Image

‘Sugar Town’ Was One of the Best Movies of 1999, One of the Best Years Ever — So Why Can’t We See It?
Image
In the age of streaming, there’s a widespread belief that every movie is available, all the time, everywhere. Don’t fall for it! Some of the greatest movies ever made are nowhere to be found due to everything from music rights snafus to corporate negligence. In this column, we take a look at films currently out-of-print on physical media and unavailable on any streaming platform in an effort to draw attention to them and say to their rights holders, “Release This!”

At the end of 1999, Entertainment Weekly ran a cover story titled “The Year That Changed Movies,” celebrating the abundance of highwire masterpieces that the American film industry seemed to be cranking out on a weekly basis that year. “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Magnolia,” “The Limey,” “Fight Club,” “Being John Malkovich,” “Election,” “Boys Don’t Cry”, “The Straight Story,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Bringing Out the Dead,” “The Matrix,” and “Three Kings” are just a random sampling,...

Charlie Brooker’s Deadpan Mockumentary 'Cunk on Life' Sets Netflix Premiere
Image
The best docuseries that teaches you absolutely nothing is set to return to the BBC this December, but Netflix subscribers will have to wait until January for their next dose of Cunk. Philomena Cunk has put journalists around the world to shame over the last few years, asking hard hitting questions others are too scared to ask, like "how many Three Wise Men were there?" and "when you teach a kid Shakespeare, do their heads grow physically bigger?" Created by Black Mirror mastermind Charlie Brooker, Philomena Cunk is played by British comedian Diane Morgan. Cunk has already teached (which is how she would say it) audiences about our planet and life in Britain. But her next documentary is exploring life itself.

Cunk on Life will release on the BBC this Christmas, followed by a Jan. 2, 2025 premiere on Netflix. The one-off special documentary will take Cunk on an existential journey, as...

Black Mirror Fans Need to Watch This Hilarious Netflix Miniseries
Image
Few shows are as horrifically captivating as Charlie Brookers Black Mirror. The Netflix-backed horror anthology examines everyones deepest fears with a modern spin. More importantly, it shows how everyday technology can compound the worlds problems. Its as much an art as a show, and each entry reveals more about human nature. However, Black Mirror isnt Brookers only deeply existential work. More recently, hes released a more comedic examination of societal woes. While Black Mirror was a Netflix endeavor, Cunk on Earth is a BBC-backed mockumentary. And, as a British show, Cunk on Earth leans into the nations famously deadpan comedy.

Now, that may seem like the furthest thing possible from Black Mirror. After all, the beloved Netflix series is a dark and brooding horror series. Each episodes twist seems to worsen the situation exponentially, creating far-reaching and existentially terrifying implications. There are certainly some cautiously optimistic entries in the Black Mirror catalog,...

Matthew Perrys Alleged Dealer Erik Fleming Once Directed Scarlett Johansson
Image
The overdose death of Matthew Perry was a shock to anyone who grew up in the 90s watching Friends. Five people were arrested surrounding Matthew Perrys premature death, including a local physician and the actors live-in assistant. Additionally, Erik Fleming, the director of the childrens fantasy film My Brother the Pig, was charged as a middleman in the case. Fleming, who was known to Perry as a TV acquaintance, now faces up to 25 years in his federal case.

It's somewhat of a bizarre coincidence (or another tragic Hollywood downfall) that Fleming was involved in the scheme that killed the '90s star, considering he was once an up-and-coming director in the same decade. Fleming produced the first season of The Surreal Life, which starred Mc Hammer, Corey Feldman, Vince Neil, and others. He directed the bizarre 1995 sci-fi film, which starred a variety of '80s icons, such as Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet,...

Ryan Reynolds at an event for Deadpool 2 (2018)
Deadpool & Wolverine sneak preview hints at a snarky satire on Marvel’s multiverse
Ryan Reynolds at an event for Deadpool 2 (2018)
Can Ryan Reynolds and the director Shawn Levy integrate our favourite antihero into the MCU? Or will they just send the whole thing up instead?

What exactly do we want from a Deadpool movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The integration of Ryan Reynolds’s potty-mouthed mutant into the rather more wholesome universe populated by the likes of Spider-Man, Thor and the Hulk? Or a freaky, bloodthirsty, meta-fuelled superhero buddy movie that gives Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine one last hurrah on the big stage? Thirty-seven minutes of footage screened for fans from Shawn Levy’s film suggested we may well need to settle on one or the other, at least for a while longer.

Much has been made of Deadpool & Wolverine’s potential to integrate X-Men – once the property of 20th Century Fox, now owned (like Marvel) by Disney in terms of big-screen rights – into the MCU. And yet what...

The Masked Singer UK viewers convinced Cat and Mouse are married celebrities
Image
The Masked Singer fans are adamant that they have discovered the real identity of the Cat and Mouse on the ITV series.

According to viewer theories, married couple and singers Martin and Shirlie Kemp are allegedly behind the masks of the Cat and Mouse.

The first episode of the season, which aired on ITV on Sunday (1 January), saw the animalistic pair go up against Ghost, Jellyfish, Phoenix, Knitting and Otter to impress the studio audience and the panel.

Ghost was eventually unmasked as footballer Chris Kamara, leaving viewers thrilled and the panel shocked.

Now, viewers have their suspicions that Pepsi & Shirlie singer, Shirlie, and Spandau Ballet vocalist, Martin, are hiding under the Cat and Mouse costumes.

Viewers believe that the clues given in episode one were enough to give their identities away.

What the ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ celebrities have said about the Eighties classic
Bob Geldof
The festive 1984 hit “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” can usually be found on every yuletide playlist in December, despite its almost blindingly depressing lyrics.

Nearly everyone knows the story behind the song. Band Aid, an amalgamation of the biggest stars of the 1980s, was formed by Sir Bob Geldof and Ultravox frontman Midge Ure, who gathered everyone together to record the song in London to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia.

To this day, the song has raised £200m, which is well above the initial £70,000 target set by Geldof. It was so successful, in fact, that Geldof has returned to the studio several times over the following 38 years. In total, there are four versions of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”.

With the combination of lyrics by Geldof and Ure and the voices of arguably the best singers of a generation, the 1984 song was a hit. The video...

The Horne Section TV Show review: Alex Horne’s magpie-ish meta comedy delight
Image
One of Taskmaster’s most recurring jokes is that Alex Horne is the show’s lackey. The affable, awkward assistant is described as “little Alex Horne” by host Greg Davies, even though the hit comedy series was actually his idea. But now he’s breaking out. Horne has his own comedy series called The Horne Section TV Show (Channel 4), about his fictional quest to create his own comedy series called “The Horne Section TV Show”, with his real-life band, who are called… The Horne Section. Still with me? Buckle up; we’re getting meta.

And meta it is: the show opens during a recording of Taskmaster, with Davies – clearly hamming up his tyrannical on-screen persona – berating his co-host to the audience while Alex (Horne playing himself with extra humility) fidgets in the wings. Alex is a man with great ideas, worn down by years of TV bureaucracy and living in Davies’ shadow.

‘Unfortunately, it’s done’: Zoe Kravitz reveals that Big Little Lies won’t return for season three
Image
Zoe Kravitz has told fans to give up hope for a third season of Big Little Lies, as she claims it won’t return following the death of director Jean-Marc Vallée.

Based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, the ensemble drama revolved around a group of parents at a preparatory school who become involved in a murder investigation.

Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern also featured in the show’s premiere season, with Meryl Streep joining the cast for season two.

As well as directing the 2013 Oscar-winning film Dallas Buyers Club, Vallée was known for spearheading the first season of Big Little Lies. However, Vallée passed away on Christmas Day last year due to “a fatal cardiac arrhythmia secondary to severe coronary atherosclerosis”. He was 58 years old.

Kravitz, who played yoga teacher and mother-of-one Bonnie Carlson in the drama, featured in a TikTok...

EastEnders helped me recover from brain tumour, says Martin Kemp
Image
Landing a role in EastEnders was the thing that helped Martin Kemp recover “more than anything else”, the Spandau Ballet bassist has said.

The 61-year-old starred as villain Steve Owen in the popular BBC One soap between 1998 and 2002.

Appearing on the Dish podcast with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, Kemp said when he was offered the role, he was urged by friends not to accept it.

“Everybody around me was saying, ‘Don’t do it, don’t do it. It’s going to ruin your career, don’t do it’,” he recalled. “Well because they hadn’t had any name actors in that show before, right?

“Everybody had grown up with EastEnders, so I was kind of the first one of those name actors to go in.”

Kemp says he was offered the role around five years after he’d gone through “ the whole brain tumour business” in the mid-Nineties,...

Alex Horne
Why Taskmaster Fans Need to Watch The Horne Section TV Show
Alex Horne
You can get a double dose of Alex Horne on your TV tonight, as his brand-new six-part sitcom The Horne Section TV Show premieres on All4 today.

Horne will be playing a fictionalised version of himself, who tires of being Greg Davies’ little assistant, and decides to pitch his own late-night music chat show on Channel 4, featuring his band The Horne Section, to be filmed at his chaotic home.

Irreverent and sometimes surreal, the humour is self-aware and silly, with the lovable blend of comedy and catchy music that The Horne Section is known for. It’s a little bit scrappy and homemade, but benefits from not taking itself too seriously, and grows in confidence over the first three episodes as it carves out its own identity.

Desiree Burch is excellent, high-energy fun as the frustrated producer, Greg Davies’ particular brand of petulant, egotistical hilarity is in full force,...

June Brown Dies: ‘EastEnders’ Star And UK TV Icon Was 95
Image
Tributes are flooding in for EastEnders star June Brown, who has died aged 95, with Stephen Fry praising her “wonderful human qualities”.

Brown played the iconic Dot Cotton in the long running BBC soap opera for more than 30 years, and was much loved in UK entertainment circles.

She passed away peacefully on Sunday evening with her family by her side at her home in Surrey, England.

Actor and broadcaster Fry tweeted: “June Brown, amongst all her other wonderful human qualities and achievements, will be remembered as a tireless and fearless LGBT ally – especially during the darkest days of HIV/AIDS and Section 28 [legislation that banned ‘promotion of homosexuality’]… it was a privilege to know her.”

British actor and musician Martin Kemp, who appeared with Brown in EastEnders in the late 1990s and early 2002s, wrote on Twitter: “I was such a small part of your 35 years at EastEnders but you were a massive part of my time there.

British Stars Call on Boris Johnson to Ban UK Fur Sales
Image
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has received a letter signed by 50 of Britain’s biggest stars, including Dame Judi Dench, Brian May Cbe, Leona Lewis, Gary Lineker OBE, James Arthur, Thandie Newton OBE, Alesha Dixon, Ricky Gervais, Mollie King and Dame Twiggy Lawson, urging him to implement a UK ban on the sale of real animal fur.

Animal protection organisation Humane Society International/UK which leads the #FurFreeBritain campaign in collaboration with other animal charities, is hopeful that a 2021 ban is possible now that the Brexit transition is completed.

Fur farming was banned in Britain almost two decades ago in 2003 as it was deemed too cruel. But since then Britain has imported more than £800 million worth of fur from countries including Finland, China, France and Poland, where animals experience severe suffering and distress on fur farms. This is a double standard that needs to end.

The letter which is also signed by Amanda Holden,...

Pink Flamingo Films released the official trailer for an indie dramedy titled The Loss Adjuster, from the UK directed by Vincent Woods. Luke Goss stars as a "Hapless Insurance Loss Adjuster" who feels his life is spiraling out of control but discovers that even when you reach rock bottom, that some clouds really do have a silver lining. When his wife leaves him, he befriends strangers around the city at Christmas time. "The idea was to create a story of hope, fortitude, craziness set against sadness, loss and frustration but create the ability to laugh at the same time. Pink Flamingo Films has debuted a new trailer for their festive offering ‘The Loss Adjuster’ starring Luke Goss and Dame Joan Collins.

The film follows Martin Dyer (Goss), a hapless insurance loss adjuster who, after many years, hits financial hardship, prompting his wife Angie (Marsh) to leave him the week before Christmas. His day drastically goes from bad to worse with a catalogue of extraordinary and humorous encounters with a flirtatious and rather amorous widow (Collins), a corrupt Doctor (Siner), a lascivious female escort (Greenidge) and a dead rat. It is only later at the funeral of a client that Martin has an epiphany; and with the help of his unlikely friendship with a teenage thief (Byrne), he discovers that sometimes you have to lose it all to find out what really matters.

Directed by Vincent Wood, the film stars Luke Goss, Dame Joan Collins, Martin Kemp, Guy Siner, Cathy Tyson,...

Jonathan Sothcott interview: producing independent films in the UK
Kirsten Howard Aug 8, 2017

Producer Jonathan Sothcott talks about running an independent film company in the UK, finding the right project and a post-Brexit industry.

Jonathan Sothcott has had a hand in producing a whole lot of independent films here in the UK over the last decade. You may have even seen a fair few of them yourself, especially if you’re a Danny Dyer completest.

Kenny Goss Talks the Highs and Lows of Life with Former Love George Michael
Peter Adamson, Jean Alexander, Johnny Briggs, Margot Bryant, and Doris Speed in Coronation Street (1960)
George Michael was a music icon to millions and a superstar across the globe, but to heartbroken ex-partner Kenny Goss, he was also just an ordinary guy who was happiest watching daytime TV and walking labradors Hippie, Mo Mo, Meg and Abby. Yet that doesn’t mean life with the two-time Grammy winner was easy – far from it. Talking exclusively to The Sun in aid of the charitable Goss-Michael Foundation, the 58 year-old Texan lifted the lid on the extraordinary times he shared with Michael during their 13-year relationship, touching on such heart-wrenching issues as Michael’s drug abuse, multiple arrests and tragic Christmas Day death.

The Lrm Interview with The Edge of Seventeen’s Kelly Fremon Craig
If you aren’t a teenage girl, you might not think that Kelly Fremon Craig’s debut, the coming of age movie The Edge of Seventeen, is for you, but in fact, the characters and situations are surprisingly relatable regardless of your age or gender.

Her movie stars Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) as Nadine, a teen outcast who only has one friend at high school, Haley Lu Richardson’s Krista. Nadine neither gets along with her widowed mother (Kyra Sedgwick) nor her perfect older brother Darien (Blake Jenner), so when Krista starts dating Darien, it only causes more anxiety for Nadine, so she turns to her history teacher (Woody Harrelson) for advice, although he wants nothing to do with it.

It seems like a simple enough plot, but Nadine’s dialogue and how it’s delivered by Steinfeld is spot-on, and her interaction with the cast around her (particularly Harrelson...

What MTV Classic Needs to Do to Survive
Michael Stipe at an event for Happy Tears (2009)
If MTV Classic is anything like MTV, it'll be on the air for a month before people start complaining they don't play enough music. The "new" channel launched on August 1st, the 35th anniversary of MTV's debut, opening up the vaults to a pop-culture treasure trove that's been gathering dust for years. They should have done this years ago. MTV Classic wants to establish its music cred early on — they were wise to spend most of the first day playing classic Unplugged episodes, with Nirvana, Erykah Badu and R.E.M. The...

11 Best Movies of 2016 So Far
Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool (2016)
What if Hollywood refused to release any more movies after June 30th, leaving audiences and Oscar voters to pick from what washed in with the tide from the first six months of 2016? Yikes. Last year at this time, we'd already had Mad Max: Fury Road, Inside Out, Love & Mercy and Ex Machina. This year's pickings are, well, slimmer. Amid the furor over the degrees of suckitude in Batman v Superman, the lack of laughs delivered by Kevin Hart in Ride Along 2 and Central Intelligence, and the franchise fatigue brought...

Sing Street Arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand on July 26
From celebrated director and writer John Carney (Begin Again, Once), Sing Street arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand on July 26 from Anchor Bay Entertainment.

Audiences everywhere will be dancing in the streets when Anchor Bay Entertainment and The Weinstein Company release the universally praised film, Sing STREETon Blu-ray™ and DVD July 26, 2016 from Anchor Bay Entertainment and available on Digital HD and On Demand from Starz Digital July 26, 2016.

From celebrated director and writer John Carney (Begin Again, Once), the film features a stellar cast with Lucy Boynton (Miss Potter), Maria Doyle Kennedy (“Orphan Black”), Aidan Gillen (“Game of Thrones”), Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) and newcomers Kelly Thornton and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo. The Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh film is “funny, charming, poignant,” according to Katie Walsh at the Los Angeles Times.

Sing Street marches to the beat of an eighties drummer with the music and influence of The Clash, A-Ha, The Cure, Duran, Genesis, Spandau Ballet, The Jam, Motorhead and more. Also included in the film is an original emotional ballad “Go Now” penned by Maroon 5’s frontman Adam Levine.

Sing Street takes us back to 1980s Dublin seen through the eyes of a 14-year-old boy named Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) who is looking for a break from a home strained by his parents’ relationship and money troubles, while trying to adjust to his new inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious, über-cool and beautiful Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and with the aim of winning her heart he invites her to star in his band’s music videos. There’s only one problem: he’s not part of a band…yet. She agrees, and now Conor must deliver what he’s promised – calling himself “Cosmo” and immersing himself in the vibrant rock music trends of the decade, he forms a band with a few lads, and the group pours their heart into writing lyrics and shooting videos.

Inspired by writer/director John Carney’s life and love for music, Sing Street shows us a world where music has the power to take us away from the turmoil of everyday life and transform us into something greater. Sing Street is “an irresistible, feel-good movie”, Leonard Maltin.

Sing Street is rated PG-13. Runtime is 106 minutes. The Blu-ray and DVD bonus content includes Making Sing Street, Writer/Director John Carney and Adam Levine Talk Sing Street and nine cast auditions.

[Sundance Review] Sing Street
Returning to Sundance after breaking out with his Oscar-winning, shoe-string romance musical Once, director John Carney is back on a victory tour of sorts with Sing Street. Imbuing the same love for music its emotional highs, this is a film more earnest in its pleasure-giving than his last feature, Begin Again. While the structure can be a touch too formulaic, it’s difficult to resist getting swept up in the music and its modest ambitions, for his new musical is acutely attuned to being a crowd-pleaser in all the right ways.

In a lower-class area of Dublin circa 1985, we follow Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), a teenager whose school has just been downgraded so his parents can free up some money. He’s now forced to attend the local Catholic school Synge Street, which is full of a rough bunch and teachers that could care less about the kids — where a student...

Legend; Infinitely Polar Bear; Tangerines; Cartel Land – review
Tom Hardy’s turn as the Krays is doubly impressive, while Andrew Garfield strikes a deal with the devil

It’s a familiar rule of thumb in the Oscar-watching game that the best actors aren’t always recognised for their best work. Tom Hardy’s as good an example as any this year: he cracked his first nod for his beardily villainous performance in The Revenant, though it’s some of his wobblier work. I’d rather have seen him honoured for Legend (Studiocanal, 18): his twin turn as Reggie and Ronnie Kray is no less brash a feat of scenery-chewing, but it’s a considerably more special one. Drawing on both his reckless movie-star magnetism and his character-actor peculiarities, often in the same frame, it’s a dazzling thespian stunt and a full-bodied (well, double-bodied) characterisation – and the lifeblood of Brian Helgeland’s less inventive chunk of East End gangland lore.

2015: The Year Music Documentaries Brought Back the Dead
Kurt Cobain and Nirvana at an event for MTV Live 'n' Loud (1993)
Nothing fits the music documentary format quite so compellingly as a life cut tragically short. In addition to the ready-made dramatic arc, a subject who leaves this mortal coil before their time usually also leaves a certain amount of mystery in their wake, providing ample grist for filmmakers (and the folks they interview) to chew on.

Even when the hows and whys of an artist's tragic exit are a matter of uncontroversial record, questions of "What might have been?" inevitably linger over their prematurely truncated discography — in itself a far...
