How Chuck Norris’ Career Was Almost Ruined by the '80s 'Silent Rage' Controversy
Image
"Chuck Norris and Superman got into a fight, and the loser had to wear their underwear on the outside of their pants." Hundreds of such jokes are littered all over the internet, proving that even though he might be the most one-dimensional action star who ever lived (Steven Seagal would disagree), fans adore him. Chuck Norris is known as the guy you don’t mess with, and that’s because most of his movies remind us of this fact. He was like the Jason Statham of the ‘80s and ‘90s, playing the same kind of character every time yet never failing to leave audiences awed.

10 Strange Sci-Fi Movies That Action Stars Were In
Image
Sci-fi movies often contain their fair share of action, so its no surprise that plenty of action movie heroes have appeared in some fantastically strange science-fiction films. The nature of sci-fi stories means they embrace unbelievable concepts and tap into innate human fears around technology and progress. While this can lead to some undeniable movie classics, it also means that major box office stars sometimes end up participating in movies that were just downright strange and destined to become beloved cult classics or, in other instances, reviled box office bombs.

Many of the best sci-fi movies of all time have leaned into the bizarre and unusual sides of the genre, as technological tales of transcendent terror have captivated audiences and pushed narrative boundaries. While some strange sci-fi movies with acclaimed action stars have struck a chord with viewers, others were doomed to fester in obscurity. While they may not all...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Silent Rage (1982)
What more can be said about Chuck Norris? The ubiquitous ’80s B star, he made a series of mostly bland actioners that would only come alive if the director brought a little something different to the table, because they certainly weren’t going to work with an actor who has the charisma of a constipated two-by-four. This brings us to Silent Rage (1982), a hybrid sci-fi/horror/kung fu effort that is quite effective when it pushes away from The Hairy One’s usual antics. You want to see Michael Myers karate chopped by Lone Wolf McQuade? Step right up.

Okay he’s not Michael Myers, but he may as well be; Pov shots and the unstoppable killer’s relentless gait definitely harken back to Halloween and even the previous year’s Halloween II in a bid for some of that sweet slasher bread. It worked well enough at the box office,...

The Wanderers (1979) Screens This Weekend at Webster University
“I don’t blame you. When I was your age, I was knockin’ ’em off left and right; but I never did it with nobody’s daughter.”

The Wanderers (1979) screens Friday December 16th through Sunday December 18th at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood). The movie starts at 7:30 all three evenings.

The Bronx, 1963. The 50’s style greaser gang the Wanderers find themselves becoming obsolete as the world changes all around them. The beginning of the Vietnam war and the assassination of President Kennedy signify the end of innocence while these lovably macho and rugged Italian-American lugs deal with gang fights, racial conflicts, finishing high school, and the awkward, yet inevitable transition from adolescence to adulthood. With the 1979 film The Wanderers, based on Richard Price’s cult novel, Director/co-writer Philip Kaufman delivered a vivid, funny, moving and sometimes even surreal evocation of a magical period in time. He...

Penelope Cruz Signs On To Star In Drama Film Layover
Penelope Cruz is set to have some sort of a mid-life crisis in the new drama film Layover, a planned big screen adaptation of the novel of the same name by Lisa Zeidner. Toni Kalem – veteran actress on The Sopranos – has written the film and is also on board to direct.

The story revolves around a traveling saleswoman named Claire Newbold who, after the death of her only child and discovery that her husband is cheating, decides she’s had it with her mundane life. Soon she begins to live as a sort of con artist, sneaking into hotel rooms and seducing younger men while she’s at it. Eventually Claire begins to think she can even “read” into the souls of others the more she becomes in tune with herself.

One of the film’s producers, Tatiana Kelly, is particularly excited about the female talent not only in front of the screen,...

Welcome to the eighth installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the eighth episode, “The Legend of Tennessee Moltisanti," coming up just as soon as I devote my energies to the dignity of Connie Francis... "Where's my arc?" -Christopher And here we come to the meta — before it was even 100% meta. "The Sopranos" quickly became a hit for HBO...
