This 22-Year-Old Disney Movie May Have a Hidden Meaning Most Fans Missed
Image
Cadet Kelly is a 2002 Disney Channel film starring Hilary Duff that people have read as containing queer-coded themes for years. In Cadet Kelly, Kelly goes to a military school against her will. Her personality clashes with Captain Jessica Stone, with whom she has a love-hate relationship. The movie contains scenes, motifs, and themes that resonate among the LGBTQ+ community.

The 2000s were filled with many classic romantic and comedy movies about teenage life. Mean Girls is a clear example of a high school-set film transcending time. However, Cadet Kelly, released on Disney Channel in 2002, was a unique approach to the genre. Not only does the film occur in a female military academy, which already goes against gender expectations, but Cadet Kelly also mainly focuses on female relationships, healthy family dynamics, and teenage identity.

Led by star Hilary Duff when she was only 15 years old, Cadet Kelly explores themes of individualism,...

Movies You May Have Missed: ‘At Your Service’ Review (2011)
Image
Welcome to the latest installment in our regular Movies You May Have Missed series here on Nerdly, in which I highlight some of, what I think, are the best movies that have flown under the radar of many or have been “forgotten” in the intervening years since its release. This time round it’s At Your Service, aka Servitude, a 2011 Canadian comedy about the restaurant industry.

Stars: Joe Dinicol, Rachel Skarsten, John Bregar, Enrico Colantoni, David Foley, Margot Kidder, Lauren Collins, Aaron Ashmore, Kristen Hager, Linda Kash | Written by Michael Sparaga | Directed by Warren P Sonoda

If there’s two things I’m a fan of it’s Ryan Reynolds’ movies and Canada. Put those two together and you get At Your Service, the story of a group of servers and staff at a franchise chain restaurant (much like Ryan Reynolds’ Waiting) who have one last wild night at their...

New US Trailer for Indie Drama 'Jump, Darling' with Cloris Leachman
Jump, Darling (2020)
"Your grandmother seems to think you've moved in." Breaking Glass Pics have revealed a new US trailer for a Canadian indie drama titled Jump, Darling, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Philip J. Connell. We also featured the other Canadian trailer a year ago. This first premiered at the 2020 Toronto Inside Out Film Festival, opening in the US this month. It's one of the final films starring the extraordinary Cloris Leachman, who passed away at the age of 94 last year. Thomas Duplessie stars as a rookie drag queen, reeling from a break-up, who escapes to the country, where he finds his grandmother in steep decline yet desperate to stay away from a nursing home. Leachman co-stars with Linda Kash, Jayne Eastwood, Daniel Jun, Mark Caven, and Andrew Bushell. This looks really wonderful, there's something alluring and deeply honest about it. I'm still looking forward to catching up with this...

‘Jump, Darling’: Breaking Glass Pictures Acquires Family Drama Featuring Cloris Leachman’s Final Performance
Image
Exclusive: Breaking Glass Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to Jump, Darling, an LGBTQ+ family drama featuring the final performance of the late screen icon Cloris Leachman, with plans to release it in theaters and on digital and VOD in March.

The film written and directed by Phil Connell tells the story of Russell (newcomer Thomas Duplessie), an aspiring actor otherwise known for his drag persona, Fishy Falters. After a disastrous non-debut at Toronto drag club Peckers, Russell leaves his status-conscious boyfriend and takes shelter in Canadian wine country with his grandmother Margaret (Leachman)—a woman coming to terms with her own mortality, who is at the same time determined to hang on to her independence.

While Russell struggles to establish himself at the local dive bar and flirts with not-so-straight busboy Zachary (Kawku Adu-Poku), Margaret fends off the best intentions...

‘Jump, Darling’ Review: Drag Performer Ascends, Grandma Exits in One of Cloris Leachman’s Last Turns
Image
Not even the final feature for recently-deceased Cloris Leachman (she put two more in the can before passing this January at age 94), “Jump, Darling” nonetheless is primarily of interest for that veteran performer’s participation. Otherwise, writer-director Phil Connell’s debut feature treads ground similar to last year’s “Stage Mother,” whose somewhat retro emphasis on lip-synching drag performance as a vehicle for self-realization likewise recalled a much earlier dramedy from Canada, “Outrageous!”

If that theme was groundbreaking 44 years ago, it seems rather quaint now, and “Jump” doesn’t help its case by centering on a troubled young protagonist whose issues are as murky as their apparent solution is simplistic. However, playing his senile yet still tart-tongued grandmother, Leachman lends the film a certain unforced gravitas that provides compensational rewards. Those looking for familiar seriocomic beats in a modest but polished LGBTQ-targeted indie will find this pleasant enough. Currently playing gay festivals,...

Fargo Season 3, Episode 5 Review: The House of Special Purpose
Welp, my wife just rage-quit. You see, things got pretty nasty this week in Fargo, no one is spared their misery -- granted, some fared worse than others. At the halfway point we're no closer to realizing the actual plot of this season, which may actually involve no plot at all. It's entirely possible that Fargo Season 3 is some kind of social studies test invented by creator Noah Hawley, to see how far he can push his audience and assess what they're willing to endure in the name of mid-week entertainment. Alas, my wife says, "no más," so I'm on my own from here on out.

We open on a lovely scene of blackmail via sex tape -- its 2010, the height of such idiocy in America. A package left at the Stussy doorstep, marked for Emmit's "eyes only," but Mrs. Stussy (Linda Kash) returns home early, opens the package, and plays the tape.

‘Fargo’ Review: The Danger Lurking in Season 3 Becomes Very, Very Real as Ewan McGregor’s Brothers Go to War
Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Jason Schwartzman, and Allison Tolman in Fargo (2014)
[Editor’s Note: The review below contains spoilers for “Fargo” Season 3, Episode 5, “The House of Special Purpose.”]

Immediate Reaction

It finally happened. After four weeks of relatively harmless fun — save for the comically killed Maurice Lafay (Scoot McNairy) — “Fargo” took us to the emotional woodshed. It happens every season, at different times and in different ways, but Season 3 hit particularly hard by crossing lines on and off screen.

“The House of Special Purpose” began with back-to-back scenes of graphic, if a bit goofy, content. First, Ray (Ewan McGregor) permanently severed ties with his brother, Emmit, via a faked sex tape meant as blackmail. The only problem was Ray and Nikki (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) left the tape out in the open, and too many eyes witnessed its contents. We watch it, Emmit watches it, and, unintentionally, Emmit’s wife, Stella (Linda Kash), watched it before any of us. While devastating to Emmit, seeing Ray and Nikki in a bad wig — consummating their engagement in front of a video...
