Apple TV+ renews hit golf comedy for season 2
Image
It looks like fans of golf and comedy are in for happy news with Apple TV+’s Stick series!

Apple TV+ is an interesting streamer as it has a lot more A-list talent involved, mostly in comedies. The show has had its hits, like Ted Lasso, even with other series that slip under the radar a bit. Among them is Stick.

Premiering in June 2025, Stick stars Owen Wilson as Pryce Cahill, a former top golfer until a public meltdown after losing a tournament ruined his career and his life. Two decades later, Pryce is working at an Indiana sports store when he spots Santi (Peter Dager), a promising teenage golfer. Pryce takes Santi under his wing to try and make him a star while recapturing his own past glory.

The series got good reviews and a first-season finale that wrapped up the main storyline but paved the way for a possible second season.

‘Stick’ Soundtrack: All The Songs You’ll Hear In The Apple TV+ Golf Series
Image
Stick tells the story of optimistic ex-professional golfer Pryce Cahill (Owen Wilson), who might be good friends with one Ted Lasso if they ever overlapped in their sports worlds.

Hailing from creator Jason Keller, the Apple TV+ series premiered early June with the first three episodes, watching Pryce reluctantly let his ex-wife Amber Linn (Judy Greer) sell their former house before he decides to bet on teen Santiago Wheeler, who has the swing of a golf pro, and take him to the big leagues along with his former caddy and friend Mitts (Marc Maron) and Santi’s mother Elena (Mariana Treviño).

Needle drops support Pryce’s positive thinking throughout the show, though there are more serious moments too. The opening credits song is performed by the band Caamp. Find the full soundtrack of Apple’s Stick below:

‘Stick’ Creator Jason Keller Talks “Natural” Introduction Of Clark Ross, Facing The Past And Season 2 Hopes For Apple TV+ Show
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post lightly spoils the final episodes of Stick on Apple TV+.

The first season of Apple TV+’s Stick has come to an end with its finale episode, titled “Déjà Vu All Over Again.”

Owen Wilson’s Pryce Cahill and Peter Dager’s Santi Wheeler faced their respective demons on and off the golf course. For Pryce, it’s Timothy Olyphant’s Clark Ross who brings the rest of his backstory to the forefront, and Santi’s dad Gary Wheeler (Mackenzie Astin), shows up in the final two episodes of the series.

“Bringing Clark Ross back into Pryce’s life was always just a natural thing we wanted to do, because he was there for this meltdown at Sawgrass and so it’s fun to see all of these characters coming face to face with the things that they’re running from and being forced to deal with it,...

Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso Replacement Tops the Global Streaming Charts After Timothy Olyphant Stole the Show in the Newest Episode
Image
When Stick first came out, people were quick to write it off. It seemed a little too close to Ted Lasso for some people's tastes - it was, after all, a story about a man with a terrible tragedy in his past coaching someone at a popular sport. But gradually, Stick became its own thing - and won a lot of fans.

The most recent episode saw the arrival of Timothy Olyphant's character Clark Ross, a character who'd only been seen on in-show TV screens up to that point. He's the golfing rival of main character Pryce Cahill (Owen Wilson) and he's a smug, arrogant antagonist. Cbr was able to unveil a sneak peek clip from their tense meeting ahead of the latest episode's premiere.

According to data from the website FlixPatrol, Stick is really standing out from the AppleTV crowd right now. On July 10, it established itself as...

Owen Wilson & Timothy Olyphant Finally Face Off in Tense Clip From Apple TV+'s Stick (Exclusive)
Image
Following its debut on Apple TV+ in June, Stick is fast approaching its freshman season finale. Three episodes remain with the next, "Clark the Mark," set to drop on the streaming platform on July 9.

Ahead of the episode's premiere, Cbr has an exclusive sneak peek clip to premiere. In the video, Owen Wilson's Pryce Cahill attempts to focus on his swing as he is chastised as a "loser" and a "degenerate" by Timothy Olyphant's Clark Ross, his rival and former playing partner. However, though Clark was getting very personal with his verbal jabs, Pryce clapped back with a burn of his own. The clip can be watched below.

The show, per the official synopsis, is a "heartfelt, feel-good comedy about a found family and their relationships set within the world of golf as it has never been shown before. Owen Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, an over-the-hill, ex-pro...

After ‘Stick’ Episode 7, I Can Confirm the Show Only Survives Because of One Reason
Image
After Episode 7, it’s impossible to deny it anymore, The Stick only works because of Pryce Cahill. Without Owen Wilson’s grounded and quietly compelling performance, the entire show would lose its swing. Apple TV+’s latest attempt at a feel-good sports comedy tries to mix redemption, mentorship, and second chances, but the result feels like it’s missing its core except when Pryce is on screen.

Created by Jason Keller, The Stick follows a fallen golf pro who tries to reclaim his sense of purpose by coaching a troubled teenage prodigy. It was clearly pitched as the next Ted Lasso, full of emotional growth and heartwarming highs. But while Lasso gave us layered characters and moments that stuck, The Stick too often feels like it’s playing catch-up. “He’s a beautiful loser,” Keller said of Pryce in an interview, and that might be the only part of the series that truly lands.

Watch Christian Bale’s 92% Rotten Tomatoes Oscar-Winning Period Drama Before It Leaves Streaming Soon

The last few years have been relatively quiet for Christian Bale, the Oscar-winning actor who was last seen in live-action in 2022’s The Pale Blue Eye. However, one of the highest-rated movies in his filmography just got a disappointing streaming update. Bale stars alongside Matt Damon and Jon Bernthal in Ford v Ferrari, the racing biopic following Carroll Shelby (Damon) and Ken Miles (Bale) as they work to build a revolutionary car for Ford with the hopes of defeating Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966. Ford v Ferrari is currently streaming on Prime Video, but the streamer has confirmed that it will depart that platform at the end of this month, meaning the final day to watch the film is June 30. It earned a 92% from critics and 98% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Golfers Say Owen Wilson’s Apple TV+ Series ‘Stick’ Is Sub-Par
Image
Ted Lasso makes it look easy, but it is extraordinarily hard to make a really good TV show that is ostensibly about sports. Hell, it’s challenging enough just to make a really good TV show — satisfying the obsessive fandom that comes with sports only complicates the mission further. Wanna up the difficulty level to 11? Pick golf as the sport you’re going to dramatize — or in this case, cometize (comedtize?).

For a good decade and a half, Caddyshack (1980) was the definitive golf comedy, even though the golf parts are its worst parts. Sixteen years later, within six months of each another, a pair of golf films came for that crown: Tin Cup, a rom-com that goes for golf realism starring the athletic Kevin Costner, and Happy Gilmore, a cartoonish comedy starring the athletic-enough-for-backlot-basketball Adam Sandler. It is reasonable to rank those three golf comedies in any order you’d...

Apple TV+'s Wonderful New Sports Show Channels A Kevin Costner Classic
Image
There's a bittersweet yet feel-good vibe in "Stick" — Apple TV+'s new underdog sports dramedy (which follows in the footsteps of "Ted Lasso") — that's sneakily endearing. On the surface, Jason Keller's show is shuffling variations of clichés ripped from classic sports films and new wave TV comedies (like jokes that draw on the divide between Gen Z and Gen X), but underneath its fairly predictable formula, there's a genuinely charming heart that caught me off-guard.

The setup is pretty simple: Pryce Cahill, a once-promising pro golfer turned golf club salesman, is broke and in the middle of a divorce with a pretty grim financial outlook toward his future. Strongly related to his money problems, he'll likely lose the home filled with memories and golf memorabilia he currently lives in. But one day, while out and about on a driving range teaching an old lady, the spark of hope for...

Steaming on: Apple TV+

Episodes viewed: 10 of 10

You have to feel a bit sorry for Stick, or indeed any vaguely sports-related comedy drama that dares show its face on Apple TV+: the comparisons to Ted Lasso are going to be inevitable. In fact, this golf-based feel-goodery has as much in common with Apple’s other hit comedy-drama, the therapy-based Shrinking. It follows the tone and feel of both of those shows: a lovable but broken hero, grappling with grief and a failed marriage, who ultimately finds emotional salvation in a found family.

Stick comes from Jason Keller, whose previous sporting life includes a co-writing credit for Ford V. Ferrari. Here, Owen Wilson is our putting protagonist, in a role that feels custom-made for him, given free rein to take his Texan charm into turbodrive. His Pryce ‘Stick’ Cahill is a classic Wilsonian hero, a fast-talker and eternal hustler with...

After killing it with the hit series Ted Lasso, Apple TV+ is back at it again with a new sports drama. Starring Owen Wilson and created by Jason Keller, the screenwriter for Ford vs Ferrari, Stick is a story that revolves around golf, redemption, and mentorship.

Wilson plays Pryce “Stick” Cahill, a former golf prodigy whose life spiraled after a public meltdown during a tournament. He goes from a sales rep at a sporting goods store to coaching Santi Wheeler (Peter Dager), a promising young golfer.

The series premiered on Apple TV+ on June 4, with the first three episodes released together. And while it’s too soon to say if Stick will earn Ted Lasso-level devotion, it’s off to a strong start. ‘Stick’ Star Owen Wilson And Creator Jason Keller On Show’s Exploration Of Mentorship And Found Family: “There Isn’t A Foolproof Guidebook To Bring Out The Best In Someone”
Image
Spoiler Alert: This piece discusses the first three episodes of Stick on Apple TV+.

Owen Wilson’s latest project, the Apple TV+ series Stick, watches the actor take on a plucky underdog of sorts — Pryce Cahill — a former professional golfer whose divorce is about to be finalized in the sale of the house he once shared with his ex wife Amber-Linn (Judy Greer).

Now working as a golf club salesman, it’s obvious from the pitch he makes in the opening moments of the series that he still loves the sport of golf. It’s this “positive” energy and that allows Pryce, who stumbles upon golf phenom Santiago Wheeler (Peter Dager) to convince the teenager to take his talents on the road and compete to become a pro golfer. A surrogate father and son relationship develops between the pair, but not without its bumps in the road as Santi sometimes...

‘Stick’ Review: Owen Wilson’s Golf Comedy Takes Too Many Shortcuts Trying to Be ‘Ted Lasso’
Image
Not all heartwarming sports comedies have to be compared to “Ted Lasso” — the genre did exist before Jason Sudeikis‘ merry, mustachioed mentor professed “fútbol is life” — but “Stick’s” attempts to replicate the formula are impossible to ignore. There’s the middle-aged coach who’s out of his depth, taking an all-or-nothing shot on an unlikely star. There’s the quick formation of a support team, the lingering family-related trauma, and the big, meaningful monologues. All the while, a tear-tugging soundtrack of white acoustic-rock underscores a redemption story found on the field but realized off it.

Part of the magic of “Ted Lasso” comes from seeing a college football coach from Kansas prove his doubters wrong by turning his perceived weaknesses into irrefutable strengths. But Jason Keller’s Apple TV+ series can’t pull off the same enchantment. The weaknesses of its coach, Pryce Cahill (Owen Wilson), are just that...

Owen Wilson’s Apple TV+ show Stick would have made a great movie in 2005
Image
These days, streaming services are overrun with content. There are pretty much hundreds of new shows released each month, and it's impossible to keep up with all of them. Our watch lists have become stocked with limited series that can often leave us thinking, "Well, that could have been a movie." It's reminiscent of the phrase, "This meeting could have been an email."

While some shows should have been movies instead, there are other shows that perfectly capture the essence of a movie. That's how I felt watching Stick, the new Apple TV+ comedy series starring Owen Wilson that premiered on June 4. By all accounts, this could have been an excellent sports comedy in the mid-aughts.

In the series, Wilson plays fallen professional golfer Pryce Cahill. Following a dramatic ending to his career that included a public breakdown on the green, he's working at a golf supply store and driving a beat-up yellow Corvette.

‘Stick’ Review: Owen Wilson’s Endearing Apple TV+ Golf Comedy Is Ideal Summer Comfort Viewing
Image
Stick, Apple TV+’s new golf comedy starring Owen Wilson, does not come with the tagline “For fans of Shrinking and Ted Lasso.” It doesn’t need to: Between the cuddly yet poignant mood, the found-family ensemble, the focus on flawed but generally non-toxic male role models and the overall Dad TV vibe, there’s no mistaking who its target audience is meant to be.

But familiarity isn’t necessarily a drawback when it comes to comfort viewing, and certainly not for a rookie that can play the game nearly as well as the old pros. While not, at this point, quite as ambitious as its actual tagline (“Take a big swing”) might suggest, its assured tone, fat-free storytelling and, most especially, winning cast could give Stick everything it needs to develop into the platform’s next big crowd-pleaser.

As mandated by formula, Jason Keller’s series centers on a...

The new series premieres on June 4 and continues with weekly episodes that you won't want to miss. We'll tell you when each episode drops!

‘Stick’: Apple’s Golf Comedy Scores on the Charms of Owen Wilson
Image
The trailer for Apple’s new comedy series Stick isn’t subtle in making its pitch to potential viewers. Mixed in among various glimpses of Owen Wilson playing washed-up former pro golfer Pryce Cahill is a title card that reads, “From the home of Ted Lasso.”

No one involved in the making of Apple’s biggest comedy hit has anything to do with Stick, which was created by Ford v. Ferrari screenwriter Jason Keller. But with its combination of sports, uplift, and a fast-talking, self-deprecating, middle-aged white-guy hero who tries...

Stick TV Review: Owen Wilson led golf series is a fun sports story
Image
Plot: Pryce Cahill is an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was prematurely derailed 20 years ago. After the collapse of his marriage and getting fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store, Pryce hedges his bets and future entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom named Santi. This heartfelt, feel-good comedy is about a found family and their relationships set within the world of golf as it has never been shown before.

Review: The last time Owen Wilson played a veteran athlete training the next generation superstar in his sport was in 2017’s Cars 3. At 56, Wilson has played all sorts of characters across genres while seemingly never aging, but has never starred in a live-action sports story. With Stick, Wilson gives us one of the best performances of his career in a feel-good story about golf, family, friendship, and second chances. Golf is a great sport to feature on screen,...

Owen Wilson’s New ‘Ted Lasso’-Like Golf Comedy Debuts With Hazardous Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
The first three episodes of Owen Wilson’s new Apple TV+ comedy are set to debut on the platform this Wednesday, and everyone is curious to see just how Stick will stack up to the other projects in Wilson’s filmography. Stick follows an ex-golfer who finds new hope in coaching a troubled teen towards success. After he’s fired from his job and his wife leaves him, he stakes his future on his ability to coach his prodigy to success. The review embargo for Stick lifted on Friday, and although the show is drawing comparisons to Ted Lasso, that didn’t help it earn a good score. Stick debuted with a “rotten” 40% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. This comes from only five reviews, so it is subject to change.

In addition to Owen Wilson, Stick also stars Judy Greer and Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Greer...

Apple TV+ Missed an Opportunity to Promote Its Next Show With ‘Ted Lasso’ Potential
Image
Created by Jason Keller, Apple TV+’s upcoming sports comedy series, Stick, is led by Owen Wilson, who plays the role of a former professional golfer. The show is set to premiere on 4th June 2025, and upon release of its trailer, it was instantly compared to Jason Sudeikis’s Ted Lasso.

Ted Lasso is one of the most-watched sports-comedy series and one of the most popular shows on Apple TV+. Following the same genre as Ted Lasso, fans believed that Stick might get the same hype and popularity ahead of its premiere, but it turns out a lot of people don’t even know about Stick. It’s world premiere was held recently at the AMC Century City, LA.

AppleTV+ Thinks You Love ‘Ted Lasso,’ So Meet Owen Wilson’s ‘Ted Golfo’
Image
In times past, the multicam sitcom was a format that gave its stars a lot to like. Of course, there was the pleasure of getting instant feedback from a studio audience, which could be crucial for surviving a long shooting day. But there was also the fact that it was a shooting day, singular. While cast and crew would rehearse and block an episode one or more days during the week, those days could be short, letting stars roll in at a reasonable hour and maybe even leave in time to pick up their kids from school. A single-camera sitcom is tougher: The same scene has to be shot many more times to get different coverage angles, and when you’re chasing the light outdoors, your call time might be punishingly early. All that might be true for Stick, too, but considering it’s a sports comedy, stars Owen Wilson...

Owen Wilson remembers his dad, and JFK, as he explores grief through comedy in Stick for Apple TV+
Image
Apple TV+ has a Ted Lasso-sized hole to fill — and Owen Wilson might just be the golfer to sink that putt with Stick. Since the series finale of Ted Lasso (which racked up 61 Emmy nominations and 11 wins) aired two years ago this week, Apple TV+ is hoping to strike lightning twice with another sports-themed series centered on a found family and their lovable, everyman patriarch who just needs a win.

In Stick, Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, a former pro golfer in the midst of a divorce and a midlife crisis, who becomes a father figure to a troubled young protégé, played by Peter Dager. Life has dealt Pryce losses most people couldn’t come back from, and in the way only Wilson can, we watch him fight to find his way forward — his signature effervescent optimism barely masking the heartbreak beneath.

‘Stick’ Review: Owen Wilson’s Wonky Apple Golf Dramedy Struggles to Be the Next ‘Ted Lasso’
Image
In his 2002 special, “Live on Broadway,” the hilarious late comedian and actor Robin Williams imagined the drunken conversations that led to the invention of golf. With his boundless, chaotic energy, he was able to, in just under two minutes, create more earned, clever humor about the sport than the clunky golf dramedy series “Stick” does across ten episodes. The show has plenty of drinking, but little of the freewheeling fun you’d hope for.

It’s a series that’s clearly aiming to fill the “Ted Lasso” void for Apple TV+, leaning into more forced “feel-good” schmaltz than it does prolonged silliness, though it comes up far short of doing so. Even as it benefits from the reliable, if rather familiar, charm of Owen Wilson and a winning ensemble cast, it can’t overcome an overly sentimental, woefully scattered story that barely holds together. There could be an enjoyable 90-minute comedy hidden away in here,...

Stick Review — A Swinging Success With Heart
Image
A washed-out former pro athlete looking to capture the magic of the past is at the center of the new Apple TV+ series, Stick. The series was created by Jason Keller, who was one of the writers of the Academy Award-winning movie Ford v Ferrari. Owen Wilson makes his comedy series debut as the lead of the series while also serving as an executive producer.

Wilson stars as Pryce Cahill, an ex-pro golfer whose career was halted over 20 years ago. After getting fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store, Pryce decides to bet big on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom named Santi. Starring alongside Wilson are Judy Greer, Mariana Tervino, Marc Maron, and Peter Dager. There are also cameos from several professional golfers, including Collin Morikawa, who is ranked fourth in the world.

‘Stick’ Review: Owen Wilson Sticks to Type in Colorful but Corny Sports Story
Image
When the streaming wars began, Apple TV+ initially aimed to differentiate itself by forgoing R-rated content in favor of a softer, sweeter, more comforting brand of TV. The network’s new golf comedy, Stick, seems born from that original template: a series whose overwhelming nice-ness serves as both its greatest strength and biggest handicap.

Created by Jason Keller, Stick follows an ex-golfer named Pryce “Stick” Cahill (Owen Wilson) whose promising career was derailed by an explosive mid-tournament meltdown many years ago. Divorced, directionless, and washed up, Stick spots a talented teenage golfer, Santi (Peter Dager), at a local driving range and immediately seizes his chance for redemption. Stick becomes Santi’s coach and the pair pile into an Rv along with Santi’s mother, Elena (Mariana Treviño), and Stick’s best friend, Mitts (Marc Maron), to see just how far the kid can go.

Wilson plays the show’s eponymous...
