Netflix has unveiled the first haunting images from ‘Frankenstein,’ Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s long-gestating passion project and a bold new take on Mary Shelley’s iconic novel.
Set to launch globally on the streaming platform in November 2025, the gothic reimagining promises a chilling, character-driven vision of the timeless tale of ambition, creation, and consequence.

Del Toro—whose darkly fantastical touch won him Oscars for ‘The Shape of Water’—directs from his own adaptation of Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, breathing new life into the tragic story of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but arrogant scientist who dares to defy nature by creating a living being from the dead.

Guillermo del Toro’s long‑nurtured vision of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein will premiere in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in late August and stream worldwide on Netflix in November 2025, according to studio representatives who released the first production stills.
The images show Jacob Elordi towering in ragged bandages as a creature whose cracked‑marble skin evokes antique sculpture, a deliberate shift from the stitched brute of earlier films. Del Toro has framed the monster as “deeply human,” an approach already stirring debate among horror purists while drawing praise from admirers of his empathetic genre style.
Elordi accepted the part only weeks before cameras rolled after Andrew Garfield exited amid post‑strike scheduling conflicts, and the director now calls the six‑foot‑five actor “the most perfect choice for the creature.” Oscar Isaac embodies Victor Frankenstein inside a 360‑degree water‑tower laboratory constructed on a Toronto soundstage,...

With Frankenstein, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (Pinocchio, Cabinet of Curiosities, The Shape of Water) adapts Mary Shelley's classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
The project is a lifelong dream finally fulfilled for the Hellboy filmmaker, and Vanity Fair (via FearHQ.com) has finally revealed a first look at Jacob Elordi as the titular scientist's horrifying monster.
Talking to the site, del Toro said, "These are the parallels between Pinocchio and Frankenstein. It’s the idea of a person going from a baby to a human being in a short span of time and being exposed to everything—cold, warmth, violence, love, loss. And then going to his creator to say, 'Why? Why did you put me here? Why didn’t you give me the answers?...

It's alive! It's aliiive! Netflix has unveiled a creepy first look at former rom-com star Jacob Elordi's terrifying transformation into Frankenstein's monster for Guillermo del Toro's upcoming adaptation of Mary Shelley's 1818 gothic novel. Oscar Isaac stars in the film as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and it looks like he has been hard at work in his laboratory, piecing together the body of a reanimated creature. The monstrous figure is played by The Kissing Booth actor, though he is barely recognizable in this new sneak peek (featured below).
A recent trailer for Frankensteinoffered a brief glimpse of the statuesque and powerful monster, but Elordi cuts a strikingly sinister silhouette in the latest image, which arrives courtesy of Vanity Fair. As the outlet notes, "When fully exposed, the creature resembles a marble statue from antiquity that has been shattered and fused back together." Only part of the kintsugi-like monster's...

Del Toro has talked about wanting to make his own version of Frankenstein for years. He’s now 60 and knows time isn’t unlimited. “I’ve been doing movies for 30 years. I’m not going to be alive for 30 years, I don’t think,” he told Vanity Fair.
He said this film is his “bucket list” project, something he refused to give up on even though studios kept turning him down. “Everybody said no,” he said, shaking his head.
Now the first look at the movie has been released, and Frankenstein and his monster are definitely real.

Guillermo del Toro built a monster in Toronto, so four soundstages on the city’s waterfront have been renamed for the horror meister ahead of his latest movie, Frankenstein, lurching onto Netflix in November.
Cinespace Studios at its Marine Terminal Campus designated the four production spaces as “The Guillermo del Toro Stages.” And on Thursday, del Toro was handed the ceremonial keys to city of Toronto after the Oscar-winning director shot a host of movies at the Marine Terminal, including Nightmare Alley and Cabinet of Curiosities.
“The renaming of these stages is a testament to Guillermo’s impact and deep ties to the Toronto film industry and his commitment to storytelling,” Eoin Egan, co-ceo of Cinespace Studios, said in a statement.
For Frankenstein, the Marine Terminal, which has served as a production hub for Netflix, had a full-scale ship floating in the waters off Lake Ontario for the maestro of monsters’ movie shoot.

Netflix’s first teaser for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein logged more than two million YouTube views in its first 12 hours, setting off a wave of online demands that the gothic epic reach cinemas before its November streaming debut. The 75-second clip, unveiled during the Tudum fan showcase, offered only flashes of Oscar Isaac’s Victor, Mia Goth’s Elizabeth and Jacob Elordi’s still-obscured Creature, yet the stark black-and-white imagery drew instant praise for its “hammer-blow mood” and hand-crafted production design.
Within hours, Reddit’s r/movies filled with posts lamenting “Netflix-only” distribution, while a widely shared X post declared the film “too gorgeous for living-room screens.” Fan site FandomWire called the streaming-first plan “the biggest mistake” in the platform’s 2025 slate. Industry outlets note that del Toro and Netflix have signalled a compromise: a one-week theatrical window timed to awards qualification, mirroring the streamer’s rollout for Glass Onion...

Frankenstein is getting a makeover and no, not the Halloween costume kind. We’re talking full-on gothic glam, thanks to visionary director Guillermo del Toro. The guy behind Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water is bringing Mary Shelley’s iconic monster story back to life (pun absolutely intended), and it’s coming to Netflix. Expect moody vibes, haunting visuals, and a story that hits you right in the existential feels. This isn’t your grandma’s Frankenstein, this is del Toro’s Frankenstein, and that means we’re in for something dark, emotional, and completely unforgettable.
Moroever, Andrew Garfield, yes, that Andrew, the heartbreak king of Tick, Tick… Boom! and everyone’s favorite sensitive Spider-Man was originally lined up to star in the film. When word got out, the internet was buzzing. It felt like a perfect match. Del Toro’s brooding universe plus Garfield’s emotional depth? A dream.

All About Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein ( Photo Credit – Netflix )
Netflix is bringing Frankenstein back from the dead, and Guillermo del Toro’s long-gestating dream project is finally hitting screens in November 2025. And from the looks of the first teaser dropped during Netflix Tudum 2025, this isn’t your typical monster movie. It’s twisted. It’s tragic. And it’s absolutely del Toro.
Oscar Isaac stars as Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but ego-driven scientist. Jacob Elordi plays the creature. And the mood? Classic gothic horror with a romantic, decaying edge. Del Toro calls the film “the culmination of a journey that has occupied most of my life.” At Tudum (per Deadline), he added, “Monsters have become my personal belief system.” And Shelley’s novel? It’s the holy text.

After a 17-year journey to the screen, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein arrives this November, and we finally have our first look at some footage.
Netflix unveiled the first trailer for the fan-favorite filmmaker's adaptation of Mary Shelley's seminal novel during the streamer's annual Tudum event, and, as expected, it looks like this is going to be an extremely faithful retelling of the classic tale.
The teaser begins with Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein recounting his story to Captain Robert Walton, who encounters the scientist, now mad with grief and fuelled by vengeance, during an expedition to the North Pole. From there, we see shots of Frankenstein conducting the fateful experiment that gives life to his terrifying creation.
As for Jacob Elordi's Creature, there are only a couple of obscured glimpses, but we do get to see him lay waste to a mob while bellowing his "father's" name.

Netflix has unveiled a closer look at Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. This past Saturday, May 31st, at its Tudum 2025 Live Event, the streamer treated audiences to a first look at the anticipated trailer for the acclaimed filmmaker's latest monster movie. The trailer itself focuses primarily on Oscar Isaac's portrayal of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, offering a preview of the tortured mind of the seemingly mad scientist. We also catch a brief glimpse of Jacob Elordi's statuesque and powerful Monster.
While the trailer — which you can watch below — certainly alludes to elements that might typically be associated with horror, del Toro recently shared a surprising revelation about his approach to Frankenstein. During this year's Cannes Film Festival, he discussed the film with its Academy Award-winning composer, Alexandre Desplat (known for The Shape of Water), revealing that his rendition is not a horror feature.

At Netflix’s Tudum fan showcase on 31 May, Guillermo del Toro premiered the first teaser for his long-nurtured take on Frankenstein and confirmed a worldwide Netflix launch in November 2025. The film features Oscar Isaac as visionary medic Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the ill-fated creature, while Mia Goth is expected to portray a role reminiscent of the Bride. Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley and Charles Dance round out the ensemble.
Del Toro has courted the material for more than two decades, saying the story “fused with my soul,” and finally secured financing under his ongoing production pact with Netflix after his Oscar-winning Pinocchio. Principal photography lasted nine months in Toronto and wrapped late last year, according to crew notices and industry reports. Andrew Garfield had initially been eyed for the monster but withdrew amid strike-related scheduling snarls, clearing the way for Elordi.

In the annals of cinema history, there have been many movies inspired by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's 1818 Gothic masterwork Frankenstein. To name but a few, James Whale did it in 1931, and repeated the trick with The Bride Of Frankenstein in 1935; Mel Brooks turned the Promethean tale into the stuff of farcical gold with Young Frankenstein; and Robert De Niro channelled his inner creature to memorable effect in Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. But Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, heading to Netflix this November after a hard-fought 17 year journey to the screen, could well top them all — at least if the newly released trailer for the Mexican fabulist's latest movie is anything to go by. Check out Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Jacob Elordi getting their Gothic horror on in the teaser below;

Pairing Guillermo del Toro with Mary Shelley might be as delicious as peanut butter and jelly, as seen in this teaser trailer for the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s adaptation of Frankenstein. This first look at del Toro’s take on the classic story features Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, with Jacob Elordi set to play the doctor’s (exceptionally tall) monster. The movie is set to premiere on Netflix this November.
Del Toro has been developing his take on Frankenstein for over a decade, calling Shelley’s original text “my favorite novel in the world,” and few filmmakers have felt better suited to taking on one of cinema’s most famous monsters. That said, there have been a few other adaptations featuring the character — at least 190.

So far, we've only seen a couple of promo stills and a few seconds of footage from Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, but the fan-favorite filmmaker has now confirmed that the first trailer for his long-awaited take on the classic novel will be released online this Saturday during Netflix's annual Tudum event.
The Hellboy and Blade II director announced the news over on Bluesky with a brief promo, but we'll have to wait until Saturday to see something new from the film, as it's the same footage of Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein from the previous clip.
We expect Del Toro to stick pretty close to Mary Shelley's original tale, but those hoping to see the filmmaker return to his horror roots might be disappointed.
"Somebody asked me the other day, does it have really scary scenes?" Del Toro said during an interview at the Cannes Film Festival last week.

We expect Del Toro to stick pretty close to Mary Shelley's original tale, but those hoping to see the filmmaker return to his horror roots might be disappointed.

Guillermo del Toro has recently revealed that while he has taken up the momentous task of adapting Frankenstein, it will not be a horror one. Rather, the 60-year-old wants his version to be remembered as an emotional one.
Written in 1818, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus, became the peak of the Gothic horror. However, Shelley also incorporated the psychological elements in her magnum opus.
Now, as Frankenstein is set to debut on Netflix in the latter half of the year, director Guillermo del Toro shared his vision regarding his latest adaptation. De Toro shared that despite the genre, his film will not be a horror one; rather, it will be an “emotional film.”

In a few months, Guillermo del Toro’s gothic pic, Frankenstein, will land on streaming and promises to deliver an unusual perspective on the titular monstrous character. As Variety reports, the director himself has revealed that he is taking a more sympathetic approach to the undead creature at the heart of his film, which features an elite group of actors. Oscar Isaac stars as the scientist Victor Frankenstein, with Jacob Elordi portraying his monster. They are joined by Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Charles Dance, Ralph Ineson and Christoph Waltz.
During a conversation at the Cannes Film Festival with Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat, del Toro mentioned that his own version of Frankenstein is in no way a horror movie but an “emotional one” to him. He elaborated:

Jacob Elordi is stepping into some of the most iconic roles in Gothic literature, and he knows exactly how lucky he is. Fresh off filming Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, Elordi reflected on the experience in a recent interview with Collider's Christina Radish while promoting The Narrow Road to the Deep North — and he couldn’t have sounded more thrilled about the prospect of adapting two of the most famous stories in the history of literature.
“It’s the coolest thing, ever,” Elordi said. “I’m spoiled for the rest of my life in movies. What do you do? I had the best time on both films, and the language was so rich. The cinematic language of Guillermo and of Emerald was so incredibly unreal, and the sets were so deeply impressive. I can’t believe that I’ve been a part of...
