Vijay’s Final Acting Bow ‘Jana Nayagan’ Sets 2026 Release Date (Exclusive)
Image
Tamil-language cinema superstar Vijay’s highly anticipated cinematic farewell, “Jana Nayagan,” has officially locked its global theatrical release for Jan. 9, 2026, positioning the film for a dominant run during the lucrative Makar Sankranti and Pongal holiday corridor.

Directed by H. Vinoth and produced by Kvn Productions, “Jana Nayagan” (which translates to “The People’s Leader”) marks a significant milestone as Vijay’s final on-screen appearance before his previously announced retirement from acting in order to join politics. The strategic release date places the film just days ahead of the Pongal festival, historically a lucrative period for Tamil cinema.

The timing appears calculated to maximize box office potential, with the film benefiting from a five-day festive weekend and the massive draw of Vijay’s farewell performance.

The actor has previously dominated this holiday window with several hits throughout his career. It began with the 2007 breakout “Pokkiri” and 2011’s “Kaavalan.” In 2014’s “Jilla...

B-Town: Stars are a good bet for elections
Image
Mumbai, March 31 (Ians) It is election time and in this season political parties develop an extra interest in film stars. On their part, stars reciprocate. The choice is not automatic and there are factors that qualify them as probables.

Films and politics have been poles apart and the use politicians had for film stars was to present them at political rallies in order to attract crowds. While mainstream parties were yet to familiarise themselves with this process of using film stars for campaigning, it mostly happened at the local level.

In Mumbai, some party candidates were bound to know an actor or somebody who did. Politicians in other cities used cash, contacts or favours.

In the old days in Uttar Pradesh, for instance, a star was repaid by exempting his films from entertainment tax. Taxes then were not standardised as they are today. The entertainment tax, being a state subject,...

The veteran Dmk leader had once in an interview said that he used to promote rationalism and equality in his movies and he shunned larger than life images of his characters.

He had said that his characters were generally people from humble backgrounds and lived a tough life. The stories written by Kalaignar generally had an impact on ordinary men and women and they loved Karunanidhi as a messiah to remove their worries and difficulties.
