12 Actors Who Were So Perfectly Cast That They Can't Be Replaced
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Have you ever watched a film or television show where you saw an actor in a role and thought it was so perfectly cast that you couldn't imagine anyone else in the part? Hollywood doesn't care, though, as no one is deemed indispensable in the entertainment industry. If there's money to be made, and the actor plays hardball for a return, they will be replaced -- heck, studios are already trying to figure out the loopholes around using AI for digital likenesses.

There's a rare breed of actors who own pivotal roles, though. It's to the point where they have become intrinsically linked to the characters they play. If they were ever replaced, let's just say that the audience wouldn't react well to the recasting news. This isn't to say that studios and networks won't try, but everyone knows in...

Ryan Seacrest Shares Shocking Reveal About 'Wheel of Fortune' Timeline
Image
Ryan Seacrest is perhaps the most iconic American host of this generation. Between a stint as a morning talk show co-host, helming his own radio show, and the face of American Idolsince day one, Seacrest has made his mark on American media. But Wheel of Fortune may have been the toughest job yet. Stepping into the iconic hosting role made famous by Pat Sajak, Seacrest may have actually been lined up for the job longer than we thought.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Seacrest shared, “There were conversations — actually, years ago — about me doing this show, and I expressed interest even back then.” When asked if there was any trepidation about taking over for the host, he said, “When you look at what Pat and Vanna [White] have built over the years … they are your friends. What they’ve established is special. So that’s why I said yes.”

‘Wheel of Fortune’: Ryan Seacrest Drops Surprising Comment About His Job
Image
Ryan Seacrest has taken over for a lot of iconic people — Casey Kasem, Dick Clark, and now Pat Sajak. Wheel of Fortune might have been the easiest transition as he was an avid watcher, and now he has revealed that he was first sounded out about hosting the show “years ago.” Seascrest revealed the somewhat surprise news in a new interview, where he talked about being Wheel of Fortune host, getting thrown around on set, and how he prepared for his new position. “There were conversations — actually, years ago — about me doing this show, and I expressed interest even back then,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “When you look at what Pat and Vanna [White] have built over the years … they are your friends. What they’ve established is special. So that’s why I said yes.” That response came after the outlet asked him if he felt any trepidation about...

Before Scooby-Doo, Matthew Lillard & Freddie Prinze Jr. Starred In A Forgotten Sci-Fi War Movie
Image
A generation of kids grew up watching Raja Gosnell's 2002 live-action comedy flick "Scooby-Doo," an adaptation of Hanna-Barbera's long-running Scooby-Doo cartoon shows from the 1970s. In the film, Freddy, originally voiced by Frank Welker, was played by Freddie Prinze, Jr., and Shaggy, originally voiced by Casey Kasem, was played by Matthew Lillard. Prinze was squarely in the public eye after starring in hit films like "She's All That" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer," while Lillard was famous for his turns in "Hackers," "Scream," and "Slc Punk!" Lillard, incidentally, was also in "She's All That." Both actors were very much their generation's "It" boys, and the decade proved to be very lucrative for them both.

Well, "Wing Commander" notwithstanding.

"Wing Commander" is not well-remembered by too many people. It was based on a series of 1990s "Wing Commander" video games created by Chris Roberts, who also directed the film.

Quick Links Transformers in an 'X-Files' Comic? This Could Be So Much Better Than G.I. Joe

Even though 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts turned out to be the biggest box office disappointment in the franchise, the single post-credit scene at the end of the movie teased that the iconic robots in disguise could see a crossover with another Hasbro property, G.I. Joe. Not only is there the possibility of actors from previous G.I. Joe movies reprising their roles, but in an interview with Collider, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura even said, "Transformers will have more emotions and agency than ever before!"

Even with all these reports coming in about this upcoming live-action crossover in the series, fans of both properties are eager to point out that events such as this have happened plenty of times in the Transformers comic continuity. "Reset My Expectations": Matthew Lillard Candidly Reflects On Panned Scooby-Doo Sequel 20 Years Later
Image
Matthew Lillard says that he had to readjust his expectations for his career after Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed received negative reviews and underperformed at the box office. Lillard played Shaggy Rogers in both of the theatrical live action movies based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon. After the failure of the second movie, a third film was canceled, and the live-action version of the Scooby-Doo franchise moved to TV movies for Cartoon Network, which starred Nick Palatas as Shaggy.

While speaking with Business Insider, Lillard shared that after starring in the Scooby-Doo films, he thought they would take his career to new heights and that he would become a leading actor. Instead, however, the star acknowledged that the immediate aftermath led to a bit of a rough patch for him:

I thought I'd be No. 1 on the call sheet for the next 10 years of movies. And the reality was the exact opposite happened.

As we’ve discussed, the 36th season premiere boldly riffed on what a potential Simpsons series finale might look like, prompting further discussions about how,...

The Super 7 brand has continued this trend with multiple action figures, with the latest of these being based on the original version of the Decepticon leader.

Recreating his design from 1984's The Transformers, Super7's Megatron figure is an excellent representation of the robot known for ripping out his enemies' optics. Along with the figure itself, the old-school packaging even homages a specific episode of the cartoon. One of multiple releases from Super 7 based on the franchise, the toy is the way to cap off 40 years of Transformers.

Review: SuperFriends: The Complete Collection
Image
From 1973-1985, two generations of Saturday morning television were raised on the exploits of DC Comics’ stellar array of heroes on ABC’s Super Friends. While the exact title changed through the years, the Hanna-Barbera series continued to display heroes and heroines as models of truth, justice, and the American Way. There are many who, having grown up on the show, revere it. Others, those of us outgrowing that weekend ritual, found it a pale comparison to the four0-cloro source material.

I admit, I had a disdain for the series, what with its limited animation and prohibition against the good guys subduing the bad guys with their fists. As a result, you must be a fan of a certain age to find the arrival of the Super Friends complete series DVD box set a welcome treat.

There were 93 actual episodes over the dozen years, and it was a launch...

CBS Sports Ad Chief John Bogusz to Step Down (Exclusive)
Image
After decades of working to interest advertisers in the Masters, NCAA March Madness, Sunday NFL games and, most recently, Super Bowl Lviii, John Bogusz has thrown his last pass to Madison Avenue,

The CBS Sports ad-sales chief, who has been at the Paramount Global-backed network for more than 26 years, is expected to leave his role as executive vice president of sports sales following one more NCAA tournament and Masters golf competition, according to an internal memo reviewed by Variety. “Bogie,” as he is commonly known among staffers, buyers and clients, departs at a moment of transition for the sports operations at CBS. Sean McManus, the long-serving chairman of the sports business is also stepping away.

Bogusz’ exit comes after CBS orchestrated a record-setting ad haul for Super Bowl Lviii — more than $600 million, goosed in part by the match between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs going into overtime.

All 39 Scooby-Doo Movies & TV Shows Where Matthew Lillard Plays Shaggy
Image
Matthew Lillard has been voicing Shaggy in Scooby-Doo movies and TV series since the first live-action theatrical film in 2002. After replacing original voice actor Casey Kasem, Lillard has lent his voice to Shaggy in every Scooby-Doo animated TV series since 2010, except in the 2023 HBO spinoff Velma. Warner Bros. produced 25 direct-to-video animated Scooby-Doo movies from 2010-2023, all featuring Lillard as Shaggy.

An upcoming installment in the Scooby-Doo franchise will see Matthew Lillard returning as the voice of Shaggy, a role he's been playing in movies and TV shows for the past 22 years. After starring in films like Hackers, Scream, and She's All That, Matthew Lillard took on the role of the snack-loving and easily spooked Shaggy Rogers in the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film. 'I'm Really Excited': Scooby-Doo's Matthew Lillard Confirms Shaggy Return
Image
Matthew Lillard is back to voicing Shaggy after missing out on the Scoob! movie.

In 2002, Matthew Lillard made his debut in the Scooby-Doo franchise with his role as the live-action incarnation of Norville "Shaggy" Rogers. After reprising his role for the 2004 sequel, Lillard would further embody the character by becoming the official voice of Shaggy in animated movies and TV shows after original actor Casey Kasem retired in 2009. He was replaced as the voice of Shaggy for the 2020 film Scoob!, but in a new interview (via Toonado), Lillard confirmed that he's now back to work as Shaggy for an immersive Scooby-Doo project.

How To Watch All Batman Animated Series In Order
Image
Batman's animated TV series history is just as successful and diverse as his big-screen ventures. From campy to dark and brooding, there's a Batman animated show for every taste over the decades. With more DC animated shows and movies on the horizon, The Dark Knight's TV legacy continues to thrive.

Batman may be one of DC's most successful and prolific superheroes on the big screen, but the Caped Crusader has an equally - if not more - successful history in animated television series. While the character has been the star of acclaimed films such as The Dark Knight trilogy, many children grew up watching Bruce Wayne take on a wide range of foes one 30-minute segment at a time. Moreover, with Batman animated series running largely without pause since the 1960s, enjoying The Caped Crusader on TV is a multigenerational delight.

More impressive yet is the diversity that Batman's...

2 Live Crew’s Luther ‘Uncle Luke’ Campbell Stars in Docuseries About His New Role as a High School Football Coach
Image
Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell is getting as docuseries as he wanna be. Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders is among the producers behind “Coach Luke,” which chronicles the one-time 2 Live Crew frontman as he became a entrepreneur and the head coach of the Edison Senior High School football team in Miami. Mandon Lovett directs the docuseries, which is exec produced by Smac Entertainment’s Constance Schwartz-Morini, Michael Strahan and FredAnthony Smith; Swirl Films’ Eric Tomosunas and Nikki Byles; and Brian Sher and Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders. No outlet is yet attached.

Campbell, of course, is remembered for the popular late 1980s/early 1990s rap group 2 Live Crew — which managed to even hit the Billboard charts with song titles that Casey Kasem wouldn’t say out loud on his top 40 countdown. But 2 Live Crew’s lasting impact was its First Amendment fights, via Campbell and the group’s obscenity trials and Supreme Court parody cases.

What The Thirteen Ghosts Cast Has Done Since 2001
Image
Thirteen Ghosts, the 2001 supernatural horror from director Steve Beck, has a star-studded cast of household names taking top billing, but many didn't achieve this status until after the film's release. After inheriting a mansion from his uncle, widow Cyrus Kriticos (F. Murray Abraham) moves into it with his children and their nanny, only to find the house is haunted by ghosts. Thirteen Ghosts (2001) was a remake of the original of the same name, which was originally released in 1960.

At the time of release, the film got mostly negative critiques and was not well received by audiences, but over time became an unappreciated classic to many. In August 2023, it was announced that a television series adaptation inspired by the films was in development, but there has been no confirmation whether it will involve the 2001 film cast or not. However, it's clear from their established careers, they may not need to return to the Thirteen Ghosts universe.

Transformers And Winnie The Pooh Share A Certain Legendary Voice
Image
To talk about Peter Cullen's voice acting career is to take a trip through the last five decades of mainstream U.S. animation. The man has lent his voice to so many noteworthy cartoon series that it boggles the mind, including "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo," "The Smurfs," "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends," "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Muppet Babies," "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," and "Invincible." But one cannot even begin to do justice to his body of work without touching on the iconic character that he's voiced across multiple animated shows and feature films for nearly 40 years now. Truly, at this point, Cullen is all but synonymous with his onscreen counterpart: Eeyore.

After debuting as the Autobots' intrepid leader in "The Transformers" in 1984, Cullen took over voicing the most relatable resident of the Hundred Acre Wood from the late Ralph Wright (who voiced...

Ryan Seacrest is the Perfect Wheel of Fortune Host
Image
Ryan Seacrest has been a pop culture mainstay for seemingly forever. It was 2002 when he became a household name as one of two hosts for the once-dominant American Idol. But before that, one of his many gigs was hosting a short-lived Merv Griffin game show called Click. Now he has come full circle to take over hosting duties on one of Griffin's flagships: Wheel of Fortune.

Seacrest replacing Pat Sajak as Wheel of Fortune host has been met with skepticism on sites like TVLine, but it actually makes sense for the show and for him. Since Click, he's hosted several game shows. And like Sajak, at least on screen, he exudes a friendliness and charm that is almost guaranteed to eschew drama. Ryan Seacrest might not be the popular choice for Wheel of Fortune, but it's easy to see why producers wanted him -- and why he wanted the gig.

Rosie O’Donnell Admits She Hasn’t Trusted Ellen DeGeneres Since She ‘Really Hurt’ Her Feelings With ‘Mean’ Comment
Image
Rosie O’Donnell still isn’t in a great place with Ellen DeGeneres after the latter denied being friends with her.

O’Donnell told The Hollywood Reporter how the pair were among the young entertainers in Hollywood going to parties together all those years ago, so it was weird when DeGeneres said they weren’t pally.

The comedian shared of what the dynamic was like between her and DeGeneres as “two rising comics in the scene,” “It was a good relationship. We were friends. We supported each other. Which is why when she came on my show, I said, ‘Let me not have you standing there by yourself. Let’s get a joke in there.’ And we sat down and came up with that, ‘Oh my God, I love Casey Kasem. Maybe I’m Lebanese.’ It became a big thing.”

DeGeneres had gone on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” back in 1996, where she...

Bob Rice, Trailblazing Agent for Video Game Music, Dies at 79
Image
Bob Rice, who teamed with Journey to release a groundbreaking rock music video game and represented top-notch composers like Steve Ouimette, Sascha Dikiciyan and Inon Zur in the industry, has died. He was 79.

Rice died Wednesday night of Copd at an assisted living facility in Santa Clara, California, publicist Greg O’Connor-Read told The Hollywood Reporter.

Rice created and executive produced what was perhaps the first rock video game, “Journey Escape.” Released by Data Age in 1982 for the Atari 2600 console and narrated by Casey Kasem, it featured band members Steve Perry, Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory and Steve Smith as primitive digitized avatars.

Gamers were tasked in the instructions with guiding each musician “past hordes of Love-Crazed Groupies, Sneaky Photographers and Shifty-eyed Promoters to the safety of the Journey Escape Vehicle in time to make the next concert. Your mighty manager and loyal roadies are there to help, but the escape is up to you!

Batman Cartoons Had A Rough Start Before The Animated Series
Image
"Batman: The Animated Series" is one of the crowning achievements of American animation. To this day, it's remembered for its atmospheric art design (homaging Fleischer Studios' Superman cartoons) and mature storytelling — even if it never forgot its young target audience along the way. The series' star, the late, legendary Kevin Conroy, is the definitive voice of the Dark Knight for a generation, while Harley Quinn, who was created for the series, has become the most successful DC Comics character who didn't originate in the comics.

The series' success meant its creative team shaped Batman in animation for the next decade. In 1993, the series led to the theatrical film, "Mask of the Phantasm," which took everything great about the series and pushed it further. While "Batman: The Animated Series" ended in 1995, it became only the first installment in the DC Animated Universe, which culminated wiith "Justice League Unlimited," which ran from...

Review: The Adventures of Batman
Image
Filmation caught lightning in a bottle. In 1965 or so, with no real money or track record, they bamboozled DC Comics into licensing Superman for animated fare. Just as the Man of Steel flew to his Broadway debut and Batmania was sweeping the country, they gave us Superman cartoons, followed by Aqualand and friends. Finally, in 1968, six months after the live-action series left ABC, CBS Saturday Morning welcomed The Batman/Superman Hour, mixing the 1966 super-doings with brand new 12-minute Bat-capades.

All 34 capers are now packaged in remastered form as The Adventures of Batman, a two-disc set from Warner Home Entertainment. At 10, I was delighted by these, even if some of the equipment and villains didn’t look quite on model, and even at that tender age, I recognized how many shots were reused to stretch the animation budget.

They played it straight and in animated form, worked without the camp element...

Recording Sessions For The Transformers Series Were 'Bedlam' Behind The Scenes
Image
In 1984, a lot of laws about what was and wasn't allowed in children's TV programming began to loosen. Throughout the decade, more and more companies became incredibly brazen about including advertising content directly into their TV shows, transforming many shows into 30-minute commercials for toys. An '80s child would watch a show, knowing they could soon hound their parents to buy them the toy counterparts of their favorite characters. This branding became deeply insidious, and many children of the 1980s grew up with a deep and abiding nostalgia for their favorite toy ads. Artistry, character, writing, storytelling, and mythology were all distant, tertiary concerns during this era, and the bulk of animated shows from the '80s are deeply, deeply terrible as a result.

The Transformers toy line was launched in 1984 after Hasbro repurposed multiple robot molds from a Japanese toy line. The Transformers were robots who could be...

The Cast Of Transformers: The Movie Were Given A Warning Before Working With Orson Welles
Image
Orson Welles was just 26 when he wrote, produced, directed, and starred in "Citizen Kane." The 1941 film revolutionized the young industry. It boldly broke from the traditional linear storytelling pattern with a non-linear narrative told from several perspectives. Welles and cinematographer Gregg Toland introduced new cinematography techniques still used in modern filmmaking. Welles perfected the use of the montage, telling the complex life story of protagonist Charles Foster Kane in just under two hours. Welles broke established cinematic rules beginning with the film's opening moments.

The character Charles Foster Kane is loosely based on media magnate and yellow journalism originator William Randolph Hearst. But "Citizen Kane" might also have been a prophetic story of Orson Welles' own life. After multiple marriages, reclusive periods in his life, and struggles with weight as he aged left many to draw comparisons to his own creation, Charles Foster Kane.

The man that began his film...

The Key To Scooby-Doo's Longevity Is That It's Never Stopped Changing
Image
When word got out that HBO Max was working on a Velma origin story, fan responses were all over the place. It's not that "Scooby-Doo" fans dislike the four-eyed, orange-clad investigator who's been integral to Mystery Inc. since it first began in 1969. Rather, the hesitant responses to "Velma" were related to other aspects of the Mindy Kaling-led show, including its adult humor and violence, changes in animation style and characterization, and a conspicuous lack of the crime-solving Great Dane himself.

But if you look closely at the history of the long-running franchise, it's clear that for as long as Scooby and the gang have been on the air in some form or another, the shows have been repeatedly reinventing. And while that constant reinvention has often caused cyclical, ahistorical outrage from picky viewers, it's also the key to what makes "Scooby-Doo" so satisfying after all these years.

The 1969 Classic...

Why Freddie Prinze Jr. Quit Scooby-Doo Movie Franchise
Image
With 20 years behind him and the franchise, Freddie Prinze Jr. opens up about why he quit starring in the Scooby-Doo movies. Prinze Jr. starred in the live-action adaptations of the iconic Hanna-Barbera cartoon as Fred, the de facto leader of the central group of mystery solvers Mystery Inc., well-known for his bravado and his devising of plans to capture whatever perpetrator is at the heart of the mystery. Joined by Matthew Lillard, real wife Sarah Michelle Gellar and Linda Cardellini, the Scooby-Doo movies scored generally mixed-to-negative reviews at the time of their releases, but were box office successes.

In a recent profile piece with Esquire, Freddie Prinze Jr. reflected on his long-standing career in the film and TV industries. When asked about the Scooby-Doo movie franchise, the Fred actor recalled his frustrations working on the live-action projects, namely the changes in scripts, but explained why he quit the series, citing...

James Gunn Reveals Scooby-Doo Movie You Never Got To See
Shaggy
Scooby-Doo has always walked a wobbly line between kid-friendly antics and grown-up gags. Although one of the many cartoon series Hanna-Barbara produced in the late ’60s and ’70s, complete with bubble-gum pop tunes and recycled animation, Scooby-Doo is fundamentally a horror show starring hippies. It didn’t take too much imagination to see why Scooby and Shaggy were always hungry. Even better, Scooby-Doo ended every episode by revealing that capitalism was the true monster, predating “elevated horror” by several decades.

With such a mixed history, it’s no surprise to learn that when Scooby-Doo got a live action, big-budget adaptation in the early 2000s, filmmakers had wanted to make the subtext text. And who better to help them than James Gunn, who got his big-budget start on the movie? Today, we know Gunn as the guy who made us empathize with an emotionally insecure murder racoon and mourn the tragedy befalling a mind-controlling space starfish.
