“What about me, Matthew? We were going to be friends. Remember?”
Rape revenge films have always been controversial. Roger Ebert famously called the genre-defining I Spit on Your Grave “a vile bag of garbage” in response to its extended scenes of brutal rape. But fans of the genre—including many survivors of sexual assault—find catharsis and empowerment in films that treat rape as a serious act worthy of avenging.
With graphic attacks that account for nearly ⅓ of the run-time, Meir Zarchi’s 1978 film is definitely not an easy watch, but should it be? And doesn’t this discomfort merely point a daming finger back at a society that views female justice as a transgressive act?
Jennifer Hills (Camille Keaton) is a short story author working on her first novel. She’s rented a country house on an idyllic river hoping to find the peace and quiet she needs to write.

It's curious to wonder how Camille Keaton's career might have progressed if she got the part in Franco Zeffirelli's film she originally intended to audition for in Italy. She didn't get that role, but drew the attention of another Italian director, Massimo Dallamano, and thus, got a small but pivotal part and made her cinematic debut in his Giallo mystery film, What Have You Done to Solange? This 1972 movie would lead Keaton to a major role in her filmography — a lead in the cult rape-revenge film, I Spit On Your Grave (1978). Keaton's body of work aside, Dallamano's movie is quite remarkable on its own too. Even among the rich and versatile tradition of Giallo, the film stands out as one exploring pretty daring ideas for its time andbeing a precursor to contemporary horror films about womanhood.

The gap between horror fans and critics has closed over the years. While the advent of online discourse has allowed the fandom to make its voice heard and create tailored spaces for their interests, this has not always been the case. Historically, horror was a genre that was often shunned by critics, which you can still see in the continued snubbing of the genre at the Emmys and Oscars. When the only outlet for film criticism was the press, horror would often get the short end of the stick, mainly if the content was considered shocking and without artistic merit.
Yet, in the words of gothabilly pioneer and exploitation/horror film fan Lux Interior from The Cramps, "I don't know about art, but I know what I like." Horror has always been a genre that excels despite critical reception because of the passion of the fans; critics be damned. If...

The religious horror movie Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney and directed by Michael Mohan, wears its horror influences on its sleeves. Neon’s new horror movie is now available on Digital and PVOD, making it easier to catch up with the buzzy title. If you’ve already seen Immaculate, this companion watch guide highlights horror movies to pair with it.
Sweeney stars in Immaculate as Cecilia, a woman of devout faith who is offered a fulfilling new role at an illustrious Italian convent. Cecilia’s warm welcome to the picture-perfect Italian countryside gets derailed soon enough when she discovers she’s become pregnant and realizes the convent harbors disturbing secrets.
From Will Bates’ gothic score to the filming locations and even shot compositions, Immaculate owes a lot to its cinematic influences. Mohan pulls from more than just religious horror, though. While Immaculate pays tribute to the classics, the horror movie surprises...

For decades, viewers have been split on writer/director Meir Zarchi’s 1978 film I Spit on Your Grave (watch it Here). Some write it off as reprehensible trash. Some – including legendary drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs – think it’s a worthwhile revenge thriller. The film has developed a cult following, and now the folks at Printed in Blood, a publisher of art books, have announced that they’ll be celebrating the 45th anniversary of I Spit on Your Grave by releasing a collector’s edition I Spit on Your Grave Scriptbook!
Also known as Day of the Woman, I Spit on Your Grave stars Camille Keaton as a young woman who is brutally attacked and left for dead by a group of men. She then sets out to exact revenge on her attackers. Zarchi has said he was inspired to make the movie after helping a woman who had...

Years ago, a friend once asked me what a large whisk broom that I was holding was for. The response was something to the effect of ‘What do you think it’s for?’ Certain things are obvious even if some people refuse to see what is happening around them, even in film. The Texas-made film Those Who Call (2023) is one of those works on the screen that show the obvious not with style or flair.
The picture is helmed by Cuban-born Writer/Director Anubys Lopez with a cast of Latino leads in the person of Yetlanezi Rodriguez (Sandra) and Angie Sandoval (Ana). The film opens with a prologue that many in the genre have seen before and for some reason, filmmakers continue to mine ever since Camille Keaton went on a fateful drive to Connecticut in I Spit On Your Grave (1978) that is the solitary woman who runs into vehicle...

Once in a while, an R-rated movie is an experience that we're not sure we're meant to enjoy. Not like the taboo excitement of true crime, or the cathartic pain that comes with some documentaries. More like a feeling that we're not sure about who the intended audience is for this film ... and, dear God, are we that audience? We're watching something that skates off the edge of good taste, and just maybe, we're enjoying it.
It's an artistic conundrum that's fueled decades of controversy and censorship, from the famous "I know obscenity when I see it" Supreme Court trial to the U.K.'s all-too-familiar-today right wing conservative dalliance in the '80s with cleansing the landscape of the "video nasty." They're films from the famous to the infamous, movies that revel in pushing the boundaries. Sometimes there's a thoughtful message underneath the morass.

Aptly named for the acidic smell of deteriorating film, Vinegar Syndrome made an auspicious debut in 2013 with its inaugural release, The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis. In the decade since, they have unearthed, restored, and distributed hundreds of cult, exploitation, horror, action, and adult films.
Popping in a new Vinegar Syndrome disc is a bit like cinematic Russian roulette. It’s always interesting, but you never know if you’re going to get an obscure masterpiece, a campy B-movie, a so-bad-it’s-good slice of fun, or a dud. The unknown is half the fun, and discovering those diamonds in the rough makes it worthwhile.
In celebration of their anniversary, I’m highlighting 10 hidden gems from Vinegar Syndrome’s first 10 years.
To narrow the choices, I’m ignoring the heavy hitters like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 and The Amityville Horror, box sets like Forgotten Gialli and Home Grown Horrors,...

For the first official week of horror and sci-fi home media releases in the month of April, we don’t have a ton of titles coming out, but the ones that are being released on April 5th are a pretty damn good bunch of movies all the same. Probably the biggest movie arriving on multiple formats this Tuesday is Scream (2022) from the Radio Silence crew, so if you missed it in theaters, now is the perfect opportunity to be able to catch up with everything that happened in Woodsboro.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for April 5th include a 4K edition of I Spit on Your Grave (1978), The Long Night, Vicious Fun, The Ice Demon, a 2-Movie Scream collection, and 60 Seconds to Live!

I Spit On Your Grave, one of the most notorious films of the '70s exploitation boom, has just been re-released in a deluxe Box Set from indie distributor, RoninFlix, and it's a thing of shocking beauty. Initially released in 1978 to scathing reviews, I Spit On Your Grave is the brainchild of writer/director Meir Zarchi, an Israeli immigrant who had no intention of making an exploitation film, but nonetheless succeeded in creating a piece of history with his seminal rape-revenge masterpiece. A young writer, Jennifer Hills, leaves the hustle and bustle of the city to a secluded lakeside home to complete her first novel in solitude. Initially infatuated with her idyllic surroundings, Jennifer's dreamy isolation soon gives...

It’s not hard to underestimate how much of an impact the original I Spit on Your Grave film had on the genre – mainly thanks to the controversial way the film was marketed back in the late 70s/early 80s and its subsequent banning across several territories. Yet despite all the furore around the film, it never spawned a sequel – after all that was not de rigueur back then, especially with indie productions – but it did inspire the film Savage Vengeance, from cult director Donald Farmer: an unofficial sequel that starred actress Camille Keaton, under a pseudonym, playing yet another “Jennifer” without ever explicitly stating is was a follow-up to Zarchi’s original.

The first trailer for I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu has finally arrived. The long-awaited sequel ignores the recent remakes and is instead a true sequel to the original 1978 movie, I Spit on Your Grave. The original movie is often called one of the worst movies ever made, which has led to an extreme cult status in the 40 years since its release. The sequel was actually finished in 2015, but there has been a 4-year hold up, which makes the trailer release such a big deal.
I Spit on Your Grave Deja Vu brings back original actress Camille Keaton, reprising her role as Jennifer Hills with original director Meir Zarchi. Hills was gang raped and left for dead in a notoriously lengthy scene from the first movie, which saw her exact her revenge on her abusers. 40 years later, Hills is a successful writer who ends up having to go back to where her nightmare began,...

Better late than never, right?
The iconic and hugely controversial horror film, I Spit On Your Grave, is getting an official sequel, which will act as a direct follow-up to the 1978 original. Titled I Spit On Your Grave: Deja Vu, it will completely ignore the 2010 remake and the two sequels that followed that. Instead, it’ll see actress Camille Keaton, who played writer Jennifer Hills in the classic flick, return to the role after four decades, along with director Meir Zarchi back at the helm.
As far as plot details are concerned, Jennifer has become a successful author and lives with her daughter Christy, who’s a model. It’s not long though before her past comes back to haunt them, as the relatives of the men Jennifer killed in I Spit On Your Grave set out for revenge and kidnap both women. Cue the deja vu.

This weekend I went to the Son of Monsterpalooza horror convention and attended a panel for a new horror movie coming out called Death House, and this movie looks absolutely insane!
The movie was directed by B. Harrison Smith, who says that he made Death House as a way to help reinvigorate the horror genre. He's an ambitious guy who hopes the film will be a cultural timepiece for the genre. The team behind the film didn't set out to make a cheap-ass horror film for the sake of making a cheap-ass horror film. They wanted to make something great, something that hardcore horror fans would respect and appreciate. The movie is also packed full of horror movie Easter eggs.
Dee Wallace (E.T., Cujo, The Hollowing) is one of the film's stars, and she says that Death House is one of the most unique horror film projects that she's ever been a part of.

Last year Bruce Campbell talked about an idea for a horror movie that he described as The Expendables of horror films — a film that would bring together a ton of classic horror stars together in one movie. It was a great idea that got horror fans really excited and is now being brought to life. Unfortunately, it’s not coming from Bruce Campbell.
The movie is being directed by B. Harrison Smith, who has made a few movies that I’ve never heard of like Camp Dread and Zombie Killers: Elephant Graveyard. The script for the film was written by the late Gunnar Hansen, who is best known for playing Leatherface in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films.
The cast of the movie is pretty impressive and includes Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), Bill Moseley (House of a 1000 Corpses), Michael Berryman...

A new horror film will unite all of the icons of the genre in one epic, bloody fight for survival, similar to the lassoing in of action legends in The Expendables franchise. Dubbed Death House, the movie will focus on the “Area 51 of evil,” where a government facility holds all of humanity’s worst death-dealers underground.
Who are they? You’ll probably recognize a bunch of icons from movies like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Re-Animator: Robert Englund, Danny Trejo, Michael Berryman, Kane Hodder, Dee Wallace, Bill Moseley, Barbara Crampton, Doug Bradley, Ken Foree, Camille Keaton and Don Shanks, among others.
Gunnar Hansen, the face of Leatherface in the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, was set to be in the film before he passed away last November from pancreatic cancer. Hansen wrote the script for the film before he died, while Harrison Smith is set to direct the mayhem.

When The Expendables hit theaters back in 2010, it assembled a cast of some of the biggest action stars around, lead by Sylvester Stallone. Since then, there have been attempts to re-create this formula in other ways, such as an all-female version known as ExpendaBelles, and the Fast & Furious franchise's cast only keeps getting bigger and bigger after The Expendables came out. Now it seems that the horror genre is getting its own version of The Expendables with a new movie entitled Death House, which features a murderer's row of genre legends, according to iHorror.
The cast includes horror icons that any genre fan will be familiar with, such as Robert Englund, Danny Trejo, Michael Berryman, Kane Hodder, Dee Wallace, Bill Moseley, Barbara Crampton, Doug Bradley, Ken Foree, Camille Keaton and Don Shanks. Massimo Dallamano may be best known to some as the cinematographer of Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965), credited under the pseudonym Jack Dalmas. Following his collaborations with Leone, Dallamano would only serve as cinematographer twice more (his last credit being French director Michel Deville’s 1966 comedy The Mona Lisa Has Been Stolen starring George Chakiris and Marina Vlady). The explosive popularity of the spaghetti western would allow Dallamano to begin his own career as a director, with 1967 debut Bandidos (credited under another pseudonym, Max Dillman), but he’d soon after turn to the bread and butter of more exploitative genre fare. The director of eleven features, up until his death in 1976, Dallamano’s enduring, fascinating masterpiece stands as the 1972 title What Have You Done to Solange? Credited as a giallo staple, Dallamano’s film is more of a hybrid of subgenres, a mixed giallo and poliziotteschi film.

Movies that are described as “giallo” normally tend to depend on certain hallmarks, with the black-gloved killer killing their victims with a sharp knife. We as the audience follow the detective on their mission to hunt down this killer, with the inevitable big shocking finale. With What Have You Done To Solange? we get a film that does stick to these tropes quite heavily, but also subverts this very expectation to make the movie more memorable than most other films of this type.

December 15th is definitely a great day to be a cult film fan as we’ve got a bunch of stellar titles making their home entertainment bows this week. Scream Factory is releasing several films on Blu this Tuesday—The Car, Zombie High and the double feature of The Dungeonmaster and Eliminators—and Arrow Video is keeping busy as well with their special editions of both Blood Rage and What Have You Done to Solange?
Other notable titles include The Last Horror Film, Count Dracula, The Toxic Avenger Collection, a double feature of Axe and Kidnapped Coed as well as the most recent iteration of Fantastic Four.
The Car (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
The peaceful tranquility of a small Western town is disturbed when a murderous car wreaks havoc by viciously mowing down innocent victims. The new sheriff, Wade Parent (James Brolin), may be the only one who can stop this menace in its tracks.

Severin Films make their return to the UK home video market with the Blu-ray release of two Jess Franco films in their library, She Killed in Ecstasy and Vampyros Lesbos – erotically charged Euro-horrors starring Franco fave Soledad Miranda which mark the pinnacle of Franco’s career. The former, a revenge thriller, is considered the best of the 200-odd films the Spanish auteur has made, whilst the latter is a crowd-pleasing slice of sleaze (who doesn’t love lesbian vampires) that is also an oddly-faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula.
She Killed In Ecstasy
Stars: Soledad Miranda, Fred Williams, Paul Muller, Howard Vernon, Ewa Strömberg, Horst Tappert | Written and Directed by Jess Franco
She Killed In Ecstasy tells the story of Mrs. Johnson (Miranda), the widow of a young doctor (Williams) who kills himself after a medical committee terminates his research into human embryos, considering it too inhumane.
