'We Tried to Get Him': Breaking Bad Writer Reveals Oscar-Nominated Filmmaker Wanted for Guest Role

Several notable names have been brought in for special guest roles in Breaking Bad and its prequel series, Better Call Saul. Not every desired cameo worked out, however, as revealed by one of the writers of both shows, Thomas Schnauz.

German filmmaker Werner Herzog is known for his work on dozens of movies and documentaries over the past several decades. Alongside Henry Kaiser, the acclaimed director was nominated for an Oscar for his documentary Encounters at the End of the World. In addition to his revered work behind the camera, Herzog has also acted sporadically, appearing in films like What Dreams May Come and Jack Reacher. In response to a recent interview with Herzog for CBS Sunday Morning, Schnauz said of the Grizzly Man filmmaker in an X post, "We hoped he would play the head of Madrigal (Schuler) in Breaking Bad, but we couldn't get him."

If you’re smart like Fredo Corleone – or, at least think you are – you should leap on the sale of the Lake Tahoe house that was featured in The Godfather Part II communion celebration, the classic “I’m smart” scene, and – spoiler alert – Fredo’s untimely demise.

The Fleur du Lac estate (Flower of the Lake) was a key part of the 1974 Francis Ford Coppola Oscar-winning movie. It has since been partitioned into 22 individual homes that collectively are referred to as Fleur Du Lac Estates. One of them is on sale for $3.75 million.

"Star Wars" creator George Lucas, TV icon Carol Burnett and NFL broadcasting legend John Madden will be among this year's inductees to the California Hall of Fame.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and first lady Maria Shriver unveiled the class of 2009 inductees Tuesday, saying they "embody California's innovative spirit and have made their mark on history."

Other inductees include Harvey Milk, the slain San Francisco politician and gay rights activist whose story was told in the Oscar-nominated biopic "Milk," and test pilot Chuck Yeager, who was portrayed in the 1983 film "The Right Stuff."

Also named to the California Hall on Tuesday were author Danielle Steel, Olympic decathlon champion and philanthropist Rafer Johnson, former Intel chief executive Andrew Grove, former Gov. Hiram Johnson, industrialist Henry Kaiser, philanthropist and peace activist Joan Kroc, bodybuilder and Schwarzenegger mentor Joe Weider and artist Fritz Scholder.

The nominees will be inducted in a Dec. 1 ceremony at the California Museum in Sacramento.
