SSMB29: SS Rajamouli & Mahesh Babu’s Much-Awaited Next To Be Titled Gen 63? New Theory Explored
Image
Will SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu’s SSMB29 Be Titled Gen 63?(Photo Credit –Instagram)

SSMB29 is one of the most anticipated films in recent times, and the reason for that is the collaboration between director SS Rajamouli and Mahesh Babu. However, SSMB29 is just a placeholder name, and the official title has not yet been revealed.

Previously, publications like IndiaForums speculated that the title could be Garuda or Maharaj. Now, a new contender, Gen 63, has entered the race. Like the others, the new tentative title is also just speculation for now.

SSMB29 To Gen 63: Why This Title?

Gen 63 became the new contender for the tentative title of the movie because of its connection to the story. According to Peeping Moon, the protagonist played by Mahesh Babu is the 63rd descendant of an ancient ancestor. Due to his lineage and place in it, the film could be titled Gen 63.

Gangs Of Wasseypur Part 2 Celebrates 13 Years-Manoj Bajpayee speaks
Image
Subhash K Jha has turned his focus to revisit Anurag Kashyap Gangs Of Wasseypur Part 2, which released in 2012 and we hear from star Manoj Bajpayee an out the making of the film.

Released two weeks after Part 1, Part 2 was even more violent. If you try to count the numbers of bullets that are fired at unsuspecting victims in the ferociously violent world inhabited by Anurag Kashyap’s trigger-happy goons, you might end up cross-eyed. Caught in the crossfire of vendetta and redemption the characters of Gangs of Wasseypur 2 are so on-the-edge they don’t fear the abyss that awaits them at the end of their vengeful voyage.

In any case, no one in Kashyap’s God-forsaken kingdom takes cops seriously, not even the cops themselves. There’s a typically wry Kashyap joke just before interval when the raging protagonist Faizal(or ‘Faijal’, as everyone including his sexy wife calls him...

Nishaanchi Teaser Review: Anurag Kashyap Brings Masala With ‘Heengh-Mirch’ ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Anurag Kashyap is a name that is an entire genre in itself. The filmmaker has always a promised raw, unfiltered, and gritty cinema and he has promised yet again a gritty piece with the trailer of his upcoming film Nishaanchi. Kashyap has given us a chaos that is beautiful in Gangs Of Wasseypur and he has gifted us discomfort and suffocation that is haunting in Ugly.

His new film, starring Aaishvary Thackeray alongside Vedika Pinto, Monika Panwar, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Kumud Mishra, aims to be a desi entertainer, but after watching the trailer, I have mixed feelings!,

While I hope that my worst fears do not come true, the problem here is, I am a Taurus and they have great intuitive powers. And it confirms our worst fears and, perhaps, our secret hopes. Clearly, Nishaanchi trailer is the safest,...

Anurag Kashyap has tried his hand at acting as well. His recent performance in the Tamil movie ‘Imaikkaa Nodigal‘ directed by R. Ajay Gnanamuthu has been raved about by critics and audiences alike.

Director Neera Ghaywan On 10 Years Of Masaan
Image
From the beginning Neeraj Ghaywan was clear that he needed to connect with the grassroots through Masaan. “When we were shooting for Gangs Of Wasseypur in and around Varanasi I was sure Varanasi was where I wanted to shoot my first film. This is the Indian heartland. I wanted to capture a side of the Holy City not seen before. We have for long imagined the city as being film with Sadhus smoking ganja at the ghats. I wanted to look at a city in transition caught between tradition and progress.”

He was lucky to get a perfect cast. “From the beginning it was supposed to be Richa Chadha. I worked with her when I assisted Anurag Kashyap on Gangs Of Wasseypur. I had also zeroed in on Manoj Bajpai and Rajkummar Rao for two principal roles in Masaan. Their dates couldn’t be worked out. I signed Sanjay Mishra and Vicky Kaushal instead.

The Banished Review: Technically Strong, Thematically Weak
Image
Joseph Sims-Dennett’s The Banished situates itself within the vast, intimidating Australian wilderness, a landscape that has long served as a potent backdrop for stories of isolation and survival. The film introduces us to Grace, a young woman processing the death of a father with whom she shared a troubled history.

Her grief is complicated by a pressing duty: she must find her estranged brother, David, to deliver the news. This sense of familial obligation, a powerful and universal motivator, propels her toward the remote forest where David was last seen.

We learn he had joined a mysterious commune, one of several unsettling details suggesting that this is a place that swallows people whole. Grace’s personal quest for closure soon becomes a desperate struggle against an unknown, menacing presence, shifting from a somber drama to a tense fight for her life.

A Disorienting Narrative

The film tells its story through a fractured timeline,...

This Day That Year: Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan
Image
In another great installment of This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha looks back at Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan which released in 2010.

Udaan which completed 15 years on July 16, was a ballsy debut by Vikramaditya Motwane, who once assisted the angst-laden Sanjay Leela Bhansali and then his angst-cousin Anurag Kashyap. You can see the lasting impression of both the senior creators in the way Motwane designs the uneasy and violent relationship between the 17-year old Rohan (Rajat Barmecha) and his tyrannical father (Ronit Roy) who’s almost villainous in his despotism.

When Udaan is not busy trying to be a regular nudge-nudge-wink-wink coming-of-age film (Billy Elliot-goes-to-Jamshedpur) it gives us some great moments of cinema , done in shades that leave the camera lens far behind to romance the very core of middleclass life (no doubt corroded and outdated) in the soporific ‘steel town’ . The film starts with a mildly amusing boys-disastrous-night-out-from-boarding-school...

Manoj Bajpayee: “ Aks was a very, very important film in my career”
Image
Manoj Bajpayee speaks to Subhash K Jha about a film he saysxwas very challenging and very important to his career – 2001’s supernatural action thriller film, Aks, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.

Manoj, one of your important early films is 24 ?

Aks was a very, very important film in my career. This film I signed in 1999, I think, and right after Satya and Shool and Kaun. Anurag Kashyap told me that Rakeysh Mehra is willing to meet me and when I met him, I heard the first narration till the interval and somewhere it was very, very clear that I’m going to be part of it.

It was a very challenging role?

I could see that, you know, it is going to challenge me to approach this character Raghavan very differently. Also since there were no dialogues I had to create all of it in my head.

Aks was a very...

Revisiting Jagga Jasoos – Anurag Basu’s Honourable Failure
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos, which featured Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.

It is heartbreaking to reject a film that has so much heart in it. Jagga Jasoos wore a huge Barfi hangover. It reminded you of the cinematic styles of several storytelling legends from Satyajit Ray to Tim Burton, but ultimately it failed to meet any of the master storytellers.

Finally, this was a world that only Anurag Basu inhabits and comprehends. I am not too sure if that’s a reason to rejoice. We can only partake of the goodies from the outside, like curious tourists peering into an exotic country from a cruising. The storytelling devices in Jagga Jasoos deliberately distance us from the bizarre goings on. The plot is a one-liner stretched vast acres of exposition and posturing.

A lot of the lengthy playing time is taken up by Ranbir’s Jagga...

Rewinding Emotion: The Power of Flashback in Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Lootera’
Vikramaditya Motwane
The Power of Flashback in Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Lootera’: In Hindi films, flashbacks occupy a critical role. Not only do they allow for the possibility of a non-linear narrative, but they also add a self-reflexivity to the story. So, it is also not uncommon to see a whole film play out as a flashback as a character reflects on the story. It is fair to say, however, that the flashback technique has been used both used and abused countless times in Hindi films. When done right, it helps to add another layer to the characters and the story. A minute detail is enough to make the film more than itself.

Flashbacks are also unique to the medium of films, coming as an extension of story writing. As a fact of life, the way flashbacks play out on screen is not supposed to make sense. And yet, while Anurag Kashyap...

Amazon Doubles Down on Dual Streaming Strategy in India With Prime Video and Mx Player
Image
In a wide-ranging conversation at the Apos summit in Bali on Wednesday, senior regional executives from Amazon laid out their vision for the company’s twin-pronged streaming strategy in India, where the tech giant operates both the subscription-based Prime Video platform and the ad-supported service Amazon Mx Player. The dual-service approach, they argued, is key to capturing India’s vast and varied entertainment consumer base.

“India is a really heterogeneous and diverse country with customers having very different needs,” said Gaurav Gandhi, vp of Prime Video for Asia Pacific and Mena. “Prime Video caters to customers who are subscription-ready, who have actually transitioned to streaming as their first or only choice of entertainment. Amazon Mx Player is aimed at customers who are now transitioning from traditional media — TV or they are not subscription-ready yet — though they are still seeking high-quality premium content.”

Prime Video, which has achieved some local hits like The Family Man,...

Amazon Doubles Down on India Streaming Wars With Two-Platform Strategy
Image
Amazon is playing a dual-platform game in India’s competitive streaming landscape, with Prime Video targeting subscription-ready consumers while its ad-supported Amazon Mx Player courts viewers transitioning from traditional TV.

Speaking at the Apos conference in Indonesia, Amazon executives outlined their strategy for serving India’s diverse streaming audience through two distinct services. Gaurav Gandhi, VP of Asia Pacific and Mena for Prime Video, explained the rationale behind the approach.

“India is a really heterogeneous and diverse country with customers having very different needs,” Gandhi said during the panel discussion moderated by Vivek Couto of Media Partners Asia, which organizes Apos. “Prime Video caters to customers who are subscription-ready, who have actually transitioned to streaming as their first choice or the only choice of entertainment. While Amazon Mx Player is aimed at customers who are now transitioning from traditional media — TV or are still on it, but are not subscription-ready yet,...

This Day That Year: Revisiting Gangs Of Wasseypur
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur, which released in 2012, in another fabulous installment of tThis day That Year. Also included is exclusive comments from Manoj Bajpayee about his brilliant turn as Sardar Khan and experience working on the drama.

Bleeding brilliance in almost every frame, breathing fire through every available orifice that the characters possess, and whipping up a kind of frenzied flamboyant bloodshed that was once associated with the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah, Gangs Of Wasseypur is, briefly, one huge gang-bang. No protection provided. From its bludgeoning opening when merciless marauders ambush a powerful enemy’s fortress-like home with army-like meticulousness Gangs Of Wasseypur takes us into a world where compassion is a dinosaur, forgiveness a faux pas, and kindness an unforgivable sin.

Welcome to Kashyap’s Wasseypur. This is no country for the weak-hearted. Country-made guns go off without warning,...

This Day That Year: Kabir Singh @ 6, Still Unbearably Toxic
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits and re-examines Kabir Singh, which starred Shahid Kapoor, six years later in a This Day That Year feature.

When Kabir Singh was released on June 21, 2019, I didn’t realize there could be anything deadlier than Covid-19. How could I? Covid was a good right months away. Regrettably, I praised the film for its gumption and audacity for daring to show its protagonist as a sodden, drugged, zonked out, chauvinistic, sexist pig who doesn’t think before slapping his girlfriend for defending her father, whom Kabir Singh (nee Arjun Reddy) had just insulted.

Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh comes from a place of complete toxicity. He does exactly what he wants, including performing a life-saving surgery in an inebriated condition, predictably killing the patient. This man should have been barred from not just the Medical Association but from being part of any cinematic narrative and discussion.

Yet,...

Can Hope Survive Between Two Indias? Karan Tejpal’s ‘Stolen’ Brilliantly Attempts To Find Out
Image
Karan Tejpal’s “Stolen” (2025), backed by Anurag Kashyap, Gaurav Dhingra, Kiran Rao, Nikhil Advani, and Vikramaditya Motwane, is a scintillating look into what Vir Das has popularised as ‘Two Indias’.

As I watched the end credits of “Stolen” roll, I screamed internally, ‘This is one of the most important films made about the current state of our country in the last decade.’ This also shows that in the last decade, how sorry has been the state of Bollywood that you cannot recall any other Bollywood film that exposes the horrors of fake news apart from Sudhir Mishra’s “Afwaah” (2023). The other Bollywood movie that comes in close comparison to “Stolen” is “Nh-10” (2015); coincidentally, released exactly a decade ago.

But “Nh-10” or “Afwaah” were good films trying to fit into the Bollywood template. “Stolen” does not do that. Yet, while watching “Stolen,” I said to myself, This can’t happen. People are not so good.

Subhash K Jha Revisits Bejoy Nambiar’s 2011 Shaitan
Image
It has been 14 years since Bejoy Nambiar’s Shaitan hit the big screen. Subhash K Jha looks back at the drama and talks with the director about making the film.

In Bejoy Nambiar’ Shaitan, the skilful interweavement of strong storytelling and powerful performances(where do all these talented youngsters come from?!) is underpinned by a wild sense of humour that shows up at the oddest of places to remind us that cinema is not about following all the punctuation rules of storytelling. It’s about knowing when and where to revv up the drama to just that right pitch of crescendo to carry us into a tripped-out world of hedonism and redemption.

This stunning tale of five misguided youngsters from the uppercrust displays a flair for unleashing an energy that leaves us breathless with anticipation. It’s tough to keep up with the film’s unbridled zest for momentum. From...

Mob Cops Review: All Exposition, No Execution
Image
The American mob movie, much like the gangster sagas of Bollywood, operates on a globally understood grammar of loyalty, betrayal, and violence. Mob Cops enters this arena with a potent, fact-based premise: two decorated New York City detectives, Leo Benetti and Sammy Canzano, leading double lives as paid enforcers for the Mafia.

Their world of corruption is investigated by another detective, Tim Delgado, whose inquiry is sparked by the persistent pleas of a grieving mother. This setup promises a gritty exploration of institutional decay, a theme that resonates from Hollywood crime thrillers to the parallel cinema of India. Yet, despite its promising foundation drawn from real events, the film’s execution falters, leaving its potential largely unrealized.

A Story Told, Not Shown

A film’s narrative structure is its skeleton, and here, the bones are deeply fractured. The movie forsakes the powerful cinematic principle of showing for the much weaker method of telling.

Anurag Kashyap Slams Netflix’s Ted Sarandos as ‘Definition of Dumb’ Over ‘Sacred Games’ Comments
Image
Indian filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has launched an attack on Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos, calling him “the definition of dumb” and criticizing the streaming giant’s early India strategy around shows like “Sacred Games.”

Bowing in 2018, the neo-noir “Sacred Games,” directed by Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, is Netflix’s first Indian original series.

Sarandos appeared on Nikhil Kamath’s “People by Wtf” podcast during his recent visit to India. During the conversation, Sarandos reflected on Netflix’s early India strategy, particularly around the launch of “Sacred Games.” “I thought this is going to be great. People in India love movies. This is a TV show that feels as big as a movie. Has movie stars.” he said. “What was interesting about it is, like, it was very, very novel, but I didn’t realize that we were going to be, like, introducing a brand new kind of entertainment to a country the size of India,...

Revisiting Raj Kumar Gupta’s Aamir As It Clocks 17 Years
Image
Raj Kumar Gupta’s Aamir, released on June 6 , 2008 could have easily slipped into being a heavy-handed polemical study of the isolation and persecution of the Indian Muslim and his constant battle to remain part of the mainstream even as he’s provoked and instigated from both ends to keel over and surrender to the forces of chaos, anarchy and annihilation. Ironically, a work of art like Aamir embraces the chaos to create a universe that is, in a strange way, the opposite of destruction.

Persistently, Aamir repeatedly invokes images of ominous doom as we see the protagonist wind his way through a dreadful day that would end in abject tragedy. This is by far one of the finest attempts in recent times to explore the psyche of a modern ‘foreign-returned’ Indian as he’s plunged headlong into the Kafkaesque nightmare of crime, grime, extremism, and fanaticism in the underbelly of the big,...

Stolen: Is Abhishek Banerjee’s Thriller Based On A True Story? Here’s What We Know
Image
Is Stolen Based On Real Events(Photo Credit –Prime Video)

Abhishek Banerjee’s film Stolen garnered widespread attention after its debut on Amazon Prime Video. The film also sparked discussion over its powerful narrative, skilled cast, and meaningful social commentary. People who have seen the film or its preview are searching for confirmation about its connection to actual events. The movie Stolen accurately portrays an actual horrific event that took place in Assam in 2018.

The 2018 Karbi Anglong Lynching Case

The film Stolen draws its inspiration from the actual Karbi Anglong lynching event, which occurred in 2018. Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath were moving through the Karbi Anglong district in Assam. A false message spread through WhatsApp, which claimed that child abductors were operating in the region. This created ultimate panic and fear in the villagers.

Believing the false information, the villagers attacked Neelotpal and Abhijit. Although both pleaded for their lives and explained their innocence,...
