Goebbels and the Führer review – private life of propagandist shows grotesque heart of Nazism
Joachim Lang
Joachim Lang’s bleak film shows a preening Goebbels and a careworn Hitler as they battle to convince the German public, and themselves, they will win the war

In an appropriate spirit of cynicism and bleakness, German director Joachim Lang has made a film about the private life of Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, the Hexenmeister or chief sorcerer of lies, and his always strained relationship with Hitler. Robert Stadlober plays the preening and self-pitying Goebbels and Fritz Karl is a careworn Hitler. Franziska Weisz plays Goebbels’s wife Magda, who at first resented his infidelities with showbusiness starlets but for the sake of the Fatherland submitted to the public image of a good Nazi wife and mother of six adorable children – whom Joseph and Magda finally murdered in the bunker before killing themselves.

In its subversive, austerely satirical way, the film feels almost like a B-side to Oliver Hirschbiegel’s...

Tilda Swinton, David Lowery team for an ‘anarchic whodunnit’
Image
Death In Her Hands will bring together Tilda Swinton and director David Lowery for a new whodunnit. More on the project here.

Tilda Swinton is a unique actor known for seeking out projects that challenge the artistic potential of cinema. (She also did Doctor Strange.)

Similarly, with films such as A Ghost Story and The Green Knight on his filmography, David Lowery often adopts the same approach as a director.

It’s intriguing then to see that See-Saw Films is backing Lowery’s next project, an ‘anarchic whodunnit’ called Death In Her Hands which will star Swinton in an adaptation of the cult novel by Ottessa Moshfegh.

Screen Daily broke the news, with Lowery describing the project as a ‘devious challenge’ to tackle. The filmmaker is currently in post-production on on the Anne Hathaway-starring Mother Mary, a movie that we’re hoping to see in 2025. Lowery has a particular...

See-Saw Films readies ‘Death in Her Hands’, starring Tilda Swinton
David Lowery at an event for Pete's Dragon (2016)
See-Saw Films will produce “anarchic whodunnit” Death In Her Hands, directed by The Green Knight‘s David Lowery and starring Tilda Swinton. The feature film is based on the cult novel by Ottessa Moshfegh, and will see Swinton play Vesta Gul, a widow who comes across a chilling handwritten note when walking in the woods near her home. It reads: “Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn’t me. Here is her dead body.” Except there...

Tilda Swinton at an event for I Am Love (2009)
Tilda Swinton is set to star in the psychological whodunnit Death in Her Hands
Tilda Swinton at an event for I Am Love (2009)
Tilda Swinton can recently be seen in Pedro Almodovar’s The Room Next Door with Julianne Moore. Our Alex Maidy found the film to be only adequate with his review stating, “The Room Next Door is as intriguing as all of Pedro Almodovar‘s films, but the move from Spanish to English betrays some of the gaps in the legendary filmmaker’s writing talents. Moore and Swinton are good, with the latter continuing to show her talents as a performer through physical presence, even more so than through speaking. This is not a film for everyone, but it shows that dying does not always have to be dark and that filmmakers like Almodovar can even find positivity and hope in sadness.”

Swinton implied that she’s ready for a break in her career, but that break won’t be coming too soon since The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that she...

David Lowery to Direct Tilda Swinton in Psychological Thriller ‘Death in Her Hands’
Image
David Lowery is set to write and direct Death in Her Hands, based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s 2020 novel of the same name, Deadline reports.

Tilda Swinton will star in the “anarchic whodunnit and otherworldly psychological thriller.”

She’ll play recent widow Vesta Gul, who comes across a chilling handwritten note in the woods near her home: “Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn’t me. Here is her dead body.” Except there is no body. No blood.

Unmoored by the death of her husband and armed only with a camera, her dog Charlie, and her vivid imagination, Vesta becomes obsessed with uncovering Magda’s identity and fate. As her inner world begins to eclipse reality, the mystery of Magda threatens Vesta’s grip on her own life – until, in a spellbinding operatic climax, we realize that Magda’s death may finally allow Vesta to live.

Leos Carax, Albert Serra, David Lowery, Alexander Payne & More Plan Next Features
Image
Kicking things off with a small but enticing update, following last year’s incredible cine-memoir It’s Not Me, Leos Carax is finally prepping a 2026 shoot for his first narrative feature since Annette. While not much is known about the project, a casting call confirms Léa Seydoux and Adam Driver will star in the Paris-set feature. Speaking of Driver: he’s also set to soon shoot James Gray’s Paper Tigers, in which Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller stepped in for Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong, respectively.

Last year, when we spoke to Albert Serra about his planned collaboration with Kristen Stewart for Out of This World, he seemed hesitant if the casting may come together and, indeed, it proved too good to be true. Variety now reports Riley Keough will lead the film alongside F. Murray Abraham and Liza Yankovskaia. The film follows “an American delegation traveling to...

Image
David Lowery has a new film in the works with Tilda Swinton set to star.

“Death in Her Hands” — described as an “anarchic whodunnit” and “an otherworldly psychological thriller” — is adapted by Lowery from the cult novel by Ottessa Moshfegh (“My Year of Rest and Relaxation”).

See-Saw Films, the Oscar-winning powerhouse behind “The Power of the Dog,” “The King’s Speech” and “One Life”, is on board to produce.

in “Death in Her Hands,” while walking in the woods near her new home, recent widow Vesta Gul (Swinton) comes across a chilling handwritten note: “Her name was Magda. Tilda Swinton to Breathe Life Into See-Saw’s ‘Death in Her Hands’ for Filmmaker David Lowery
Image
At the Berlin Film Festival in February, Tilda Swinton said she was looking forward to a long break from acting during which she would open a new chapter in her life in career beyond the big screen. But she’s not quite ready to bow out just yet.

Swinton is set to star in an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s cult novel Death in Her Hands for David Lowery. The auteur will write and direct the film for See-Saw Films and a team of producers that includes Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Jeanie Igoe with executive producers Simon Gillis and Ann Phillips.

Published by Penguin Press on June 23, 2020, Death in Her Hands is described per today’s release as “an anarchic whodunnit, an otherworldly psychological thriller and a striking portrait of a woman striving to take control of her own story.” Swinton will portray Vesta Gul, a recently widowed woman...

Best known for her work as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, Behati Prinsloo—who stands tall at 5 feet 10½ inches (179.1 cm)—has confidently strutted in sky-high heels across ten Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows, opening the runway in both 2014 and 2015.

Despite her statuesque frame, she’s never shied away from stilettos, once revealing, “I’ve never been the kind of girl who wears heels in the day – it makes me feel uncomfortable and I’m way too tall… but if I have an event, then I’ll wear a pair.”

Joey Coan Accused Of Binge-Drinking At Relative’s Wedding
Image
Joey Coan and Magda Szlachta, who fans sometimes call “Magna,” appeared in 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days, and TLC fans didn’t take to Joey. This weekend, he was accused of seeking a lot of attention when he attended a relative’s wedding. Read on for more details.

The Wedding

On Reddit on Sunday, a fan of the show claimed that they discovered by accident that they are related to Joey. Well, in a cousinly way. Notably, there were no photos or videos to back up the claims about the way he behaved. So, for now, you should take it with a pinch of salt.

Magda Szlachta – TLC YouTube

It is interesting, though, to see that hardly any fans of the TLC show doubted his alleged behavior that involved a lot of drinking. In the main caption, the Op said:

Little Trouble Girls Review: Sound and Silence in Youth
Image
Urška Djukić’s debut feature, Little Trouble Girls, emerges as a quietly daring exploration of adolescence. Its title—lifted from a 1995 Sonic Youth song that underscores the closing credits—hints at the tension between compliance and concealed impulses. The narrative centers on Lucia, a reserved sixteen‑year‑old who joins her Catholic school’s all‑girls choir, only to find that the ritual of song unlocks unspoken desires and unsettles inherited beliefs.

When the choir embarks on an intensive weekend retreat at a countryside convent, Lucia’s tentative world expands. She’s drawn into the orbit of Ana‑Maria, a poised senior whose playful provocations—applying forbidden lipstick, teasing secrets of womanhood—open doors to both camaraderie and subtle rivalry. As dusty hymns give way to whispered gossip beneath ancient stone walls, Lucia confronts her own curiosity: a stolen glance at a passing workman, a private fantasy in the moonlit woods.

SNL’s Trump Sells ‘Magda’: Make America Great Depression Again
Image
Saturday Night Live kicked off with Donald Trump trying hard to calm nerves about the falling stock market, only to come up with a slogan that did anything but: “Make America Great Depression Again.”

Markets tumbled before and after the president’s so-called “Liberation Day” tariff announcement this week, which saw massive percentages applied to several countries. Some islands with more penguins than people were even targeted, oddly. Trump has also shared a video about how he’s “purposely crashing the stock market,” leaving Republicans struggling to justify the tariffs.
