation that both honors the spirit of the original and also pushes the narrative forward into daring, unpredictable territory. Yet, for as nearly perfect a film as The Fugitive remains to this day,...

Marcia Cross Still Hasn’t Seen the Last Episode of ‘Desperate Housewives,’ But She is Ready for Next Iconic Role
Image
After playing Kimberly Shaw in “Melrose Place” and Bree Van de Kamp in “Desperate Housewives,” Marcia Cross is ready for her next iconic role.

“I always assumed that after ‘Desperate Housewives’ there will be a third act. It has not happened yet. That’s the double-edged sword of being an ‘icon.’ Everybody thinks you are that character and by the time they forget about it, you are not on anybody’s list anymore,” she said at Series Mania in Lille, France.

“I am at this funny crossroad: I am this incredibly ripe human and yet Hollywood is not particularly interested. We are tackling LGBTQ+ issues, although there is still a long way to go, we are talking about people of color, but – and I hate to say it – we don’t love to see older women. We were 40-year-old women doing ‘Dh’ and that was a big deal. Now, I want to see 60-year-old women.

The 15 Best Movies About Divorce, Ranked
Image
One of the greatest powers that films have is the ability to generate empathy. Even if we have a hard time understanding the issues that other people are dealing with, a great movie can open us up to someone else's experience. While some people go to the movies simply for escapism, films can be a tool for healing and learning.

Divorce is a topic that cinema has flirted with since the golden age of Hollywood, and classic films bravely took on these topics. Comedies like "His Girl Friday" and "The Awful Truth" dealt with non-traditional relationships, in which the couple has to consider the vows they want to make to each other. Although the 1970s saw many serious dramas about the legal proceedings of divorce, such as "Scenes From A Marriage" and "An Unmarried Woman," there have also been more humorous interpretations like "Something's Gotta Give" and "It's Complicated."

Dune 4K
Image
Ignored, maligned and hammered out into an ‘Alan Smithee’ extended cut for TV, David Lynch’s outstanding Sci-fi epic arrives on 4K Ultra HD, finally achieving the visual opulence on home video that it had in 70mm prints at the end of 1984. The fractured, de-Lynched storyline can be argued over, but the amazing design and arresting characterizations never fail to impress — Lynch attracted a world-class cast of movie stars and used them well. Even if it’s described as a hundred fragmented scenes from a larger narrative, they’re superlative fragments. Lynch should have been authorized to make an alternate cut, his own completely personal ‘impressionist’ version of the Frank Herbert story.

The Old Guard Review: Netflix Action Movie Showcases Immortal Heroes
Image
The overwhelming feeling in the early scenes of The Old Guard, director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s intermittently thoughtful take on the venerable trope of the superhero team, is one of exhaustion: on the part of the characters at first, and then perhaps just a bit on the part of the viewer, who realizes that they are watching a story that’s been told many times before. But even though it suffers from pacing and originality issues, The Old Guard still tells its story well enough to leave a more thoughtful impression than other typically superficial summer fare.

Andy (Charlize Theron), the leader of a ragtag quartet of immortal warriors who have fought for, rescued, and defended humanity for untold centuries, is tired of the job and wants out. Her team — which also includes Booker, Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Joe’s longtime lover Nicky (Luca Marinelli) — are age-old mercenaries with a secret weapon: they can’t die.

Gangs of London Season 2: Where Could the Crime Drama go Next?
Joe Cole and Sope Dirisu in Gangs of London (2020)
Landing last week on Sky and Cinemax, Gangs Of London has been one of the most thrilling and explosive new shows around (check out our review) with a cliffhanger ending that leaves things open for more action.

While Gangs of London series 2 hasn’t been confirmed, there seems to be an appetite for it from show co-creator (along with Matt Flannery) Gareth Evans. Evans told The Metro:

‘There’s room for it. Without giving too much away, we definitely end the season on a note where people will be wanting more and asking what is happening next.

‘I’m treading carefully! It’s sort of a cliff-hanger but as most things it’s a story that takes on a lot of different aspects, there’s a lot of different characters in there, a lot of vested interests, there’s a lot of stray threats trailing in the wind ready to be picked up again.

Bruce Lee to Get Definitive Criterion Collection Blu-ray Box Set
Bruce Lee in Fist of Fury (1972)
Bruce Lee’s cinematic legacy may already be secure, but it’s about to be boosted by impressive Blu-ray releases, courtesy of The Criterion Collection, that will see his five legendary, genre-transformative Hong Kong action films in a way we’ve never before imagine, digitally restored in 4K resolution.

Gerard Butler's Has Fallen Series Could Get Three More Sequels
Richard Jordan Nov 11, 2019

The bombastic action franchise could be expanding and going global, with more films and international TV spin-offs planned.

The Has Fallen Cinematic Universe is expanding. Yep, the producers of the Gerard Butler-starring franchise have revealed some grand plans for the future, including up to three (!) more feature films and a host of international TV spin-offs…

Against all odds, the film series – which kicked off with Antoine Fuqua's White House-set thriller Olympus Has Fallen back in 2013 – has amassed something of a cult following, with action lovers responding to the unashamedly overblown adventures of Butler's beleaguered secret service agent Mike Banning.

He also said that they are considering loaning out the franchise rights to international production companies,...

How Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Restarted a Movie Franchise
Richard Jordan Nov 6, 2019

This Star Wars article contains spoilers.

Every saga has a beginning. Episode I of the Star Wars "Skywalker Saga" was faced with a unique challenge when it was released in cinemas in the summer of 1999. As the first part of a Prequel Trilogy charged with "setting up" one of the most successful and beloved movie series of all time, the sheer weight of fan expectation placed upon The Phantom Menace's shoulders was pretty much unprecedented.

Star Wars creator George Lucas had been toying with the idea of expanding his original trilogy into a wider cinematic saga right from the very beginning but, as the filmmaker admitted to Time magazine in 1983, he had been “burned out” by the release of the final chapter,...

Kenneth Branagh's Death On The Nile Starts Filming With An All-Star Cast
Richard Jordan Oct 3, 2019

Kenneth Branagh is back to direct and star in his second Agatha Christie adaptation, which features another A-list ensemble.

Kenneth Branagh's star-studded Agatha Christie adaptation Murder On The Orient Express was a surprise hit back in 2017, grossing over $350 million at the worldwide box office. A sequel was always going to be on the cards, and with Christie having written over 30 novels and numerous short stories about Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, there was plenty of source material to mine from.

As teased at the end of the first movie, Branagh and Co have settled on one of the more famous Poirot tales – 1937's Death On The Nile – to adapt next. And, after a few delays, the film has finally started production with, as you might expect, a bulging cast list chock full of A-listers.

Death On The Nile is set aboard a luxury steamer in 1930’s Egypt, as...

Birds of Prey Trailer: Harley Quinn Is Back in Action
Richard Jordan Oct 2, 2019

Margot Robbie's popular antihero takes center stage in the first trailer for Cathy Yan's female-led ensemble actioner Birds of Prey.

Margot Robbie's is back with some new friends in DC's next sort-of-superhero ensemble movie, Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. And, if the film's first trailer is anything to go by, she'll definitely be front and center for the titular team's inaugural big-screen adventure.

Directed by Dead Pigs' Cathy Yan, Birds of Prey (to use its abbreviated title) follows on from Suicide Squad, with Harley having "broken up" with Jared Leto's Joker.

In her attempts to make a fresh start in a Batman-less Gotham City, she crosses paths with a young girl named Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), who's being hunted by the villainous crime lord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), and joins forces with vigilantes Black Canary...

Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot Casts Scorpion and Shang Tsung
Richard Jordan Aug 28, 2019

The Mortal Kombat movie reboot has found its Scorpion and Shang Tsung!

The fatality-laden fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat is heading back to the big screen for a bruising, beat-em-up extravaganza. The games have been adapted twice before – Paul Ws Anderson's decent, Enter the Dragon-with-superpowers 1995 original and its universally derided follow-up, Annihilation. This new version, though, is scaling things up, with the upcoming shoot in south Australia said to be the biggest production in the region's history.

With the movie due to start filming later this year, the casting announcements are flying out fast. Variety is now reporting that Chin Han and Hiroyuki Sanada have been cast as classic Mk characters Shang Tsung and Scorpion, respectively.

Shang Tsung was the "final boss," if you like, of the original film (in which he was memorably played by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and is likely to play the same role here.

Jason Blum Hopes The Hunt Will Still Get a Release
Richard Jordan Aug 20, 2019

The producer of the satirical thriller, The Hunt, which was pulled in the wake of recent mass shootings, says there's a chance...

Earlier this month, film studio Universal cancelled its planned September release of new Blumhouse thriller The Hunt in the wake of the two latest mass shootings in the Us. But in a new interview, prolific producer and Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum has said he hopes the film will find its way into cinemas at some point.

The Hunt's release was dropped after the tragic events in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio in early August. The "satirical social thriller," which follows a group of 12 strangers who wake up in a sort-of human game reserve before being hunted by a group of "elites" had also attracted the ire of President Donald Trump and Fox News. All of the film's trailers and marketing materials were swiftly pulled,...

Rian Johnson Star Wars Trilogy Still On, Will "Step Beyond" Skywalker Saga
Richard Jordan Aug 16, 2019

Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy is still happening and he is excited about the creative freedom it will bring.

A couple of years ago, just before the release of the Rian Johnson-directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, news broke that the Episode VIII helmer would be developing his own spin-off trilogy. According to Lucasfilm, Johnson's new series would be set within the larger universe but "separate from the episodic Skywalker saga" and would "introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored."

Since then, following the release of Johnson's, erm, opinion-splitting The Last Jedi, things had gone quiet on the Johnson trilogy front. But the project is still alive and well according to the filmmaker, who's currently embarking on promotional duties for his upcoming murder mystery movie, Knives Out.

Speaking to Observer, Johnson said the "fun and challenging...

Idris Elba Says He's up for Playing Heimdall in Future Thor Movies
Richard Jordan Aug 14, 2019

Idris Elba suggests the door could still be open for him to return as Marvel's Asgardian Heimdall, despite the obvious stumbling block.

This article includes spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

Perhaps one of the biggest surprises about Marvel's Phase Four slate was the fact that Chris Hemsworth's Thor will be the first Avenger to get a fourth solo outing on the big screen.

But while Thor: Love And Thunder will feature the return of familiar faces Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and, we're assuming, our hero's rocky buddy Korg (played by director Taika Waititi), it likely won't be bringing back the majority of Thor's old guard – most of whom croaked during the events of Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War.

That includes Idris Elba's Heimdall, the Asgardian protector and commander of the Bifrost, who was last seen making a heroic sacrifice in the opening scene of Infinity War.

Avengers: Endgame - Kevin Feige Confirms Mid-Air Snap Victims are Ok
Richard Jordan Aug 13, 2019

When it comes to explaining away one of Avengers: Endgame's biggest logic-stretches, the Marvel chief says Smart Hulk ain't so stupid…

This article contains Avengers: Endgame spoilers.

With Avengers: Endgame – aka the official biggest film of all time – hitting living rooms this week, it seems that Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige is on a tireless one-man mission to repromote the movie. And by that we mean explain away every little potential plot-hole so that we can all get to sleep a little bit easier at night/enjoy the film for what it is – a great piece of blockbuster entertainment and an impressive culmination of 22 movies worth of shared-universe storytelling.

The latest revelation should come as some comfort to any fans worried for those unfortunate Snap victims who happened to be travelling aboard aeroplanes/helicopters/blimps/hot-air balloons at the time of their dusting (during the events of Infinity War's finale).

Basically,...

Quentin Tarantino Defends Portrayal of Bruce Lee in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Richard Jordan Aug 13, 2019

Quentin Tarantino has commented on the controversial depiction of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

This article contains spoilers for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

As is often the case for a Quentin Tarantino movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood arrived with a smattering of controversy. Although this time, it's perhaps not what you might have expected, given that the film covers Qt's take on events leading up to the Manson Family murders.

Nope, this time, the backlash has to do with his portrayal of big-screen martial arts legend, Bruce Lee. And Tarantino himself has responded to the criticism, saying that Lee was "kind of an arrogant guy."

Played by Mike Moh in the movie, it's Lee's portrayal as a self-aggrandising boaster that has frustrated many – including his daughter, Shannon Lee. It's especially surprising given that Tarantino's depictions of other real-life figures...

Joan Tewkesbury: Do It Louder and Bigger
Old Boyfriends. Courtesy of Rialto Pictures.Old Boyfriends, Joan Tewkesbury’s 1979 directorial debut, is ripe for rediscovery. Penned by Paul and Leonard Schrader, the film features a top-notch cast including Talia Shire as an inquisitive psychologist and John Belushi, Richard Jordan, and Keith Carradine as men from her past whom she seeks out in a journey of self-knowledge. The film is neither a broad comedy nor a melodrama, but rather an eccentric mélange. At the time of its release the film received mixed reviews, with many critics uncertain about its tonal digressions and the nuances of the Schrader brothers’ screenplay. Now decades removed from the auteurist boom of the New Hollywood era, Old Boyfriends feels fresh—pleasingly off-kilter and presented through the perspective of a female character who doesn’t fit into Hollywood cliché, the film seems more likely to be appreciated by a young audience primed to seek out...

Terminator: Dark Fate - Edward Furlong Returns as John Connor in R-Rated Movie
Richard Jordan Jul 18, 2019

The original John Connor will be returning to the big screen for the first time since 1991 in the upcoming Terminator sequel

San Diego Comic-Con is well-known for dropping surprises for upcoming blockbuster movies, and it seems this year will be no different. One of Sdcc 2019's first big panels, for this year's Terminator sequel Dark Fate, revealed that an unexpected familiar face will be returning to the franchise – none other than John Connor himself, Edward Furlong.

The announcement was made by producer and series creator James Cameron, speaking to the Hall H audience via video link from the set of the Avatar sequels in New Zealand.

The new film – the sixth in the long-running sci-fi series – is set to be a direct continuation of 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day, disregarding the poorly received previous sequels Rise of the Machines, Salvation, and Genisys. Set 27 years after the events...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – Sith Troopers Revealed
Richard Jordan Jul 11, 2019

A special exhibition of Stormtroopers past, present, and future has unveiled Episode XI's new spin on the iconic design…

We're still a few months away from the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the last in the third trilogy of Star Wars films overseen by director/producer J.J. Abrams. And while details are still thin on the ground – we've only had one measly teaser trailer so far – StarWars.com has teased the first look at one of the film's new creations: a crimson red version of the iconic Stormtrooper dubbed the "Sith Trooper."

There are no real details on how these troopers will fit into the story, but with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) now in charge as the First Order's Supreme Leader and on the hunt for what little remains of the Resistance, it looks like he'll be employing some nattily dressed dark side muscle.

Avengers: Endgame Re-Release with Extra Footage Coming
Richard Jordan Jun 19, 2019

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige reveals that the smash-hit superhero saga will be back on our screens in an extended format.

It's not even left a lot of theaters yet, such is the box-office might of Avengers: Endgame – but it looks like the Marvel mega-hit is already getting a theatrical re-release.

Speaking to ComicBook.com during promo duties on the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealed that Avengers: Endgame will be back in a slightly new format, with some extra footage added in. "We are doing that," Feige said. "I don't know if it's been announced. And I don't know how much... Yeah, we're doing it next weekend."

The news will likely spur on a flurry of speculation about what the new footage might be. The original cut of Endgame clocked in at an already massive 181 minutes, but it's yet to be...

X-Men: Dark Phoenix Box Office is Franchise Low
Richard Jordan Jun 10, 2019

X-Men: Dark Phoenix had a disappointing opening weekend at the box office, to put it mildly...

It hasn't been a great weekend for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. The final chapter of the mutant saga has flamed out, taking just $33 million in its first few days of release in the Us – the lowest ever domestic debut for an X-Men movie.

The film fared better internationally, though – it earned $107 million outside of the Us, making for a better-sounding $140 million worldwide total.

Still, there's no hiding from the fact that it's a massive disappointment for Fox and the filmmakers – that worse-than-predicted domestic figure is only half that of the previous film in the series, 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, which took $66 million in its opening weekend. It also meant that Dark Phoenix came in second place in the weekend charts, behind The Secret Life of Pets 2.

The film has also beaten 2013's The Wolverine...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - New Characters Revealed
Richard Jordan John Saavedra May 22, 2019

New images from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker reveal two new characters played by Keri Russell and Richard E. Grant.

Time flies, eh? It’s just under seven months until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the third and final part of the new Star Wars trilogy, blasts its way into cinemas, and so far all we’ve had to really whet our appetite has been the recent teaser trailer.

But now, thanks to Vanity Fair, we’ve got our first look at some of the new characters who are set to make their debut in Episode IX. The magazine’s latest issue features a huge behind-the-scenes preview of the new movie, and although it doesn’t actually divulge much in the way of plot or character details (presumably the cast and crew have taken a pretty watertight oath of secrecy), the accompanying photos...

The Marvel Movies Debrief: Captain Marvel Recap, Legacy, and McU Connections
Richard Jordan Apr 25, 2019

It's time to catch up with the last McU movie before the Endgame – a '90s-set origin tale in which Carol Danvers finally takes flight

This article comes from Den of Geek UK. It contains spoilers for Captain Marvel and the wider McU.

Here we are, then – the last McU movie before the Infinity Saga-capping behemoth, Avengers: Endgame. Given its unique placing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it might not be that much of a surprise that Captain Marvel powered its way to a $1 billion (and counting) box-office haul. It's still a huge achievement though (especially given some of the less-than-savoury online flak it had to contend with in the lead-up to its release) – alongside Black Panther, it's only the second McU movie that isn't a sequel or team-up to reach that milestone.

Captain Marvel is more than just the starter to Endgame's main course, though. Obviously,...

The Marvel Movies Debrief - Thor: Ragnarok Recap, Legacy, and McU Connections
Richard Jordan Apr 18, 2019

The Thor franchise gets a new lease of life thanks to Taika Waititi, who gives the God of Thunder his best McU showcase yet

This article contains spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok and the wider McU.

"Life is about growth; it's about change..."

With Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in full swing, having already introduced a couple of major new characters and raised the stakes for the Earth-bound Avengers (in Captain America: Civil War), it was time for the Mighty Thor's third big-screen outing. It's fair to say, though, that the God of Thunder was in need of a bit of a rethink after his largely soulless second adventure, The Dark World. As Chris Hemsworth's Asgardian hero tells his up-to-his-old-tricks brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), sometimes a change can do you good...

The man tasked by Marvel with leading that change was Taika Waititi. And change things he did.

The Marvel Movies Debrief: Ant-Man Recap, Legacy, and McU Connections
Richard Jordan Apr 5, 2019

The Marvel Cinematic Universe scales down and introduces a likeable new hero to round off Phase Two...

This article comes from Den of Geek UK.

This article contains spoilers for Ant-Man and the wider McU.

While the Avengers were busy "dropping cities out of the sky," a new hero was waiting in the wings for his moment in the spotlight. Coming hot on the heels of Age Of Ultron, the McU's 12th chapter saw the flourishing shared universe going – to some extent – back to basics.

Rather than trying to compete with the overstuffed ensemble spectacle of its predecessor, Ant-Man offered a (mostly) standalone palette-cleanser to finish off Phase Two – and finally gave one of Marvel's key comic heroes his big-screen debut.

Of course, whenever Ant-Man is discussed, there's always the Edgar Wright-shaped elephant in the room. It's common knowledge that the fan-favorite Shaun Of The...

Tony Stark plays Frankenstein in the Avengers' second team-up, an ambitious sequel that misses some of the first movie's magic

This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron and the wider McU.

After the commercial and critical success of The Avengers, it seemed Joss Whedon could do no wrong. The writer-director was quickly snapped up by Marvel to serve as a creative consultant on their entire Phase Two slate, as well as being put in charge of the follow-up to one of the biggest films of all time. And when Avengers: Age of Ultron was announced at 2013’s San Diego Comic-Con, the room went nuts at the thought of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes taking on one of their iconic comic book nemeses.

When it finally hit screens in 2015, though, Age of Ultron didn’t quite get the rapturous reception that had greeted the first movie. It...

Avengers: Endgame New Footage Reveals Thanos
Richard Jordan Apr 2, 2019

A "special look" at Avengers: Endgame reveals new footage to celebrate tickets going on sale.

We're less than a month away from the release of Avengers: Endgame – one of the year's most-anticipated movies that will finally tie up the massive cliffhanger left at the end of Infinity War (Ok, so it's only been a year, but it's felt like way longer).

We've had a steady but mercifully spoiler-free drip-feed of trailers and clips over the past couple of months, many of which have capitalized on recycling older footage so as not to give much plot info away. But now, thanks to a 'special look' unveiled by Marvel to celebrate tickets going on sale, we've got an exciting glimpse at a bunch of brand-new footage.

Ok, so the video is only a minute long, but there's loads of new stuff to pore over, including Tony and Pepper's reunion,...
