At five years old, after seeing Jaws (1975) at a drive-in theater, David moved to Martha's Vineyard with his family. Living on the island, he was never afraid of going into the water and he grew up being an avid fan of film. Appearing as a local high school band member in Jaws: The Revenge (1987). During high school.

After graduating he moved to the zombie capital, Pittsburgh, PA enrolling in the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Learning trade show designs, prop/model building and special make-up effects from industry legend Tom Savini. It wasn't too long before David started working on numerous films being shot in the area. The first, a PBS TV movie entitled Darrow (1991) starring Kevin Spacey. Where at first he was hired to assist in prop fabrication, then soon became Spacey's stand-in. He also appeared as an extra in Bob Roberts (1992), but it wasn't until The Cemetery Club (1993) and Money for Nothing (1993) where David worked as a full time Prop Assistant. He quickly was offered a job in Hollywood alongside Prop Master Eugene McCarthy.

Packing up all his belongings and with only $100 in his pocket, he drove across country where he was nearly killed in a car accident in April of '93. His car flipped three times and collided with a semi-truck just outside Miami, Oklahoma. He walked away without injury, but lost virtually all his belongings in the wreck. Borrowing money from a friend he flew to Los Angeles and three days later he started work on a Danielle Steel movie of the week.

David continued to work in the prop department and then started branching out as a writer, producer and director. As of 2017, D.W. Kann's company Darkside Media self publishes comic books and graphic novels. Recent titles include, 'Lovecraft P.I. A Shot In The Dark' and 'Berserkers: Solo Island'.
