Aliens Expanded
Image
Alright, sweethearts, you heard the man and you know the drill. There have been plenty of documentaries about Aliens before, as anyone who has owned the beloved 1986 sci-fi sequel from James Cameron on its various formats can attest (some hardcore fans still insist the 1992 LaserDisc Special Edition release has never been bettered). But there has never been any documentary quite as extensive, expansive or exhaustive as Aliens Expanded, a title that lives heartily up to its name due to a near-five-hour runtime — not quite as long as an unusually long hypersleep, but not far off. It comes from writer-director Ian Nathan, who has literally written the book on the film.

As with 2019’s Memory: The Origins Of Alien, about Ridley Scott’s original film (also featuring contributions from Nathan), this aims to be the definitive take on a definitive genre classic. With a runtime like that, it is fair to...

Slasher: Ripper Review: Blood, Guts, And A Lot Of Heart
Image
I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."

Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a great one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each.

"AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's "Castle Rock," to Syfy's "Channel Zero." Before "AHS," you'd have to...

Slasher: Ripper Exclusive Clip: Basil Desperately Tries to Unmask the Widow
Slasher (2016)
The latest chapter of Slasher is well underway.

On Slasher: Ripper Episode 3, Basil (Eric McCormack) is on a mission to unmask the Widow.

In doing so, he realizes that someone from his rich inner circle might be responsible.

If the Widow taught us anything in the first two episodes of this Shudder and AMC+ drama, they are ready to dole out justice towards the elite.

As a result, people are dropping like flies, and it looks like Basil and his powerful friends are harboring a fateful secret about an event several years before.

In an exclusive clip shared with TV Fanatic, we see the extent Basil is willing to go to get answers.

He's not the nicest person, but he strikes me as the kind of person who will find answers easier than some other characters.

With power and influence, it's easier to get things done, but in the Slasher sandbox,...

Synopsis: "Slasher: Ripper takes the franchise back in time to the late 19th century and follows Basil Garvey (McCormack), a charismatic tycoon whose success is only rivaled by his ruthlessness, as he oversees a city on the cusp of a new century, and a social upheaval that will see its streets run red with blood. There’s a killer stalking the mean streets, but instead of targeting the poor and downtrodden like Jack the Ripper, The Widow is meting out justice against the rich and powerful. The only person standing in the way of this killer is the newly promoted detective, Kenneth Rijkers, whose ironclad belief in justice may...

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 8 Review: All In
Daniel Kash
I can already hear the critics of Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 8, but I think it's perfectly reasonable that gambling and poker are still a going concern in the 32nd Century.

And that casino's dragon hologram greeter is exactly what 32nd Century Vegas or Macau needs.

Mostly though, I appreciate that we're getting a glimpse at what that gap year with Book looked like for Burnham between Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 1 and Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 2.

While we start with the main players far apart in space and mission, there's a lot of landscape to admire as they set the stage.

On the political front, the whole "united front" bit from Vance is a pretty straight-shooting line for the well-spoken admiral.

I've always seen him more as a guarded mentor or guide, toeing that party line no matter his personal feelings, completely trusting in his higher-ups' judgment.

It...

‘Clarice’ Season Finale: Two Dead Amid Resolution To Murder Mystery As Series Ends On CBS
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the season finale of CBS and MGM Television’s Clarice.

Putting her career on the line to aid them in their investigation is Clarice’s fellow agent and best friend, Ardelia (Devyn A. Tyler), who is told by her boss to stay out of the matter, but refuses to do so.

While it’s clear by the beginning of Episode 13 that Hagen is behind the aforementioned murders, one...

Image
Epic Pictures have released a trailer and poster for director Patrick White’s supernatural horror Queen of Spades – which stars Ava Preston, Daniel Kash, Kaelen Ohm, Eric Osborne, Jamie Bloch, Nabil Rajo, and Krista Marchand – and is based on a Russian take on the same mythos as Candyman.

The film, whose same story was told in the 2018 direct to DVD film Queen of Spades: Dark Rite, follows four teenagers that summon an ominous entity as a joke, not knowing what horrors lie ahead for them and their loved ones when the evil they’ve unleashed will stop at nothing to take their souls.

According to legend, an ominous entity known as the Queen of Spades can be summoned by performing an ancient ritual. Those brave enough draw a door and a staircase on a mirror, in darkness, and say her name three times. What happens next must be experienced to be believed.

12 Monkeys Season 2 Episode 10 Review: Fatherland
Ramse can be irritating, sure, but at least this mission turned out to be worthwhile.

I am sure I'm not the only Monkeys' fan waiting patiently to learn Olivia's origin story. Man, did 12 Monkeys Season 2 Episode 10 deliver a fascinating timey-wimey tale for the Tall Man's little sister. It was simultaneously heartbreaking and unpredictable.

With the coordinates to Titan ripped from the map, will Ramse go after the Witness alone? He better not kill anyone breaking out of the facility.

It was clear this was going to be another fast-paced installment. We learned on 12 Monkeys Season 2 Episode 9 that a German doctor "supposedly" knew the whereabouts of the Witness.

Well, this episode hit the ground running in Berlin 2016. That said, in true Monkeys fashion, Olivia was the last person I expected to see there. What was her connection to the mysterious doctor and that lab? We got the Tall Man's story, so...

Aliens: the brilliance of Lance Henriksen’s Bishop
facebook

twitter

google+

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Aliens, we look at one of its very best performances - Lance Henriksen’s gentle android, Bishop...

When cinema-goers queued up to see Aliens in 1986, seven years had already passed since its predecessor, Alien. While a follow-up to the 79 hit had been discussed at Fox for years, it took James Cameron to finally bring it to fruition - and it’s fair to say that he created something far more than a typical sequel of the era.

Where franchises like Halloween, Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street largely followed the template established by the first film, Cameron attempted something vastly more ambitious: a continuation and expansion of Ridley Scott’s classic, a second chapter in its resourceful heroine Ripley’s story - one where she’s transformed from traumatised survivor to avenging warrior.

Much has been written about the brilliance of Aliens,...

It's Decision Time in these Photos and Promo for Hannibal Episode 2.12 - Tome-Wan; Two New Post Mortem Videos
A great weight was lifted from our shoulders when NBC renewed "Hannibal," but it's only getting heavier for Will as we head toward the season finale. First we (and Hannibal, it seems) have to get through next week's Episode 2.12, "Tome-Wan." Check out some photos and a promo.

As a bonus - two bonuses actually - more installments of the show's companion web series, "Post Mortem with Scott Thompson," have arrived so be sure to watch co-star Caroline Dhavernas discuss her character, her name, and Will Graham's irresistible flaws.

She's followed by cinematographer James Hawkinson talking about the show's signature look, how he breaks down a script, and shooting in northern light.

NBC also just released the synopsis for the Season 2 finale, Episode 2.13, "Mizumono," so we've included that as well if you'd like to know even more about what's coming. If you'd rather not, we've put it at the bottom...

Do Not See this Film Solo: A Movie Review
Director/writer: Isaac Cravit. Cast: Annie Clark, Daniel Kash, Richard Clarkin, Steven Love and Alyssa Capriotti. Solo is a backwoods thriller, which was released late in 2013. The film primarily focuses on one character, Gillian (Annie Clark), and her overnight stay on an isolated island. Events take on a psychological element, when a stranger appears on the island. Solo is an indie feature with only a few characters. Still, there is suspense and a little mystery here as first time director Isaac Cravit delivers a compelling feature. A little more horror could have been introduced in this film, but Solo does deliver enough tension to warrant film fans' time. The film begins and ends with the protagonist, Gillian. She has hopes of becoming a camp counsellour. However, she must pass an initiation rite, which leaves her alone on an island for two nights. The situation gets a little stranger when Gillian...

'Orphan Black' finale: Were our questions answered?
Turns out being the offspring of a genetically-modified clone has its upsides - after being flattened by a speeding car last week, Sarah's sprog Kira (Skyler Wexler) makes a miraculous recovery as Orphan Black's final double-bill begins…

Except Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) doesn't believe in miracles and neither do we - does Kira possess some sort of healing ability or enhanced durability as a result of what's been done to her mother?

In the aftermath of the accident, Sarah has her sights set on Helena, while Tomas (Daniel Kash) has his sights set on Sarah - but he doesn't reckon on his unhinged clone-killer turning on him and soon Tomas is left cowering - brutalised and locked in the same cage where he once kept Helena…

With all this going on, episode nine 'Unconscious Selection' just has time to pack in one final humongous twist - possibly the biggest jaw-dropper...

'Orphan Black' episodes 7 and 8: This week's biggest questions
One question dominates BBC Three's Orphan Black - who can be trusted? Each of the show's characters - from Sarah (Tatiana Maslany) to Paul (Dylan Bruce) to Olivier (David Richmond-Peck) - is telling lies or only sharing half-truths - and this week, in a double-bill, events grow ever more mind-frazzingly complex…

Paul, at least, is apparently on the side of the angels - or as close as this show gets. When he warns Sarah - over the phone - that Olivier knows the truth about her identity swap with Beth, he ends up captive, drugged and beaten.

To save Paul, Sarah forms an uneasy alliance with Helena - promising her information in exchange for rescuing her hunky beau - and the tail-sporting Olivier soon finds himself mutilated and confined to a hospital, where he's finished off by an agent of Aldous Leekie (Matt Frewer).

Leekie's end-game is still a mystery...

As part of her initiation, she must spend two nights by herself on the camp's island, an intimidating collision of rock and wilderness carved out of the lake, supposedly haunted by the ghost of a camper who disappeared suspiciously decades before. When Gilllian's "solo" is interrupted by a local man responding to a distress call, what was meant to be a peaceful time alone in nature devolves into something disturbingly different.

As her paranoia mounts, a horrifying secret is uprooted and Gillian finds herself in a desperate fight to survive.

Orphan Black Redux: Clones and Siblings and Twins, Oh My!
Whatever we were expecting about a show that features clones, we certainly were not expecting Orphan Black to whip out the twins card too. When Sarah’s (Tatiana Maslany) birth mother finally makes an appearance, it is not the fact that she was a mere surrogate that gets our attention, but rather the critical piece of information that she carried two babies to birth – she had twins. That’s right, that special bond between Helena and Sarah was more than just the clone DNA drawing them together, it was their twin-bond. The clever birth mother sought to protect the babies she carried, so she gave one to the state and one to the church. It probably seemed like a reasonable and safe option at the time. But years later, after seeing how Helena fared growing up under a radical devote regime through the church, that decision seems a bit dubious.

Orphan Black Redux: Clone Club Implodes
In last week’s episode “Entangled Bank” we saw Sarah, Cosima and Allison (all played by Tatiana Maslany) spiraling out in their lives. Cosima took a giant leap and seduced her monitor Delphine (Evelyne Brouchu), which only gave Delphine the perfect opportunity to snoop around and get a good look at Cosima’s notes on all the clones. Then Allison revealed that her and her husband Donnie (Kristian Bruun) were getting a divorce, which led to drunken binging and sleeping with her suspected monitor’s husband. And Sarah, trying to hold the clone club together, decided to enlist Mrs. S (Maria Doyle Kennedy) into the club and see what information she could provide. Unfortunately, little Kira (Skyler Wexler) bore the brunt of all the clones’ secrets when she happily took Helena’s hand for a walk, which ended tragically.

With the noose tightening around them, Sarah, Allison and Cosima were not exactly playing it safe.

Mama (2013) Review
Reviewed by Jesse Miller, MoreHorror.com

Anything that has a “Guillermo Del Toro Presents…” tag above a film, be it horror or otherwise, I know I can get excited about because that man just has an eye for some bizarre and refreshingly original content and he hasn’t let me down yet.

Mama comes from the twisted minds of Andrés Muschietti and Bárbara Muschietti and is the result of Guillermo Del Toro discovering their 2008 short film Mamá and being so impressed by it that he helped the duo develop a feature film around the concept with bigger toys to play with in the sandbox.

I could begin this sentence by going into the plot and setting up the storyline for you all, but Mama is one of those horror films where you are best going into blind and discovering plot details for yourself and even beginning to describe how this...

Jessica Chastain at an event for Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Universal Wants a Sequel to Guillermo Del Toro's Mama
Jessica Chastain at an event for Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Universal Pictures is eyeing Mama as a potential franchise, with early discussions under way about making a sequel to director Andres Muschietti's horror-thriller.

Here's what Universal Studios International president David Kosse had to say about a potential follow-up.

"We think there's potential for a Mama franchise. We'd like to do another one. But those conversations are in the early stages. Mama is the first of this type of model that we've had enormous success with so there are more opportunities for this kind of film."

The model he is speaking of is the Universal Studios International co-production with Barbara Muschietti's company Toma 78, where the project was reconceived as an English-language Canadian-Spanish co-production. Universal had initially planned on making the film a Spanish-language production.

Mama has earned an impressive $89.2 million worldwide, with $68.2 coming from the U.S. The movie has yet to open in 43 key territories, such as UK,...

Jessica Chastain at an event for Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Mama Movie Review
Jessica Chastain at an event for Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Film: "Mama"; Actors: Jessica Chastain, Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, Daniel Kash, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nelisse, Director: Andres Muschietti; Rating: ** - not so terrifying.

Stretched from an exciting three-minute short film of the same name, "Mama" the feature film, is not in any way exciting. It neither has a complicated story, nor is it a very serious film. It starts off with great expectations, but does not sustain the excitement as it progresses. Nevertheless, it has its moments of weirdness and creepy visual effects.

It is set during the global financial crisis of 2007 to 2008. The film starts off with Jeff, a.

Mama Review: Efficient, Stylish Horror Fare Boosted By Strong Performances
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Guillermo Del Toro seems to put his name on just about everything these days – some great, some not so great – but here’s a film from a hot up-and-comer who definitely deserves the rub. Adapting his 3-minute short of the same name, Spanish director Andres Muschietti is able to craft a slick if unoriginal mood piece that delivers a few eerie thrills and benefits massively from the stirring presence of Jessica Chastain in the lead role.

The film opens as a man named Jeffrey, sent into an irreparable tailspin by the 2008 financial meltdown, hits rock-bottom, deciding to kill himself and his two young daughters, Victoria and Lilly. However, fate has other plans; a mysterious unseen entity saves the girls from sure death while disposing of their father.

Five years later, Jeffrey’s brother Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is still searching for his nieces with the help of his girlfriend,...

Mama Motion Test Featurette
Javier Botet
Universal Pictures' horror-thriller Mama took the top spot at the box office last weekend, taking in an impressive $28.1 million. The studio has released an intriguing behind-the-scenes video that shows fans how Mama herself came to life. This motion test reveals actor Javier Botet's unorthodox movements that, combined with prosthetics, makeup, and CGI hair, brought this creepy character to the silver screen in director Andres Muschietti's captivating thriller.

Mama was released January 18th, 2013 and stars Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nélisse, Daniel Kash, Javier Botet, Jane Moffat, Morgan McGarry. The film is directed by Andres Muschietti.

Mama (2013)
Directed by: Andrés Muschietti

Written by: Neil Cross, Andrés Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti

Featuring: Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nélisse, Jane Moffat, Daniel Kash

Like most horror fans, I await any film with Guillermo del Toro's name attached to it. The man knows and loves the genre and has a deep respect for its fans. So, because del Toro is "presenting" the new film Mama, I went in wanting to love it. But the flick is so bloated with pointless scenes, superficial characters and cheap jump scares, it never generates any sense of suspense or fear.

Mama is set during the recent stock market collapse, after Jeffrey (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), whose firm is suffering heavy losses, shoots several people at his office. He flees to the home of his estranged wife, kills her and drives off with their two daughters, Victoria and Lilly.

On an ice-covered mountain pass, Jeffrey loses control of the car,...

Mama | Review
Director: Andres Muschietti Writer: Andres Muschietti Starring: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Jessica Chastain, Megan Charpentier, Isabelle Nelisse, Daniel Kash, Javier Botet Guillermo Del Toro has, by now, established an Mo for the projects he attaches himself to: children face the unknown through contact with sometimes insidious, sometimes benevolent supernatural beings, generally with dark results. Mama, produced by Del Toro and written and directed by newcomer Andres Muschietti, gets the formula right in a refreshingly beautiful horror film. In Mama, the children in question are two girls, Victoria (Megan Charpentier) and Lily (Isabelle Nelisse) who are abandoned in a snowy cabin. They survive five years in the wilderness through the protection of a magnanimous spirit that they call “Mama.” But when the girls are discovered and rendered into the care of their uncle, Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his less nurturing girlfriend, Annabel (Jessica Chastain), Mama shows itself to be far less kind-hearted at...
