Subhash K Jha, in a new installment of This Day That Year, revisits the Kunal Kohli directed rom-com Mujhse Dosti Karoge , which starred Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji as it clocks 23 years.
Besides Hrithik Roshan’s grin, Kareena Kapoor’s pout and Rani Mukherjee’s sighing transparency, the pivotal character in Kunal Kohli’s debut film is Erich Segal’s immortal paean to mushy romance Love Story that has been a benchmark for celluloid’s flirtatious frolic for over 35 years now. Mint-fresh copies of the novel (to go with Sharmistha Roy’s slick-and-span and predictably colourfulsets) peep out of every nook and cranny of this fluffy romantic triangle.
In the 1973 blockbuster, Bobby, which was partly inspired by Segal’s novel, the 15-year old Dimple had created a nationwide furore when she looked Rishi Kapoor straight in the eye and said, “Mujhse dosti karoge?” . All the three main characters...

Subhash K Jha looks back at Teree Sang, Satish Kaushik’s film on teen pregnancy that released in 2009, in a new installment of his popular feature series This Day That Year.
This is Raj Kapoor’s Bobby with furtive sex and a baby thrown in for good measure. Otherwise the boy-meets-girl formula never seemed more homage-bound. Soft to the touch, but underpinned by a strong message on sex and the single parent, Teree Sang is a sweet and likable spin on premature parenthood.
The prim ‘n’ propah Rajat Kapoor and Neena Gupta, playing the debutante Sheena Shahabadi’s stiff-upper-lipped parents, could well be the painfully-young Rishi Kapoor’s parents in Bobby-Pran and Sonia Sahni — with their social airs and graces borrowed from a tacky soap on Page 3 mores.
Sonia Sahni had dropped her pallu to show her disdain for motherhood. Neena Gupta doesn’t seem sure of what to drop.

Turning the focus on the brilliant 2018 release Mulk, Subhash K Jha presents a new installment of This Day That Year feature and director Anubhav Sinha speaks about the making of the drama.
Whose land is it anyway? At a time when the Indian Muslim finds himself isolated like never before, Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk serves as a jolting reminder of how far into the darkest recesses of distrust and animosity, terrorism has taken the blame game.
It is very hard to believe that Sinha whose earlier credits include fluff stuff like Tum Bin and Ra.One, has actually created this modern political masterpiece which attempts very successfully to humanize a community that has been demonized by some negative elements. And yet Anubhav Sinha’s doesn’t take sides, doesn’t make the Indian Muslim community a portrait of injured innocence.
What it does do—and full-marks to Anubhav Sinha for...

Songs celebrating friendship are so prevalent in our cinema that it becomes difficult to say which came first: dosti or dosti ke gaane. Subhash K Jha lists his selections for the best dosti ke gaane.
In recent times, the only really rousing friendship song was heard in the Kartik Aaryan starrer Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. The song ‘Tera yaar hoon main, Tu jo rootha toh kaun hansega,Tu jo chhoota toh kaun rahega, Tu chup hai toh yeh darr lagta hai, Apna mujhko ko ab kaun kahega, Tu hi wajah…Tere bina bewajah bekar hoon main, Tera yaar hoon main’ written by Kumaar and composed by Rochak Kohli is sung by Arijit Singh with exceptional feeling. Arijit counts this among his personal favourite songs. Kartik Aaryan’s sincere and heartfelt emotive acumen added substantially to the song’s impact.

Bollywood glittering award nights have always fascinated fans. But a shocking confession from within the industry’s most celebrated families once exposed the murky truth behind the glamour. The late Rishi Kapoor, veteran actor and member of the Kapoor film dynasty, openly admitted in his autobiography that he once bought a Best Actor award—for just ₹30,000.
Rishi Kapoor’s Bold Admission
In his candid autobiography “Khullam Khulla”, Rishi Kapoor made several honest revelations about his life and career. Among the most startling was his confession that he had paid ₹30,000 to secure an award for his performance in the 1974 film Bobby. He wrote that during those days, he was young and insecure, and the idea of winning an award felt crucial to prove himself.
Rishi didn’t shy away from admitting his mistake, calling it a decision made out of immaturity and desperation for validation. However, he clarified that he never...

Bollywood and the underworld have often had shadowy overlaps, especially during the 1980s and 90s. One such unexpected story comes straight from the autobiography of legendary actor Rishi Kapoor, who candidly revealed his encounter with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
In his memoir, Rishi Kapoor mentioned that he met Dawood not once, but twice—first in 1988 and again in 1989, both times in Dubai. What began as a brief interaction turned into a four-hour-long meeting filled with conversation, tea, and revelations.
Dawood’s Favorite Bollywood Stars
During their second meeting, Dawood Ibrahim opened up about his admiration for several iconic Bollywood actors. According to Rishi, Dawood had a deep appreciation for the Kapoor family, particularly Raj Kapoor. He also expressed fondness for classic actors like Dilip Kumar, Mehmood, and Mukri—legends who shaped Indian cinema during its golden age.

While the biopic on Kishore Kumar remains in limbo, what with the singer’s family not allowing any director access to the content on life of the singer, director Umesh Shukla, whose directorials include the controversial Oh My God and the Amitabh Bachchan-Rishi Kapoor comedy 102 Not Out, is working on a biopic on the legendary singer Mohammed Rafi.
Confirming this happy news, Umesh Shukla says, “Yes, I am working on a biopic on Mohammed Rafi Saab. That is a hundred percent true. However, I’ve not started casting for the lead. I’ve just completed the script and now I will look for the actor who is convincing as the great Rafi Saab.”
Umesh also reveals that he will be using the original songs of Rafi in the bio-pic.

Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, the daughter of Bollywood icons Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, is absolutely beaming with joy as her daughter Samara embarks on her journey into Class 10—a milestone that fills most parents with a blend of pride and nostalgia. Known for her poise and elegance, Riddhima decided to mark this special occasion in the most heartfelt way: with a selfie that radiates warmth, love, and the undeniable bond between mother and daughter.
On her social media, Riddhima shared a candid mirror selfie alongside Samara. Both dressed casually yet glowing with happiness, they flashed big smiles that could light up any room. The caption simply read, “Congratulations, my doll! Year 10,” a phrase that beautifully captures Riddhima’s emotions without needing any frills. Nikhil Advani’s sixth feature film D-Day was an accomplished work. It was a thriller about the enforced extradition of a Dawood-like gangster. But what we came away with was a haunting love story between a mysterious Indian intelligence agent and a Pakistani prostitute, both wounded and scarred for life. She in ways that we can see. He in intangible ways. But pain, at the end of the day, is pain. It’s what binds together the whore and the ex-army man.
Shot in an expertly constructed brothel sets with the crowded colours of lurid sex suggesting the tragedy of lives lived in borrowed beds, the scenes between Arjun Rampal and Shruti Hassan are punctured by piercing silences and a haunting melody about love loss and incomplete lives sung by Rekha Bharadwaj. The screenplay by Advani, Ritesh Shah and Suresh Nair constructs a collage of characters hell bent on a collision course.

Subhash K Jha revisits Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos, which featured Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.
It is heartbreaking to reject a film that has so much heart in it. Jagga Jasoos wore a huge Barfi hangover. It reminded you of the cinematic styles of several storytelling legends from Satyajit Ray to Tim Burton, but ultimately it failed to meet any of the master storytellers.
Finally, this was a world that only Anurag Basu inhabits and comprehends. I am not too sure if that’s a reason to rejoice. We can only partake of the goodies from the outside, like curious tourists peering into an exotic country from a cruising. The storytelling devices in Jagga Jasoos deliberately distance us from the bizarre goings on. The plot is a one-liner stretched vast acres of exposition and posturing.
A lot of the lengthy playing time is taken up by Ranbir’s Jagga...

Astrologer Vikkramm Chandirramani Shares An In-Depth Astrological Insight Into Ranbir Kapoor’s Career (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Ranbir Kapoor’s foray into cinema began early, with short films he created in his early twenties – a subtle yet telling expression of the creative legacy passed down from his iconic grandfather, Raj Kapoor, who himself directed his first feature at just 24. That inheritance is reflected not only in spirit but also in name: Ranbir was named after his grandfather, whose full name was Ranbir Raj Kapoor.
Long before he appeared on screen, Ranbir immersed himself in the process behind it. He assisted on Prem Granth (1995), helmed by his uncle Rajiv Kapoor, and Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), directed by his father, Rishi Kapoor. These early experiences were formative, grounding him in the workings of the industry. His most significant apprenticeship, however, came with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black (2005), a film he worked on closely behind the scenes.

Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight on Neetu Singh on reel and in real in a birthday special feature.
Baby Neetu grew up to be one of India’s most vivacious actresses. The transition from the adorable little gamine in Do Kaliyan to the exuberant heart stealer in Khel Khel Mein was almost seamless. Very few child stars have graduated to adult roles so effortlessly.
One day Baby Neetu was doing a desi version of Walt Disney’s The Parent Trap. The next day she was all grown up dressed up in leather skirts and boots to play Randhir Kapoor’s costar in Rickshawalla. That’s the story of Neetu’s life. She just went with flow. As a child she was taken from one magazine office to another by her ambitious mother desiring that her overgrown baby be cast in an adult role at the earliest.
Baby Neetu had impressive credentials.

Subhash K Jha revisits the murder mystery Humraaz, an Abbas-Mustan directed film starring Bobby Deol, Akshaye Khanna, and Amisha Patel that released in 2002.
How can we forget Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M For Murder about a husband who hires a charlatan to bump off his wife, when Andrew Davis recently remade the film as A Perfect Murder? Now Abbas-Mustan, the Indian purveyors of slick, intelligent thrillers, give a revivified interpretation to the classic murder thriller .
Humraaz is a gripping Hitch-cock-tale. While the Hollywood films were only about greed and other sleazy motivations Abbas-Mustan add a dash of traditional Indian values to the original when the wife, initially in collusion with her lover to betray her husband, begins to grow progressively conscious of her spousal duties. This is where the film begins to resemble Raghunath Jhalani’s 1978 marital drama Badalte Rishtey where Reena Roy married Jeetendra for his riches but soon...

Exclusive! Kussh S. Sinha Opens Up About Making Nikita Roy ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Kussh S. Sinha, who directs Nikita Roy (which releases on June 27), is the deviant in his family. While dad Shatrughan Sinha (also a singer and producer on occasion), mother Poonam (also a one-film producer), sister Sonakshi (who has also sung in a film), and twin brother Luv have all been actors, Kussh has always wanted to direct movies.
What was the reason for you changing channels, so to speak?
I think it is all instinctive. You know what is right for you—you just know it! I have seen how those who want to be actors notice how existing actors present themselves and interpret scenes, learning from them. But I would look at the totality, including the acting, when watching any movie. I would note every aspect, including the way the scenes and sequences were written and filmed and even the music.

Subhash K Jha in a This Day That Drivel feature revisits Jackky Bhagnani’s debut film Kal Kissne Dekha.
As a vehicle for Jackky Bhagnani’s aptitudes Kal Kissne Dekha, released on June 12, 2009 is a harmless, inoffensive sometimes-fun but never funny (in spite of concerted attempts at humour) vehicle. The writing skills displayed in young Bhagnani’s launch pad range from the intentionally funny to the abysmally tacky.
The eye-confectionary is innocuous as long as the simple boy with the innocent smile(with incredibly white over-decalcified teeth) and the campus female-brat fight it out through a primeval mating game interspersed with ‘cool’ songs and dances with enough colours to put a mammoth carnival to shame.
The serious stuff ends up being embarrassing in its clumsiness. Casting Rishi Kapoor as a college professor who moonlights as an explosive terrorist is a bomb of an idea. We know Kapoor is the last word is versatility.

The one where Mallika Sherawat spoke to Subhash K Jha about her Khwahish.
Govind Menon’s Khwahish, released on June 6 , 2003, was an oddity. It not only ripped off Arthur Hiller’s 1970 blockbuster Love Story, it also literally translated every dialogue of the original.
Although the dialogues, like most of everything else in this film, have been transcreated wholesale from Erich Segal’s epoch-making novel Love Story, the dialogue writer Shashi Wadia takes credit for the words that the Ryan O’Neal-Ali MacGraw clones are made to speak by director Govind Menon in his second feature film.
Of course, the peppy MacGraw called O’Neal ‘Preppie’ in Love Story. Her clone, Mallika Sherawat, calls Himanshu Mallik ‘Sethji’ instead.
Dial Bollywood for innovation.
Menon’s first film Danger was largely ripped off from another Hollywood source (Bound). Now Menon goes at Arthur Hiller’s 1969 adaptation of Erich Segal’s novel with enormous enthusiasm.

Shining the light on Kunal Kohli’s rom-com, Hum Tum starring Rani Mukherjee and Saif Ali Khan as it clocks 21 years!
Hum Tum is a boy-meets-girl tale with no unexpected twists and turns. Its greatest Usp is its disarming lack of guile. Kohli nurtures his two protagonists’ stormy relationship through several continents and a gigantic time zone that spawns more than a decade(though neither Saif nor Rani bring a change in their look or attitude, except maybe in Saif’s hairstyle).
The ‘epic’ design doesn’t weight down the basic levity of the romantic comedy.
And what we end up looking at isn’t so much a celebration of universal love as two clumsy people grappling with the grammar of the emotion called love , who don’t get the punctuations right. But director Kohli, whose earlier film Mujhse Dosti Karoge was clogged with incongruities, gets all the pauses and punctuations right.

Subhash K Jha revisits another excellent film, Fanaa, which starred Aamir Khan and Kajol in this special installment of This Day That Year. Director Kunal Kohli also shares his thoughts on the film, its longevity, and its popularity with fans today.
Send up a silent prayer for rediscovering that old lost pleasure of a powerful plot that Fanaa retrieves so affectionately for us. Also, send up a prayer for an actor like Kajol, who fills up the screen with feelings and thoughts that go way beyond the tears, fears, and jeers of a workaday movie. Writer Shibani Bathija’s powerful drama about the tumultuous romance and tragedy between a blind Kashmiri girl, Zooni (Kajol), and her guide, mentor, and tormentor, Rehaan (Aamir Khan), is suffused in the silken sounds of a heart-feeling the first stirrings of love and hurt.

Prakash Mehra Once Recalled How Amitabh Bachchan Was Scared With Zanjeer’s Initial Reaction! (Photo Credit –YouTube)
Amitabh Bachchan is currently the ‘Shehenshah’ of Indian Cinema but once upon a time, he was just a newcomer, trying to figure out a way to survive in the industry and waiting for that one film which would be appreciated and fare well at the box office. At the time when all of his films tanked at the box office, a man came to his rescue – Prakash Mehra!
The filmmaker changed Big B’s life by making him the Angry Young Man of Indian Cinema by offering him Zanjeer, a film written by Salim Javed and rejected by Dharmendra, Dev Anand, and others.
It was on Pran and Salim Javed’s insistence that Prakash Mehra cast Amitabh Bachchan after reviewing his work in Bombay To Goa. The rest, as they say, is history.

Starring Arjun Kapoor, Prithviraj, Jackie Shroff, and Rishi Kapoor, Aurangzeb, directed by Atul Sabharwal released in 2013. In this feature, Subhash K Jha revisits the crime thriller, and Rishi Kapoor speaks on being the villain – he was not happy with that label.
Sapna se badaa apna hota hai…It’s okay to sacrifice one’s dreams for the sake of those you love. This is a recurrent thought in this hard-hitting family drama about fatally flawed people who flock together in search of happiness that is snatched from them by a fate far more cruel and savage than what we generally see and recognize as destiny.
The destiny that seems to underline the lives in writer-director Atul Sabharwal’s drama of family feuds is as flawed as it is rich in resonances. And why not! Perfection is as boring as it is unbelievable. Sabharwal spreads out a hectic, hefty horizon of dark grey,...

In this Special Mother’s Day feature, we have a throwback to 2018, when Rishi Kapoor, as only he could, spoke with Subhash K Jha about his mother, Krishna Raj Kapoor.
Would you like to talk about your mother on Mother’s Day?
Of course, I’d love to talk about my mother. But why on Mother’s Day only? Every day should belong to the people you love the most. I refuse to slot my loved ones according to a day of the week….Mother’s Day, Father’s Day… can you believe it, they even celebrated a Grocery Day!! And if that isn’t enough, they also had an Asthma Day!! I refuse to discuss my mother as just a special person for a day.
Okay then just forget it’s Mother’s Day and just tell me about her?
I don’t mind talking about her any day of the year.

Box Office: With 650% Roi, Most Profitable Film ‘Maa’ Film Is Ruling Since 68 Years – Here’s Why No One Broke The Record Ever!(Photo Credit –Shemaroo)
It has been 68 years, and one woman is ruling the box office record for the highest-grossing Maa film of Hindi Cinema, with no other actress or film even coming close to the success of this Hindi Film. Mothers are special, of course, but when we tried finding some numbers for films on Mothers, they were a handful. In 1957, it was Nargis who arrived as the Mother of all mothers at the box office, singing ‘Duniya mein hum aaye hain to jeena hi padega,’ and Hindi Cinema was never the same again after Mother India!

Later on, Nargis was to confess she never thought the film would become synonymous with her career. She did other female-oriented films like Lajwanti and Raat Aur Din. But everywhere she went, she was hailed as Mother India.
Nargis Dutt was a very strong woman. She had the inner strength to walk out of a relationship with Raj Kapoor when she saw no future, no marriage, in it. Within months of the breakup, she met and fell...
