‘Night Train Murders’ 4K Uhd Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: Irene Miracle, Laura D’Angelo, Flavio Bucci, Gianfranco De Grassi, Macha Méril, Enrico Maria Salerno, Marina Berti, Franco Fabrizi | Written by Roberto Infascelli, Renato Izzo, Aldo Lado, Ettore Sanzò | Directed by Aldo Lado

88 Films continues to mine the murky depths of cult horror with their 4K Uhd release of Night Train Murders, a chilling piece of Italian exploitation cinema that finds new life in breathtaking visual quality. Presented as part of the “upgraded to 4K” The Italian Collection, this edition transforms Aldo Lado’s grim and provocative thriller into a beautifully restored experience, drawing out details and textures previously buried in older home video versions.

The film follows two young women, Margaret (Irene Miracle) and Lisa (Laura D’Angelo), who embark on a train journey from Germany to Verona during the Christmas holidays. What begins as a carefree trip soon descends into a nightmare when they cross paths with two dangerous young men,...

‘Anthropophagus’ 4K Uhd Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: Tisa Farrow, Saverio Vallone, George Eastman, Serena Grandi, Margaret Mazzantini, Mark Bodin, Bob Larson, Rubina Rey | Written by Joe D’Amato, George Eastman | Directed by Joe D’Amato

Anthropophagus, also known as The Grim Reaper, is a notorious Italian horror film directed by Joe D’Amato. The plot centres on a group of tourists who become stranded on a deserted island, only to discover that they are being hunted by a deranged, cannibalistic killer, played with ferocious intensity by George Eastman.

Anthropophagus is a film that has cemented its place in horror history not only for its content but also for the controversy it sparked. As a piece of cinema, it embodies the visceral, unflinching approach to horror that Italian filmmakers of the time were known for. The film’s atmosphere is one of relentless dread, enhanced by its hauntingly desolate island setting and a sparse, eerie score that lingers...

Review: Lucio Fulci's "The New York Ripper" (1982); Blue Underground Blu-ray Special Edition
By Todd Garbarini

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none

Lieutenant Fred Williams (Jack Hedley) is easily the horror cinema’s most pedestrian, laid back, and disinterested police detective in recent memory. In Lucio Fulci’s infamous slasher outing The New York Ripper (1982), a spate of brutal crimes involving young women being sliced up by a knife-wielding maniac who quacks like a duck lands right smack into Williams’s lap and he couldn’t be more bored by it. Mr. Hedley’s characterization of this by-the-book investigator was no doubt in the script, but his character just meanders through his scenes with such an aloof attitude that it’s amazing no one calls him out on it. The few times Williams does appear to spring to life are when the sex lives of his victims are revealed, which he reacts to with a judgmental shrug and smirk when he’s...

Lucio Fulci’s The New York Ripper (1982) will be available on Blu-ray June 25th From Blue Underground

Someone Is Taking A Big Bite Out Of The Big Apple!

A blade-wielding psychopath is on the loose, turning The Big Apple bright red with the blood of beautiful young women. As NYPD detective Fred Williams (Jack Hedley of For Your Eyes Only) follows the trail of butchery from the decks of the Staten Island Ferry to the sex shows of Times Square, each brutal murder becomes a sadistic taunt. In the city that never sleeps, the hunt is on for the killer that can’t be stopped!

Co-written and directed by acclaimed horror maestro Lucio Fulci and filmed on location in the mean streets of New York City, this is one of Fulci’s most savage and controversial thrillers. Now Blue Underground is proud to present The New York Ripper in a...

DVD Playhouse--October 2009
DVD Playhouse—October 2009

Allen Gardner

The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories...

Fulci's New York Ripper Goes Blu
There's always been a debate -- Fulci or Argento? Speaking for myself, I see it like Burger King or McDonald's, Fulci being Mickey-d's because you know you're getting trash, while Argento, The King, tries to dress things up by making you think you're getting something that looks better than it actually is.

See where I'm going? Just thinking out loud.

In any event, with Blue Underground pumping out the classics on Blu-ray (please give us Zombie) lately, things have been looking really, really good.

Blu-ray.com just got word that the Fulci slasher The New York Ripper, which features everyone's favorite quacking(!) killer, will be hitting high definition on September 29th.

Extras for this release will include:

“I'm an Actress!” – Interview with Zora Kerova NYC Locations Then and Now Theatrical Trailer
